'Murali doesn't need a turning track' – Galle curator

Jayananda Warnaweera: “On any wicket, any flat wicket, Murali will take wickets”•AFP

The chief curator at the Galle International Stadium, Jayananda Warnaweera, has ruled out producing a turning pitch for the first Test as a farewell gift to Muttiah Muralitharan, who needs eight wickets in his last Test to reach 800 wickets. Warnaweera, the former Sri Lanka offspinner, was confident Murali wouldn’t need much assistance from the conditions to reach the landmark.”If we compare the last India Test with this, we have a good wicket,” said Warnaweera. “You will ask why we are not giving Murali a turning track. But Murali doesn’t need a turning track. On any wicket, any flat wicket, Murali will take wickets. We were more concerned about number of days of cricket. We want all five days to say cheerio to Murali.”Warnaweera said Murali’s favourable history at the venue should help his cause. “Murali has played 11 to 12 Tests in Galle, and he has nearly 110 wickets (sic. 103 wickets in 14 Tests),” he said. “That means his average is more than nine wickets a match. He needs eight wickets only. We want to have good time with Murali, so we need all five days of cricket.”There is a little bit of grass left to hold the pitch together. Any wicket will turn on the fourth, fifth day, and this should go to a fifth day. It’s up to the players, though.”India, meanwhile, didn’t have the best of days as they prepared for the Test that begins on Sunday. Overnight rain had left the practice pitches wet, and the batsmen could have a hit only in the indoor facility. The Sri Lankans enjoyed a full practice session, though, as the pitches had dried up suitably by the time they arrived.Harbhajan Singh, recovering from a fever, didn’t bowl in the nets, but indications are that he is on track to make it for the Test. In his last Test in Galle, Harbhajan took 6 for 102 and 4 for 51 to set up India’s series-levelling victory. He is now the most experienced bowler in an Indian squad depleted by the absence of Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth.

The ICC development committee has expanded the global qualification system for the World Twenty20, to give the Associate and Affiliate members of the governing body a chance to feature in the tournament. The qualification tournament, which was contested by eight teams in February 2010, is set to feature 16 sides when it is held in early 2012 ahead of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, later that year. The expanded field will comprise ten qualifiers from regional Twenty20 tournaments in addition to six countries that currently enjoy ODI/Twenty20 status. The exact details of the regional qualification network are yet to be announced. The committee has also pledged $2 million towards development of major cricket facilities in leading and targeted associates and affiliates, in partnership with members and third-parties. The members eligible to apply will include each of the top six-ranked Associates/Affiliates, China, USA and a Member nominated by each of the Africa, East Asia-Pacific and Europe regions together with any Associate or Affiliate scheduled to host certain ICC events.”These are two extremely exciting, strategic and encouraging developments for the future of our great sport,” ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said after the meeting in Jakarta. “They represent a clear sign of our ongoing commitment to growing the game beyond its traditional boundaries and ensuring that each of our members has the opportunity to develop and become the best they can be.”Cricket has never been stronger. We now have three viable formats of the game at international level – something no other sport can boast – and cricket continues to grow in popularity in almost every corner of the globe. These initiatives are steps along the path towards continued sustainable growth,” Lorgat said. While in Jakarta, the development committee received a presentation from Cricket Indonesia and attended the national Under-17 championships. In addition, Lorgat met with representatives from the Indonesian government and the national Olympic committee.”Indonesia is an outstanding example of an Affiliate Member on an upward move. It is the fastest growing member in terms of participation numbers and I believe this is due to excellent staff, volunteers, strategies, plans and partnerships that are in place,” Lorgat said. The number of ICC members, currently 104, may continue to grow as Seychelles’ application for Affiliate Membership was forwarded to the ICC Annual Conference 2010 for consideration. The committee has allocated the staging of three World Cricket League events to Hong Kong/China (Division 3 in January 2011), the United Arab Emirates (Division 2 in April 2011) and Botswana (Division 7 in March/April 2011).The qualifier for the women’s World Cup,which will determine the four teams to join England, New Zealand, Australia and India at the 2013 World Cup in India, will be staged in Bangladesh in November 2011. West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Japan will compete in the tournament, in addition to one qualifying team from the Americas and two teams each from Africa and Europe. This event will double as the women’s qualifying tournament for the ICC World Twenty20 to be staged in Sri Lanka in 2012. The allocations are all subject to the finalisation of logistical and budgetary arrangements in coming weeks and months. The committee confirmed the groupings for the eight-team WCL Division Eight event from November 6 to 12, 2010, in Kuwait.Group A: Bhutan, Kuwait, Suriname and Vanuatu.Group B: Bahamas, Gibraltar, Zambia and the next highest European qualifier (to come from the regional division two event, which runs from July 13 to 19 2010).

Liverpool must start Luis Diaz vs Leicester

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must consider giving Luis Diaz his full debut in the Premier League against Leicester City on Thursday night.

The January signing from Porto came off the bench for his first appearance in a Reds shirt in the FA Cup victory over Cardiff City at the weekend, and is pushing to make the starting line-up against the Foxes.

His case has been made even more pressing by the fact that Klopp has only just seen Mohamed Salah return from AFCON duty with Egypt.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he said: “Mo is now back, I spoke already to him. He is very disappointed of course, but looking forward to all the things coming up here now.

“He is an experienced player, he is a physical monster, to be honest, so we have to see. He will obviously have a little recovery session today and we will see how he feels tomorrow and from there we go.

“The proper plan we don’t have, play him as often and as long as possible is probably the plan, but we will not rush it. But if he is fine we will not leave him out for the wrong reasons as well, so let’s see.”

In Diaz, the Reds would be unleashing someone who could dove-tail seriously well with Diogo Jota in attack.

The 31-cap Colombia international was in scintillating form for his former side Porto this season, registering a very impressive 16 goals and six assists in only 29 appearances for the Liga NOS giants.

Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the 5 foot 10 star has been dubbed a “livewire” and as being “phenomenal” by Portuguese football expert Alex Goncalves – exactly the kind of rave reviews that would have had Klopp excited before his arrival.

With Jota becoming the spearhead of this Liverpool attack, having someone of Diaz’s pace, trickery and end product alongside him is something that could cause any team havoc, not least Leicester tomorrow.

After showcasing some of his talents against the Bluebirds at the weekend, Klopp can really have the Anfield faithful excited by starting Diaz.

Amla century makes it 4-0 for South Africa

Some inept West Indian fielding towards the end, and lack of intensity in pushing for an unlikely win, let them down and it was left to AB de Villiers to steer the more deserving team home

It really shouldn’t have got so close. South Africa appeared to have the match in the bag while Hashim Amla was at the crease and for a while after too, but somehow found a way to press the pressure button and take the game to the final ball. Some inept West Indian fielding towards the end, and lack of intensity in pushing for an unlikely win, let them down and it was left to AB de Villiers to steer the more deserving team home. The required run rate soared to 8.60 at the end of the 45th over, when South Africa had to take the mandatory batting Powerplay. Two missed chances in the outfield gave South Africa a breather and it came down to the final over, when the visitors needed a more manageable three. The scores were level after the first two balls, but Dwayne Bravo tightened the noose in the next three. de Villiers pushed the third to mid-on, shouldered arms outside off to the fourth expecting it to be a wide before failing to dig out a yorker. The infield was packed and the din around the ground increased with the expectation of a great escape. de Villiers squirted the last ball to Darren Sammy at short midwicket, who ought to have effected an easy run-out but failed to gather the ball and fluffed a throw at the stumps.Though both teams made blunders under pressure towards the end, West Indies had more wounds to tend to, primarily because of an underwhelming display in the field. With both Kemar Roach and Jerome Taylor out injured, they lacked a raw quick bowler to hurry the batsmen with bounce on a good batting pitch, and the support cast of medium pacers were ineffective with the new ball. South Africa exploited that weakness for the most part and it seemed that only complacency could cost them the game, which it almost did.Their response to 303 was set up by Hashim Amla, who was at the centrefold spread again with an ice-cool century, his second in the series . His is not a commercially driven slam-bang approach which would make IPL scouts sit up and watch. He relies more on conventional strokes and a risk-free approach, accelerating according to the match situation and picking up singles whenever possible. He battled exhaustion, scored the bulk of his runs in singles – only 30 of his runs came off boundaries when he reached his century – and could have batted till the end if his body allowed him.Using the crease, Amla drove through the covers, played short-arm pulls, cut past backward point and even scooped Sammy for six over long-off. West Indies set innovative fields for Graeme Smith – placing two short midwickets – but not for Amla. Having taken so many runs off them in the series so far, West Indies could have identified a weakness and forced him to do something different, but instead just went through the motions. The intensity dropped after Smith’s dismissal as Amla calmly collected the singles and reached his fifty, off 45 balls. He took charge of two stands of 59 and 119 with Smith and Jacques Kallis respectively, and continued grafting it out till he neared his century. A squirt to backward point got him there, but he was already running low on battery, squatting on the pitch whenever he had a breather. He tried hitting out to conserve energy, but eventually fell to a tired shot to long-off. As he trudged back, South Africa were still in control with 80 needed off nearly 12 overs with seven wickets in hand. They were lucky to have an in-form de Villiers at the crease, but the man at the other end, JP Duminy, wasn’t as fluent. West Indies plugged things back to such an extent that they didn’t concede a boundary for close to nine overs. The required rate soared to nine before de Villiers eased the pressure with a paddled-four off Ravi Rampaul. Duminy was let off twice, first by Dwayne Bravo and then Darren Bravo. An 18-run over off Kieron Pollard tilted the game back in South Africa’s favour before fortunes oscillated again till the final ball. The drama overshadowed what was an impressive comeback by the West Indian batsmen after the third ODI. It was a lesson in crafting an ideal one-day innings – start off aggressively, consolidate in the middle overs and keep wickets in hand and then let loose in the slog overs. The three main players in each of those phases were Dale Richards, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Darren Bravo, who dictated terms in different styles to take West Indies to 303 and give the Sunday crowd at Windsor Park a match to watch.Richards compensated for Chris Gayle’s failure with an attacking knock, using the crease well to unfurl elegant shots down the ground. The South Africans were disciplined through the middle overs to peg West Indies back, but importantly, the duo of Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo were prepared to see off the period by grafting, instead of letting the frustration get to their heads.West Indies took the Powerplay in the 45th over and the pair of Darren Bravo and Pollard inflicted maximum damage in a stand of 59. Darren Bravo, who has a style to match Brian Lara with his trademark high backlift and stylish foot movements, punctuated the passage of play with carved boundaries over extra cover and a one-handed six over long-off. Pollard, under pressure to deliver for West Indies, brought out a couple of monster hits off Charl Langeveldt to take West Indies towards 300.Unfortunately, it was a day the hosts couldn’t get their batting and bowling to click in cohesion and as the series rolls into the final dead rubber on Thursday, the same questions on skill and commitment will be asked.

Ausências não atrapalham, Fla vence Coritiba e avança na Copa São Paulo

Rangers transfer news on Simpson

Jordan Campbell has now revealed the latest on a potential Glasgow Rangers exit for Jack Simpson.

The Lowdown: Simpson rumours

There have been rumours going around that the Ibrox faithful have accepted a bid from QPR for Simpson, while both Middlesbrough and Swansea City have also been linked with a move for the former Bournemouth man.

He is not getting much game time at all for the Gers, having only played in five matches across all competitions so far this season, so an exit on Transfer Deadline Day does look likely at this stage.

The Latest: Campbell update

As per The Athletic journalist Campbell, reports linking Simpson with a move to QPR are ‘untrue’, and while both Swansea and Middlesbrough have made enquiries over a potential loan deal, Rangers would prefer to sell him on a permanent transfer. Campbell revealed:

“Understand that reports Jack Simpson is heading to QPR are untrue. “Swansea and Middlesbrough among the teams to have enquired about a loan deal but it’s believed Rangers will only consider a permanent transfer.” The Verdict: Sell

If the Gers can negotiate a permanent exit for Simpson, then they must do at all costs. He is simply not playing enough and would not be a big loss to Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his squad.

When he has played, he has often been criticised by both journalists and fans alike, and in truth, his move to Scottish football has not quite worked out.

Thus, given that he is 25 years of age, they could still get a decent transfer fee for him should they be able to sell.

Celtic: Sheff Utd fail with Barkas swoop

Sheffield United have pulled out of talks to sign Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas, according to The Scottish Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Surplus to requirements

The Hoops are looking to offload a number of players in the final days of the January transfer window after making five signings, with the Greece international among those expected to depart.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ange Postecoglou has already allowed Conor Hazard to join HJK Helsinki on a year-long loan deal, leaving him with Joe Hart, Scott Bain and Barkas as senior goalkeeping options.

Barkas has made just one appearance under Postecoglou all season and Celtic have high hopes for youngster Tobi Oluwayemi, but it seems as if the Hoops won’t accept any offer for the 27-year-old.

The Latest: Nicholson digs in his heels

The Scottish Daily Mail [25/1/22, print edition p.79], as relayed by 67 Hail Hail, claimed that the Blades were keen on taking Barkas to Bramall Lane.

However, the Hoops – and by extension CEO Michael Nicholson – demanded a loan fee and for Sheffield United to cover the goalkeeper’s £20,000-a-week wage. As a result, the English Championship side have pulled out of talks, as have an unnamed Swedish club.

The Verdict: Interesting

Celtic also wanted to include a £2.5m option-to-buy in any loan deal, along with a sell-on clause, after paying £4.5m for the Greece international in 2020.

You can see where the Hoops are coming from regarding numerous demands and clauses, but should they fail to offload Barkas this month, he could go several months without any first-team action.

You’d expect that such an eventuality would impact his market value in the summer, but hopefully the club can find him a new club before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Can the hosts exploit home advantage?

West Indies cricket continues to lurch from crisis to crisis and each time there is a glimmer of light they find a way to hit new depths

West Indies cricket continues to lurch from crisis to crisis and each time there is a glimmer of light they find a way to hit new depths. Ottis Gibson has returned home to take on the demanding role of trying to instil some fight and spirit back into the team and at least the recent one-day series victory against Zimbabwe reversed a depressing run of results. In truth, though, a revival has rarely felt further away. However, a quick-fire Twenty20 tournament could provide the kick that is desperately needed. Throw in home advantage and, hopefully, some passionate support from the locals and it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that they could last the distance – at least until the semi-finals. Any tournament is better the longer the hosts can maintain a challenge and it only takes a couple of innings from Chris Gayle – whose form is a barometer for the rest of his side – and suddenly the belief will begin to return. In the broader picture it is vital that this tournament is a success for the Caribbean after the debacle of the 2007 World Cup. The organisers have promised a more sympathetic handling of the event than three years back, by embracing the local culture, but nothing would help more than seeing Gayle lead his team out in the final. It’s a long shot, but not impossible.Twenty20 pedigreeThey reached the semi-final stage in England last year – dispatching Australia and the hosts on their way – while Gayle still holds the record for the highest individual score in World Twenty20 tournaments with his 117 in the opening game of the first event in South Africa. Of late their form has been less impressive with an embarrassing defeat against Zimbabwe in Trinidad when they limped to 79 for 7 chasing 106 on a turgid surface. The opening match against Ireland is a potential banana skin, but they have a good record against England in Twenty20 having beaten them in last year’s tournament.Strengths and weaknessesWest Indies are not short on batsmen who can clear the boundary. Brett Lee is still waiting for Gayle’s strike from last year to come down somewhere near The Oval, while Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard are also fearsome strikers of the ball. One area of concern will be the pace-bowling department which is still without Fidel Edwards while Jerome Taylor is nursing his way back from injury. There is also the fear that if things start to go wrong they can unravel very quickly. In a short tournament like this you can be gone before it’s barely started.Key menOf course it’s difficult to look past Chris Gayle because the team responds to their captain but Dwayne Bravo, despite a pretty woeful IPL where he scored 61 runs in eight innings and claimed four wickets at 57 for Mumbai Indians, is a wonderful cricketer and is the embodiment of the spirit that the team so desperately needs. He will want to reconfirm his credentials and should rise to the big occasion. Often outstanding at the death with the ball, he is among the finest fielders on the world.X-factorSulieman Benn doesn’t come across as the most natural of Twenty20 cricketers; he isn’t the best of fielders and can’t offer much with the bat but with the ball he could be a vital weapon if the pitches remain slow. Don’t be surprised if he takes the new ball, as he did against Zimbabwe when he finished with the extraordinary figures of 4 for 6.Vital statsGayle’s Twenty20 international strike-rate is a more-than-handy 144.92 and he has struck 25 sixes in 14 inningsKemar Roach’s IPL didn’t quite go to plan. He played two matches, bowled eight overs and went for 80 runs. The faster they come, the faster they go.
