Strauss firm on Twenty20 decision

England captain has reiterated his intent of not getting involved in Twenty20 cricket

England captain Andrew Strauss has reiterated his intent of not getting involved in Twenty20 cricket. Strauss had opted to stand down from England’s Twenty20 squad earlier this year because the format didn’t suit his accumulative style and he has said he has no plans to revisit his stance.”Never say never. But at this stage, I’ve got no plans to play Twenty20 cricket,” he was quoted as saying by . “My reasons for not playing Twenty20 cricket are firstly that there are some limitations in my game in that format and secondly I believe strongly that for me to continue playing well in the 50-over format and Test cricket something’s got to give.”You’ve got to remain reasonably fresh as an international captain, to be able to motivate people. For me, it just makes sense that I step aside from the Twenty20 and give myself the time to prepare properly for 50-over and Test cricket.”Strauss opted to keep a low profile during the Twenty20 series against South Africa, even as England were hit by key injury blows, but showed he was unaffected by his break from the action by contributing a vital half-century in the 50-over win over South Africa A. Strauss did not deny rumours that he had been almost forced into stepping back into the Twenty20 set-up last week but felt his solidity was more suited to longer periods.”There were some considerations given. But ultimately, me playing in a one-off capacity is not going to help the team long term,” he said. “I’m not going to be there in the West Indies [at the 2010 World Twenty20] – so if there are injuries there, or ‘Colly’ [captain Paul Collingwood] gets injured, someone needs to step up and take over.”

Arturo Vidal eyeing move to Spurs

According to a source close to Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal, speaking to Chilean news outlet La Tercera, some big news has emerged involving Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Inter raid…

Since Antonio Conte’s arrival at Spurs, the Lilywhites have been linked with a host of big Serie A names, especially from the 52-year-old’s former club Inter.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Nerazzurri duo Marcelo Brozovic and Stefan de Vrij have been namedropped as possible targets for Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici in the upcoming transfer window as he aims to back Conte with quality new additions.

Naturally, given the duo’s ties to Italy’s top flight, links of this nature will come out of the woodwork, but news from Chilean newspaper La Tercera concerning Vidal may be of interest to Spurs supporters.

The Latest: Close source makes Vidal to Spurs claim…

A source ‘close’ to the 34-year-old told the outlet that Conte has personally contacted Vidal over a possible move to Tottenham.

Having always wanted to play in England and the Premier League, it is believed that the veteran midfielder is actually open to joining the north London club as he eyes a potential switch.

The source explained to La Tercera:

“His former Inter coach, Antonio Conte, contacted the player to find out his availability to arrive in London.

“Arturo (Vidal) has always wanted to play in England and the option of arriving in London is something that he does not dislike either.”

The Verdict: Wrong move?

The €160,192-per-week ace (£135,000) is a big name, having been playing at the top level for years and even earning rave reviews from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola when they worked together at Bayern Munich.

Conte himself has spoke publicly of his admiration for Vidal, calling him ‘fantastic’ back in 2017 during the coach’s spell across London with Chelsea.

However, given his age, lack of sell-on value and the fact that Spurs already have two very capable centre-midfielders in Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, we advise the club to give this one a miss.

Tottenham arguably have bigger priorities in the hunt for a new defender and alternative striker to Harry Kane, with Paratici needing to invest his transfer kitty wisely.

Wolves backed to make double January swoop

Wolves need to bring in both a centre-back and a midfielder in the January transfer window, according to journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Heartbreak against Liverpool

Bruno Lage’s side suffered an agonising 1-0 defeat at home to Liverpool on Saturday, with Divock Origi pouncing at the death at Molineux.

The loss is no disaster in the grand scheme of things, however, with Wolves sitting eighth in the Premier League after the weekend action – their season will not be decided by fixtures against teams like Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Still , it may be that January reinforcements are needed if Wanderers are to mount a genuine European push, given the quality of the teams around them – West Ham for example were able to grab three points against title-chasing Chelsea on Saturday.

The Latest: Journalist backs double signing

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Hatfield says that should be the case next month, claiming there are two clear areas that need to be improved upon:

“They need a really dominant centre-half, would be ideal for them along with an energetic midfielder.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“375704”]

The Verdict: Ideal for squad depth

It makes complete sense for these areas to be focused on, with Wolves appearing to run out of the steam against Liverpool on Saturday.

In Max Kilman, Conor Coady and Romain Saiss, Lage has a strong to back-three to call upon but another option would allow him to rotate and give his key defenders the odd breather.

Someone like Lille’s Sven Botman would be ideal, having been linked with a move, with the 21-year-old’s average of 2.5 aerial duel wins per game in the league this season only bettered by Saiss (2.9).

In midfield, the likes of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho are arguably too similar, oozing technical class but not covering endless ground, so a more combative middle man could be a perfect foil for the pair – perhaps the endlessly linked Renato Sanches.

South Australia’s debutant wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman has slotted in comfortably to first-class cricket, top scoring with 62 on the opening day against his former state Victoria. However, the Bushrangers had the better of the day and dismissed the Redbacks for 292 before their openers survived two overs prior to stumps.Victoria’s players were making a rapid adjustment from Twenty20 to four-day cricket following their Champions League semi-final appearance and their bowlers quickly made the switch. Dirk Nannes and Clint McKay took the new ball and reduced South Australia to 3 for 28 before the middle order began to recover.Mark Cosgrove posted 53 and had assistance from Aaron O’Brien (47), before Cosgrove was caught on the boundary off the bowling of Andrew McDonald. Ludeman and Daniel Christian (37) continued to rebuild with a 99-run seventh-wicket partnership that ended when Ludeman was trapped lbw by Bryce McGain. It was an impressive debut for Ludeman, who moved from Victoria during the off-season and was called into the side after South Australia’s captain and gloveman Graham Manou made a quick dash to India to join Australia’s one-day squad. Ludeman struck nine fours and one six during his 82-ball innings.McKay and Nannes finished with three wickets each for Victoria. The Bushrangers reached 0 for 2 at stumps with Nick Jewell having scored the full tally and Chris Rogers yet to get off the mark.

We haven't devalued tournament – Reifer

Floyd Reifer has said he “entirely disagrees” with the suggestion that his under-strength side has devalued the competition in the ICC Champions Trophy

Cricinfo staff26-Sep-2009

West Indies stayed in the game against Australia much longer than most people expected•AFP

Floyd Reifer, the West Indies captain, has said he “entirely disagrees” with the suggestion that his under-strength side has devalued the competition in the ICC Champions Trophy. West Indies sent a weakened squad to South Africa because of an ongoing contract dispute between the first-choice players – such as Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, and Dwayne Bravo – and the board. The replacements were expected to be pushovers but have credited themselves with two fighting performances. Their bowlers gave Pakistan a scare in their opening game and they ran Australia close in the second as well, reducing them to 171 for 7 before Mitchell Johnson lifted them to 275. West Indies were in with a chance during the chase, having reached 170 for 3, before the batting collapsed and they fell 50 runs short.”Against Pakistan if we had 40 more runs things could have been different and against Australia we were in the game into the 40th over. It’s been a great effort,” Reifer said. “The important thing for us is to know that we are improving. From the first game to this one we have gotten better, as a team and as individuals.”As we play as a team, stick together and keep practising, improving our skills, we will get better. We are a new team to international cricket. We are not going to come in and dominate straight away. We must show improvement, though. We still have more time to prepare and improve our skills and our mental attitude. Getting to international standards is all about the mental attitude.”West Indies were the first team to be knocked out of the Champions Trophy after suffering two defeats but they have a game remaining against India on Wednesday. It will give their young players another opportunity to gain valuable experience in a major tournament.”We try to encourage the guys to learn and learn fast,” Reifer said. “This is international cricket and not like the domestic cricket we play back at home. We talk a lot. We talk through situations that are going to happen in the game and we ask the guys to improve, to talk cricket, to improve their all-round game – batting, bowling and fielding.”

Adams axed in predicted XI vs Leicester

Southampton really need to start picking up points, and capitalising on a Norwich vs Newcastle draw should be Ralph Hasenhuttl’s goal tonight by earning three points and pulling further away from the relegation zone into a safer position in the Premier League.

Hasenhuttl will have a challenge on his hands when it comes to beating Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City side, but with only one player out with an injury, the Saints manager has the pick of the bunch to build a team and offer a tactical masterclass against the Foxes.

Saints had an awful first half against Liverpool last weekend, conceding three goals before the interval after Hasenhuttl set up the team all out for attack, which fell flat very fast when Jota scored in the second minute of the game.

The Austrian quickly changed the formation to the back four and made two substitutions at the break that were integral to stumping Liverpool from putting more than one goal past them in the second half of the game.

With that being said, here is how Football FanCast expect Southampton to set up against Leicester City;

We expect that Hasenhuttl will play it a little safer with his formation and tactics against Leicester, after the chaos of the first half against Liverpool, with a Ralph classic 4-2-2-2 formation, adding Nathan Redmond and Nathan Tella, whilst axing Jan Bednarak and Che Adams from the starting side.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-southampton-news” title=”Check out the latest Southampton news!”]

The £74k-per-week star, Redmond, and young winger, Nathan Tella, can be introduced into the starting team to help with building play and finding space to move the ball forward to assist both Adam Armstrong and Armando Broja in goal scoring opportunities that won’t come easy creating.

Redmond offers experience, high-quality dribbling skills and a strong attacking presence that will help Saints break down the Leicester defence to hopefully score and gain control of the game very early on.

Tella, who has scored two goals and offered one assist so far this term, we expect to come back into the team after being out of favour for the starting line up over the last few weeks. The wide man proved himself useful whilst playing a part in the damage control half of the heavy defeat at Anfield last weekend, so the manager may well deem him worthy of a starting position.

Southampton really need to take a win from the Foxes this evening and Saints fans will surely be hoping Hasenhuttl has learned from his mistakes last weekend.
