Laxman puts India in total control

VVS Laxman tormented Australia with his second Test double-century and Gautam Gambhir registered his first as India batted themselves into an almost unconquerable position in the third Test. On the second successive day of complete Indian domination, Australia’s greatest achievement was simply getting to stumps without losing a wicket. But Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich were given a preview of the challenge that awaits them as the legspinners Amit Mishra and Anil Kumble spun a few deliveries viciously out of the footmarks that Australia’s bowlers had created over nearly 12 hours in the field. The openers batted out 15 overs after Kumble delayed his declaration to allow Laxman to reach 200.As soon as the milestone came with a lofted on-drive off Michael Clarke, India’s batsmen were called in. They had done their job. If the first day did not consign Australia to an unwinnable position, the second day must surely have managed it. Gambhir and Laxman compiled a mammoth 278-run partnership that left Australia tired, frustrated and wicketless for nearly three sessions. In spite of Gambhir’s achievement at his home ground, the day belonged to Laxman. His list of achievements was impressive: he went past 2000 Test runs against Australia; he recorded his sixth Test century against them; and he turned it into his second highest Test score, behind his 2000-01 effort of 281 at Eden Gardens, an innings that still gives a few Australians sleepless nights. If ever there was proof of his love of this opposition it’s his list of top Test innings – his best four are all against Australia.Laxman began the day in ominous touch and pulled brilliantly when Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson dropped short. He stalled for a while on 99 before driving Cameron White comfortably through cover for four and went on to cause problems for all the bowlers. The Australians helped him by regularly straying onto his pads and it was like handing Cookie Monster control of the Arnott’s factory. At one stage Ricky Ponting even effectively relocated the slips cordon to short midwicket to handle the situation. It was reminiscent of the old Test Match board game where children carefully place their little plastic fielders in unorthodox positions to deal with the predictability of the restrictive batting mechanism.Ponting lined up his three catching men – a misnomer as they weren’t offered any catches – on the leg-side but Laxman still found the spaces with casual flicks and well-timed drives. And unlike the Test Match batsman there is nothing restrictive about Laxman’s technique, so he also took the opportunity to glide easy runs through the vacant slip region. He left some of his most flabbergasting shots until late in the day. Can anyone truly explain how he turned a Johnson delivery that was angled across him and was well outside off stump into an on-drive for four? And yet he did it so effortlessly that viewers could not help but assume that was the most logical stroke for that delivery.Smart StatsGautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman’s stand of 278 is the second-highest fourth-wicket partnership for India against Australia, and India’s third-highest for the fourth wicket against all teams.Laxman became the second Indian, and the 17th player overall, to score 2000 runs against Australia.Gambhir’s score of 206 is the highest by an Indian left-hand batsman against Australia, and also the highest for a left-hand opener against them.Laxman featured in a partnership of 200 or more against Australia for the fourth time in his career, the most by any player. Brian Lara, Richie Richardson, and David Gower have each featured thrice in double-century partnerships against Australia. This is the first time that Indian batsmen have scored two double-centuries in an innings. It is also the first time such a feat has been achieved by any team against Australia. A team innings has included two double centuries on 14 occasions, with Grame Smith’s 232 and Neil McKenzie’s 226, against Bangladesh in February 2008, being the latest such instance Laxman scored at a rate of over four an over against each of Australia’s pace bowlers, except Stuart Clark. Mitchell Johnson conceded 47 off 52 balls while Brett Lee gave away 38 from 54. Shane Watson went for 27 off 35, but Clark was by far the most economical, conceding just 17 in 51 balls at a rate of 2.11.In Laxman’s company, Gambhir was as anonymous as one can be in reaching 200. He played some impressive shots of his own; he clubbed White contemptuously through midwicket and when things became so desperate for Australia that Ricky Ponting bowled for the first time since 2005-06, Gambhir pulled his slow-medium bouncer easily over the infield for four. When Gambhir got his double-century with a clip off his hips from Lee, his celebrations were relatively muted. There was a raise of the bat and a handshake from a smiling and admiring Lee, but Gambhir was clearly exhausted. The proof came when he wearily played on to Shane Watson on 206. It was Australia’s first success since Sachin Tendulkar departed just before tea on the first day.By the time Gambhir went, India were 435 for 4. It was all rather academic after that. Laxman kept scoring, the lower order gave him impressive support and Australia kept toiling without much hope of achieving anything of real value. But a few things were confirmed in the period that followed, namely that Katich should bowl more often, Johnson is a tireless worker and Brad Haddin is struggling with such long and hot days behind the stumps. It has been a tough tour for Haddin, who has had to deal with unfamiliar pace and bounce while trying to maintain his concentration. His worst moment came when Laxman, on 134, got a thick edge off Watson. The ball flew between the wicketkeeper and first slip but it was so close to Haddin that he would not have needed to dive; as it was, he didn’t even move.Haddin did grasp a second, almost identical chance soon after to remove Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had been briefly entertaining in smashing 27. The reflexes of Katich were sharper. Dhoni pulled violently back at head height towards the bowler Katich, who somehow got his left hand to the ball and simultaneously dropped an almost impossible chance while saving the umpire Aleem Dar from losing a few teeth.Had Katich pinched the chance it would have been two wickets in two overs after he removed Sourav Ganguly for 5. It was strange that Ponting had not asked Katich, a left-arm wrist-spinner, to bowl to Ganguly earlier in the series. The similarly-styled Brad Hogg removed Ganguly four times in last season’s Tests and Katich duly continued the trend, drawing Ganguly into a drive to Ponting at cover.Katich, White, Clarke and Ponting all bowled spells that helped relieve the fast men, who couldn’t find much movement and were often given depressingly defensive fields. But Johnson showed heart and was still firing in short and fast stuff late in the day. He was rewarded with an lbw decision against Kumble (45) and finished with 3 for 142.The very fact that Johnson’s figures were considered reasonable highlighted just how much India dominated the first two days. The first belonged to Gambhir, the second to Laxman – for Australia to rescue the match, the third day must be emphatically claimed by one of their top six.

Campeão do Módulo II do Mineiro, técnico do Patrocinense exalta planejamento

Essex wait on floodplain meeting

Dhoni lauds Badrinath effort

Captain praises Zaheer Khan for taking the pressure off the batsmen with his opening burst of pace and swing

On the day when Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar and boxer Vijender Kumar provided unanticipated boosts to the country’s Olympic campaign, India’s one-day team tussled and tugged their way to a series-leveling victory in Dambulla. It started India’s way emphatically through Zaheer Khan’s enthralling opening spell, tilted Sri Lanka’s way when India slipped to 75 for 5, and was finished authoritatively by two middle-order batsmen with an appetite for a scrap. One half of a match-winning stand of 60 in 15.5 overs, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, paid credit to the man who eventually took India home – debutant Subramaniam Badrinath. “Its good to have him,” said Dhoni. “He was under pressure on debut, especially against Murali and Mendis, but he played them really well. He took up the challenge and responsibility and showed some character.”When Badrinath hit the winnings runs and jogged down the other end, pumping his right fist, the relief was clear for a batsman who voiced his disappointment at continually being overlooked for national selection. The closest that he came was when he was called up as a replacement for the injured Gautam Gambhir during the one-day series at home against Australia in October 2007. Having replaced Sachin Tendulkar in the current ODI team, it was an injury to Gambhir again which allowed him his debut, and he played with creditable determination to guide India home.”He’s very talented, and that’s why he is here,” said Dhoni. “He’s been performing consistently over the years back home and on India A tours. It was reversing and turning a bit, and at one end we had a batsman [Badrinath] but the other end was open.”It was Badrinath’s first game and he had the pressure of scoring. That’s what gives you confidence and the more experience you get the better. You don’t need to play 100 games for that. Even 25 such games will give you much more experience. The more you are in these conditions, the more comfortable you will be in the future. It is good preparation, but it takes its toll too. You need to really concentrate.”Dhoni is no stranger to walking in under pressure and performing a rescue act, and he downplayed his contribution with a smile. “Well I’m losing some hair, but it is a pleasure to go out there under pressure and perform,” he said. “That’s what you’re supposed to do at this level. People expect you to score and it’s a privilege. A win is always good because the morale goes up and you start believing you can deal with pressure. Once you’re square, you can look into the opponents’ eyes and tell them that if we play good cricket, we can definitely beat you.”Zaheer, one of the unsung performers in the Tests, had taken immense pressure off the batsmen having to deal with Sri Lanka’s spinners. A spate of injuries forced Dhoni to “bowl out of compulsion” despite a pitch that appeared good for batting by his assessment. In a fiery opening burst of pace and swing, Zaheer left Sri Lanka 10 for 3. In a tour so dominated by spin, it was refreshing to see pace make its presence felt.”Zaheer has been consistent throughout,” said Dhoni. “I’ve been playing for four years and I’ve seen him bowl like this. He has moved way ahead when it comes to his fielding as well. He’s there more than 100%. He bowled really well in England too, and it’s really good to have someone like him.”It has been a tough tour for India’s bowlers. There was some assistance for the seam bowlers in the last two ODIs, but in the Tests it was an uphill struggle. Dhoni credited his bowlers for turning in an accomplished performance. “Not just Zaheer, the others did a great job,” he said. “At times when a bowler doesn’t get wickets people tend to say he’s a weak bowler, but it is about the effort put in. You won’t always have a good day. Unless you bowl in partnerships you won’t get wickets. If Zaheer struck, Praveen Kumar’s impact was also good. He bowled really well with the new ball.”The Indian captain also sounded a word of caution and believed that spin may come into play in the next three outings at Colombo. “It was a deceptive pitch, with something in it for the fast bowlers,” he said. “In tough, hot and humid conditions, they bowled consistently, but I don’t think they will get such conditions in the coming matches.”

Art of Defending – as football progresses, so has defending

It’s no secret that the art of defending has probably progressed quicker than any other skill needed to play the beautiful game.

Back in the day it was almost always about making sure the ball was cleared, no matter what, with hitting row Z being a particular bonus point.

But now it’s all about passing, positioning, reading the game and helping the the midfielders and strikers press the opposition.

Betway Insider have spoken to a number of top ex-Premier League defenders, all of which have won numerous Premier League titles whilst playing for the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, and they’ve been recalling what it was like defending in their time as professionals compared to what they’re seeing in the modern game.

Gary Pallister, who won four Premier League titles with Manchester United between 1992 and 1997, points to how much the quality of the pitches have improved over time, explaining: “A lot of the issues were to do with the pitches.

“If you look at the pitches I played on in the early part of my career, they looked like rugby pitches. Nowadays they’re like bowling greens and you can take more risks if you trust the pitch.”

Nigel Winterburn, a Premier League title winner in 1997/1998 and two-time First Division winner between 1988 and 1991, points to the fact you no longer have to just be a good defender in order to make it in the modern game, you have to be more of an allrounder.

“When I played, you had to be an outstanding defender or you wouldn’t get into one of the top four teams,” he said.

“Now you don’t have to be as good defensively, but if you don’t have that quality on the ball then you probably wouldn’t get into a top team.”

And Lauren, another Premier League title winner with Arsenal, twice lifting the trophy, puts it perfectly, suggesting that as the game evolves, so does the players and the positions involved.

He said: “Not everything from today’s game is fantastic. But to be the best now, you have to combine the best of the most traditional skills and the best of the modern-day skills.

“Evolution is good.”

Paul Stewart fears Son could leave Spurs if Kane seals exit

Paul Stewart fears Tottenham Hotspur may face a challenge in keeping Son Heung-Min if Harry Kane forces a move out of the club.

Star striker Kane is looking to leave Spurs before the transfer window closes in a bid to boost his chances of winning more silverware.

The England captain has hit the headlines for failing to return to Hotspur Way for pre-season training this week and Manchester City are keen to persuade Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sell last season’s Premier League top goalscorer.

While Kane is itching to leave north London, Son committed his future to Spurs by penning a new four-year deal last month.

The South Korea international scored 22 goals and registered 17 assists in 51 appearances last term.

Son’s fine form led to speculation that Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich were looking to make a move and potentially seal his return to Germany having already featured for Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen prior to heading to the Premier League.

Former Spurs ace Stewart fears signing a new contract could count for little if a major force looks to sign Son.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “When Harry stated his intention to leave, I said Spurs have got to be careful because people will be coming in for Son.

“Son was outstanding last season and he would be disappointed in the departure of Harry.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if one of the big teams in Europe came knocking on the door for Son.”
