ScorecardDerbyshire’s chances of hauling themselves off the bottom of the County Championship were hit by heavy rain which washed out the second day of the match against Middlesex at Derby.No play was possible before lunch after overnight rain and further showers during the morning left the County Ground outfield saturated.Umpires Neil Mallender and Stephen Gale decided there was no chance of conditions improving enough for the game to start and made the inevitable decision following an inspection at 1.30pm.It means four sessions have now been lost after rain halted play on the opening day three overs before the scheduled team interval.Although the forecast is better for the next two days, it looks unlikely that Derbyshire will have enough time to force the win they need to close the gap on Surrey, who are one place above them at the foot of Division Two.Middlesex are in a decent position on 228 for three with opener Scott Newman unbeaten on 119, his second Championship century of the season, but the chances of them being able to put Derbyshire under enough pressure to claim victory already appear slim.

Talking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke labelled Saint-Maximin and Madueke as ‘two big targets’, adding that they ‘would cost a lot of money’.

“Madueke and Saint-Maximin are obviously two very talented players.

“Obviously, Steven Gerrard is looking to improve this Aston Villa side right now as well, like we saw in the January transfer window.

“They are two big targets for Aston Villa and either one of them would cost a lot of money.”

The Verdict: Attacking reinforcements needed?

Gerrard has mainly used a narrow 4-3-1-2 system in 2022, so it is interesting to see that two natural wide forwards have been linked with a move to Villa Park in recent weeks.

That could mean that Gerrard wants to alter his system over the summer and doesn’t rate Anwar El Ghazi, Bertrand Traore and Trezeguet, who are all thought to be set to be up for sale in the summer.

Danny Ings is another attacking player who could move on over the coming months, so it does look as if attacking reinforcements will be needed both centrally and out wide.

The chief curator at the Galle International Stadium, Jayananda Warnaweera, has ruled out producing a turning pitch for the first Test as a farewell gift to Muttiah Muralitharan, who needs eight wickets in his last Test to reach 800 wickets. Warnaweera, the former Sri Lanka offspinner, was confident Murali wouldn’t need much assistance from the conditions to reach the landmark.”If we compare the last India Test with this, we have a good wicket,” said Warnaweera. “You will ask why we are not giving Murali a turning track. But Murali doesn’t need a turning track. On any wicket, any flat wicket, Murali will take wickets. We were more concerned about number of days of cricket. What’s the word?

According to reports in Spain, the north London outfit are interested in a move for Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde but face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea.

The 23-year-old has a release clause of €80m (£66m) but it is expected that €70m (£58m) would be enough for the LaLiga outfit to sell.

Kounde would be something of a statement from Spurs as they look to desperately bolster Antonio Conte’s playing squad with quality additions and starting in defence would be a good place to start after recent results.

The Italian’s outfit have lost three successive Premier League matches on the bounce and have leaked seven goals in that run. Only glaring issue has been the options available at his disposal.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must consider giving Luis Diaz his full debut in the Premier League against Leicester City on Thursday night.

The ICC development committee has expanded the global qualification system for the World Twenty20, to give the Associate and Affiliate members of the governing body a chance to feature in the tournament. The qualification tournament, which was contested by eight teams in February 2010, is set to feature 16 sides when it is held in early 2012 ahead of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, later that year.The expanded field will comprise ten qualifiers from regional Twenty20 tournaments in addition to six countries that currently enjoy ODI/Twenty20 status. The exact details of the regional qualification network are yet to be announced.The committee has also pledged $2 million towards development of major cricket facilities in leading and targeted associates and affiliates, in partnership with members and third-parties. The members eligible to apply will include each of the top six-ranked Associates/Affiliates, China, USA and a Member nominated by each of the Africa, East Asia-Pacific and Europe regions together with any Associate or Affiliate scheduled to host certain ICC events.”These are two extremely exciting, strategic and encouraging developments for the future of our great sport,” ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said after the meeting in Jakarta. “They represent a clear sign of our ongoing commitment to growing the game beyond its traditional boundaries and ensuring that each of our members has the opportunity to develop and become the best they can be.”Cricket has never been stronger. West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Japan will compete in the tournament, in addition to one qualifying team from the Americas and two teams each from Africa and Europe. This event will double as the women’s qualifying tournament for the ICC World Twenty20 to be staged in Sri Lanka in 2012. The allocations are all subject to the finalisation of logistical and budgetary arrangements in coming weeks and months.The committee confirmed the groupings for the eight-team WCL Division Eight event from November 6 to 12, 2010, in Kuwait.Group A: Bhutan, Kuwait, Suriname and Vanuatu.Group B: Bahamas, Gibraltar, Zambia and the next highest European qualifier (to come from the regional division two event, which runs from July 13 to 19 2010).
