We haven't devalued tournament – Reifer

West Indies stayed in the game against Australia much longer than most people expected•AFP

Floyd Reifer, the West Indies captain, has said he “entirely disagrees” with the suggestion that his under-strength side has devalued the competition in the ICC Champions Trophy. West Indies sent a weakened squad to South Africa because of an ongoing contract dispute between the first-choice players – such as Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, and Dwayne Bravo – and the board. The replacements were expected to be pushovers but have credited themselves with two fighting performances. Their bowlers gave Pakistan a scare in their opening game and they ran Australia close in the second as well, reducing them to 171 for 7 before Mitchell Johnson lifted them to 275. West Indies were in with a chance during the chase, having reached 170 for 3, before the batting collapsed and they fell 50 runs short.”Against Pakistan if we had 40 more runs things could have been different and against Australia we were in the game into the 40th over. It’s been a great effort,” Reifer said. “The important thing for us is to know that we are improving. From the first game to this one we have gotten better, as a team and as individuals.”As we play as a team, stick together and keep practising, improving our skills, we will get better. We are a new team to international cricket. We are not going to come in and dominate straight away. We must show improvement, though. We still have more time to prepare and improve our skills and our mental attitude. Getting to international standards is all about the mental attitude.”West Indies were the first team to be knocked out of the Champions Trophy after suffering two defeats but they have a game remaining against India on Wednesday. It will give their young players another opportunity to gain valuable experience in a major tournament.”We try to encourage the guys to learn and learn fast,” Reifer said. “This is international cricket and not like the domestic cricket we play back at home. We talk a lot. We talk through situations that are going to happen in the game and we ask the guys to improve, to talk cricket, to improve their all-round game – batting, bowling and fielding.”

Villa handed huge injury boost

Aston Villa have been handed a huge injury boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture.

What’s the latest?

In a recent video posted on the club website, Aston Villa’s players can be seen being put through their paces at Bodymoor Heath ahead of Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace, with central midfielder Morgan Sanson looking sharp after missing last weekend’s 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion due to an injury picked up while on holiday.

A further report by Birmingham Live also commented on the 27-year-old’s involvement in training, with John Townley writing:

“Now under the stewardship of a midfield legend and a global football icon in Gerrard, Sanson will be hoping to get fit and impress in training. He looked energetic and mobile in the latest Villa video – he’ll need to prove that he can get back up to speed in order to carry out Gerrard’s intense demands on the pitch.”

Gerrard will be buzzing

Having made a £14m move from Olympique Marseille to Aston Villa in January of this year, Sanson’s career at Villa Park has somewhat struggled to get off the ground thus far.

Indeed, since joining the club, the £14.4m-rated man has so far gone on to make just 10 first-team appearances, with 27-year-old still being yet to feature in the Premier League during the current campaign.

However, the £48k-per-week midfielder did impress during Villa’s Carabao Cup loss against Chelsea back in September, making one key pass, three tackles, one clearance, creating one big chance and winning all six of his duels – with these returns seeing the Frenchman earn a SofaScore match rating of 7.5 for his efforts.

As such, should Sanson be able to refind this form upon his return to Premier League football, he will undoubtedly provide Gerrard with a major boost in the middle of the park, one that surely leaves him buzzing. The possibility of seeing the 27-year-old back in action against Palace appears to be very real following the club’s recent video.

A expectativa é ter o time ideal no clássico. A única dúvida é na lateral esquerda, já que Guilherme Arana se recupera de lesão muscular na coxa direita e tem chances de ficar à disposição.

Hayden warns Pietersen to expect long recovery

Kevin Pietersen will spend a second night in hospital after suffering a setback in his recovery from Achilles surgery. He was admitted to a central London hospital on Monday for treatment on an infection in the stitching of his scar tissue

Matthew Hayden has warned Kevin Pietersen that his comeback from an Achilles injury could be the toughest battle of his career, after it was confirmed the England batsman was admitted to a central London hospital for treatment on an infection in the stitching of his surgically-repaired right ankle.Pietersen, who underwent the operation two-and-a-half weeks ago after England’s victory in the second Test at Lord’s, is expected to be discharged on Wednesday after spending two nights in hospital. He has been placed on a course of antibiotics and will be reassessed later in the week before resuming his rehabilitation programme, but Hayden, who also sustained a high-profile Achilles problem during the first season of IPL, said that it was a problem that was unlikely to go away.Hayden’s own Achilles problem did not require surgery, but it nevertheless curtailed his international career. He missed Australia’s 2008 tour of the Caribbean and averaged just 23.93 in nine Tests thereafter. Despite harbouring ambitions to play through to the end of the current Ashes series, Hayden announced his retirement from international cricket in January.”Frankly, the hardest thing I ever had to do was come back from that,” Hayden told Cricinfo’s Switch-Hit podcast. “My path was one of very gradual improvement over a long period of time. That was under very strict guidelines and rehabilitation programmes, and it’s to a point now thankfully, touch wood, it’s brilliant, but it’s [an issue] of constant maintenance. What I do know about any kind of tendinopathies, having suffered them right the way through my career, is that they are often a degenerative injury.”It’s not like a hamstring where you go out and pull it, and you spend a number of weeks getting back in through rehab. These are degenerative tendons, so ever since Kevin Pietersen has been running around on the plains of Africa, he would have been wearing out his Achilles tendon. Being such a big bloke, as is often the case with very long levers, it tends to increase the degree of injury. He’s got a long road to go, there’s no question about that.”Pietersen’s setback in his road to recovery was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon in a statement from the ECB. “He was seen by a wound care specialist yesterday and will receive a course of antibiotics in order to exclude infection,” read the statement.”Medical advice is that a complication can occur post surgery and in this case resulted despite Kevin closely following specialist advice on management of the wound. He will be reassessed by the specialist later this week and will return to his planned programme of rehabilitation once the wound has fully healed.”Pietersen’s operation was conducted by a leading Swedish specialist, who was flown in at the ECB’s behest, and an initial estimate was that he would be out of cricket for six weeks. That may now have to be revised. The operation, which Pietersen underwent after labouring to twin scores of 32 and 44 in the Lord’s Test, involved a small incision and trimming of the blood vessels and nerves around the inflamed tendon and was considered, in a statement from Nick Peirce, the ECB’s chief medical officer, to have been routine.”Kevin will look to undertake a comprehensive rehabilitation programme to ensure there is no risk of recurrence,” said Peirce at the time. “This is expected to be approximately six weeks but will be taken at an appropriate pace following constant review.”Pietersen was never in contention to be fit for the remainder of the Australia tour, and his initial target was the tour of South Africa which gets underway with the Champions Trophy on September 22.However, England’s national selector, Geoff Miller, admitted to Cricinfo that there were already concerns about his long-term fitness. “I’m hopeful he will be fit [for South Africa],” said Miller. “I wouldn’t say I’m confident, but I’m very, very hopeful, because he’s an integral part of the side.”In Pietersen’s absence, England’s middle order has struggled to match his authoritative style of batting, and at Headingley this week, Nos 3, 4 and 5 – Ravi Bopara, Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood – mustered 16 runs for six dismissals, the lowest combined tally in Test history.”I hate missing matches for England and especially during an Ashes summer but now that the decision has been made to undergo surgery I’m confident I can return to the England team injury-free following a course of rehabilitation,” said Pietersen at the time of his injury.

Cheeky Afridi rubs it in

Plays of the day for the first semi-final between Pakistan and South Africa at Trent Bridge

Andrew McGlashan at Trent Bridge18-Jun-2009

How not to catch a steepler•Associated Press

First ball of the day
When Shahid Afridi walked to the crease at No. 3, the noise that greeted him was deafening and he gave the crowd what they wanted. It wasn’t strictly the first ball he faced, but it was the first one he could reach after being greeted by a wide. A good length delivery from Wayne Parnell was drilled on the up over mid-on, bouncing a couple of times before crossing the ropes, as Afridi didn’t bother with playing himself in. It left the crowd baying for more and Afridi didn’t disappoint. It was to be his day.Kiss of the day
Afridi is also a player capable of rubbing the opposition up the wrong way. He is a confident character and isn’t afraid of have the odd cheeky moment. After pulling Jacques Kallis for the second of two boundaries in three balls, Afridi blew the bowler a little kiss. Kallis was far from impressed and in his next over cranked up the pace. It may have been a kiss from Afridi, but there was certainly no love lost.Trip of the day
This was easily South Africa’s worst fielding display of the tournament. The tone was set early when Graeme Smith dived over the ball at mid-off to let through a boundary, but an even more embarrassing moment belonged to Albie Morkel. Younis Khan had run the ball off the outside edge against Roelof van der Merwe and just as Morkel set off from short third man he ended up flat on the floor. Somehow he had managed to trip – he pointed to the ground, but it looked a bit like falling over fresh air – and by the time he scrambled to his feet a team-mate had retrieved the ball. van der Merwe didn’t have any sympathy with Morkel as he barked his annoyance.Drop of the day
South Africa’s dodgy fielding was unexpected, less so when Pakistan fumbled. When Smith top-edged a pull on 8 it looped high towards mid-off. It wasn’t an easy chance, but Umar Gul made it look very difficult. He circled around underneath it, then failed to even get a hand on the ball. To make matters worse he then landed awkwardly and hurt his head, although there may have been a sense of embarrassment. Fortunately, though, for Pakistan it didn’t cost too much when Mohammad Aamer showed how to take a steepler.Wicket of the day
Everything Afridi touched turned to gold. With the fourth ball of his first over he ripped a leg-break past Jacques Kallis’ outside edge, then when he had Herschelle Gibbs on strike two balls later he produced a beautifully disguised top-spinner. Gibbs, having seen his team-mate beaten, was expecting the legspinner and could only watch as the ball scooted past the inside edge and knocked back the off stump. In the 1999 World Cup semi-final against Australia, Gibbs was bowled by a stunning ball from Shane Warne. Again he had fallen to the magic of a legspinner and the nightmare was returning.Catch of the day
It won’t stand out as one of the catches of the tournament, but Shoaib Malik’s cool take at long-on to remove Kallis was a vital moment. The chase was on Kallis’ shoulders – he had accumulated and never exploded – and had just launched a massive six over long-off against Fawad Alam. He tried a repeat dose off Saeed Ajmal and sent the ball miles into the air. Malik followed it all the way, steadied himself and clutched it securely. When it mattered, Pakistan held their catches. When it mattered Pakistan turned on the style.

Rangers manager news on Gio van Bronckhorst

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing as managerial news emerged on Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Derek McInnes.

As per The Athletic, the former is now a ‘strong contender’ to replace Steven Gerrard at Ibrox and has ‘expressed his desire’ to rejoin his former club. On the other hand, McInnes – who ‘turned down’ the vacancy at the Light Blues in 2017 – is ‘not understood to be in the running’.

Van Bronckhorst has an impressive managerial CV, having guided Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in 18 years back in the 2016/17 season (BBC), while he also won four other major trophies with the Rotterdam club. Of course, he is also a two-time Premiership winner as a player with the Light Blues.

Meanwhile, McInnes’ CV is less convincing, with just two trophies to his name, and he has only managed St Johnstone, Bristol City and Aberdeen before.

Therefore, it is not a surprise to see so many Gers fans leaning towards the appointment of Van Bronckhorst over McInnes.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Dean Smith’s comments on Morgan Sanson

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has revealed that midfielder Morgan Sanson won’t be available for the meeting with West Ham this weekend.

And a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

Sanson has made just one senior appearance during the current campaign due to injury but has been back in the matchday squad in the defeats to Wolves and Arsenal.

Smith didn’t use the Frenchman, though, who Gregg Evans said lost his temper after Anwar El Ghazi was sent on as the last substitute at the Emirates last time out.

The 27-year-old reportedly took his anger out on his warm-up top and a bunch of water bottles, which was noticed by assistant manager Craig Shakespeare.

Smith admitted on Friday that Sanson and youngster Jaden Philogene-Bidace were ill and wouldn’t be available against the Hammers, however, some Villa fans didn’t seem to believe the Villa boss.

Villa posted the news regarding Sanson on their official Twitter page. This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with one labelling the treatment of Sanson as ‘disgusting’.
