West Ham battle Newcastle for Antonin Barak

West Ham are battling Newcastle United in the race to sign Udinese’s Antonin Barak.

What’s the story?

According to reports over the summer from Corriere di Verona (print edition, 06/2021, page 14), Hammers boss David Moyes was weighing up a potential swoop for the midfielder.

Gazzetta dello Sport have now claimed (via Sport Witness) that the Irons remain in the mix for Barak and that they continue to follow him closely.

The report added that Serie A duo Inter and AC Milan are also in the race, although Udinese are not keen on letting him go this month.

Imagine him and Rice

While Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek have become the cornerstones of West Ham’s midfield, Moyes could look to partner Barak with the Englishman.

The Udinese ace has already earned some rave reviews for his performances, not least with Czech Republic legend Pavel Nedved, who said: “If we talk about Czech talents, we do not have to try a lot. Udinese has Barak and Jankto, two I like. They are doing well, but I think they can play at a higher level.”

Meanwhile, a player profile done by Dalian Wanda said of him: “Towering at 1.90m, Antonin Barak is a central midfielder who is great in air, also comfortable enough to put the ball on the floor and play, not afraid to let fly from distance either! He’s the engine room for this Czech team.”

Barak also achieved history a couple of seasons ago by becoming only the second foreign player to score three goals in the first seven games in Serie A for Hellas Verona, after Preben Elkjær Larsen in 1987/88.

The Czech ace has scored more goals and provided more assists than Soucek this season, while he also boasts far more shots, key passes and dribbles per game – a real indication of the greater attacking threat that he brings to the table in comparison to his fellow countryman at the London Stadium.

The 6 foot 3 beast could be another player to establish a formidable partnership with Rice in the engine room for West Ham.

Meanwhile, Moyes is now keen on signing this Premier League star…

Umpire Benson confirms retirement

The English umpire, Mark Benson, has confirmed his retirement from the ICC elite panel, and will see out his career on the county circuit

Mark Benson endured a stressful time during the second Test at Adelaide in December•AFP

The English umpire, Mark Benson, has confirmed his retirement from the ICC elite panel, and will see out his career on the county circuit, following his sudden withdrawal from the Adelaide Test between Australia and West Indies in December.Benson hit the headlines on the opening day of the second Test on December 4, when he was reported to be upset over several incidents involving the Umpire Decision Review System, one of which led to his original decision against Shivnarine Chanderpaul being overturned. He withdrew from the contest and flew back to England while the match was still taking place, although the ICC later claimed his withdrawal had been on the grounds of ill-health.”I have enjoyed my time on the elite panel immensely,” said Benson in an ICC statement on Friday. “The opportunity to be part of the global game has given me memories that I will always treasure. But travel and being away from home takes its toll on the family and some warning bells have started to ring regarding my health.”So, having thought about it carefully, I feel now is the right time for me to step down and move to a more settled and familiar environment in England.”Although Benson’s contract was not due to expire until the end of June 2010, he asked if he could be released from it three months early so he could take up a contract with the ECB and this request was granted.”I’d like to thank the ICC and my umpiring colleagues on the elite panel for their support over the years,” added Benson. “Umpiring at the top level has been a very rewarding experience for me and it is not an easy decision to walk away from it but I believe it is the right one as far as my health and family are concerned.Vince van der Bijl, the ICC’s umpires’ and referees’ manager said: “Mark’s immense love for and enjoyment of cricket shines through his umpiring. His on-field calm demeanour will be missed, as will his friendly and easygoing disposition.”We fully understand and support his decision, which was brought on by a desire to spend more time in England with his family and some concerns about health issues. He will add richly to the county circuit as he is a talented and hugely experienced umpire and we wish him great success.”In total, Benson umpired 27 Tests, 72 ODIs and 19 T20Is, including the final of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 final in Johannesburg in September 2007. He had been on the elite panel since 2006 and was offered a contract by the ECB to return to domestic cricket as a first-class umpire.

Punjab plagued by fitness worries

Cricinfo previews Kings XI Punjab ahead of IPL 2010

Brett Lee and Irfan Pathan are doubtful starters for the opening games•Associated Press

One of the major concerns for Kings XI Punjab ahead of the third season of the IPL is a long injury list. The IPL begins on March 12 and Punjab play their first two games on March 13 and 16, but they are likely to field XIs that may not include a few first-choice players. Sample the injury concerns: Shaun Marsh, Punjab’s success story of 2008, looks unlikely to be fit for the start. Their most expensive overseas player, fast bowler Brett Lee, is also beset with fitness problems. Irfan Pathan seems likely to miss the first few matches and Yuvraj Singh, Punjab’s highest run scorer in 2009, has only recently begun batting after his latest injury. It is hardly an enviable position for their new captain Kumar Sangakkara, and key to Punjab even nearing the semi-finals this year will be having the entire squad fit and available for the tournament.Punjab were one of the best teams in the inaugural IPL, cruising into the semi-finals, but had a tough time in the second season, affected by the injuries to fast bowlers Sreesanth and Jerome Taylor, and the unavailability of Australian players for much of the competition. Punjab’s Indian bowlers had done the trick in 2008 but found it tough in South Africa the following season, and their team could suffer if that is the case as the bandwagon moves back to India. The buzzLalit Modi, the league’s commissioner, and Yuvraj have been busy providing updates on Twitter. Modi had assured that Ravi Bopara and Lee would tour, despite the security concerns, while Yuvraj kept his followers informed about his fitness.New facesPunjab have signed up four domestic players – the medium-pacers Love Ablish and Shalabh Srivastava, batsman Manvinder Bisla and allrounder Reetinder Sodhi. Sodhi, who played 18 ODIs for India, and Srivastava, a left-arm pacer, were recently admitted back into the domestic fold after they severed ties with the unofficial ICL. Ablish, who plays for Punjab on the domestic circuit, was the third highest wicket-taker in this season’s Ranji Trophy Super League. Bisla, the Haryana-born wicketkeeper who plays for Jammu & Kashmir, was part of IPL champions Deccan Chargers’ squad in 2009. Mohammad Kaif, the only Indian up for auction this year, went unsold in the first round of bidding but was later signed up by Punjab for $250,000.Watch out forWith so many key players not certain to play, No’s 3 and 4, the Sri Lankan pair of Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, will assume plenty of significance. Sangakkara was the team’s second highest run-scorer in South Africa with 332 runs at 30.18, with two half-centuries, while Jayawardene proved of immense value in a couple of extremely tight chases. Jayawardene doesn’t seem a Twenty20 prototype but can clear the boundary with wristy elegance. In the domestic Twenty20 tournament at home, he opened the batting for Wayamba and even scored 91 off 49 balls in the final. Sangakkara has of late evolved into a fabulous Twenty20 player. This pair will be expected to shoulder much of the batting in 2010. Missing in actionMarsh, Punjab’s standout performer in the first IPL season, became the latest worry after he was ruled out of Australia’s ODIs against New Zealand due to a back problem. Lee has arrived in India and has been bowling brief spells in the nets and a final call will be taken on March 11. Pathan, who missed the one-day Vijay Hazare Trophy due to a back strain, expects to recover in time to play but he may miss a few of Punjab’s initial matches. Yuvraj is confident of being fit by the second match at the latest.X factorPunjab, especially given Pathan’s fitness concern, desperately need an allrounder to be counted and primed for that scenario is Sodhi. Once tipped – like many other ill-fated domestic players who could bat and bowl a bit – as India’s answer to the massive void left by Kapil Dev’s retirement, Sodhi never made the grade and until last year was plying his trade in the unofficial ICL. But now that he’s back in the fold after severing ties with the IPL, Sodhi has a contract with Punjab and should get an opportunity to show what he’s got left in the tank. He’s only 29 and a handy Twenty20 player, so this could yet be a defining chapter in the story of another talent gone astray.StrengthSpin. Piyush Chawla did very well in the first IPL, prompting Sangakkara to hail him as one to watch out for, and Ramesh Powar is also a handy bowler to have in the squad. Chawla was less successful in South Africa, taking just 12 wickets, but wasn’t a bowler that opposing teams could take for easy runs. Back in familiar conditions, he will be a real focal point for Punjab. Powar has moved far behind Chawla in the list of India hopefuls, but should be confident of decent playing opportunities. One of the few offspinners who still rely on a lack of pace to fox batsmen in today’s game, Powar can be a treat to watch in limited-overs cricket when on top of his game. Both spinners are useful lower-order batsmen.WeaknessBesides fitness issues, the lack of quality in the Indian batting back-up for Yuvraj is another of Punjab’s drawbacks, which makes it vital that Pathan recovers from the back injury that has kept him out of the preliminary squad of the ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean. Top-order domestic players like Karan Goel and Tanmay Srivastava need to make an impact if Punjab are to become a genuine title contender.IPL 2009 – the key figures:Final position: Fifth place
Top scorer: Yuvraj Singh with 340 runs at 36.50
Top wicket-taker: Irfan Pathan with 17 wickets at 22.94 and economy rate of 7.74
Best result: Seven-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore
Worst result: Ten-wicket loss to Delhi
Highest team score: 158 v Kolkata Knight Riders
Lowest team score: 104 for 7 v DelhiPrediction for 2010It depends on which Punjab turns up. Playing at home will help but they need their bowlers firing to trouble the big teams. In 2009 they fought bravely in close encounters but there’s a feeling that Punjab lack the killer punch needed to floor the heavyweights. The odds are stacked against Punjab reaching the semi-finals.

West Ham eye "phenomenon" Boubacar Kamara

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Boubacar Kamara to the London Stadium.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who claim that both West Ham and Newcastle United are leading the race to sign the Olympique Marseille defensive midfielder on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign, while AS Roma are also credited with an interest in the 22-year-old.

However, the report goes on to state that the France U21 international is extremely well-liked by a number of other Premier League sides due to his positional versatility and ability on the ball, meaning that, despite currently being in pole position, the Hammers and the Magpies will still have a battle on their hands to land Kamara’s signature this summer.

Imagine him and Rice

Considering the sheer amount of potential Kamara quite clearly possesses, it is easy to understand why David Moyes is believed to be interested in a move for the midfielder, as the prospect of the 22-year-old lining up alongside Declan Rice in the middle of the park at the London Stadium will have Premier League central midfielders up and down the country terrified.

Indeed, the £22.5m-rated man has become a mainstay in the Marseille side since 144 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, despite having only turned 22 last November.

However, it is not only the number of the £46k-per-week midfielder’s appearances that is impressive, but also his level of performance in them, with the player who Rolando dubbed a “phenomenon” having averaged a SofaScore match rating of 7.00 or above in each of the last three seasons.

As such, should West Ham be able to secure a deal for the French youth international next summer, especially on a free transfer, it would undoubtedly be a major coup for the Champions League hopefuls, as a midfield duo of Rice and Kamara is certainly a very scary prospect.

West Ham make formal Gabriel Barbosa bid

As per a source close to Flamengo forward Gabriel Barbosa, speaking in an interview with Globo Esporte, there has been more news involving West Ham United and the player.

The Lowdown: West Ham enter talks…

The 25-year-old is a name we keep hearing through the press as David Moyes aims to bolster his attacking options before the January 31 deadline.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sky Sports first broke news of West Ham’s interest in Barbosa as they went on to lift the lid on talks and a loan-to-buy offer for him earlier this month.

Indeed, the Irons and recruitment chief Rob Newman lodged a proposal to take the striker on a temporary spell for 18 months with the option to make his stay permanent for €30m (£25m), according to Sky Sports.

Sharing an update, a source very close to Barbosa has now made a further admission.

The Latest: Agent confirms Barbosa offer…

Speaking to South American news outlet Globo Esporte, the former Inter Milan striker’s representative Junior Pedroso has claimed that West Ham have indeed tabled a formal offer to take Barbosa on loan.

First revealing an approach from Newcastle, Pedroso then went on to confirm West Ham’s involvement, saying: “The other club that actually went about with a formalization of a loan offer was West Ham. And then I didn’t even take that offer to Gabriel, I directed it to Flamengo , who gave a negative.

“Flamengo doesn’t see a loan as a possibility, even paying a fortune, and we wouldn’t consider a loan issue at the moment either.”

The Verdict: Time to move on…

The prolific forward has been nothing short of a revelation in Brazil, having scored a phenomenal 29 goals in all competitions throughout 2021, but he could be a gamble in the English top flight.

Barbosa’s only spell in Europe to date came at Inter, which was a regrettable one to say the least, so you can understand why Moyes and co want to test the waters with a loan deal before discussing any permanent move.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, West Ham are still interested in a loan deal for the ‘big name’ striker, as Graeme Bailey worded it. However, after this interview with his agent, it could be time for the Irons to move on to other targets.

Plays of the Day from the IPL game between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in Mohali

Jamie Alter at the PCA Stadium in Mohali24-Mar-2010

Munaf Patel delivered when quiet (file photo)•AFP

Hit me baby just one time
Free hits were made for Twenty20, but none of the offerings from Sreesanth were accepted by Rajasthan’s batsmen. Wayward in his bowling, Sreesanth sent down a no-ball on his very first delivery of the match but Naman Ojha was beaten on the free hit, which was a clever bouncer. Sreesanth’s second free-hit delivery was another short ball that cramped Faiz Fazal and yielded just a single. Two free hits for just one run. Talk about getting out of jail.Nothing like a decent start
It wasn’t massive, but Rajasthan’s top order at least got a start. Their opening stands in four previous matches were 0, 14, 27, and a 0. But Michael Lumb – after a first-ball duck in the previous match – was quickly into his stride and helped add 35 with Naman Ojha in 3.4 overs. Lumb went on to score the best contribution by a Rajasthan opener this season, a 30-ball 41, after which the No. 3 Fazal collected 45 cool runs. Not outstanding, but some of the cobwebs had been brushed away.Oh, brother
A few Indian newspapers had hyped up the rivalry between the Pathan brothers ahead of the clash of the basement teams. Round one went to Yusuf Pathan, and he had his sibling to thank. Off the fifth ball of the ninth over, Yusuf heaved at a slower ball from Shalabh Srivastava and top-edged it high into the sky. Irfan ran around from long-off, settled under the steepler, but dropped the catch.En Voges
For the second match running Adam Voges provided vital ballast to Rajasthan’s middle order. After 14 balls he had 29, a superb strike rate in Twenty20, and then allowed Fazal to take strike. Fazal reciprocated with a few lovely boundaries off the back foot, and after he departed for 45 Voges gave further evidence of how crucial a player he is. He steered the third-last ball expertly behind point for four, stole two off the next ball, scampered back to strike even as the non-striker was run out, and smashed the final ball over midwicket for four. The last over cost 13, Voges’ 45 came off 24 balls, and his efforts gave Rajasthan a good total to defend.Eyeball to eyeball
The IPL isn’t all fun and music and big hits. Two instances during the game showed that Twenty20 is serious business. Sreesanth started out erratically, but when he dismissed Ojha for 13 he gave the batsmen a proper send-off, walking down the track and glaring at the batsmen ever after he’d left the middle. Then, during Punjab’s chase, Munaf Patel began a glaring contest with Ravi Bopara, who is never one to back away. Bopara had collected a pair of triples during Munaf’s second over, which cost 15, and the bowler didn’t like it one bit. What began as a customary mumble in frustration, with Munaf continuing the eyeball confrontation to Bopara, ended with Munaf being told to go play in traffic – well, you know what I mean – as he loped off into the outfield.Munaf dismantled
Munaf’s third over confirmed the direction his career has taken. After trying to dismiss Bopara with his chatter after an expensive second over, Munaf was taken to the cleaners in his third by Manvinder Bisla. His definition of a sighter was a slogged four which sent the ball flying over midwicket for four, the next ball was clubbed for six, and that was followed by two more fours as Munaf’s figures took a beating.Actions speak louder than words
When Munaf came back to bowl his final over, the 13th of Punjab’s innings, his captain had put a lot of faith in him. This time he silenced himself and delivered. A clever slower ball got Bopara chipping to mid-on and the second produced a loose shot from Mahela Jayawardene. It was lobbed back over Munaf toward Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, who charged in and hit the stumps with a direct hit to run out Irfan. Thankfully for Rajasthan, Munaf had let the ball do the talking.Value for money
Can you ever keep Yusuf Pathan out of the game? It was another disappointing outing with the bat, but when Shane Warne tossed Yusuf the ball for the 15th over he struck and added another in his second over. Yusuf has been able to spin the ball and restrict the batsmen with disciplined control, ultimately curbing the scoring by picking wickets. What he may be failing to deliver with the bat, he’s making up for with the ball.
