Essex wait on floodplain meeting

Essex have been granted conditional planning approval for the redevelopment of the County Ground

Cricinfo staff03-Oct-2008Essex have been granted conditional planning approval for the redevelopment of the County Ground, but it won’t be completely signed off until issues surrounding the floodplain around the ground are sorted.”This is a huge step forward as it confirms the council commitment to the project going ahead,” said chief executive David East. “The power to grant permission has been delegated to the director of planning and the application will not need to revert back to the planning committee provided these outstanding matters can be resolved to his satisfaction.”East added that he doesn’t believe that the floodplain issue will cause any major problems and the club are organising a meeting with the Environment Agency to deal with the matter.

Hutton concerned over Newcastle transfers

Alan Hutton has shared his concern with Newcastle United and their transfer business so far.

The Lowdown: No more signings?

As per Luke Edwards, it is ‘unlikely’ that the St. James’ Park faithful will make any more signings before the summer window ends, with Joe Willock being their only permanent addition from Arsenal so far.

The Daily Telegraph journalist explains that someone from the 25-man squad would have to drop out first of all, and they have spent their entire budget on bringing the central midfield player in.

However, he did not rule out the ‘possibility’ that somebody could yet come to the North East on a loan deal.

The Latest: Hutton concern

Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has voiced his concern with the Tyneside club’s transfer business so far, but thinks that they will survive relegation down to the EFL Championship:

“I still think Newcastle have a decent squad.

“But they haven’t added to it and that is a big problem.

“You can never stand still. If you look at all the clubs who are out there spending money year on year, even during the pandemic.

“The worrying thing about it is the results. Two games, two defeats and conceding a lot of goals.

“You always have to be on the front foot and looking to the future.

“I love Steve Bruce to bits; he gets a hard time up there, but it won’t get any better for him if results don’t improve.

“Fans want to see signings and progression, but it just hasn’t happened.

“I think they’ll survive easily enough but to progress, they just need more in the transfer market.”

The Verdict: Worrying

As Hutton points out, it is certainly worrying for Steve Bruce’s team that they have not brought in more players to help out the squad, especially given the start that they have made to the 2021/22 season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They may not be as lucky to survive in this campaign if more additions are not brought in, and so the next few days are vital for them.

Nonetheless, time is running out, and more clubs will be reluctant to let players go so late on in the window with them looking to finalise their own squads ahead of the deadline.

Laxman puts India in total control

VVS Laxman tormented Australia with his second Test double-century and Gautam Gambhir registered his first as India batted themselves into an almost unconquerable position in the third Test

VVS Laxman tormented Australia with his second Test double-century and Gautam Gambhir registered his first as India batted themselves into an almost unconquerable position in the third Test. On the second successive day of complete Indian domination, Australia’s greatest achievement was simply getting to stumps without losing a wicket. But Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich were given a preview of the challenge that awaits them as the legspinners Amit Mishra and Anil Kumble spun a few deliveries viciously out of the footmarks that Australia’s bowlers had created over nearly 12 hours in the field. The openers batted out 15 overs after Kumble delayed his declaration to allow Laxman to reach 200.As soon as the milestone came with a lofted on-drive off Michael Clarke, India’s batsmen were called in. They had done their job. If the first day did not consign Australia to an unwinnable position, the second day must surely have managed it. Gambhir and Laxman compiled a mammoth 278-run partnership that left Australia tired, frustrated and wicketless for nearly three sessions. In spite of Gambhir’s achievement at his home ground, the day belonged to Laxman. His list of achievements was impressive: he went past 2000 Test runs against Australia; he recorded his sixth Test century against them; and he turned it into his second highest Test score, behind his 2000-01 effort of 281 at Eden Gardens, an innings that still gives a few Australians sleepless nights. If ever there was proof of his love of this opposition it’s his list of top Test innings – his best four are all against Australia.Laxman began the day in ominous touch and pulled brilliantly when Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson dropped short. He stalled for a while on 99 before driving Cameron White comfortably through cover for four and went on to cause problems for all the bowlers. The Australians helped him by regularly straying onto his pads and it was like handing Cookie Monster control of the Arnott’s factory. At one stage Ricky Ponting even effectively relocated the slips cordon to short midwicket to handle the situation. It was reminiscent of the old Test Match board game where children carefully place their little plastic fielders in unorthodox positions to deal with the predictability of the restrictive batting mechanism.Ponting lined up his three catching men – a misnomer as they weren’t offered any catches – on the leg-side but Laxman still found the spaces with casual flicks and well-timed drives. And unlike the Test Match batsman there is nothing restrictive about Laxman’s technique, so he also took the opportunity to glide easy runs through the vacant slip region. He left some of his most flabbergasting shots until late in the day. Can anyone truly explain how he turned a Johnson delivery that was angled across him and was well outside off stump into an on-drive for four? And yet he did it so effortlessly that viewers could not help but assume that was the most logical stroke for that delivery.Smart StatsGautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman’s stand of 278 is the second-highest fourth-wicket partnership for India against Australia, and India’s third-highest for the fourth wicket against all teams.Laxman became the second Indian, and the 17th player overall, to score 2000 runs against Australia.Gambhir’s score of 206 is the highest by an Indian left-hand batsman against Australia, and also the highest for a left-hand opener against them.Laxman featured in a partnership of 200 or more against Australia for the fourth time in his career, the most by any player. Brian Lara, Richie Richardson, and David Gower have each featured thrice in double-century partnerships against Australia. This is the first time that Indian batsmen have scored two double-centuries in an innings. It is also the first time such a feat has been achieved by any team against Australia. A team innings has included two double centuries on 14 occasions, with Grame Smith’s 232 and Neil McKenzie’s 226, against Bangladesh in February 2008, being the latest such instance Laxman scored at a rate of over four an over against each of Australia’s pace bowlers, except Stuart Clark. Mitchell Johnson conceded 47 off 52 balls while Brett Lee gave away 38 from 54. Shane Watson went for 27 off 35, but Clark was by far the most economical, conceding just 17 in 51 balls at a rate of 2.11.In Laxman’s company, Gambhir was as anonymous as one can be in reaching 200. He played some impressive shots of his own; he clubbed White contemptuously through midwicket and when things became so desperate for Australia that Ricky Ponting bowled for the first time since 2005-06, Gambhir pulled his slow-medium bouncer easily over the infield for four. When Gambhir got his double-century with a clip off his hips from Lee, his celebrations were relatively muted. There was a raise of the bat and a handshake from a smiling and admiring Lee, but Gambhir was clearly exhausted. The proof came when he wearily played on to Shane Watson on 206. It was Australia’s first success since Sachin Tendulkar departed just before tea on the first day.By the time Gambhir went, India were 435 for 4. It was all rather academic after that. Laxman kept scoring, the lower order gave him impressive support and Australia kept toiling without much hope of achieving anything of real value. But a few things were confirmed in the period that followed, namely that Katich should bowl more often, Johnson is a tireless worker and Brad Haddin is struggling with such long and hot days behind the stumps. It has been a tough tour for Haddin, who has had to deal with unfamiliar pace and bounce while trying to maintain his concentration. His worst moment came when Laxman, on 134, got a thick edge off Watson. The ball flew between the wicketkeeper and first slip but it was so close to Haddin that he would not have needed to dive; as it was, he didn’t even move.Haddin did grasp a second, almost identical chance soon after to remove Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had been briefly entertaining in smashing 27. The reflexes of Katich were sharper. Dhoni pulled violently back at head height towards the bowler Katich, who somehow got his left hand to the ball and simultaneously dropped an almost impossible chance while saving the umpire Aleem Dar from losing a few teeth.Had Katich pinched the chance it would have been two wickets in two overs after he removed Sourav Ganguly for 5. It was strange that Ponting had not asked Katich, a left-arm wrist-spinner, to bowl to Ganguly earlier in the series. The similarly-styled Brad Hogg removed Ganguly four times in last season’s Tests and Katich duly continued the trend, drawing Ganguly into a drive to Ponting at cover.Katich, White, Clarke and Ponting all bowled spells that helped relieve the fast men, who couldn’t find much movement and were often given depressingly defensive fields. But Johnson showed heart and was still firing in short and fast stuff late in the day. He was rewarded with an lbw decision against Kumble (45) and finished with 3 for 142.The very fact that Johnson’s figures were considered reasonable highlighted just how much India dominated the first two days. The first belonged to Gambhir, the second to Laxman – for Australia to rescue the match, the third day must be emphatically claimed by one of their top six.

West Brom look to offload Kenneth Zohore

West Bromwich Albion are hoping to seal Kenneth Zohore’s departure from The Hawthorns before the end of the day.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Birmingham Live, who claim that Valerien Ismael has given the green light for Albion to sanction the departure of the 27-year-old centre-forward, with the Frenchman potentially looking to create space in his first-team squad in order to make a last-minute move for a target of his own.

Further reports have also revealed Albion’s plans to offload the Denmark international prior to the closure of the summer transfer window on Tuesday evening, with the Baggies having failed in their attempt to land the former Watford centre-forward Troy Deeney, who ultimately sealed a move to Birmingham City – something which would suggest the 45-year-old Baggies boss is indeed keen to bring in further attacking reinforcements.

Fans will be buzzing

Having made an £8.01m move from Cardiff City to West Brom back in the summer of 2019, it would be fair to say that Zohore has not exactly lived up to his price tag during his spell at The Hawthorns.

Indeed, over his 17 Championship appearances in his first season at the club, the £1.8m-rated man scored just three goals, provided his teammates with no assists and missed four big chances for his side.

These returns saw the 27-year-old earn a disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.67, ranking him as Albion’s fourth-worst performer in the second tier of English football that season.

Things did not get any better for the £16.5k-per-week forward last term, when, after being loaned out to Millwall, Zohore managed a mere two goals, registered no assists and missed three big chances over his 17 Championship appearances for the Lions.

These metrics saw the striker average an even more disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.65, ranking him as Millwall’s joint sixth-worst player in the league.

As such, it would indeed appear as if it is the right call to try and move Zohore on prior to Tuesday’s deadline, as the former ACF Fiorentina forward does not appear good enough to play a regular role in a promotion-chasing Albion side, with the news that Ismael is hoping to sanction the 27-year-old’s sale before the end of the day sure to have fans of the club buzzing.

Ciaran Dickson scores for Celtic B

Ciaran Dickson appears to have completed a move to Celtic after turning out for the Hoops’ B team against Morton on Saturday, as per The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Dickson was pictured with a Celtic shirt recently

Dickson, who was described as ‘terrific’ by Steven Gerrard last season, was a surprise release at Ibrox in the summer.

The 19-year-old only signed a new deal with Rangers back in January but was let go at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

The midfielder was pictured holding up a Celtic shirt last week, leading to rumours of a cross-Glasgow switch materialising.

The Latest: Debut goal for Dickson

Dickson actually turned out for Celtic against Morton in the SPFL Trust Trophy on Saturday, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

Wearing the number 10 jersey, he scored on his debut after 30 minutes to halve a 2-0 deficit for his team.

Celtic went on to lose 3-1, but it seems as if Dominic McKay may have sealed an under-the-radar addition to the club’s youth ranks in Dickson, with a tweet from the club’s B team account labelling the 19-year-old as a new signing.

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Dickson is a player who clearly caught the eye of Gerrard last season and was of interest to Premier League side Burnley, so a cut-price move to Celtic Park seems to be a smart piece of business from McKay.

The Hoops appears to be building for the future with the signings of youngsters Liel Abada, Liam Shaw, Liam Scales, Osaze Urhoghide and Joey Dawson, and it looks as if Dickson can now be added to that list judging by his B team appearances over the weekend.

Sachin Tendulkar has been rested for the first three ODIs of the seven-match series against England which begins on November 14 in Rajkot. Yusuf Pathan makes his return to the ODI squad as Praveen Kumar, Parthiv Patel and Irfan Pathan are the absentees from the team that played in the last ODI series against Sri Lanka.Tendulkar had requested that he be rested, citing the heavy workload as the reason, and the selectors kept that in mind when they met in Nagpur on Wednesday evening to pick the team. He was expected to play this series after last featuring in the CB series in Australia back in April. A groin injury picked up during the tournament kept him away from the Kitply Cup held in Dhaka and the Asia Cup in Pakistan that followed. The surprise inclusion in the 15-man squad is M Vijay who has been named in place of S Badrinath. Vijay was a eleventh-hour addition to the squad for the final Test against Australia on Tuesday evening as cover for the banned Gautam Gambhir after his impressive performances this season.A tall, solid opening batsman, Vijay was an instant success in his debut Ranji season, finishing as the third-highest run-getter with 628 runs in seven games at a 50-plus average. He was India A’s leading scorer in a two-Test series against New Zealand A, the second-highest run-getter in the recently-concluded Challenger Trophy while turning out for India Red. He also scored 243 in Tamil Nadu’s opening Ranji fixture against Maharashtra, before he earned his maiden Test call-up.Badrinath, a late inclusion himself on the tour to Sri Lanka in August after Tendulkar was ruled out of the five-match ODI series, made his debut in the second match in Dambulla. An unbeaten 27, which took to India to victory, was followed by two disappointing and identical scores of 6 in the next two matches. He also captained India Red during the Challenger Trophy scoring 93 in the three games at 31.00.The other changes to the previous squad are Virender Sehwag, who missed the ODIs in Sri Lanka because of an ankle injury, and Ishant Sharma, who was rested from the series in Sri Lanka.India Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, RP Singh, Virat Kohli, M Vijay

Cortez faz no fim, Grêmio vence o Bahia e cola no líder Corinthians

E o Grêmio sentiu a pressão.
