Goa ride on Pinto's maiden century

Round-up of the first day of the third round of the Ranji Trophy Plate League

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Nov-2010Group AA combination of rain and bad light curtailed play on day one in five of the six third round Plate League matches. In the one match that did see a complete 90-over day’s play, Goa’s Reagan Pinto scored his maiden first-class century, taking his team to 315 for 4 against Jharkhand in Porvorim. Goa’s problem this season has been their first innings scores. They managed to draw both their first two matches, but conceded first-innings leads and as a consequence have just two points. Goa’s captain Sagun Kamat decided to bat first and would have feared another poor total after he was dismissed with the score on 4. Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan and Vaibhav Naik put on 87 for the second wicket to set a solid platform and then Pinto and Ajay Ratra capitalised. Ratra, whose 204 not out in Goa’s last match against Rajasthan took him to the top of this season’s run charts, got 54 off 62 balls, while Pinto hit 12 fours in his 105.Tripura crumbled to 122 for 6 as Hyderabad seamer Pagadala Naidu took 4 for 25 in his second first-class match. Play on day one at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad was reduced to 54 overs, but that was enough for the home team to take an advantage into day two. Tripura’s batting has really struggled this season: their highest score has been 255 and have been bowled out twice for less than a hundred. Things were no different on Wednesday as Naidu took three quick wickets to have Tripura wobbling at 42 for 3. Opener Rajib Saha waged a lone battle, getting 71, but wickets kept falling at the other end and when Saha fell to left-arm spinner Lalith Mohan, Tripura, who have no points so far this season, were staring at another batting failure.Only four overs were bowled at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur in the Group A top-of-the-table match between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, as rain washed out play. MP put Rajasthan – who have scored 400-plus totals in each of the two innings they have played this season -into bat and Akash Chopra and Vineet Saxena reached 4 for 0 before play was stopped. Madhya Pradesh have made just one change to the side that beat Goa in their last encounter, bringing in seamer Anand Rajan for Ishwar Pandey. Rajasthan offspinner Madhur Khatri and legspinner Vivek Yadav come in for their first game of the season, replacing left-arm spinner Gajendra Singh and seamer Raman Chahar.Group BKerala seamers Sony Cheruvathur and Prasanth Parameswaran struck three times each to reduce Vidarbha to 134 for 7 before bad light stopped play on day one in Malappuram. Vidarbha, who were bowled out for 61 in the second innings of their previous match against Maharashtra, continued to struggle with the bat and lost their first four wickets for 21, with Cheruvathur and Parameswaran taking two scalps each. Opener Akshay Kolhar held firm through the early collapse and got to his second half-century of the season, putting together a 67-run stand for the fifth wicket with Himanshu Joshi. The two then fell in the space of ten overs and Ranjit Paradkar fell to left-arm spinner Sreekumar Nair before the umpires called off play after 61 overs.Maharashtra’s batsmen were cooling their heels until tea, as rain delayed play in Visakhapatnam, but were then faced with a storm from the Andhra Pradesh bowlers to be reduced to 66 for 4 at the end of day one. Andhra’s leading wicket-taker this season, P Vijaykumar, dismissed Ameya Shrikhande in the second over of the match, and then seamer Gnaneswara Rao got Sangram Atitkar and Ankit Bawne out for ducks. Maharashtra still have their season’s leading run-getter Harshad Khadiwale at the wicket on 39 but need a recovery act tomorrow if they are to maintain their 100% winning record.Fading light was again a problem in the Group B bottom-of-the-table clash between Services and Jammu & Kashmir at the Harbax Singh Stadium in Delhi where just 43 overs of play was possible. Services ended the day at 119 for 2 after electing to bat. Tahir Khan’s first first-class innings for two years didn’t last long as he was out caught behind to Samiullah Beigh. J&K seamer Raman Dutta dismissed Sumit Singh before Jasvir Singh and Sarabjit Singh put up an unbeaten 50-run stand.

Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand got off to a poor start after they lost their twelve-a-side Twenty20 match to Auckland at Colin Maiden Park. The hosts won with 40 balls to spare, easily chasing down the target of 92 after Pakistan were bowled out in 17.4 overs.Pakistan were put in to bat and were in immediate trouble, sinking to 7 for 3 inside the third over. Left-arm seamer Michael Bates did the early damage, getting Mohammad Hafeez out caught and bowled off the fourth ball of the match. Two balls later he got Ahmed Shehzad to nick to Lou Vincent and be dismissed for a duck. In Bates’ next over he got rid of the big fish – the captain Shahid Afridi, for 1. Afridi tried to pull Bates, but only got it as far as square leg, where Anaru Kitchen took a sharp catch.Pakistan never recovered from that rocky start. Umar Akmal provided them with a silver lining, showing some signs of form to get to 25 – Pakistan’s top score of the innings. Left-arm spinner Roneel Hira dismissed Younis Khan for 18 and then Umar in his next over, and Fawad Alam was run out for 0 in between, to leave the visitors reeling at 52 for 6. Umar was trying to power Hira through the off side off the back foot, but missed the ball and was bowled. Abdul Razzaq wasn’t able to pull off a recovery and fell to offspinner Bhupinder Singh for 16. Bates came back into the attack and dismissed Wahab Riaz to finish with figures of 4 for 11 in three overs.Auckland opener Colin de Grandhomme was in a hurry to knock off the required runs and raced to 20 off 12 before he was caught at gully by Shehzad off Shoaib Akhtar. Martin Guptill, the only member of the Auckland side who is in New Zealand’s squad for the Twenty20 series against Pakistan, played the sheet-anchor role, and batted through the innings, making 28. Shoaib managed another wicket, bowling Lou Vincent, but was expensive, going at 7.75 in his four overs.Saeed Ajmal did a good job of drying up the runs, giving away 20 in his four overs, and picked up the wickets of Anaru Kitchen and Colin Munro. Gareth Hopkins, who was dropped from New Zealand’s squad for the Twenty20 and Test series against Pakistan, made only 8 before falling to Wahab Riaz. But Auckland were always comfortable, and reached their target with plenty of overs to spare, helped by the 17 extras conceded by Pakistan’s bowlers.Pakistan will have two days to recover before the first Twenty20 match of the three-match series against New Zealand, in Auckland, on December 26.

Bresnan bowls England within sight of victory

The fathers in England’s team know the excitement that Christmas Eve brought their children four nights ago, and they were feeling a similar anticipation on Tuesday evening after Tim Bresnan bowled them to within sight of an innings victory

The fathers in England’s team know the excitement that Christmas Eve brought their children four nights ago, and they were feeling a similar anticipation on Tuesday evening after Tim Bresnan bowled them to within sight of an innings victory. England can expect to retain the Ashes on Wednesday after another day of dominance over Australia, with only four wickets standing between the visitors and their goal.In fact, it’s probably only three wickets, as Ryan Harris is unlikely to bat, and will miss the Sydney Test having suffered a stress fracture in his left ankle while running in to bowl during the first session. The unheralded Bresnan ran through three of Australia’s best batsmen before Graeme Swann and James Anderson chipped in and by stumps, Australia were 6 for 169 with Brad Haddin on 11 and Mitchell Johnson on 6.The hosts needed something miraculous to save them after their first-innings capitulation for 98; what they couldn’t afford was for England to make 513. Jonathan Trott finished unbeaten on 168 as five wickets fell in the first session and Peter Siddle completed a six-wicket haul in front of his home crowd, but England had a lead of 415 and the Ashes were all but in the bag.Australia needed to bat for two days to save the game; they struggled to survive for even two sessions. Bresnan found swing and hit probing lines, Swann dried the runs up as Australia’s bowlers hadn’t managed to, and the batsmen simply couldn’t settle in for the kind of long innings that Trott and Alastair Cook have been so adept at in this series. And it all started with one bad decision from Shane Watson. Phillip Hughes and Watson began positively as the runs were ticking over at a decent rate during their opening stand, while England’s fast men struggled to find any early swing under a blue sky. But Hughes, desperate to prove he is one of Australia’s best two available openers, had little hope of making his ground when Watson pushed to cover and called him for a single.Trott’s throw to Matt Prior had Hughes short for 23 and Watson’s pained look said it all. It was a year ago, almost to the day, that at the same venue Watson was involved in another horrible mix-up with his opening partner, when he and Simon Katich finished up at the same end and TV replays were needed to confirm which of the men was gone. It’s clearly a weakness in his game, as is his failure to turn half-centuries into hundreds. After Watson went to tea on 50, having played some punchy drives straight and through cover, he came out following the break and inexplicably padded up to Bresnan and was lbw for 54, a wishful review not saving him from his poor judgment. In Watson’s past 11 innings he has been out for 56, 57, 51, 57 and 54. He’s becoming as synonymous with the fifties as James Dean.Watson’s dismissal came during an outstanding spell from Bresnan, who ended the day with 3 for 26 from 15 overs. The success of Bresnan and Chris Tremlett over the past two Tests has highlighted the depth in the England squad, which Australia haven’t been able to match. Paul Collingwood is the only man struggling for England, while Australia have several passengers.Smart Stats

Australia finished the day at 169 for 6, still 246 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat. Their worst defeat at home is the innings and 230 run defeat against England at Adelaide in 1892.

Peter Siddle’s 6 for 75 was his second six-wicket haul of the series. He has 73 wickets in 21 Tests with four five-wicket hauls.

England’s total of 513 was only the sixth occasion that they passed 500 at Melbourne. The previous occasion was in 1975 when they made 529.

Jonathan Trott’s 168 is the 41st instance of an England batsman scoring an unbeaten century in Tests against Australia. It is also the third time in 2010 that an England batsman has achieved this feat.

Mike Hussey fell for his ninth duck in Tests. All his ducks have come since 2008. On seven of the nine occasions, he has been out caught.

Ricky Ponting is one who hasn’t been pulling his weight with the bat, and the questions over his future will grow louder after he played on to Bresnan for 20. Ponting was a picture of concentration during his 73-ball innings, desperate to dig Australia out of their hole, but the pressure built by Bresnan and his colleagues was destined to lead to a wicket.Bresnan followed with the key dismissal of the in-form Michael Hussey, who drove on the up to short cover while trying to get off the mark, and the pressure was all on the vice-captain Michael Clarke. Again, though, England tied the Australians down with dot balls and Clarke, who had been lucky to escaped a missed stumping on 2, eventually edged Swann to second slip on 13 from 66 balls.Suddenly, England could dream of winning within three days, but Smith and Haddin showed a little bit of fight, although Smith had been dropped on 4 when he rashly hooked Bresnan to Tremlett at deep backward square leg. His luck ran out on 38 when he tried to pull Anderson and got a bottom edge on to his stumps.By that stage, Australia were still 257 runs from making England bat again, after Trott’s unbeaten 168 created a huge advantage for the visitors. Trott saw five wickets fall around him before lunch, as England added 69 to their overnight total to be dismissed for 513 a few minutes before the scheduled break, and it was Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus who did the damage.Siddle enjoyed a hometown six-wicket haul and he began the day by removing Prior, who was caught at mid-on by Ponting for 85, and then Bresnan was caught behind for 4 soon afterwards. Swann offered some support for Trott before he gave Hilfenhaus his first wicket of the match, caught behind for 22 when he toe-edged an attempted hook that was taken by a high-leaping Haddin. The job was finished rapidly a few minutes before the scheduled lunch break when Hilfenhaus bowled Tremlett for 4 and Siddle bowled Anderson for 1. Siddle finished with 6 for 75, which was his second six-wicket haul of the series following his strong opening-day efforts at the Gabba. Just like in that match, his efforts will be in vain.

Hopes carries Queensland to easy win

New South Wales Blues crumbled to an eight-wicket loss to Queensland Bulls in Sydney, failing in their bid to host the Big Bash preliminary final

New South Wales Blues crumbled to an eight-wicket loss to Queensland Bulls in Sydney, failing in their bid to host the Big Bash preliminary final. The Blues now have to travel to the Bellerive Oval to face Tasmania Tigers on Tuesday. The tone for the match was set off the very first ball when James Hopes bowled Usman Khawaja, the recent Test debutant, who chopped a pull back onto his stumps. After David Warner and Daniel Smith fell cheaply, it appeared that Phil Jaques and Moises Henriques were steadying the ship, before Luke Feldman ran Henriques out from the boundary, his direct hit catching the batsman just short.Ben Laughlin (3 for 25) and Chris Simpson (2 for 8) ripped through the hosts, with only Dominic Thornely offering any resistance in the lower order as the Blues stumbled to 120.Bulls never looked in any danger in the chase, Hopes (62 off 38) and Michael Lumb (40 off 26) taking to the Blues’ inexperienced bowling attack in the Powerplay that yielded 66. Hopes saw the visitors home with a massive 37 balls to spare. The preliminary final will be played on February 1 in Hobart between the Tigers and the Bulls, with the winner earning the right to face South Australia at the Adelaide Oval on February 5 in the final.
