Benjamin Cremaschi: Inter Miami wonderkid set for a tug-of-war between the USMNT & Lionel Messi's Argentina

The 18-year-old midfielder's rise has been rapid, and now his legendary team-mate could be a key figure in his international future

If you need any evidence to prove that things change quickly in this sport of ours, just look at Benjamin Cremaschi. There are few better examples of how unbelievably things can shift with a bunch of talent, a lot of hard work, a little bit of luck and, of course, the arrival of one GOAT.

Cremaschi, just 18 years old, entered this season as a potential star of the future. He'd carved out a path towards the first team with Inter Miami, establishing himself among the club's first wave of homegrown stars. And now, just a few months later, he finds himself playing next to his hero, Lionel Messi, as a key part of everything the Argentinian icon is doing to dazzle audiences in Florida.

Everyone involved with Inter Miami has seen their life change since Messi's arrival. Everything has gotten so much bigger and, more importantly, so much better. The club has been unstoppable since Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets arrived, elevating the level and profile of everyone around them.

That includes Cremaschi, who is no longer that potential future star. No, Cremaschi is making waves in the here and now, combining with his new superstar team-mates on multiple occasions throughout Miami's recent run.

The world is now taking notice of that fact, and not just on social media, where his follower count has skyrocketed thanks to all of these new pictures alongside Messi. These days, Cremaschi finds himself in the middle of a potential international tug-of-war, with Messi and Argentina on one side and the United States men's national team on the other.

The USMNT have made the first move, calling in Cremaschi for their upcoming friendlies against Uzbekistan and Oman, but this battle, like the young midfielder's rise, is just getting started.

  • Getty

    The rise

Born in Miami, Cremaschi is Inter Miami's first true homegrown star. He began playing soccer at the age of six and, at 14, moved to the Weston Academy, a program that also produced former USMNT and current Philadelphia Union midfielder Alejandro Bedoya. While there, Cremaschi helped Weston win the 2021 Under-16 MLS Next Cup, claiming the Golden Boot in the process.

In 2021, he signed with Miami, joining the club's youth program, but it didn't take him long to rise up the ranks. He debuted for Inter Miami II in the MLS Next Pro League in 2022, scoring five goals before signing his first professional contract in November.

Under now-former head coach Phil Neville, Cremaschi was handed his Inter Miami debut in February and, after a series of cameo appearances, earned his first start in April. In the months since, he hasn't looked back, becoming a regular at just 18 years old.

    Messi arrives

Like just about everyone else at Inter Miami, Cremaschi's life changed completely this summer. It's what happens when the GOAT arrives.

An Argentinian himself, and thus a long-time Messi fan, Cremaschi was certainly star-struck when the man himself became his new team-mate ahead of the Leagues Cup this summer. However, since Messi's arrival, Cremaschi has proven more than capable of playing alongside the ex-Barcelona man, and has emerged as an even more vital player for Inter Miami under Gerardo 'Tata' Matino.

With Messi's long-time team-mate Busquets, playing as the No.6, Cremaschi's energy has been vital for Miami, with the youngster asked to do a lot of running to make up for Busquets and Messi's aging legs.

It's not just energy that Cremaschi brings, though, as the teenage midfielder has also played a part in plenty of goals. His ability to get into the final third, and contribute once there, has been key for a Miami team that has seen contributions come from all over the field since Messi has arrived.

Cremaschi scored a vital goal in the Leagues Cup, helping lead Miami's comeback against FC Dallas that was ultimately capped off by a Messi free-kick. It was the ex-Barcelona man that stole the show, but Miami wouldn't have made it that far if not for the work done by Cremaschi earlier in the half.

Additionally, Cremaschi has shown a cool head in big moments, scoring the decisive penalty against FC Cincinnati in the U.S. Open Cup semi-finals after proving to be such a key figure in the team's Leagues Cup run.

The teenager has also provided four assists since Messi's arrival, with none more dazzling than his combination with his long-time idol in the recent win over the New York Red Bulls. Surrounded in the box by opposing defenders, Messi picked out the type of pass that only he can see, finding Cremaschi on the right side. Likely stunned to have even received the ball, Cremaschi made no mistake once he did get it, teeing up a wide-open Messi to cap an absurd sequence.

Plenty of players have benefitted from Messi's arrival. Robert Taylor has become a goal machine, while Leonardo Campana and Josef Martinez have both found their scoring boots. But it could be argued that Cremaschi is benefitting the most from being taken under Messi's wing so far in Miami and, even in Messi's shadow, the spotlight on the teenager has grown brighter and brighter.

  • Getty

    'Living the dream'

None of this is being lost on Cremaschi, who understands exactly how absurd his life has become this summer.

His father was a professional rugby player, representing Argentina at international level. And, like all Argentinians his age, Cremaschi was raised on Messi highlights and a seemingly endless supply of Messi goals. Now, instead of watching those goals on YouTube, he's helping to create them. Cremaschi, even after 11 games, is still stunned by it all.

“Messi tries to help us young guys, to understand what they need," he recently told . "We just try to absorb everything that he says because obviously he is the best player in the world. We are living the dream here, I’m enjoying it. I know when I go out there I have to kill it, but I’m living a huge dream.

"Sometimes I sit down and think about the position that I'm in, and it's incredible. I never believed I would be in the spot like I am today, and I just know I have to keep working and work for more."

    International beginnings

Despite his tender years, Cremaschi currently finds himself in the middle of a tug-of-war, with Messi on one side and the USMNT on the other.

So far during his young career, Cremaschi has had opportunities with both Argentina and the U.S., featuring for both countries' youth teams. In 2022, the midfielder was part of the U.S. U20 squad that trained alongside the pre-World Cup team in October before heading to Qatar and, shortly after, he was called in to Argentina's U20s for November camp as the only non-domestic-based player to earn a call-up.

With his breakout over the last few months, the competition for Cremaschi's international allegiance has only gotten hotter. Rumors began swirling during the summer that he could earn himself a USMNT call-up, while the midfielder has said that Messi has spoken to him about the possibility of representing Argentina in the future.

“Not easy, but not thinking about it right now," he told in August. "I’ve been in contact with both federations and I know it’s a decision I eventually have to make, but there’s time. I’ve spoken about it with Messi, he has asked me and I love Argentina."

However, it's the USMNT that have given him the opportunity in the September window as Cremaschi, alongside Inter Miami team-mate Drake Callendar, has been called-up by Gregg Berhalter.

Wolves transfer update on Ceballos

Many Wolves fans have been left to fume as a transfer update emerged on Dani Ceballos.

As per El Confidencial, the Midlands club are interested in signing the Real Madrid man in the summer window, however, he is not thought to be keen on a return to the Premier League, after he spent the past two seasons on loan at Arsenal.

Given that the Molineux faithful already have the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Leander Dendoncker and Morgan Gibbs-White as options in the centre of midfield, it may not be a wise idea to buy Ceballos as well, and instead strengthen in other positions.

The Spain international was not exactly inspiring with the Gunners either, scoring no goals and making just three assists in 40 games in total over all competitions in the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt).

The end of the road for Aaron Ramsdale? Arsenal interest in goalkeeper David Raya suggests Gunners' cult hero's days are numbered

Mikel Arteta's pursuit of Brentford's No.1 is unsurprising as it became clear during last season's title run-in that he needs a better goalkeeper

The confirmation of Arsenal's interest in signing David Raya upset some supporters, which was hardly surprising. The Gunners' first-choice goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, is something of a cult hero at the Emirates. He may have only arrived in north London from Sheffield United in the summer of 2021, but it wasn't long before he was regularly winning Arsenal Player of the Month awards, which are voted for by the fans.

And his popularity wasn't just secured due his acrobatics in between the sticks, even if they undoubtedly played a part. For example, goalkeeping icon Peter Schmeichel described the way in which he kept out a free-kick from Leicester's James Maddison in October 2021 as "the best save I've seen for years". Ramsdale also became a firm fan favourite for his very obvious love of playing for Arsenal. As a result, the scepticism which surrounded his £24 million ($31m) signing soon gave way to adoration.

Ramsdale was a player who wore his heart on his sleeve and the crowd loved him for it. His sense of humour also helped, of course, with Ramsdale appearing in an amusing ad which also featured Gunners great David Seaman.

'Honoured that you guys have welcomed me'

When he signed a contract extension in May of this year, he even publicly thanked the fans for the way in which they had warmed to a player who had been relegated in his two previous seasons in the Premier League – first with Sheffield United and then again at Bournemouth.

"I know you guys probably weren't overly excited by my signing – and I totally get it," he confessed. "I don't have any right to come here and expect you all to rate me from the get-go. This is a huge club and it's had some top-class goalkeepers along the way. But fair play, once I got into the team and I got my chance, I felt like we understood each other a lot more. I feel your love, and I feel like you feel mine as well.

"Hopefully, you get the idea that I give everything out there… I know I'm not from around here, but you lot make me feel like I am. I get messages and love from people all around the world, so I know how big the club is.

"You guys have taken my family in, making my dad feel like a superstar. It really gives a family feel to the football club. You make matchday so special and I can't imagine anywhere else for my home stadium to be, or my home. I feel honoured that you guys have welcomed me in and I feel honoured that the staff want me to stay. So, it was the easiest decision in the world to commit my future, to The Arsenal. So, let's keep moving forward as a club, and make some more special memories."

    Why Areta wants Raya

However, there is now the distinct possibility that his mutual love affair will end in heartbreak because Arsenal's mere interest in Raya suggests that Arteta is not entirely happy with Ramsdale – and that's entirely understandable.

It's been reported that the Spanish manager is simply trying to strengthen his squad. He allegedly wants two quality players competing for every starting sport – which is obviously the dream of every manager. However, the Raya transfer talk clearly spells trouble for Ramsdale – just as his signing signalled the end of Bernd Leno's spell as Arsenal's No.1. After all, it's not like Arsenal are going to pay more than £40m ($50m) for a new goalkeeper and leave him sitting on the bench.

There's a reason why Bayern Munich are also chasing Raya: he was outstanding for Brentford last season. As any Fantasy Football fan will tell you, he scored more points than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League. He kept 12 clean sheets – just two fewer than Ramsdale, who was playing in a title-challenging team – and had a far better save percentage (77 to 68.6).

  • (C)Getty Images

Arteta wants an upgrade on Ramsdale

However, the real reason why Arsenal are looking for a new No.1 is clearly Ramsdale's unreliability. No goalkeeper made more errors leading to shots in the Premier League last season (six), while two of his mistakes resulted in goals, including the wayward pass that led to the Gunners falling 1-0 behind just 28 seconds into their costly draw with Southampton at the Emirates.

Indeed, by that stage, it was clear that Arsenal weren't really strong enough from a defensive perspective to win the title. They ended up conceding 43 goals in total – 10 more than Manchester City and Newcastle, and as many as Manchester United – and suffered a dreadful dip following William Saliba's season-ending injury.

The arrival of the versatile Jurrien Timber should help address the lack of strength in depth at the back but Arteta clearly – and rightly – feels that he requires an upgrade on Ramsdale.

    Ramsdale not an elite goalkeeper

Erik ten Hag reached a similar conclusion at Manchester United, ruthlessly disposing of David de Gea – who won the Premier League's Golden Glove last season – because he wanted a goalkeeper as good at playing passes out from the back as keeping clean sheets. And the Dutchman is being commended for his conviction.

Arteta should be just as lauded for his clear-sightedness. Ramsdale is undeniably a good goalkeeper, but not good enough for a team with title aspirations. If Arsenal were to let him leave, he wouldn't even be considered by another elite European team.

Truth be told, Ramsdale wouldn't even rank among the top 20 goalkeepers in the game today. Let's face it, this is by no means a golden era for English goalkeepers and yet the 25-year-old was an unused substitute at the 2022 World Cup, with the desperately limited Jordan Pickford deemed a more trustworthy option by national team coach Gareth Southgate.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Ashley Young latest

Ashley Young has been linked with a return to Aston Villa, and plenty of Villa fans have been reacting to what Sky Sports have said on a potential deal.

Inter Milan are willing to let Young go this summer, with Villa, Watford and Burnley all keen on his services.

Sky Sports claim Villa are expected to open talks with Young’s representatives this week, with a move to Watford now looking unlikely following talks.

The 35-year-old, who helped Inter win Serie A last season by playing in three different positions, has turned down a new deal at the San Siro.

Villa have already signed Emiliano Buendia in a club-record deal and it appears as if Young could well be the next through the door in the Midlands, should talks go well.

How will England replace captain Leah Williamson in the Lionesses' 2023 Women's World Cup squad?

After the Arsenal star was ruled out of this summer's tournament with an ACL injury, who will step up in her absence?

On Friday, England were dealt the news that they will be without captain Leah Williamson for this summer's Women's World Cup.

It's a hammer blow for so many reasons. The Arsenal star is the Lionesses' leader and an excellent centre-back who forms part of such a formidable back line.

Not only does head coach Sarina Wiegman need to select the personality best-suited to taking her armband, but also the right player to replace her in the heart of defence.

The latter might not have the most straightforward solution. With the versatility that exists throughout the England player pool, there are a number of possible options and the route the coach takes could have quite a domino effect.

🏆 TOP STORY: England captain Williamson to miss World Cup

📣 HAVE YOUR SAY: Do Arsenal have any chance of winning the title?!

🚨 MUST READ: Toxic CR7 isn't getting his own way at Al-Nassr

GOAL takes a look at the candidates to captain the Lionesses at the 2023 Women's World Cup, who could replace Williamson in the starting line-up and who might take her spot in the squad as a whole with the reshuffle that may be needed.

  • Getty

    Millie Bright

When Williamson was missing from England squads during the first half of the season due to an ankle injury, it was Millie Bright, her centre-back partner, who took over the role as the Lionesses' captain.

The Chelsea defender is currently sidelined with her own knee injury and expected to be out for several weeks. But if she is fit in time for the World Cup, it is expected that she will wear the armband.

  • Getty Images

    Lucy Bronze

Another candidate for captaincy is Lucy Bronze. The Barcelona full-back has assumed the role before but not under Wiegman. She boasts a wealth of experience, having won 18 major honours – including three Champions League titles – with five different clubs.

Bronze is likely to be near the top of the list when it comes to the coach's options for the armband and could certainly come into consideration if Bright does not recover from the injury that has kept her out since late March.

  • Getty

    Alex Greenwood

Like Bright, Alex Greenwood has worn the captain's armband for England this season, leading the team out in the Arnold Clark Cup in February when they faced Italy. Not only is she a contender to take Williamson's role as skipper, though, but also her spot in the centre of defence.

Greenwood has often been Wiegman's go-to to play there when Williamson or Bright have been missing, or when Williamson has been deployed in midfield, and she is probably the most likely candidate to partner the latter at the 2023 Women's World Cup now.

    Jess Carter

When England were without Bright during the April international window, Wiegman moved Greenwood into centre-back and had her role at left-back, that she played in during February's games, filled by Jess Carter.

The Chelsea star is a very versatile player, capable of operating in any position in the backline and also in midfield. With Williamson dropping out of the line-up, moving Greenwood inside would open up a spot in the XI on the left of that defence that Carter could well be chosen to occupy.

Celtic may sign their new Viduka this summer

With Ange Postecoglou finally announced as the new manager of Celtic, the Hoops can now crack on with a busy summer of recruitment.

After such a dismal campaign, the Bhoys will need to get their efforts spot on if they are to usurp their biggest rivals again.

What’s the word?

One of the players who Celtic have been linked with signing is Charlie Wyke.

The striker is out of contract with Sunderland and is yet to pen new terms, meaning he could leave the North East club on a free transfer.

A fresh update from the Northern Echo (via Nottingham Post) suggests that the Mackems are continuing negotiations over his future but that he has received ‘alternative offers’ from other teams.

The Hoops aren’t the only side interested with Wyke attracting the eyes of Cardiff, Middlesbrough Millwall and Ipswich.

Should Celtic sign him?

Wyke’s record this season was nothing short of sensational as Sunderland just missed out on promotion from League One.

The 28-year-old registered an incredible haul of 3o strikes, taking his tally in the red and white to 41 goals in only 113 outings.

Supporters might have concerns over his ability at a higher level but he is a bullish forward who has the potential to cause havoc in the Premiership.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-faria-postecoglou-howe-elyounoussi” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

Standing at a colossal height of 6 foot 2, the attacker is particularly dominant in the air. That being said, he also has decent feet for such a tall player.

This term, Wyke netted as many as 12 goals with his head, battering opponents to one side in robust style.

Described as “clinical” by Sunderland boss Lee Johnson, Postecoglou could evoke memories of his fellow Australian, Mark Viduka, by signing him.

Like Wyke, the striker was clinical and particularly dangerous in the air.

Describing the former Celtic star in an article for Planet Football, it reads: “This was Peak Viduka: a threat in the air but majestic with the ball at his feet. To trot out the ‘good touch for a big man’ cliche fails to do him justice. He had a brilliant touch for any man. He just happened to be big as well.”

The Aussie only spent the best part of 18 months in Glasgow but amassed an eye-catching haul of 30 goals in just 37 outings.

It would be typical now the Hoops have his countryman in charge to discover a striker of similar ilk but that’s precisely why Wyke must be signed.

He’d offer something entirely different to Odsonne Edouard and the other forward’s in Celtic’s frontline.

AND in other news, Celtic eye move for “brilliant” 47-goal star, he’d be a fantastic Edouard successor…

Mbappe is back – but Messi remains the GOAT! PSG winners & losers as thrilling win over Lille overshadows Neymar injury woes

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner curled in a stoppage-time free-kick to rescue a come-from-behind 4-3 win for the French champions

Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier might just have had his job saved. With his side 3-2 down against Lille entering the final couple of minutes having taken a 2-0 lead, the writing was on the wall for a coach who had previously overseen three straight defeats.

Not every coach has players like Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi to call upon, though.

Mbappe stepped up first, prodding home Juan Bernat's pull-back to level the scores, before Messi curled home a superb low free-kick in the fifth minute of stoppage-time to send the home crowd into raptures.

It had looked pretty routine for PSG early on. Mbappe and Neymar both scored within the first 17 minutes, but Lille stuck around, and Bafode Diakite eventually benefitted, pulling one back after a well-worked corner routine.

PSG endured a miserable start to the second half, as first Neymar badly rolled an already-injured ankle and had to be stretchered off, before Lille equalised from the penalty spot through Jonathan David.

The visitors then took the lead as Jonathan Bamba fired home a fierce shot to cap a fine counter-attack, but they were unable to hold on in the face of two of the game's true superstars.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Parc des Princes…

  • WINNER: Kylian Mbappe

PSG, unsurprisingly, looked far more dangerous when Mbappe was on the pitch in their 1-0 loss against Bayern Munich, and having made that return from injury, he was back in the line up on Sunday.

What an impact he made, too. Mbappe bagged the opener with a sublime piece of skill and comfortable finish, and stretched the Lille defence throughout.

He then found the vital equaliser in the final minutes, too, bursting into the box and poking Bernat's cut-back into the bottom corner.

Mbappe wasn't a one man show – Messi made sure of that – but he was every bit the star performer for PSG here.

    LOSER: Neymar

Well, that looked like it hurt!

Neymar has been trying to play on the same ankle he sprained at the World Cup for nearly six weeks. It was, perhaps, always bound to catch up with him.

And so it did on Sunday, as he badly twisted his ankle early in the second half. He was unable to walk off himself, and had to be stretchered from the field.

PSG play Bayern Munich in the Champions League in 17 days, and Neymar now appears to be a serious doubt for that fixture.

    WINNER: Lionel Messi

Messi was anonymous for 90 minutes here. The Argentine hardly touched the ball. And aside from a covert dummy in the build up to PSG's second goal, his impact on the game had been minimal.

But that's kind of how Messi is these days. The World Cup winner has become a 'moments' player; a footballer who can simply pick his spots to show up at this point.

And on Sunday he did just that, scoring a wonderful free-kick deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic late win for a PSG side that badly needed it.

Mbappe may have been the most consistent contributor on the day and across the season for PSG, but Messi is still the best to ever do it, and he's not tired of showing it yet.

    LOSER: Nuno Mendes

Can he ever catch a break?

Nuno Mendes isn't the finished article at full-back, but he's a serious talent, and has shown immense potential in his first 18 months in Paris.

Injury struggles have stunted his development this season, though, and they popped up again on Sunday.

Mendes exited the game in the first half with a foot injury, another blemish on what has become a difficult campaign for the Portugal international.

PSG will hope it's not too serious; his pace will be vital against Bayern's speedy wingers in two-and-a-half weeks' time.
