Road to victory after Nairobi has been a long one for Kiwis

Lynn McConnell04-Jan-2001It’s a long way from Nairobi to Wellington, and it has been just as long between One-Day International victories for New Zealand, but their eight-wicket win at WestpacTrust Stadium tonight was more like the form expected from the side by a discerning cricket public. The win set up the chance for a great series finale in Auckland on Sunday with the New Zealanders showing tonight what exciting potential they have, if they can get their match requirements on song.Zimbabwe scored 236/7 in its 50 overs after deciding to bat first and while captain Heath Streak felt it was 30 runs short of what was needed, the innings of 111 by Alistair Campbell, who scored the first century at the new stadium venue, had shown conditions were good for batting.New Zealand claimed the win with 28 balls remaining. Nathan Astle was 89 not out while Mathew Sinclair scored 85.

Coach David Trist said: “We produced an emphatic all round performance that was very pleasing, very necessary and obviously takes the side forward to Eden Park in a positive frame.”The greatest bonus was in getting a solid start with the batting, but there was much to savour in a tidier bowling performance. It is 32 matches since New Zealand has managed a century opening partnership in ODIs. That was the first ODI in India in November 1999 when Astle and Craig Spearman opened the innings.Tonight was only the third time Astle and Sinclair have opened the innings. It was Sinclair’s first half century in ODIs, his previous highest being 19 against Australia, while Astle scored his 25th half century.Sinclair raced to his 50 from 65 balls, hitting seven fours, while Astle took 67 balls and hit three fours and two sixes. They recorded the highest opening stand since the 115 against India and went on to better the 147-run record against Zimbabwe achieved by Llorne Howell and Astle at Napier in 1997/98.When parted at 153, they were five runs runs short of the all-time New Zealand ODI record of 158, scored against Bangladesh in Sharjah by Martin Crowe and John Wright. It was the highest ODI opening partnership since 1996/97 when Astle and Bryan Young scored 155 against Pakistan at Mohali.Sinclair was run out when on 85, scored off 120 balls with nine fours and a six. He was in control tonight and looked as free in his strokeplay as he has since his epic debut innings in Test cricket against the West Indies last summer.A century looked on the cards but momentary hesitation in the running allowed Guy Whittall to gather the ball back in and return it to Heath Streak who rebounded the ball onto the stumps to catch Sinclair well short.Trist said openers in the past have not taken the time to assess their options and were guilty of being bold and often not thoughtful enough before launching into their assault during the first 15 overs.Astle carried on to become only the second New Zealander to pass 4000 runs in ODIs. He achieved the milestone when reaching 64. Martin Crowe scored 4704 in his 143 ODIs.Today’s match was Astle’s 123rd.Trist said New Zealand had learnt from both matches of the series to date.”We respect Zimbabwe and we are pretty pleased to come out of the game with a result like that.”If we had a greater focus and desire to win then so be it. I don’t think our disicplines change greatly and our desire to win and produce good performances, we just had a shocker [in Taupo] and we don’t want to go back along that road again.”Skipper Stephen Fleming required order and partnerships from the side and James Franklin and Scott Styris had provided that when taking the ball to bowl at the start of Zimbabwe’s innings.”Later on everyone who stepped up to the plate bowled tidily and used the conditions pretty well and although we didn’t quite get the finish right, which has been a worry, there was an improvement in the all-round bowling and the fielding matched it,” he said.Scott Styris was also promoted to No 3 and hit a quick fire 48 off 43 balls.”He showed that if he sticks to quality cricket shots he’s a threat to be taken aware of by all international sides,” Trist said.Styris was regarded as a shaker by the side’s management.”He continues to flatter at times yet we know he’s got a lot to offer. We’re optimistic about where he is heading,” he said.New Zealand’s effort was most notably improved in the field and bowling where there was a greater sharpness in everything the side did. This seemed to set the trend for the rest of the day.

Sunderland eyeing Tanser move

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman must seal a deal to sign St Johnstone defender Scott Tanser amid interest from League One rivals.

What’s the talk?

According to the Sunderland Echo, St Johnstone defender left-back Tanser is one of the players on the club’s radar heading into the summer transfer window. The report claims that Sunderland are eager to add to their depth at left-back and that they have already offered a new contract to Denver Hume, who is the only senior left-back at the club.

Three of their League One rivals are also interested in the fullback. According to Football Insider, Doncaster, Sheffield Wednesday and Shrewsbury are all keen on a deal for Tanser. He is out of contract at the end of the month and appears set to depart from the Scottish club on a free transfer, allowing Sunderland and the other interested parties to swoop in without negotiating with St Johnstone.

Callum Davidson called Tanser “tremendous” and the St Johnstone boss lauded the defender’s attitude earlier this season. He told FourFourTwo:

“Scott Tanser, who I thought was tremendous, again could be disappointed (to be left out at Hampden) but what an attitude he showed.”

Sunderland fans would love it

Sunderland fans would love it if the club are able to bring Tanser in this summer. Speakman has already decided to release Callum McFadzean at the end of the month, with the left-back having not been offered a contract extension at the Stadium of Light. McFadzean started 20 of Sunderland’s games in League One at left-back and his exit opens the door for a fullback to come in and take his place.

Tanser would be exactly that; a quality recruit. The 27-year-old enjoyed an impressive season with St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership and proved his talent as a defender. He averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.08 in 17 starts as a left wing-back for St Johnstone, whilst McFadzean averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.61 in 20 starts as a left-back.

This suggests that Tanser would be a sizeable upgrade on McFadzean and Speakman could be playing a blinder by allowing the latter to leave on a free and replacing him with the former for nothing.

The £800-per-week beast could come in and compete with Hume for a starting spot, should Hume decide to accept the club’s attempts to pin him down to a new deal. Hume averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.03 in 13 starts as a left wing-back for Sunderland, which shows that he is considerably closer to Tanser in terms of quality than McFadzean. This could allow Hume and Tanser to battle it out for the jersey and potentially push each other on to improve, creating competition for places in Lee Johnson’s squad.

And in other news; Sunderland are lining up a deal for this ace…

Man Utd linked with Raphael Varane

Manchester United’s transfer plans have suffered a major blow after reports revealed Paris Saint-Germain have entered the race for Raphael Varane’s signature.

What’s the story?

The Red Devils have been strongly linked with a move for the 28-year-old defender in recent weeks as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer attempts to bolster his first-team squad.

But acquiring Varane’s signature this summer may have become significantly harder for United after PSG made contact with the France international’s representatives, according to Foot Mercato.

Solskjaer will be gutted

After 10 trophy-laden years at the Bernabeu, Varane’s time in the Spanish capital appears to be drawing to a close after he failed to agree to terms on a new contract.

With his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2022, Madrid are keen to sell the World Cup winner centre-back over the coming months while they can still demand a sizeable fee.

Reports over the last few days claimed that the Los Blancos hierarchy had dropped their asking price from £60m to £43m in order to attract more interest in the player, and it appears as though that strategy has worked.

Varane has made 360 appearances for the La Liga giants during his time with the club, winning an incredible four Champions League crowns, league titles and one Copa del Rey.

His former boss, Zinedine Zidane raved: “He’s won a lot and shown his ability to be a leader, help others and show what he’s capable of doing out on the pitch. He deserves the two goals in the last game and the character to give us the win.”

And, former United man Gary Neville added: “That’s why I put Raphael Varane ahead of Virgil van Dijk. He’s won so many European Cups, a World Cup, he’s an amazing player.”

It’s no surprise, therefore, that his apparent availability is attracting the attention of several top clubs across the continent, but news of PSG’s interest will surely leave Solskjaer feeling gutted.

The Old Trafford outfit finished a dozen points behind champions Manchester City in the fight for the Premier League title last season, and centre-back has been a problem position for United for some time now.

Although bringing in Varane to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of defence wouldn’t automatically solve the issues at the back for the 20-time English champions, his arrival would be seen as a significant coup and statement of intent from the club’s hierarchy.

With their domestic rivals already making progress in the transfer market this summer, United will need to strengthen in order to challenge for major honours next term, but their hopes of bringing in Varane has just suffered a sizeable setback.

Forecast causes concern for Lancashire

Richard Latham22-Apr-2001Umpires Graham Burgess and David Shepherd had planned a 1.15pm inspection following an early lunch, but the weather was not about to relent.Further heavy rain during the afternoon ruled out any prospect of play before tea, and with puddles forming on the outfield, play was finally abandoned for the day without a ball bowled at shortly after 4pm, much to the frustration of a Lancashire team also concerned by tomorrow’s forecast.Somerset were due to resume on 106-6 in their second innings, still needing68 runs to make the visitors bat again.Their hopes rested on left-handed opener Piran Holloway, who was unbeatenon 52.

Quero essa pressão, porque me acho melhor jogando assim. Agora almejo o profissional e almejo ganhar muitos títulos. Deixa a Europa mais para frente… – reflete o menino de 17 anos.

Fonseca could revive Doherty’s Spurs career

Tottenham Hotspur could announce Paulo Fonseca as their next manager this week, according to Fabrizio Romano in the Guardian.

He claims that the 48-year-old Portuguese is set to sign an initial two-year deal, with the option of a third season, after talks progressed well over the weekend.

Fonseca left Serie A outfit AS Roma at the end of the season and was soon replaced by Jose Mourinho, who was sacked by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy in mid-April.

It’s certainly an intriguing situation, especially given the influence of the newly-appointed director of football Fabio Paratici, so it’ll be interesting to see how well the former Shakhtar Donetsk boss does.

He will be expected to work with the current squad, which includes the development of their up-and-coming academy stars but who could benefit most?

Football FanCast takes a look at one first-team star in line for a massive boost…

On the Chalkboard

Fonseca’s primary system at Roma this campaign was a 3-5-2, which focuses heavily on the use of two wing-backs. If he uses this same system at Spurs, Sergio Reguilon is the likely left-sided option but we could well see the revival of Matt Doherty on the right.

Fonseca’s heavy-possession approach saw them rank 12th-best across Europe for attacking. By comparison, Spurs ranked 30th and eighth in the Premier League.

The manager liked his Roma team to use a low-block but they quickly reacted and countered at pace when gaining the ball.

It’s a hugely exciting brand of football, and a style in which someone like Doherty could thrive, thanks to him playing a similar role during his time at Wolves.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-spurs-news-transfer-gossip-rumours-manager-update-fonseca-paratici-levy” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, injury updates and more!”]

“I’d put them [Roma] with Atalanta and Sassuolo as the league’s entertainers,” claimed The Athletic’s James Horncastle, whilst they have also been lauded as a “formidable attacking side.”

Under Mourinho, the Irishman struggled to cement a regular place down in the starting XI, playing from the off just 13 times in the Premier League and it even led to major doubts over his future in North London.

After their defeat to Liverpool, journalist Julien Laurens claimed Mourinho was “roasting him the whole game” to ESPN FC. “He had him [Mourinho] in his ear all the time because he made mistakes because he was not very good.”

ESPN then claimed that had his form not improved under the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’, then there was a chance he’d have been made available for transfer, only one year after his £15m switch from Molineux.

There has even been the suggestion of a return to Wolves for a cut-price fee this summer, according to Football Insider.

The likely arrival of Fonseca could give Doherty a new lease of life, especially with Serge Aurier seemingly out the door, as per Sky Sports.

Valued at £18m by CIES Football Observatory, Doherty was once described as the “weak link” in the Spurs team by BBC contributors Premier League Panel, following their North London derby defeat.

Whilst The Athletic’s Seb Stafford-Bloor claimed the 29-year-old “got progressively worse” as the season went on.

The £60k-per-week defender was never the right fit for Mourinho’s back-four system but with Fonseca, he could well be given a huge lifeline.

Forget the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Winks, both of whom had difficult times last season. The change of manager might help those two a bit but Fonseca’s use of a 3-5-2 system, if he decided to go with it at Spurs, means that Doherty could be the one to benefit most from his appointment.

AND in other news, Imagine him and Hojbjerg: Paratici must secure £36m-rated beast dubbed “clever” by Fonseca…
