Ranking the Top 10 Euro 2020 Away Kits

With the rescheduling of this year’s Euro 2020 tournament meaning, we will now have to wait until next year for the coveted European Championship, this still hasn’t stopped kit manufacturers from releasing the uniforms that each country will wear at next years tournament.

Adidas and Puma both released their array of kits for the countries they supply for back during the usual time they would have if the Euro’s was still taking place this year, which was November 2019. Nike, however, chose to hold off on its release due to the COVID-19 pandemic and released their kits for the tournament this week. We are also still awaiting Hummel’s kits for Denmark and Joma’s kits for Ukraine.

There has been a great show from the manufacturers this year, with the ditching of many templates for most, giving us fresh and unique kit designs for each country, with some fantastic away kits to choose from. So, here is our top 10 Euro 2020 away kits…

10. Netherlands

I didn’t realise I was reviewing Fred Perry polos? I’m a fan of a button collar, usually, but this just doesn’t work in my opinion. The colour scheme is fine, there nothing wrong with that, and works for a Netherland’s away kit, but it’s just really plain and boring and there is virtually nothing to say about it.

Swap the Nike and Netherland’s badge for a laurel wreath and I’d probably wear it down the pub, but aside from that, I wouldn’t go for a kick about in it. Much to my disbelief, there are other kits released for the Euro’s that are actually worse, but this was the best of a bad bunch and is last in the top 10.

9. Germany

Again, it is very plain and very simple, but this time in a slightly more effective way. Adidas may have stuck with a template for this, but I like the use of the same cuffed sleeves for the away as they did with the home, and have opted for a stealthy all black for the rest of the kit, including the federation badge and Adidas logo.

The fact that the whole base colour is black helps to make the sleeves stand out evermore – making for an effective contrast, and I actually prefer the countries away kit compared to their home. Die Mannschaft have been given a simple but complimentary design here.

8. Sweden

The first and only pinstripe design on the list – Sweden and Adidas have produced a classy approach for their away kit for the Euro’s, and I am very much a fan. A dark navy blue base colour features the yellow pinstripe vertically down the kit, along with the yellow trim on the sleeves and collar – it is a simple design but it works well, and I am a sucker for a pinstripe, especially when it is done well.

Adidas have strayed away from the usual template for this one, and thank you to them for doing so – I don’t feel the pinstripe design would have worked on the template design, so I’m glad they opted away from that.

7. Austria

In keeping with Puma’s Crafted from Culture series, a theme they have introduced for all of their kits for Euro 2020 – Austria’s away kit is something very interesting, and something that I like. The colour scheme and design across the kit is inspired by the Art Nouveau that dominated Austria at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, as stated by Puma.

The colours of the black and teal work incredibly well together, and along with the new federation badge which fits the aesthetic and overall provides the country with a great away kit.

6. Belgium

This one is extremely lovely – and is on trend with Adidas’ kits they have provided for the Belgian Red Devils for the Euro 2020 tournament. Featuring an off-white/beige base colour, the red and black cuff sleeves, and the new federation badge – an interesting feature is also the brushstroke design across the kit, much like the home kit.

Again, despite the use of the template, the design and colour scheme carries it off well – and unlike the home kit, the print carries on around the back, another team that doesn’t need to change the design because of a certain UEFA regulation.

5. Italy

Yes – a big old Renaissance yes. Italy and Puma again following the renaissance era kit designs for the country, with the white base colour featuring a slightly greyed out design across the kit make for a great show from the German manufacturer.

The away kit features a different design compared to the home, giving it a different angle rather than using the same template and just changing the colour which is something Puma should be applauded for.

Overall the Azzuri have been dealt a cracking away kit for next year’s tournament, and I love the renaissance inspired patterns that have featured.

4. France

Oh boy, simplicity really is key sometimes, isn’t it? Nike and France have teamed up well and produced a fantastic away kit along with their barnstormer of a home jersey.

The simple white may elude most, but the bright electric blue that has been used for the Nike logo and federation badge just hits you in the face in the best way possible. Another great touch is the Blue, White, and Red stripe down both sides of the kit which really stands out if caught from the right angle – but that is all you can say about the kit. For some, this may be a bad thing not having much to delve into or talk about, but that is what makes it beautiful.

It is VERY close to the country’s 2015 kit, but almost an upgrade with some detail changes, but I like it, a lot.

3. Switzerland

For some strange reason, I have seen a lot of negative reactions towards Switzerland’s away kit for next year’s Euro’s, but I guarantee that if you stick a Nike swoosh on this kit, opinions will instantly sway.

In keeping with Puma’s Crafted from Culture approach, the multicolour mountain range that features on the front pays homage to the countries four official languages, as well as the infamous Swiss mountain ranges that dominate the country’s landscape. I think it works fantastically well and really complements the base white colour, as well as the simple Swiss flag – all in all it has made for a beautiful away kit for the Swiss.

2. Portugal

Another opinion splitter, but for me, a kit that will go down in history for all the right reasons. The bright teal base colour is met with the three panels built of the country’s flag colours in horizontal stripes, which I think looks great.

One interesting feature is that, due to the aforementioned UEFA regulation where the back of the kit must be kept clear enough to see the player name and number prints, only the bottom panel carries on around the back of the kit, but it actually makes for a very interesting and different design – almost in an asymmetrical type of way. I love it, and it goes almost top for me…

1. Norway

Despite the country not having actually qualified yet, facing two playoff games against Serbia – I just could not ignore this beauty. Norway has been gifted with quite possibly one of the best away kits in international football history, let alone just for next years Euro’s.

The kit design and colours are inspired by that or Norwegian nature, reminiscent of icebergs, in celebration of the countries cold and icy terrain. The collar and sleeve trims feature a darker shade of blue for contrast, but it is the Nike zig-zag down the side of the kit that helps for the design to stand out even more, due to the black standing out so much against the design and colour scheme.

It is very similar to Liverpool’s away kit for next season, and as you can probably guess that was my favourite Premier League away kit too.

‘Willian better for Tottenham over Arsenal’ – Darren Bent

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has given his views on Willian’s future as the Brazilian’s contract is ending with Chelsea at the end of the season.

Bent told talkSPORT that “Spurs would be in for him with the whole Mourinho factor, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Arsenal were interested, they want all of Chelsea’s leftovers – this is one I’d actually take, though!”

The former England international went on to talk about Arsenal’s front line, with the likes of Aubameyang, Lacazette and Pepe, in addition to promising youngsters; Nketiah, Saka and Martinelli. He feels like Willian may stunt the growth of youth players and may have an impact on their game time which is currently given by Mikel Arteta.

“Their right-hand side has been a problem, they’ve tried Steven Bergwijn and they’ve tried Lucas Moura out there and it hasn’t quite worked” – Bent said on Spurs’ current forward options.

It would make sense for the 31-year-old to reunite with former manager Jose Mourinho if they can secure him on a decent contract, though the question must be asked as to whether or not Chelsea would sell the winger to one of their main Premier League rivals aiming for the top.

It has been reported that Chelsea are prepared to give Willian a two-year contract extension, though the Brazilian is looking to commit for his long-term future through to 2024. Bent agrees that Chelsea should give him a three-year contract, and sees no issue.

Verdict

If Spurs can sign the proven Premier League winger, he would certainly add a different dynamic to their front three which they have been lacking for years. Willian would complement the left-side of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane through the centre for sure, and this would free up space in the middle for the likes of Moura and Bergwijn.

As Bent said, it would not make sense for the Gunners to sign the Brazilian as they already have the quality up top and he would hinder the youngster’s chances of playing.

Manchester United: Fans react as Paul Pogba is willing to commit future to the club

Last season Manchester United had a good campaign in the Premier League as they finished third, and this means they will be back in the Champions League.

They also reached three semi-finals and will be looking to improve on this in the 2020/21 season. To do this they need their best players, and it looks like one of their key men is ready to commit his future to the club following the latest news.

According to Jason Burt, who is a writer for The Telegraph, and reposted on Twitter by utdreport, midfielder and World Cup winner Paul Pogba is prepared to sign a new contract at United and initial talks have already taken place with his agent Mino Raiola.

This will be very good news for supporters of the club to hear, as the Frenchman can have a big attacking influence during matches.

He was injured for a large part of the 2019/20 season, so only managed to play 16 games, but in these games, he averaged 1.4 shots, 1.9 key passes, and 1.7 successful dribbles per game, per WhoScored. Comparing these to the squad, he completed the second-most dribbles and key passes per game, whilst he was sixth when it came to shots.

For someone who has played in central midfield in a lot of his appearances this season, these stats show how good he is at frustrating the opposition from the middle of the pitch and he is someone who can turn defence into attack very quickly.

Newcastle United: Jetro Willems posts cryptic tweet as future is uncertain

Newcastle United ace Jetro Willems has posted a rather cryptic tweet on his official Twitter page as his immediate future at the Tyneside club seems uncertain.

As per his tweet, the 26-year old says that he is ‘going to see what the future holds’, as he has only been on loan in the North East from Eintracht Frankfurt and technically this has now expired, but it seems unclear as of yet as to whether his immediate future still lies at St. James’ park or back in Germany with his parent club.

Indeed, with the outbreak of the global pandemic delaying the restart of the 2019/20 season, contracts and loan deals for some players have been set to expire with the campaign still going on, and Willems falls in this category.

The left-back has perhaps been unlucky that he picked up a serious cruciate ligament rupture in the middle of January earlier on in the year, that has seen him miss seven games, according to Transfermarkt.

There has not been an official time stamp on when exactly he could return, meaning that the Magpies have almost been put in limbo with regards to possibly extending his loan deal even though he is still injured.

The Dutch international was arguably playing well before this happened as Steve Bruce played him in 20 matches in all competitions, whereby he scored two goals and made three assists (via Transfermarkt).

Only time will tell as to when Willems will fully recover from his injury set back, but the next time he steps forward onto the pitch may not be in the famous black-and-white-striped jersey.

Geordies, do you think Willems will play again for the Toon? Comment below!

Arsenal fans react as Hector Bellerin is ruled out for the rest of the season

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal have confirmed that Hector Bellerin sustained a serious knee injury during the Chelsea clash on Saturday and will therefore be sidelined for between six and nine months.

The Spaniard, making his first start since mid-December, went down in pain under no contact and it was clearly more than just a knock. He was stretchered off and will undergo surgery for the injury in the coming days, however his rehabilitation is expected to consume the remainder of the season.

Bellerin’s misery may be matched by that of Unai Emery, who has consequently been left short of quality options at right-back – Stephan Lichtsteiner is past it, Carl Jenkinson isn’t good enough and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, while full of potential, isn’t a natural defender.

Look away Arsenal fans! American Soccer Fan is back to troll more fans at the London Stadium in the video above…

The 23-year-old’s huge setback took the glint off an otherwise perfect 90 minutes from the Gunners, who were excellent from back to front as they emerged 2-0 victors over their London rivals, with Laurent Koscielny and Alexandre Lacazette getting on the scoresheet.

Despite being a bit of a scapegoat for Arsenal in previous years, Bellerin has come a long way under Emery – he has chalked up five assists this season, according to Transfermarkt – however his bad luck means he won’t be able to contribute any further to the Spaniard’s first season.

Here’s how the Emirates Stadium faithful reacted to the news on Twitter…

Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't look ready for the new season… yet: Six things we learned as Al-Nassr hold Kylian Mbappe-less PSG in pre-season clash

The Portuguese will likely need to raise his game in 2023-24 given the influx of stars into the Saudi Pro League, but he disappointed against PSG

Cristiano Ronaldo was held scoreless and turned in a drab performance as his Al-Nassr side fought to an uneventful scoreless draw with PSG in their pre-season meeting in Osaka. Chances were rare in this high-profile friendly, with a Kylian Mbappe-less PSG lacking a goalscoring punch, instead turning to a litany of imperfect options and teenagers for attacking production.

Al-Nassr, meanwhile, looked to feed their main man, and he marked a relatively uneventful first half — if only because of his failure to put a chance away. Ronaldo met a floated cross from five yards out, but saw his weak effort thwarted by Gianluigi Donnarumma. He missed a far more speculative chance shortly after, putting a bicycle kick well past the post.

His miscues were the closest either team came for most of the contest. PSG, fielding a mixture of academy players and new signings, were lacking in possession, and never really strung a coherent attacking move together. Marco Asensio had the occasional half-chance, but his like of killer instinct cost Luis Enrique's side.

Ronaldo was removed from play after 65 minutes, slumping off the pitch and acknowledging the smattering of Al-Nassr shirts that stuck out in a sea of PSG fans. This wasn't his finest performance — far from it. Those showings are becoming less frequent these days, especially against tougher competition. And, if nothing else, this served as evidence that Ronaldo will need to raise his game once the competitive action begins.

GOAL looks at what we learned during the clash at Nagai Stadium:

Getty ImagesCristiano isn't ready yet

Ronaldo, in fairness, joined Al-Nassr when the Saudi Pro League season was well underway last season, and although a player of his quality is expected to quite comfortably dominate a lower-calibre division, there was always going to be something of an adjustment period.

Not anymore, though. This time, Ronaldo has no excuses. And in Al-Nassr's latest warm-up, the Portuguese didn't have much of an impact. A lot of the typical Ronaldo things were here. He floated around the box, waiting for the right cross or fortunate nick off a PSG defender. He broke out a few stepovers, chops, and turns — few of which were particularly necessary.

But his impact in front of goal — the thing he is supposed to be on the pitch for — was minimal. PSG certainly did their part defensively, but Ronaldo turned in a poor showing. Even he will need time to find form.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesZaire-Emery impresses again

Another game, another start for PSG's immensely promising teenager Warren Zaire-Emery. The academy product caught the eye in PSG's pre-season opener against Le Havre, and he was equally impressive here. Deployed alongside Vitinha, he looked far more comfortable than the 23-year-old, who started 29 games for the Parisians last season.

Al-Nassr have a sneakily good midfield pivot, lining up Marcelo Brozovic and Seko Fofana — an interesting blend of physicality and technique. Zaire-Emery danced around both of them, dictating play and offering an attacking thrust that the Parisians were otherwise missing.

PSG have five midfielders fighting for three spots in Luis Enrique's XI — with potentially more to come. But Zaire-Emery might just get his chance, and if this was to be his trial, it's hard to see what else he could've done to impress the new manager.

Getty ImagesAsensio is not a striker

Luis Enrique insisted on playing Asensio through the middle during his tenure as Spain manager, despite it yielding minimal results. And he did the same here, asking the winger to function as a sort of false nine for most of the contest.

The results, once again, were mixed. Asensio was full of energy and movement, and linked up well with PSG's wide players. But his instincts in the final third were lacking; this is not a player who likes to ghost into spaces, or win headers. It is, of course, in these times like these when PSG miss Mbappe, or crave a more direct presence off either wing.

Still, Luis Enrique looks likely to push on with this experiment, one that hasn't been working for some time now. It is, likely, not the role that the Spaniard signed up for when he left Real Madrid on a free transfer a few months ago.

Getty ImagesNo Neymar to be found

Neymar underwent significant ankle surgery less than six months ago, and was always going to need time to work his way back to fitness. And even though he seems to be nearing a return, it appears he isn't quite ready yet.

But he should be back soon. Neymar was pictured in team training this week, and seen smiling from the bench. Still, he never got on the pitch, leaving a bit of uncertainty as to how, exactly, this PSG team will eventually line up. There seems to be a chance that Neymar could operate in a more attacking role, or provide a goal threat in Luis Enrique's side — especially with Mbappe likely gone.

But it seems that Luis Enrique will have to wait a bit longer before he is able to release his Brazilian weapon. He will undoubtedly be an important addition for this languishing PSG side.

Argentina player ratings vs Indonesia: Lionel Messi-less Argentina wasteful in laboured friendly win

Goals from Leandro Paredes and Cristian Romero sealed victory for La Albiceleste in their final game of the 2022-23 season

An Argentina team missing Lionel Messi laboured to a 2-0 friendly victory over Indonesia on Monday. The world champions stroked the ball around without much resistance from the off, but were blunt in front of goal. However, La Albiceleste would enter the interval 1-0 up thanks to a long-range stunner from Leandro Paredes.

Indonesia, currently 149th in the FIFA world rankings, did not go down without a fight, though. On the stroke of half-time, Emiliano Martinez was called into a reaction stop to prevent Ivar Jenner grabbing an equaliser from close range, while Elkan Baggott's looping header drew an even better save from the goalkeeper.

Argentina reasserted control in the 55th minute, when Cristian Romero rose high to nod home Giovani Lo Celso's whipped corner. They saw the game out fairly comfortably from there, with Pratama Arhan's long throws only sporadically giving them something to think about.

GOAL rates Argentina's players from the showpiece friendly at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Emiliano Martinez (7/10):

Not entirely absent from the action. The Aston Villa man was forced into one decent save on the stroke of half-time and had to stretch to keep Baggott's header out. A fine display.

Nahuel Molina (6/10):

Got up to support attacks constantly. Was beaten once, but he was otherwise solid.

Cristian Romero (7/10):

Even in this lowest-of-stakes friendly, his love for the physical side of the game shone through. He didn't give Indonesia's forwards an inch and scored a powerful header.

German Pezzella (6/10):

Wasn't as involved as his defensive partner, but nothing too worrying.

Facundo Medina (6/10):

Potentially the most comfortable afternoon he'll ever have in his career. Spent the majority of the game camped out in the Indonesia half before being subbed with a clean sheet secured.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Exequiel Palacios (6/10):

Laid off Paredes for his stunning opener. A few good moments, but the least involved of his side's starting midfielders.

Leandro Paredes (8/10):

Began strongly and capped off a fine first half with an unstoppable strike into the top corner that would have beaten any goalkeeper. His side's pass-master throughout.

Giovani Lo Celso (7/10):

Busy in the opening exchanges and provided the corner that Romero crashed home with his head.

Nicolas Gonzalez (4/10):

A little disappointing. Wasn't involved enough and was replaced by Garnacho.

Julian Alvarez (5/10):

Fluffed two straightforward chances in the first half. Faded after the break.

Facundo Buonanotte (5/10):

Handed his international debut. Showed quick feet to round the keeper before the break, but couldn't score.

Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):

Tried to forced his way into the game, but very little came off for him. On the end of one crunching tackle that would have had Manchester United fans holding their collective breath.

Marcos Acuna (6/10):

On the ball a lot after coming on.

Lucas Ocampos (5/10):

Not a great deal to report.

Guido Rodriguez, Thiago Almada & Giovanni Simeone (N/A):
Padded their cap collections with a five-minute cameos.

Lionel Scaloni (6/10):

Shuffled his pack a little and the performances of Paredes and Lo Celso will have given him something to think about going forward. The capacity crowd in attendance certainly sounded like they enjoyed the World Cup holders coming to town, too.
