Wickets tumble, but Punjab ahead

Seeing the scorecard at tea on the second day, you’d be forgiven for thinking the surface at the Chinnaswamy Stadium had transformed overnight from the featherbed it was on the first

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran at the Chinnaswamy Stadium14-Dec-2011
Scorecard
Seeing the scorecard at tea on the second day, you’d be forgiven for thinking the surface at the Chinnaswamy Stadium had transformed overnight from the featherbed it was on the first. Punjab had sauntered to 278 for 4 on Tuesday, but ten wickets went down in the first two sessions today for 154. It took a free-swinging unbroken 83-run stand between Stuart Binny and CM Gautam in the evening to show that there were no gremlins in the track. The collapses in the first two sessions came about more due to poor strokes than the bowling, which was tight without being overly threatening. Despite folding well before lunch, Punjab ended the day ahead as Karnataka’s top order put in a feeble performance. One of Karnataka’s strengths this season has been that they haven’t been overly dependent on any single batsman – five of their players have already made 300 or more runs this Ranji season. From a seemingly hopeless 100 for 5 in reply to Punjab’s 357, Binny kickstarted a revival that at least gives them an outside chance of taking the first-innings lead. Both sides are fielding virtually second-string bowling line-ups – Punjab are missing the injured Harbhajan Singh, Manpreet Gony and Love Ablish while Karnataka are without Abhimanyu Mithun, Vinay Kumar and fast bowler SL Akshay. To add to that lengthy list, Karnataka’s spearhead S Aravind was also sidelined on the first afternoon with a knee injury.A day for piling on the runs, then? It seemed as much when Punjab began with a couple of boundaries in the first three overs, but when the new ball was taken, it asked more questions of the batsmen. Binny got it to swing around, while NC Aiyappa made Amitoze Singh nervously survive a bottom-edge towards slip, an lbw shout and a caught-behind appeal in the same over.It was the left-arm spinner KP Appanna who made the big breakthrough, removing Mayank Sidhana caught-behind down the leg side for 92. The batsman couldn’t believe the decision, and his disappointment was more than just at missing out on a century. Amitoze soon became the second run-out victim of the innings, and two balls later Bipul Sharma nicked to slip. Punjab’s lower order was rolled over quickly, and Karnataka were batting earlier than they would have expected. It didn’t begin well though as the biggest name in the line-up, Robin Uthappa, flicked the first delivery of the innings to give square leg a catch. Debutant fast bowler Baltej Singh bowled with pace and troubled the batsmen, getting the ball to jag past the outside edge on several occasions. KB Pawan and Ganesh Satish responded with an overly cautious approach, and though the bowling became less troublesome once the shine went off the ball, they plodded to 50 in 28 overs.Satish perished as he attempted to release the pressure with a lofted drive, only to chip it to point. Bharat Chipli also fell to a botched drive that ended as a caught & bowled. Pawan survived two dropped chances, on the second of which the bowler Rahul Sharma set off on an extravagant celebration before realising it had been put down at slip. Rahul did get a chance to reprise it later as he had Pawan top-edging to the keeper for a nearly three-hour 32.Binny came out biffing sixes, and seemingly wondering what the top order had been worried about. He muscled boundaries through cover and point, and a swipe over midwicket brought up his half-century in 49 deliveries. Gautam was no slouch either, though most of his runs came through fours behind the wickets, either controlled sweeps or glides to third man. They took Karnataka halfway to the Punjab total, but the visitors will still be the happier side halfway through the match.

Afridi looking for exposure from stint with Melbourne Renegades

Shahid Afridi has said he views his upcoming stint with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League as an opportunity to gain exposure and prepare for next year’s international assignments

Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan allrounder, has said he views his upcoming stint with the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League as an opportunity to gain exposure and prepare for next year’s international assignments. Afridi and Pakistan team-mate Abdul Razzaq have both signed with the Renegades for Australia’s new Twenty20 tournament, and Afridi said he was taking the tournament very seriously because he had sacrificed his off season to play in it.”My commitment with the Big Bash holds a lot of importance because it was an off season for me,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “It will not only help me maintain momentum but also give me good preparation considering the tough conditions and strong opponents in Australia.”Afridi goes into the tournament, which starts on December 16, on the back of an impressive year with the ball in which he has taken 45 wickets in 27 ODIs at 20.82, with four five-wicket hauls. He struggled with the bat during the 2011 World Cup but got his highest score of the year, 75, in the third ODI of Pakistan’s recent series against Sri Lanka in the UAE. He said he expected his legspin to be effective on Australian pitches but hoped to also contribute with the bat.”Legspinners can achieve a lot in Australian conditions and I am looking forward to contributing with my bowling,” he said. “I’ve been satisfied with my bowling performance but there is need for improvement in my batting. I am looking to play some good innings.”Razzaq goes into the series after missing the ODIs in Bangladesh due to a shoulder injury he sustained during the series against Sri Lanka. He said he had completely recovered from that and was looking forward to getting back to Twenty20 cricket. Razzaq averaged 29.22 for Leicestershire during the Friends Life t20 in England this summer and said he hoped to find form in the BBL.”The format is very exciting and familiar but equally tough,” Razzaq said. “I picked up an injury last month but I am fine now and looking forward to the Big Bash event. I hope I can find good touch.”

Pristine Bell gives England the advantage

Ian Bell made his third century of the series to give England a significant advantage in the third Test

The Report by Daniel Brettig11-Aug-2013

As the shadows lengthened over Durham, Australia’s best bowler, Ryan Harris, sat England’s best batsman, Ian Bell, on his backside with a menacing bouncer from around the wicket. The moment epitomised proceedings on another winding, twisting day of the fourth Test. Harris had done most things right: choosing a simple plan and backing it up with the most wholehearted of action. But Bell survived, allying pristine technique to plenty of guts and the batting form of his life.Forty minutes later, Bell walked off Chester-le-Street with 105 unbeaten runs next to his name, England’s lead an ominous 202, and Australia a bowler short due to Shane Watson’s latest soft tissue ailment. Harris followed him, leading the tourists from the field after giving his all with bat and ball. But he lacked enough support, while Bell could point to sharp bowling by Graeme Swann and James Anderson in the morning before Kevin Pietersen and Jonny Bairstow put their heads down for critical stands.Bairstow fell in the closing moments of the day, Brad Haddin pouching a terrific catch as Nathan Lyon gained turn and bounce from around the wicket, but England had reason to be satisfied. Their top order had been dismantled by Harris, before Bell yet again proved his pre-eminence among the batsmen on either side in this Ashes series by playing with elegance and tremendous skill. He was particularly profitable through the third man region, scheming Australia’s death by a thousand late cuts.Australia had lost much of the ground fought for so doggedly by Chris Rogers with the loss of their last five wickets for 46 in the morning, Harris’s 28 the only real resistance. Haddin and Rogers failed to keep their wickets intact before the second new ball was taken, scotching any thoughts of a match-shaping lead. Swann and Anderson did the majority of the damage, before Stuart Broad notched a deserved five-wicket haul.England’s second innings began comfortably enough, but Harris conjured a glory ball that whirred in towards Joe Root before zipping sharply away off the seam to beat the outside edge and clip the top of off stump. Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott seemed intent on swifter scoring than on day one, and appeared to be doing it well until Cook drove at the line but not the length of a Harris ball going across him and edged behind.Harris was by now bowling at a slippery pace, and in his next over Trott was late on a hook at a well-directed bouncer and managed only to glove it, whereupon Haddin held a sharp chance above his head. At effectively 17 for 3 England were wavering badly, but Pietersen and Bell set about calming the innings with good sense and sound placement.Bell prospered through his pet dabs down to third man, an area Clarke kept mystifyingly vacant until Bell had made a decent start. Pietersen was troubled by the odd short ball, but signalled his greater comfort by pulling Siddle twice towards the leg side boundary. The runs accrued steadily, Clarke shuffling his bowlers around but unable to conjure the fourth wicket. He also moved from slip to mid-off, a bothersome sign for Australia that his back was creaking.Pietersen was kept a little more quiet as the evening session began, tied down notably by Siddle. His desire to avoid opening the face of his bat to Lyon’s angle around the stumps, something that hastened his exit in the first innings, resulted in ever more exaggerated flicks to the leg side. Lyon dragged Pietersen ever wider outside off, and eventually a front edge and catch at cover was procured when one ball did not turn so much as expected.Bell was unperturbed by this, and Bairstow eased his own considerable nerves by twice driving Lyon straight with power. Their stand was broken briefly by a risible call by Tony Hill and Aleem Dar to go off for bad light with blue sky visible over the ground, but by the time Lyon struck again Harris had been seen off, and the game was tilting firmly England’s way.It had begun to do so in the day’s earliest exchanges. Rogers and Haddin had resumed with thoughts of establishing a significant lead, but ultimately were unable even to reach the second new ball, due within six overs of the resumption. Haddin went back when he might have pressed forward against Swann and was lbw, his referral made for a ball that was hitting middle and off after straightening from around the wicket.Following his enormous contribution to Australia’s cause on day two, Rogers did not quite find the right rhythm, and shortly before the 80th over arrived he stretched to defend Swann and found extra bounce grazing his glove before floating up off his pad for Matt Prior to dive alertly and claim the catch. Tony Hill was unconvinced but was shown to have erred; England’s review ending Rogers’s innings.Siddle snicked Anderson low to first slip and Lyon lasted only seven balls before walking across his crease and succumbing lbw, even if Hawk Eye suggested Anderson’s nip-backer would have slid past leg stump. Three consecutive Harris boundaries from Broad stretched Australia’s advantage handily, but in the next over he was pinned in front of the stumps. Harris went on to produce more heroics with the ball, but it was to be Bell who reigned supreme. England have cause to ponder where they would have been in this series without him.

SCG's 100th Test wins world award

The SCG’s 100th Test has won the Sports Event of the Year Award, beating other major events such as Super Bowl XLVI, the London Olympics’ “Super Saturday” and the 2012 NBA All-Star game. The prize, which is for the best sporting event held at a stadium, arena or major sports venue in 2012, was announced at the 2013 Stadium Business Awards in Manchester on Friday. The SCG became only the third venue to host 100 Tests when Australia thrashed India by an innings and 68 runs in January 2012. The match was also notable for Michael Clarke’s unbeaten 329 and centuries to Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey. The judging panel, in delivering its decision, said: “Proving that it’s not just new venues – or one-off events – that define a venue’s ‘greatness’ but fundamentally it’s about longevity. When we talk about stadiums have a lifespan of 20-30 years these days, it took SCG 130 years to reach its landmark 100th Test – a milestone event (shared by very few other venues) that’s a deserved winner.”The SCG is in good company, for the past two winners of the same award were the FIFA World Cup final in South Africa and the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley Stadium.

Trent Bridge confirms ban on Billy's trumpet

England’s players are united in feeling that Nottinghamshire have made an error in refusing to allow the Barmy Army trumpeter, Billy Cooper, to play his instrument at Trent Bridge, according to Graeme Swann.

England’s players’ plea to Nottinghamshire to lift the ban on the Barmy Army trumpeter, Billy Cooper, in the first Investec Test at Trent Bridge, appears to have fallen on deaf ears after the club reiterated their stance. The vocal support of many England players, led by home town star Graeme Swann, had encouraged hopes that the county might yet relax its stance at the eleventh hour. Swann said he spoke for the England team in saying that it was “a real shame” that his home club would not allow Cooper – nicknamed Billy the Trumpet – to play as the England side consider him “the unspoken 12th man.”However, Lisa Pursehouse, the Nottinghamshire chief executive, said there will be no change in policy. “I think there’s been some hugely emotive language around this whole issue but the truth is, this is nothing new,” she told TalkSport. “Although I’ve only been chief executive for a year, I’ve been at Trent Bridge for almost ten years and the ground regulation was in place then.”Billy knows that this is not personal to him – we had exactly the same conversation in 2005. We just don’t let musical instruments into Trent Bridge. Billy’s not banned and he knows that, but it’s about the musical instrument. Billy’s been here before and he’ll sit and watch the cricket at Trent Bridge and I’m sure he’ll enjoy it.”However, the feeling among England’s players has been strong enough for ECB officials to broach the matter unofficially with Nottinghamshire to see if a compromise can be reached ahead of the start of the Ashes series.Swann said: “The players are all in favour of Billy blowing his trumpet wherever we are. He is the unspoken 12th man for us when we are on tour and in big series at home, so I think it’s a real shame he’s not allowed to play here.”Nottinghamshire have long contended that their blanket ban on musical instruments is stated on match tickets and, that being so, they could face requests for refunds from supporters who object to Cooper’s playlist. The ECB, however, is thought to have some sympathy with Cooper’s commitment to England’s cause – as well as respect for his professional playing ability.Compromises so far floated include Cooper playing from the balcony of the Trent Bridge Inn behind the ground, something which Nottinghamshire could not control, or even an official guest spot during an interval. Neither solution would recapture the feeling for England players that he plays when they most value it, during good times or bad.As a Nottinghamshire player, Swann might have been expected to have an influence on the decision. But he admitted that he had tried to persuade the authorities to no avail.”I know all the team are behind Billy the Trumpet,” Swann said. “The Barmy Army are a massive part of the English team. Nottingham have their rules as Lord’s do. It’s a shame in this day and age they can’t bend them for such a big event but so be it, it’s not my decision.”We don’t make the rules, we have just got to go out there and play our cricket now it’s been decided it’s not the right thing to do and I think that’s real shame. I have tried to have my say but I have been batted down.”A poll carried out by ESPNcricinfo on the County Cricket Live blog attracted more than 500 votes with only 15% opposing Cooper being allowed to play his trumpet at Trent Bridge.Nottinghamshire have also pointed out that Cooper was also been refused permission to play his trumpet at the 2005 Ashes Test when England secured victory on their way to regaining the Ashes. Since then, though, his presence has become a more recognisable part of England’s Test scene, at home and abroad.Pursehouse said: “There are lots of people that enjoy watching cricket without musical instruments. If you want to go to a ground where there’s drums and trumpets and big crowds you’re able to do that. There are other venues that offer that. At Trent Bridge we offer something different and that doesn’t make it wrong. It’s just different and people have always had a good time.”We’ve got a great atmosphere at Trent Bridge. We’re not stuffy or boring or any of those things and our feedback on the customer experience is fantastic and people do enjoy coming to Trent Bridge to watch the games. We’re an intimate ground, and the atmosphere is all created by the cricket.”The club aims to identify more with the traditional Test atmosphere at Lord’s in contrast to other Test grounds such as Edgbaston and Old Trafford and believes that this policy is justified by ticket sales. The match is sold out for all five days. This story was updated on July 9 with Lisa Pursehouse’s comments
