Lees, Wells and Barker get Lions calls

Eoin Morgan will captain England Lions in a two-day match against the Australians at Wantage Road

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Aug-2013Eoin Morgan will captain England Lions in a two-day match against the Australians at Wantage Road starting on August 16, with the side including three players – Keith Barker, Luke Wells and Alex Lees – who will be making their Lions debut.Morgan has had disjointed season so far, firstly due to his participation in the IPL and then because of a finger injury he sustained during the Champions Trophy. He has played just one County Championship match in 2013 and has drifted down the pecking order of candidates for the Test team.Lees, 20, is the latest on the production line of batsmen from Yorkshire to progress through the England set-up. Earlier this season Lees hit an unbeaten 275 against Derbyshire and is averaging 59.12 from six Championship matches.Wells, who plays for Sussex, is another opener enjoying a solid season, with 732 runs at 40.66 including two hundreds, while showing the ability to bat for long periods of time.Barker, meanwhile, is enjoying a notable all-round campaign with the defending champions Warwickshire, where he is part of their formidable pace attack. Although he has had a truncated summer due to injury he has taken 25 wickets at 18.64 in the Championship alongside scoring 292 runs at 48.66.Moeen Ali, the Worcestershire batsman who is one of just three players to cross 1000 first-class runs this season (the others being Chris Rogers and Joe Root), is rewarded for his form. The team also includes regular Lions representatives Gary Ballance, Jos Buttler, James Harris, Simon Kerrigan and Ben Stokes.Northamptonshire were the original opponents for the match but they have qualified for Friends Life t20 Finals Day. Now some of England’s fringe players will have the chance to face the Australians before another set of Lions cricketers play Bangladesh A in a one-day series next week. The presence of these Lions fixtures during a vital period of the county season has created some unease around the circuit.Geoff Miller, the national selector, said: “With the Friends Life t20 Finals Day running over the weekend of this fixture, we have been unable to select from any of the sides involved in that competition for obvious reasons, plus there are a number of other domestic fixtures that run very close to this Lions game, so for practical reasons we had to recognise that a number of counties’ players were unavailable.”As is always the case with these fixtures, they are an excellent marker for judging the level of these players at a very high international standard and we look forward to seeing the team perform strongly against the Australian opposition.”England Lions XI: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Gary Ballance, Keith Barker, Jos Buttler, James Harris, Simon Kerrigan, Alex Lees, Liam Plunkett, Ben Stokes, Luke Wells

Inter Miami in race to be MLS roster compliant

Herons transfer Gregore to Botafogo

Brazilian had hefty salaryWHAT HAPPENED?

After a report from The Athletic surfaced earlier this week, sharing that the Herons are currently in a race to meet MLS roster compliancy after over-spending this offseason, they made their first outgoing splash of 2024. The Brazilian returns home and Inter Miami are gearing towards being on-track for Tuesday's deadline.

MLS roster regulations for the 2023 campaign can be found here, but simply put, the Herons needed to offload a major salary on their team to meet compliancy with the league rules. Gregore made a hefty sum via his contract with Miami in 2023, earning $961, 250 across the campaign. With his outgoing transfer, it's assumed Miami are on-track to meet MLS roster regulations. However, the league has not yet announced the numerical statistics to which each team must abide by in 2024.

As a result, Gregore's outgoing transfer may not be enough. The likes of Jean Mota, Robert Taylor, Coco Jean and Deandre Yedlin are all rumored to be available on the transfer market. However, the club expected to part ways with Coco Jean regardless of their status – with a potential contract termination even on the table.

Gregore made 67 appearances for Miami after signing for the club in 2021.

They currently lead the table by nine points and another victory over the weekend would be a giant stride towards lifting the championship. They boast of a perfect record at home, winning all 15 matches at Parkhead, and are the favourites in the derby this time around.

Meanwhile, Rangers continue to chase their arch-rivals and despite winning their last 10 league matches, they are still lagging behind in the title race. Although a win would reduce the deficit, they will not have their fortunes in their hands. It will be a tough afternoon at Parkhead as there will be no away fans in the stands following a mutual agreement between the two clubs.

Hayden, who has endured his fair share of misfortune on the fitness front in recent times, lasted less than 15 minutes of a second-round tie with Yeovil at SToK Racecourse. The sight of him slumping to the turf left Phil Parkinson with an early tactical tweak on his hands.

Hayden went down after seeing Ollie Palmer net the opening goal of the game. While delighted to hit the front, the Red Dragons were left frustrated at seeing an important part of their defensive plans forced from the field.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hayden was replaced by James Jones, as Parkinson tinkered with the approach that had been drawn up prior to kick-off. With Jones more at home in the middle of the park, George Evans was asked to put his versatility to good use by slipping into the back four.

Wrexham will be hoping that Hayden’s injury is not too serious, allowing him to return to action in the not too distant future, but they will have the January transfer window to work with – as co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney make more funds available – if reinforcements are required at the turn of the year.

Glamorgan announce finances boost

Glamorgan have secured £1.3m in new funds from a group of private investors, as well as agreed the restructuring of several loans, to give a healthier look to their finances ahead of the 2012 season

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Feb-2012Glamorgan have secured £1.3m in new funds from a group of private investors, as well as agreed the restructuring of several loans, to give a healthier look to their finances ahead of the 2012 season. The county also announced that former ECB chairman and ICC president David Morgan has been nominated as Glamorgan’s president-elect.Allied Irish Bank, Cardiff Council and former chairman Paul Russell are the creditors who agreed to the restructuring, which includes an extension of the deadline for repayments. Last year, Glamorgan lost the right to host an England Test against West Indies, due to a delay in making payments to the ECB for the rain-drenched first Test against Sri Lanka in May.”We are delighted to be able to make this landmark announcement, which secures our future and demonstrates the confidence our investors have in the club’s business and prospects, following our success in securing 17 days of international cricket over the next five years including the 2015 Ashes,” chairman Barry O’Brien said. “We can now look forward to the 2012 season in a positive manner, which will also see the club stage an England v South Africa one-day international and the Friends Life t20 finals day in August.”Chief executive Alan Hamer said: “As with many other counties Glamorgan cricket has faced financial challenges for a number of years so this news is particularly welcome.”Morgan, who served as Glamorgan’s chairman between 1993 and 1997, will be proposed as the county’s president on a four-year term at their annual general meeting. “David is acknowledged worldwide as one of cricket’s great administrators and his welcome return to Glamorgan will be of enormous value to the club,” O’Brien said.

Real to wear last season's away kitPlaying Valencia on the roadCan extend lead at top of La LigaWHAT HAPPENED?

Real face Valencia on Saturday night and will hope to extend their lead at the top of La Liga to nine points with a victory. However, they have been forced to raid the wardrobe and find last season's away kit to wear during the game, due to a bizarre coincidence.

AdvertisementTHE EXPLANATION

Real are wearing their purple away kit because both their away and third kits this season match the black Valencia shorts and socks. As a result, because their home kit is white, as is Valencia's, they have been forced into the remarkable step of wearing last season's strip instead.

Real won the reverse fixture in thumping fashion, as they ran out 5-1 winners at the Bernabeu, thanks to a pair of braces from Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, and a strike from Dani Carvajal. They will be out to repeat the trick this weekend.

West Indies hang on for a tense draw

India made a bold declaration to bring the rain-hit Test to life, and Daren Bravo sucked the life right out of it with an innings of application and resolve

The Bulletin by Sidharth Monga02-Jul-2011
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outDarren Bravo and Carlton Baugh denied India•Associated PressThough close to 128 overs of play were lost to the elements, Barbados still managed to produce a dramatic draw. On the final day, India made a bold declaration to bring the Test to life, and Darren Bravo sucked the life right out of it with an innings of application and resolve. India set West Indies 281 to get in 83 overs, Ishant Sharma helped them take early wickets, but Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Carlton Baugh thwarted India for 322 deliveries between them. There were two twists in the final session. An ordinary lbw call against Chanderpaul, which was followed by Marlon Samuels’ wicket, would surely have sparked controversy had West Indies lost the match. With a maximum of 36 overs remaining, Bravo and Baugh put up further resistance. Baugh attacked too. At one point the target came down to 102 off 19.3 overs, and he kept India honest with the odd blow after that. Rain intervened, India came back with two quick wickets to turn the equation to three wickets required in 10.4 overs, but quite fittingly bad light brought the match to a premature end. There was a rain break just before the start of the mandatory overs, prior to which Baugh had hit Abhimanyu Mithun for three back-to-back boundaries. The break was instructive as to where the teams stood with regards to the result. While the Indian players hung about, hoping that it would be a passing shower, Bravo and Baugh wasted little time in getting back to the dressing room.It was a huge credit to the quality of the pitch that the match came close to a result. Some of the credit has to go to MS Dhoni too, for declaring 67 minutes into the fifth day. It was a huge departure from the usual for Dhoni. His previous third-innings declarations have left sides chasing 516, 403 and 617 respectively.Credit also has to go to Ishant, who became only the seventh Indian pace bowler to claim a Test 10-wicket haul. He backed up Dhoni’s declaration with aggressive bowling at the start, in the middle, and also in the end. The quality of the pitch and the strength of the opposition’s batting would have played a big role in the declaration, but West Indies showed character in saving the game. Especially pleasing would be that following Marlon Samuels’ impressive 78 not out in the first innings, another flamboyant batsman, Bravo, played with restraint for the larger cause.Bravo came in to bat in the seventh over, after both Lendl Simmons and Ramnaresh Sarwan had fallen to outside edges. Adrian Barath hung around for 64 deliveries, but he was worked over by Ishant. An inswinger was followed by one that left him, after which Ishant produced one that got big on Barath and took the shoulder of the bat.Smart stats

Ishant Sharma’s haul of 10 for 108 is the fourth-best figures for an Indian bowler in an away Test. There have been 11 ten-wicket hauls by Indians in away Tests and Ishant’s is the first in the West Indies.

VVS Laxman became the fourth Indian batsman to score two half-centuries in a Test on three occasions in the West Indies. The other batsmen to do so three times are Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath and Polly Umrigar.

The 69-run stand between Darren Bravo and Carlton Baugh is the seventh fifty-plus stand for the sixth wicket for West Indies against India in Tests in Barbados.

Bravo, who has had a very good start to his Test career, has scored five half-centuries in 12 innings at an average of 41.27.

This is the second draw in India-West Indies Tests in Barbados. West Indies have won seven and lost none.

At that point 65 overs still remained. Ishant and Praveen Kumar worked hard for the next seven overs, but Chanderpaul and Bravo looked solid for the most part. If the situation was right up Chanderpaul’s alley, it was a less familiar experience for Bravo. That showed in how he felt the need to score every now and then. To play the release shot every once in a while. Defending for long durations can get pretty tense, with close-in fielders ready to pounce on any edge. Bravo released that tension at the first sighting of Mithun, driving and glancing him for two boundaries in his first over.Chanderpaul at the other end batted like he was born to do just this: save Test matches for West Indies, batting aggressors into submission. He kept leaving balls even marginally outside off. When he did play he did so with soft hands. He spent 16 balls on 5, and 23 on 9, but India couldn’t draw a false stroke out of him. Bravo, who stayed impressive when defending, played the odd shot in between, including a slog sweep off Harbhajan Singh through midwicket.Soon after tea, though, Chanderpaul was given lbw off an offbreak hitting him outside off, and heading further away. Ishant followed that up with Samuels’ wicket off an inswinger. While Bravo remained solid as ever, India sensed an opportunity with Baugh, who despite a superb series behind the wicket is considered under pressure for want of runs.Harbhajan, who had dismissed Baugh three times previously in the series, attacked him with men all around the bat. Baugh edged the second ball he faced from Harbhajan, but Dhoni dropped it. Baugh had by then realised he might not have the defensive technique suitable for the task, and began to attack in order to get the fielders out of his face. It worked. After slog-sweeping Harbhajan for a six, Baugh went after Mithun, and with the target not beyond West Indies’ reach, India took a step back.Towards the end, Bravo lost concentration and edged a wide delivery from Mithun, ending what has to be his best Test innings so far. Ishant swooped in again, making Sammy his 10th victim, with a yorker, but in fading light that’s all there was time for.

Denmark, Guernsey keep winning

A round up of the fourth day of matches of the European Championship Division One Twenty20

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Jul-2011Group AGuernsey secured their spot in the semi-finals with a comfortable, six-wicket win over Gibraltar in St Peter Port. Guernsey’s bowlers kept Gibraltar in check and restricted them to a total of 116. Only three of the Gibraltar batsmen got into double figures. Guernsey’s reply started precariously and they were 10 for 3 in the early stages. An unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 78 (off 53 balls) between Jeremy Frith, who scored 44 (off 43 balls), and Ross Kneller, who contributed an aggressive 40 (off 29 balls), helped Guernsey reach their target with 15 balls remaining.Austria strolled to their third win of the tournament, after beating Croatia by 51 runs in Port Soif. Amar Naeem’s 100 (off 63 balls) which included 13 fours and three sixes, took Austria to an imposing 176 for 3. Croatia’s opening pair of Christopher Pavac and Craig Sinovich shared in a stand of 84 but enjoyed no support from the rest of the batting line-up. Sri Lankan born offspinner Lakmal Kasturiarachchige took 5 for 22 as Croatia were bowled out for 125. Naeem effected five stumpings to cap off a brilliant all-round performance.Italy qualified for the final four with a massive 98-run win over Norway in what was effectively a quarter-final in Castel. Damian Crowley and Peter Petricola’s third-wicket partnership of 107 was the backbone of the Italy innings. With none of their batsmen scoring at a strike rate of less than 100.00, Italy put on an impressive 185 for 2. Norway were never in the chase and went from being 8 for 3 to 87 all out. Andy Northcote took 2 for 8 and Gayashan Munsinghe 2 for 6.Group BDenmark cruised into the semi-finals after beating Germany by 92 runs in St Martin. Opener Freddie Klokker scored a quickfire 91 (off 62 balls) while Shehzad Ahmed chipped in with 30 (off 23 balls) and Michael Pedersen was unbeaten on 38 (off 33 balls). Denmark finished on 166 for 1. Bashir Shah ripped through the Germany batting line-up with 4 for 8 and Pedersen took 3 for 9 and Germany crashed to 74 all out. Milano Fernando’s 28 (off 21 balls) added some respectability to an otherwise dismal scorecard.Belgium inflicted a fifth consecutive defeat on Israel, who they beat by five wickets in St Brelade. Israel lost both their openers for ducks but 17 (off 21 balls) from Josh Evans and 26 (off 23 balls) from Eshkol Solomon put them back on track. Danny Hotz contributed 40 (off 45 balls) but Israel were bowled out for 106 in 19.3 overs. Evans made sure the Belgians wobbled in reply and his 3 for 14 threatened an upset. But, at 57 for 5, Simon Newport and Nadeem Khan put on a half-century stand for the sixth wicket and took Belgium home with two overs to spare.Jersey end off the semi-final line-up after an eight wicket win over France in St Clement. France began aggressively with openers Ramesh Sitathambaranthan and A Rehman Qureshit putting on 37 in 5 overs. Jersey’s medium pacers worked well to squeeze France for runs and they could only amass 98 for 7. The chase was a stroll for Jersey who reached the target with more than five overs to spare. Edward Farley’s 57 (off 42 balls) guided them to victory.

Inexperience rife for Australia in Mohali

There were 16 Australian players at training in Mohali on Tuesday but as few as 12 might be available for the Test starting on Thursday

Brydon Coverdale12-Mar-2013There were 16 Australian players at training in Mohali on Tuesday but as few as 12 might be available for the Test starting on Thursday. James Pattinson, Mitchell Johnson and Usman Khawaja wore sheepish looks as the team gathered for its on-field meeting before the practice session began. Brad Haddin was there, newly arrived from Australia as cover for Matthew Wade, who walked without any obvious signs of pain from his sprained ankle but did not train.Australia will not rush a decision on Wade’s place in the side but he is running out of opportunities to prove his fitness after hurting his ankle while playing basketball on Saturday. The team has only one training session left, on Wednesday afternoon, and given all the crouching and quick footwork required of a wicketkeeper in Test cricket, Wade would need to go through a rigorous test before he was ruled fit to play.Should Wade sit out, it will mean the inclusion of Haddin for his first Test since January last year and his presence would provide some valuable experience to the side. Haddin flew out of Australia on Monday to provide cover for Wade and could nearly have crossed paths at Singapore airport with Shane Watson, who departed Chandigarh the same day to be with his pregnant wife, Lee Furlong. But Watson’s departure had more worrying undertones, for it came hours after he, Pattinson, Johnson and Khawaja were told they would not play the Mohali Test for failing to complete a task set by the coach Mickey Arthur. His comments about considering his cricket future have raised questions over whether he will remain a Test player, but for now the only thing that is certain is that Australia will not have his experience to call on in Mohali. That leaves Michael Clarke in charge of an extremely green outfit in which the second-most experienced Test cricketer will be either Haddin (43 Tests) or Peter Siddle (39). Should Wade be passed fit and Haddin left out, Australia would be in the remarkable position of Phillip Hughes (22 Tests) being their third most capped Test player, with Nathan Lyon (20) fourth if he is included. With that in mind the selectors might consider Haddin as a batsman only, to add some much-needed experience to the XI. The make-up of the attack is the other question, for the sidelining of Pattinson and Johnson leaves Siddle and Mitchell Starc as the only frontline fast bowlers on the one pitch of this tour that might offer some pace and bounce. That means two of the three spinners in the squad – Lyon, Xavier Doherty and Glenn Maxwell – will have to play. The other question is where Clarke will bat, after his announcement following the Hyderabad loss that he would move up the order from No. 5. On Monday, he once again confirmed that he would bat higher but said he would not decide on whether to come in at first drop or second drop until he had discussed it with the selector, Rod Marsh, who joined the squad on Tuesday, and Arthur.”I don’t know if I’m going to bat four or three but I’m not going to bat five,” Clarke said. “If it’s best for me to bat three, give me a go. Get me up there. I want to have a good chat to Rod and to Mickey, to think what our best team is and then we work out what’s the best batting order.”That conversation has been complicated by the absence of Watson and Khawaja, which means Phillip Hughes will probably retain his place despite his struggles against spin in the first two Tests. On a surface where pace could play a role early, Australia would prefer for Hughes to come in as high up the order as possible, which could mean Clarke bats at No. 4.Possible team: 1 David Warner, 2 Ed Cowan, 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Steven Smith, 6 Brad Haddin/Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Moises Henriques, 8 Glenn Maxwell, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Xavier Doherty/Nathan Lyon.

Shukla promises better injury management

The BCCI has said it will remain in close contact with the IPL franchises to ensure players remain fit for national duty

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Sep-2011In the light of the injury crisis India found themselves in on the tour of England, the BCCI has said it will remain in close contact with the IPL franchises to ensure players remain fit for national duty.”During our meeting with franchises we will emphasise that they pay most attention to these problems and give instruction to the team physios on injury management to avoid injuries,” the new IPL commissioner Rajiv Shukla told . “We will be paying full attention to these problems, we will keep in touch with physios, and various franchises so that any injury should be immediately addressed.”On a disastrous tour, where they were thrashed 4-0 in Tests and 3-0 in ODIs, India lost the services of Zaheer Khan on the first day of the first Test at Lord’s. After playing in the IPL, Virender Sehwag was ruled out of the first two Tests due to an injured shoulder while Gautam Gambhir, Praveen Kumar and Yuvraj Singh sustained injuries during the course of the series.Shukla defended the IPL, saying it shouldn’t be singled out for blame for injuries caused to players, but said the board will take steps to ensure there is “perfect” co-ordination with the franchises over the players’ fitness.”In my view, for injuries I don’t think only IPL should be blamed as every team is facing such problems and lot many players got injured during the England series also, so I don’t think IPL should be solely blamed for it,” he said. “But at the same time, the management of injury problems is also on our mind and some concrete steps will be taken to minimise injury problems. There will be perfect coordination between BCCI and various franchises.”
