It’s thought that defensive duo Eric Dier and Matt Doherty could be two players that the Premier League outfit are looking to sell, as revealed by talkSPORT’s transfer expert Alex Crook on the ‘White and Jordan’ show this week.

“I think there will be more departures from North London this summer. And maybe some surprising names on this list.

“We know they’re open to offers for Davinson Sanchez and I’ve been told this morning that Eric Dier and Matt Doherty could also be surplus to requirements, and maybe that’s a bit of a surprise in the case of Doherty because he performed so admirably under Nuno at Wolves.”

Two key culprits

Spurs’ struggles at the back last season were no secret, and it is indeed why newly-appointed sporting director Fabio Paratici is primarily targeting additions in defence, notably in both Dier and Doherty’s positions.

Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero and Bologna right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu could be two instant replacements if negotiations go in favour of the Lilywhites in the coming days and weeks.

A combination of individual mistakes – such as Dier’s calamitous display at Leeds – and a lack of true leadership led to Spurs recording the worst defensive record of the traditional ‘big six’ – even arch-rivals Arsenal, who finished lower in the table, had a better defensive record.

Ontem (quarta) eu já fiz a preleção, falei depois do jogo, já estão de saco cheio da gente (risos). Eu tenho que cuidar desses aqui (que não jogaram). E dei o treino como se todos fossem jogar sábado. Todos estão preparados para jogar no sábado – completou.

Historicamente, a CBF – desde os tempos em que era CBD (Confederação Brasileira de Desportos, cuidando de todas as modalidades, além do futebol) nunca fez questão de se colocar ao lado dos clubes. Ainda mais durante a dinastia Teixeira-Marin-Del Nero, explorar a Seleção, os contratos milionários de patrocínios e os negócios, nem sempre lícitos como hoje se sabe, sempre foram as prioridades da entidade. Além, é claro, do jogo político e de favores às federações, como forma de perpetuação no poder da cartolagem tupiniquim.

Não era de esperar-se, portanto, que em um momento de crise como o que o mundo vive, com a bola parada em todo o planeta, a CBF tomasse a iniciativa de espontaneamente assumir uma atitude para ajudar os clubes. Depois de determinar suspensão dos campeonatos – um dos últimos países a fazê-lo, registre-se -, a entidade mor do futebol brasileiro silenciou-se como se nada mais houvesse a ser feito, e os problemas advindos da paralisação simplesmente não lhes dissessem respeito. E, por quase um mês, fez-se de morta, frente ao apelo dos clubes por ajuda.

Eis que, na semana passada, e somente na semana passada, vestiu-se de benfeitora e, enfim, anunciou medidas concretas. Pouco mais de R$ 19 milhões foram destinados aos clubes das Séries C e D e ao futebol feminino, além das federações. O dinheiro foi assim distribuído: R$ 120 mil para cada um dos 68 clubes da Série D, R$ 200 mil para os 20 clubes da Série C, R$ 120 mil para os 16 clubes da primeira divisão feminina, R$ 50 mil para os 36 clubes da Série A2 feminina e R$ 120 mil para cada federação. No caso das Séries C e D, esse valor, segundo a CBF, representa dois meses da folha salarial média de cada clube.

Antes desta verba, sejamos justos, a Confederação já havia decidido isentar os clubes do pagamento por tempo indeterminado das taxas de registro e transferência de jogadores, o que representa ter aberto mão de uma receita média de R$ 1,3 milhão mensais. Também já havia concordado com a antecipação de cotas para os clubes da Série B. Em ambos os casos, porém, não se tratava de verbas próprias desembolsadas pela entidade.

São migalhas!

Em 2019, pelo balanço que a contragosto torna público por mera obrigação legal, a CBF, como se sabe uma entidade sem fins lucrativos, teve uma receita de R$ 957 milhões e um lucro de R$ 190 milhões. Ou seja, o que está sendo liberado agora é tão somente 10% do valor desse superávit. O que torna-se uma quantia ainda mais insignificante quando se sabe que, nos últimos 13 anos, a CBF teve superávits sucessivos no seu balancete, somando, em valores absolutos, sem correção inflacionária, pouco mais de R$ 830 milhões nesse período. Onde melhor aplicar, então, todo esse dinheiro do que na manutenção da saúde financeira do futebol brasileiro?

Os clubes não pedem muito. Buscam, antes de tudo, sua sobrevivência em um momento de absoluta excepcionalidade. A ajuda da CBF deixa de fora, por exemplo, todos os clubes que disputam os estaduais paralisados – para muitos a única fonte de renda durante todo ano – e que não estão classificados para as séries C e D do Brasileirão. Junte-se a isso, a insegurança provocada pela indefinição do calendário, da forma de conclusão desses torneios estaduais e mesmo da disputa do Brasileiro em todas as suas divisões – inclusive a elite – que vem impedindo a elaboração de um planejamento financeiro e operacional minimamente confiável até o final de 2020. E temos um cenário de caos.

A postura da CBF, economizando recursos no apoio financeiro aos clubes e o adiamento de decisões que precisam ser tomadas rapidamente, revelam mais uma vez a miopia da cartolagem. Sem clubes, por mais que a CBF não os valorize, não existe futebol. Deixá-los morrer é matar, portanto o próprio futebol. Simples assim, não é mesmo? Pois o inacreditável é que ainda haja gente que não vê – ou faz que não vê – tamanha obviedade.

Everton’s hopes of signing Matheus Nunes look to be over, with Rafa Benitez’s appointment reportedly scuppering any chances of a deal for the Sporting Lisbon ace.

What’s the word?

According to Portuguese news outlet Record (via Sport Witness), whilst Everton were ‘very close’ to signing the 22-year-old just a few weeks ago, they no longer appear to be interested in him following Benitez’s arrival at Goodison Park.

It is suggested that, had Everton appointed former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as they looked close to doing not long ago, then a deal for Nunes would likely have been completed for around €16m, despite his €60m release clause with the Liga NOS side.

Would Nunes have been a good signing for Everton?

Nunes was a regular for Sporting Lisbon last season as they were crowned champions of the Portuguese top-flight, making 31 league appearances and contributing three goals and two assists.

Whilst Everton boast strong options such as Allan, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Abdoulaye Doucoure in their midfield, all of these players are 28 or older, and Nunes could have perhaps been a long-term successor in the heart of Everton’s side.

Former teammate Goncalo Santos detailed why Nunes would be such a good signing for Everton earlier this year when he spoke to Liverpool Echo, saying:

“Matheus is a box-to-box player. He’s not so strong like midfielders in the Premier League but he’s very fast. He’s very good with the ball because he is a Brazilian boy. They know how to play with the ball.

“If you are in the defensive phase and he gets the ball, he can run with it and fire the team 30 yards up the pitch because he is so good in possession.”

Therefore, it seems clear that Nunes would have been a good option for Everton to have next season and in the long-term, so Blues fans will undoubtedly be gutted that the appointment of Benitez has seemingly caused the deal to fall through.

Football.London’s Chelsea correspondent Sam Inkersole, has virtually ruled out Timo Werner exiting the club this window.

The German made the much-anticipated move from RB Leipzig 12 months ago, and despite the Blues winning the Champions League and Werner scoring more goals and assists than anyone else in squad, he’s been mainly underwhelming.

He contributed to 27 goals in his 53 appearances in all competitions, which are impressive numbers, but missed several big chances – and netted just six times in the Premier League.

Despite his confidence issues in front of goal, Thomas Tuchel continued to back his compatriot, with only Mason Mount playing more for Chelsea than the Germany international last term.

His poor first campaign in English football led to speculation over his future and whether the Blues would look to cash-in on him after just one season.

But with Olivier Giroud expected to complete a move to AC Milan, and both Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi both out of favour under Tuchel, Inkersole told Football FanCast that Chelsea’s lack of strikers should lead to Werner staying at Stamford Bridge:

“There’s not a lot of strikers on the books at Chelsea. I’d be very surprised if Werner left after one season.

“Tuchel showed a lot of trust in him, he played him regularly. You have to put it into perspective, it’s his first season away from Germany, new league, new team, but I’d be staggered if he goes anywhere this summer.”
