Worcestershire have signed Graeme Cessford, a Royal Air Force Corporal, for the 2013 season.Cessford, 29, has been granted elite athlete status by the Royal Air Force which means he can take his chance in county cricket before returning to the military when his contract expires.During the 2012 season Cessford made three appearances for Worcestershire’s Second XI, taking seven wickets. He also played for Northumberland Minor Counties and Chester-le-Street in the North East Premier League.”I’m delighted to have signed for Worcestershire,” Cessford said. “I’d like to extend a massive thank you to the Royal Air Force, the RAF Sports Board, and Worcestershire for giving me this fantastic opportunity.”Worcestershire’s director of cricket, Steve Rhodes, said: “Cess has the ability to bowl with pace and this will be a valuable asset in our 2013 campaign. He will give the squad some depth for bowling spots and I am looking forward to working with him.”Squadron Leader Sally Varley added: “Corporal Graeme Cessford has been granted Elite Athlete Status by the Royal Air Force. This status allows him time to realise and develop his cricket potential through the opportunity to play for Worcestershire County Cricket Club. In addition, the Royal Air Force has exceptionally adjusted Corporal Cessford’s employment for a year to include a public relations engagement role.”Cessford is not the first county cricketer to join from the military in recent seasons after Gloucestershire signed David Wade, an active Lance Corporal with Royal Signal Corps in the British Army, although he was released after the recent 2012 season after a two-year stint where he failed to break into the First XI.

Woakes haul fends off Unicorns

A rapid half-century by Darren Maddy and three wickets in four deliveries by Chris Woakes overpowered the Unicorns as Warwickshire maintained their Clydesdale Bank 40 challenge with a 60-run victory at Edgbaston.

22-Jul-2012
ScorecardA rapid half-century by Darren Maddy and three wickets in four deliveries by Chris Woakes overpowered the Unicorns as Warwickshire maintained their Clydesdale Bank 40 challenge with a 60-run victory at Edgbaston. The county side kept up the pressure on Group C leaders Sussex by making 228 for 9 and this proved to be beyond the part-timers despite an impressive knock by veteran captain Keith Parsons. Now aged 39 and playing Minor Counties cricket for Cornwall, Parsons made 58 from 77 balls and put on 71 with ex-Leicestershire wicketkeeper Tom New (31) as the Unicorns replied with 168 for 7.Warwickshire’s patchy batting display was initially underpinned by Varun Chopra’s measured progress to 69 and then set alight by Maddy’s first half century in the competition for two years. He settled in during a stand of 57 with Chopra and despite losing a string of partners during a spirited response by the Unicorn’s bowlers, he accelerated to an unbeaten 79 from 56 balls.Warren Lee, a pace bowler who played two List A games for Kent in 2009, gave the visitors an early lift with wickets in successive overs. William Porterfield (24) put up a simple chance to mid-off and Jim Troughton drove the first ball he received to extra cover. The Unicorns’ rotation of their left-arm spinners paid off to an extent with Tim Ambrose (28) lbw to Bradley Wadlan’s second delivery and Chopra bowled in the first over of a second spell by Luke Beaven.Former Lancashire seamer Steven Cheetham later removed Rikki Clarke and Woakes in the space of seven balls but the lower order stayed long enough for Maddy to inflict maximum damage. In all he hit eight fours and two sixes.Lee had Keith Barker caught at short third man for a final return of 3 for 50, and Wadlan (2 for 37) bowled a good final over in which Paul Best was stumped and Jeetan Patel run out.The Unicorns’ response was all but extinguished as Woakes blew a hole in the top order in his opening spell of 3 for 15 in six overs. It was the ex-county professionals who averted the danger of a complete collapse, although Parsons, who hit five fours and a six, was dropped twice before Warwickshire regained their momentum.Clarke eventually ran out New from mid-off and Troughton comfortably caught Parsons at deep midwicket in the final over from left-arm spinner Best.

CSA's restructuring finalised

CSA’s restructuring process has been finalised, with decisions made “close to the Nicholson Committee recommendations”

The fate of suspended CSA chief executive Gerald Majola is set to be decided by mid-October•AFP

CSA’s restructuring process, which had been set in motion by the Nicholson Committee report – that looked into bringing about changes in the South African board after the bonus scandal involving now suspended CSA chief executive Gerald Majola – has been finalised, with decisions made “close to the Nicholson Committee recommendations”.As per the recommendations, the board has been cut down to 11 members from 24, following a meeting of the CSA’s board of directors and the steering committee (which was constituted to review the feasibility of following the Nicholson Committee report) on Saturday. This comes four months after the administration agreed to accept all the recommendations in principle.Acting CSA president Willie Basson, who called the restructure a “matter of urgency” and hoped for the restructuring plans to be put in place in the annual board meeting, said after the meeting that they have largely followed the Nicholson Committee recommendations.”I believe we have stayed close to the Nicholson recommendations and, where we have deviated, it is easily defendable.”We will now take the Board decisions to all our relevant stakeholders, and I’m confident that we are on target to implement all our decisions in time for our annual general meeting in October this year.”Meanwhile, the disciplinary hearing of Majola, who had been among the 40 CSA staff who received R4.7million ($ 671,428) as bonuses after successfully hosting the IPL and the Champions Trophy in 2009, is set to be completed by mid-October.”The legal process is also well on track and the disciplinary hearing of Gerald Majola should be completed by mid-October,” Basson said. The bonuses scandal came to light in July 2010 and various bureaucratic delays extended the final hearing, which was initially scheduled to be completed by May 31 this year.

CSK's form a worry for coach Fleming

Chennai Super Kings’ coach Stephen Fleming has said that it’s the first time his side has been challenged for form in the last two years

ESPNcricinfo staff01-May-2012With defending champions Chennai Super Kings still fourth in the points table after a five-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday, Super Kings’ coach Stephen Fleming has said that it’s the first time his side has been challenged for form in the last two years.Super Kings, who were IPL champions in 2010 and 2011, have lost five out of ten matches this year. “The nature of which we are playing needs to improve and we need to look at the personnel as well as this is the first time we’ve been challenged for form,” Fleming said. “We have been a very consistent side, but now we have to make the right decisions based on what our captain needs.”Super Kings’ batsmen have struggled to find form this year, with their top-scorer Faf du Plessis averaging 37.11 from nine innings. Fleming said that his side must play well as a unit if they want to succeed. “We’re just not getting enough runs and defending well enough,” Fleming said, “He [MS Dhoni, the captain] needs to be supported in the field. We must reassess which bowlers we need and hope our batsmen score more. Things must improve quickly.”On Monday, Knight Riders outperformed Super Kings with bat and ball as they failed to string together substantial partnerships and missed a number of run-out chances. Fleming said that though his batsmen played well, bowling and fielding was a concern.”Today we showed a lot more intent on a tough wicket but when we tried to push ahead or clear the boundary we missed out the 15 to 20 runs that we needed. Knight Riders had one good partnership (between Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis) that took the game out of our reach,” Fleming said.

Gidman leads Gloucs to third win

Gloucestershire gave their CB40 campaign a boost after an impressive performance with bat and ball by Will Gidman helped them record a crushing 109-run victory over Worcestershire at New Road.

ScorecardGloucestershire gave their CB40 campaign a boost after an impressive performance with bat and ball by Will Gidman helped them record a crushing 109-run victory over Worcestershire at New Road.Gidman, the 27-year-old all-rounder, made his first limited-overs half-century in Gloucestershire’s total of 238 for 6 and then took 2 for 10 as the Royals limped to 129 all out after losing half their side for just 25.Worcestershire’s lowest 40-over score of 86 was looking some way off until left handers James Cameron (35) and Gareth Andrew (23) mustered a face-saving partnership of 46 with the help of a couple of fielding lapses by Gloucestershire. The failure of the front-line batsman was due to good, accurate seam bowling and a sluggish pitch which consistently shackled the stroke-makers. When Vikram Solanki drove to mid-on in Gidman’s third over, he set the pattern for a dramatic collapse.Moeen Ali edged a flashing drive off James Fuller and Phil Hughes, after successive CB40 centuries against county opposition, was one of two victims in a lively spell by left-arm seamer David Payne.Cameron was the only specialist batsman to survive for any length of time but he was brilliantly caught by Kane Williamson, back-pedalling towards long on for off-spinner Jack Taylor’s first success in a spell of 2 for 21.Earlier, it was the Gidman brothers, with fifties of contrasting styles, who underpinned a Gloucestershire innings that came to life when the last seven overs produced 64 runs. Left-hander Will continued his adjustment to a new role as a one-day opener with only three fours in making 76 from 98 balls and Alex launched the late surge with a 6-4-4-6 sequence off successive deliveries from Andrew. Those were the first boundaries in 16 overs as Gloucestershire finally tired of picking off singles on the stodgy surface.Hamish Marshall’s early rush was quickly halted when he scooped a straightforward catch to deep square leg and Benny Howell was barely under way when Hughes held a more difficult chance at point. Both wickets fell to the emerging left-arm seamer Jack Shantry, and at the end of the innings he took his CB40 tally to 14 wickets in six games this season after yorking Alex Gidman for 59. Shantry also bowled Ian Cockbain for a full return of 4 for 37 but Worcestershire’s support bowlers had limited success.Daryl Mitchell had Williamson (29) caught at deep midwicket from his third ball and Moeen was on target when Will Gidman heaved across the line after a stand of 97 with his brother. The victory was Gloucestershire’s third from five Group A matches this season, with Worcestershire slumping to their third defeat from six games.
