ScorecardHaving shared two tense contests one apiece England and Sri Lanka’s Under-19s teams could not beat the foul weather at Arundel as rain allowed just 11.4 overs of play in the third ODI. After a delayed start England stuck Sri Lanka in and got off to a good start when Lewis Gregory removed Ramith Rambukwella for 1 but a 50-run stand between Rumesh Buddika and Bhanuka Rajapaksa ensured no further alarms until rain had its final say.The teams have two more matches in their series with next game scheduled for Canterbury on August 12.

Spurs bid expected for Singo

As per Italian newspaper Tuttosport, via Sport Witness, a fresh Tottenham Hotspur bid is now expected as news emerges on in-form Torino ace Wilfried Singo.

The Lowdown: Conte gifts green-light…

Reports out of the continent indicate that Spurs head coach Antonio Conte is a personal admirer of the Ivory Coast international amid his search for more options on the right.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, another recent claim by Tuttosport (via SW) at the end of March lifted the lid on Conte’s eagerness to sign Singo for Spurs.

The 52-year-old, as per their information, ‘wants him at Tottenham’ as Spurs’ head coach seemingly gives his green-light for the Lilywhites to target him.

Sharing an update on the situation, Tutto now come back with a development this week.

The Latest: Tottenham bid expected…

According to the Italian source, again shared by SW, Spurs chief Fabio Paratici has been attempting to open discussions in the last few days as he eyes transfer talks.

The report goes on to add that an offer to sign Singo this summer is now expected as an interesting update comes to light on Conte’s personal target.

The Verdict: Right man?

Singo, who has been in brilliant form for Torino this season, could come as a shrewd option for Spurs given his young age (21) and obvious attacking threat.

According to WhoScored, he’s registered the joint-most assists for his club in Serie A this season whilst also clinching the joint-most Man of the Match awards alongside in-demand central defensive teammate Gleison Bremer.

He also ranks in as Torino’s third-best performer going by average match rating (6.84), and depending on the price they’re willing to negotiate, Singo could be a brilliant outside contender to help strengthen Conte’s options out wide.

Aston Villa: Pete O’Rourke makes attacking target claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed Aston Villa will have to pay a lot of money for Newcastle United’s Allan Saint-Maximin and PSV’s Noni Madueke, GiveMeSport report.

The Lowdown: Villa Park rumours

NSWE look set to back Steven Gerrard ahead of his first full season in charge at Villa Park, with reports suggesting the club are willing to spend over £150m.

Villa are expected to break their club record once again and have been name-checked with an interest in Saint-Maximin, with Newcastle prepared to sell for around £50m.

Madueke was reportedly watched by Gerrard against Leicester City last week, and O’Rourke has had his say on the two talented attackers potentially moving to the Midlands.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Talking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke labelled Saint-Maximin and Madueke as ‘two big targets’, adding that they ‘would cost a lot of money’.

“Madueke and Saint-Maximin are obviously two very talented players.

“Obviously, Steven Gerrard is looking to improve this Aston Villa side right now as well, like we saw in the January transfer window.

“They are two big targets for Aston Villa and either one of them would cost a lot of money.”

The Verdict: Attacking reinforcements needed?

Gerrard has mainly used a narrow 4-3-1-2 system in 2022, so it is interesting to see that two natural wide forwards have been linked with a move to Villa Park in recent weeks.

That could mean that Gerrard wants to alter his system over the summer and doesn’t rate Anwar El Ghazi, Bertrand Traore and Trezeguet, who are all thought to be set to be up for sale in the summer.

Danny Ings is another attacking player who could move on over the coming months, so it does look as if attacking reinforcements will be needed both centrally and out wide.

Middlesex frustrated by Derby washout

Derbyshire’s chances of hauling themselves off the bottom of the County Championship were hit by heavy rain which washed out the second day of the match against Middlesex at Derby

26-Aug-2010
ScorecardDerbyshire’s chances of hauling themselves off the bottom of the County Championship were hit by heavy rain which washed out the second day of the match against Middlesex at Derby. No play was possible before lunch after overnight rain and further showers during the morning left the County Ground outfield saturated.Umpires Neil Mallender and Stephen Gale decided there was no chance of conditions improving enough for the game to start and made the inevitable decision following an inspection at 1.30pm.It means four sessions have now been lost after rain halted play on the opening day three overs before the scheduled team interval.Although the forecast is better for the next two days, it looks unlikely that Derbyshire will have enough time to force the win they need to close the gap on Surrey, who are one place above them at the foot of Division Two.Middlesex are in a decent position on 228 for three with opener Scott Newman unbeaten on 119, his second Championship century of the season, but the chances of them being able to put Derbyshire under enough pressure to claim victory already appear slim.

Everton could sell one of key duo

Everton have been rather active in the transfer window over the past few years when it comes to bringing new players to the Merseyside club.

At times, the Toffees have spent significant sums of money on players such as Ben Godfrey, Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean to name a few.

The previous summer transfer window was a different story for the club as they were impacted by Financial Fair Play rules, resulting in them only signing Demarai Gray for a relatively low fee of £1.7m.

Looking ahead to the next summer window, it seems as though the Goodison Park outfit may once again be in danger of being troubled by their financial issues, this time in a much more potentially damaging regard.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Paul Brown had this to say about the future of Everton duo Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

He said: “It’s inevitable that one of them goes because the financial position the club finds itself in is so dire that they know they have to sell someone to generate some revenue.”

Bad news for Lampard

Having scored a combined total of nine Premier League goals between them this season, it’s safe to say that the duo are two of Everton’s key attacking figures.

The attackers also make up two of Everton’ three highest-rated outfield players currently at the club in terms of their overall performances according to WhoScored.

Also, with the pair being worth a combined fee of £82.8m, they are the club’s two most valuable players, showing why Brown thinks selling one of them could help the Toffees financially.

However, given how vital they both are on the pitch for the Merseyside club, selling either of them anytime soon would be a disaster for Frank Lampard and the fans.

While this could be an issue for the Toffees by the time the upcoming summer transfer window opens for business, their main concern at the moment will surely be on doing all they can to stay in the division.

Moving forward, the best thing that Everton can do is to win as many points as they can from their remaining league games.

Once they potentially manage to do that, the focus can then shift onto their summer business.

In terms of what the financial situation at the Merseyside club will look like at that point, it should be their top priority to keep hold of both Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin.

Pakistan was aware of suspensions – Lorgat

Pakistan’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom has said that the ICC was “playing to the public gallery” when it provisionally suspended the three players linked to the spot-fixing scandal

The provisional suspension of three Pakistani players under the ACSU code of conduct on Thursday has sparked off a war of words between the ICC and Pakistan’s top diplomat in the UK. Reacting to the suspensions, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Pakistan’s high commissioner to the UK, claimed that the ICC had made a mistake and that the governing body was “playing to the public gallery.”Speaking to the BBC, Hasan said that the ICC had “no business taking this action.” Instead, he claimed that cricket’s governing body had, “made an assurance to us when it said it would wait until Scotland Yard’s investigations were over.”Haroon Lorgat, the ICC’s chief executive, rejected the claim on Friday morning, telling Cricinfo that he had informed Hasan and the PCB that notices would be served to Pakistan captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.”I went yesterday [Thursday] later in the afternoon as a matter of courtesy and met with the High Commissioner and Ijaz [Butt, PCB chairman] and explained to them we will be serving the notice by the end of the evening if we are completed with our work, which we did,” Lorgat said.”I obviously couldn’t give all of the details due to matters of confidentiality, but they were aware we were busy with our investigations and we were close to conclusion, and that were likely to serve notice by the end of last night.”Lorgat said that the ICC had not suspended the players without the PCB’s knowledge. “I didn’t do it without his [Ijaz Butt’s] permission. I spoke to Mr Butt on the telephone before going public. He said he is fine. In fact, I asked him to join us when we served the notice. He said he was fine and he would send the Pakistan security manager.”The ICC’s move to suspend the three players came on the same day Pakistan announced that the players had opted to voluntarily withdraw from the forthcoming limited-overs series in England. Hasan’s remarks about the suspension, which reiterated his earlier belief that the players had been “set up”, are at the centre of what appears to be the Pakistan camp’s discontent with the suspension. Though Ijaz Butt remained silent on the matter – despite attempts to contact him – another official close to the investigation also questioned the development. The official said that no evidence had yet been shared with the PCB. “We’re very surprised the ICC has done this because to my knowledge there had been no indication of this,” the official said on Thursday night, after the suspensions were announced.”This is a bit inappropriate doing it now because the Scotland Yard investigations are ongoing and they could have waited till the end of that,” the official said. “What if they clear the players of any wrongdoing now?”Pakistan are thought to be unhappy at the number of investigations currently being carried out in the case. “The ICC and ACSU are doing their investigation and helping the police, Scotland Yard are carrying out their criminal investigation and the board is also doing its own internal inquiry,” the official said. “This can cause overlapping and confusion and it would’ve been better to let things happen one at a time.”
