100 touches, 96% pass rate: Farke could boldly drop 6/10 Leeds star

After last weekend’s disappointment, Leeds United returned to winning ways with a relatively routine victory away to Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon, with goals from Largie Ramazani and substitute Joel Piroe proving the difference on the day.

Having slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of newly-relegated Burnley last time out, the Yorkshire side were handed a welcome boost in the early stages this time around, with Joel Bagan seeing red for a foul on Wilfried Gnonto after just 23 minutes.

The visitors swiftly made that advantage count as new man Ramazani curled home in fine fashion, although it wasn’t until the 87th minute that the points were finally secured, with ex-Swansea City star Piroe expertly converting from the angle, following Pascal Struijk’s earlier spot-kick attempt which had been denied.

All in all, it’s a case of take the win and move on for the Whites after having not quite been at their free-flowing best, although manager Daniel Farke will still have plenty to ponder amid what was a mixed bag of a performance from his side.

Leeds' star performers vs Cardiff

A word must, of course, be said for the aforementioned Ramazani, with the diminutive winger – who arrived on a £9m deal from Almeria over the summer – making the most of his first start for the club with that well-taken, first-half strike.

Largie Ramazani

On the opposite flank, it was young Gnonto who proved to be ‘Leeds’ most creative and influential player going forward’ – as per the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth – with the 20-year-old Italian also completing three successful dribbles and registering one key pass as he looked to make things happen for his side, as per Sofascore.

With the likes of Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville no longer in the equation, Farke will be looking to this wing pairing to provide Leeds’ creative spark, alongside the returning figure of Brenden Aaronson.

One place where creativity remains hard to come by, however, is in the midfield ranks, with the solid, but unspectacular pairing of Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev hardly setting things alight from their double pivot.

Having struggled to break down the Bluebirds at times, the question remains as to whether that duo represents the most fruitful solution moving forward.

Ilia Gruev's game in numbers vs Cardiff

It would be harsh to suggest that Gruev, in particular, did anything hugely wrong up against the ten men of Erol Bulut’s side, having notably enjoyed a stunning pass success rate of 96% from his 89-minute outing.

With former Chelsea man Ampadu – who won eight duels in total – tasked with breaking up the play, the onus was on Gruev to try and dictate the tempo, yet far too often did the Bulgarian opt for the safe approach.

That can be evidenced by the fact that despite having 100 touches, the 24-year-old didn’t provide a single key pass, having also completed just one of his three long balls attempts.

As per Smyth – who awarded Gruev a 6/10 match rating – the left-footer ‘couldn’t provide anything really incisive’, having at one stage even drawn groans from the away end for his desire to go backwards, rather than look ahead.

While Farke will be happy for his side to control games, there will also be a need to provide quality service to the front four – something which neither Gruev, nor Ampadu, appear best suited to do.

With Gruev also somewhat suspect defensively on occasion – having been dribbled past twice while also winning just one of his four ground duels – it could be the former Werder Bremen man who is sacrificed, rather than his skipper.

It would, of course, be a bold move to change a winning team, but with the likes of Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell waiting in the wings, the former Norwich City boss may need to be ruthless.

"Unreal": Sheffield United have a 20 y/o rising star who is "a real player"

Sheffield United have been told they have an “unreal” talent who “looks a real player” among their ranks this season after they put in another top display in the Championship.

Sheffield United beat Hull City

Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United continued their unbeaten start to the Championship season as they brushed aside Hull City 2-0 at the MKM stadium on Friday night.

Gustavo Hamer set the Blades on their way with an excellent finish after Callum O Hare robbed the ball back on the halfway line for United before teeing up his teammate to lash home from 12 yards. They added their second goal on the hour mark when Sam McCallum finished off a fine counter-attack that Kieffer Moore had led, doubling his side’s advantage and ensuring that they left Hull with all three points.

Despite a quiet transfer window, the result moved them onto nine points after five games, with three wins having been accompanied by two draws. It is a strong start as Wilder’s side look to secure an instant return back to the Premier League after their relegation last season. However, the Sheffield United boss felt his side should have done even better.

“I don’t think it was the most free-flowing performance for us, I think we’ve played a lot better in the last four games but it’s a great experience, it’s a young team, we’re still learning. That will be a great experience for them.

“We need to be better with the ball. They give you a chance, I was just a bit disappointed that when they gave us the chance to nick it off them, which we did, we weren’t better and more clinical”, he explained.

Despite his concerns, one player stood out as a potential future star in English football.

20-year-old Blades starlet earns rave reviews

That comes as 20-year-old loanee Alfire Gilchrist once again stood out to onlookers as he put in another top performance for the Blades. The Chelsea man, who is spending the season at Bramall Lane, has started every single game so far this season and has been impressive, but his performance against Hull may have been his best yet.

He won all three of his tackles, as well as making 10 clearances and winning five duels in his 83 minutes on the pitch.

Sheffield United fan account AllThingsBlades took to X to dub him “unreal” against the Tigers, while local media also raved about his performance. Meanwhile, the Sheffield Star handed him an 8/10.

“Since he arrived at Sheffield United I can’t remember anyone getting the better of Gilchrist in a one-on-one situation and the Chelsea loanee just absolutely lives for defending. He celebrated one block like he’d just scored the winner and picked up a booking for scything down Omur with typical gusto. Looks a real player”

Though only on loan at Bramall Lane, it seems as though Sheffield United fans might have a rising star on their hands for at least this season.

He’s like De Jong: Man Utd have already sold their next Gomes for just £850k

While it is often bemoaned by fans and Premier League clubs alike, the international break does have its silver linings.

One is that it gives players who are perhaps on the periphery of the national team the chance to make their debut or pick up some more caps, as the stakes are far lower.

This happened in England's game against Ireland over the weekend, as former Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes earned his first cap and then started his first game for the Three Lions against Finland a few days later.

The talented midfielder looked great in both games, and unfortunately for the United fans upset at missing out on him, they may have already sold a youngster who could have been their next Gomes, a prospect who's even been compared to Frenkie de Jong before.

Angel Gomes journey to England

After rising through the youth ranks, Gomes left United in the summer of 2020 and joined French outfit LOSC Lillie on a free, although he was immediately loaned out to Portuguese side Boavista for the 20/21 season.

The young Englishman made 32 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing six assists, impressing his parent club in the process.

He wasn't one of the first names on the teamsheet upon his return to Lille, but he did make 30 appearances across the 21/22 campaign, during which he also became a mainstay in Lee Carsley's England U21 side.

The following two years saw him establish himself as an important cog in Les Dogues' machine, as he made 84 appearances, primarily in defensive, central, and attacking midfield, in which he racked up 21 goals and assists. Unsurprisingly, the 24-year-old has been just as important this season.

He has already made four appearances in the league and Champions League qualifiers, in addition to his two England caps, and while he couldn't get into United's team four years ago, he certainly looks like he would today.

The bad news for the Red Devils is that they may have just sold their next Gomes as well.

Why selling Zidane Iqbal might've been a mistake

Yes, the former United youngster in question is Zidaen Iqbal, who was sold to FC Utrecht in June 2023 for a fee believed to be just £850k.

Now, he's certainly not a household name, but Iqbal was a player who looked very promising during Ten Hag's first preseason campaign with the club, and while you cannot fully judge a player off of how they perform in friendlies, the signs were positive, with BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone describing his performances as "so impressive."

The then 19-year-old also impressed Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy, who described the midfielder as possessing "heaps of technical quality, skill and intelligence" and that he's the sort of player who "demands the ball, moves, scans, never hides and is not scared of making a mistake" – in short, he was looking like an excellent prospect.

If that is not enough, then you should listen to what talent scout Jacek Kulig had to say about the Manchester-born gem, as he described him as a "roaming playmaker" and compared him to the incredibly gifted De Jong, which, based on his position and the way others had spoken about him at the time, makes sense.

Moreover, like the Dutchman, the former Red Devil stands at 5 foot 11, and while that's not short, he's not a midfield destroyer.

Lastly, while he wasn't quite able to break into the first team, he was a star of the youth sides and made 35 appearances for the U23s despite leaving the club when he was just 20.

Ultimately, letting Iqbal leave last summer was probably the right thing to do for his development, as when fit, he played for Utrecht last season, but with how Gomes has progressed in Portugal and France and the pair's positional similarities, it's hard not to look at the Iraqi international and see him developing into a player United should have kept on the books.

Wolves senior player now wants to leave after barely playing this season

A European side are looking into signing a senior Wolverhampton Wanderers player in the January transfer window, according to a new report, and he wants to go.

The Midlands side have just come off the back of an extremely busy and frustrating transfer window, as Gary O’Neil hopes he now has enough to tackle the first six months of the Premier League campaign.

ByEthan Lamb Aug 30, 2024 Wolves’ transfer window

Wolves were very busy during the summer transfer window, especially towards the end, as they brought in eight new players. The club’s biggest arrival was midfielder Andre, who joined them on transfer deadline day.

As well as improving the squad, Wolves were unable to get through the transfer window without losing key players, as they saw Pedro Neto and Max Kilman leave Molineaux for big money to Premier League rivals.

While losing these two players, the window could have got better for Wolves were they able to complete a couple of transfers. One player the Premier League side had their eye on was Sassuolo winger Armand Lauriente, with Wolves making an offer for the player.

The attacker enjoyed a successful 2023/24 season with the Italian side despite them being relegated, and those in the Midlands were keen to bring him to Molineux. However, a deal was unable to get over the line before the window slammed shut.

Another player Wolves had their eye on was West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd, as they were interested in a deal before the window closed. The defender fell out of favour with the Hammers, and Wolves were reportedly interested, but he joined Real Sociedad on loan.

The transfer window is now closed for the English teams, but it has emerged that a Wolves player is already being eyed by a European side ahead of the January transfer window.

Wolves player wants to leave and could be sold for pennies

According to Vamos Mi Sevilla, relayed by Sport Witness, La Liga side Sevilla are weighing up a move for Wolves forward Pablo Sarabia, with the player keen to leave the Premier League side.

The report states that Sarabia is not considered a key player for Wolves, and that has given Sevilla hope of landing the player in January, as he also “wants to return to Spain." The 32-year-old has played for the Spanish side before, and they are interested in re-signing him, as they believe he would bring goals and creativity, something they state they are missing now.

Sevilla consider this potential transfer to be a “low-cost operation” given the fact that he is now 32, and he is in the final year of his contract with the Premier League side, meaning by January Wolves would have little negotiating power, especially with the player's stance.

Sarabia joined Wolves in January 2023 from PSG, and since joining the club, he has played 52 times in all competitions, scoring five goals and recording 10 assists. The Spaniard has featured three times for Wolves this season, twice in the league and once in the EFL Cup, but only playing a total of 90 minutes of football spread across the three games.

Rangers Could Sign £21k-p/w "Fantastic Prospect" Permanently

Rangers' loan deal for Brighton & Hove Albion forward Abdallah Sima could include an option to make his move permanent, according to a report from The Herald.

Which striker are Rangers signing?

Rangers have recently submitted an undisclosed bid for Feyenoord striker Danilo, however it was instantly rejected by the Dutch champions, who are holding out for a fee of more than £5m if they are to part ways with the Brazilian.

The same report details that Michael Beale's main priority to bolster his attack is Cremonese's Cyriel Dessers, but those talks also appear to have stalled, with the Italian club's asking price of £6.5m deemed to be too high.

As reported by Football Insider, the Gers are in very advanced talks to sign Sima on loan, with negotiations progressing well, although a deal is still yet to be agreed.

Now, The Herald have provided a new update on the intricacies of the deal, stating the Light Blues could have the option to sign the Brighton ace on a permanent basis, should Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi rule that he is not part of his long-term plans.

The 22-year-old is expected to complete a switch to Ibrox this week, with Beale close to strengthening his squad ahead of the return to pre-season training this Friday.

The manager is said to be excited about adding the Senegal international to the squad, and the deal could be finalised in the coming days.

Who is Abdallah Sima?

The £21k-per-week attacker spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Ligue 1 side Angers, where he registered six goals in all competitions, displaying his versatility by featuring on both flanks, in attacking midfield, and at striker.

Hailed as a "fantastic prospect" by football scout Jacek Kulig, the forward also impressed during his time with Slavia Prague, scoring 11 league goals in the 2020-21 campaign, and receiving a man-of-the-match award from the BBC against Rangers in the Europa League.

One of the former Angers man's defining traits is his pace, clocking in at 35.64 km/h in Ligue 1 last season, indicating he would be able to cause real problems for Scottish Premiership defences with his speed.

Given some of the performances Sima has put in for both Slavia Prague and Angers, it is exciting news that he is edging closer towards a switch to Ibrox, and that Rangers have an option to sign him on a permanent basis.

Arsenal: Gunners Ready To Sell "Amazing" Star

Arsenal are “ready to let” forward Folarin Balogun leave the club this summer and they believe it will help them sign top targets, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Who will leave Arsenal this summer?

Supporters can expect serious transfer activity at the Emirates Stadium this summer as Gunners transfer chief Edu works on signing numerous players.

West Ham United star Declan Rice has been subject to bids from Arsenal as they battle treble-winners Man City for his signature, and the saga could well be one of their talking points of this transfer window.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that they’re actively pursuing a deal for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, with positive talks ongoing behind-the-scenes as the player himself eyes a move to north London (Sky).

Southampton’s Romeo Lavia is being targeted as well, with Germany international Kai Havertz already joining Arsenal as their first signing of the summer.

Mikel Arteta’s side could spend around £200 million on fresh faces this summer, according to some media sources, so they’ll need to offload efficiently.

Of the players tipped to leave, there are a fair few, with Thomas Partey, Kieran Tierney, Emile Smith Rowe, Nuno Tavares, Sambi Lokonga and Granit Xhaka all linked with an exit (Goal).

Balogun, who dazzled on loan at Reims last season, could make way as well with a report by O’Rourke and Football Insider sharing news.

Stade Reims striker Folarin Balogun.

They claim that Arsenal are “ready to let” the forward leave this summer, hoping to collect around £35 million, and the club believe this transfer could help them sign top targets financially.

This comes after Balogun ruled out another loan move, with a well-placed source telling the site that he is ready to lay down roots at a permanent new club.

Who is Folarin Balogun?

The 21-year-old scored 21 goals and in 27 Ligue 1 appearances over 2022/2023 (WhoScored), all while notching a further two assists, potentially prompting Arsenal to demand that £35m fee.

French football expert Julien Laurens, writing on Twitter, heaped praise on Balogun for an outstanding performance against PSG at the Parc des Princes in January – calling him an “amazing talent”.

Based off these accolades, there should be no shortage of suitors.

Newcastle: £30m Transfer Spells Bad News for Gordon

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich phenom Sadio Mane of late to underscore the meteoric rise of the club over the past season or so, now formidable Champions League contenders after previously languishing as relegation candidates.

This month, German newspaper BILD (via Caught Offside) have linked Mane with a move back to the Premier League after signing for the Bavaria giants for £35m last summer, leaving Liverpool after years of illustrious success under Jurgen Klopp.

Newcastle and Manchester United have been credited with an interest for the distinguished and Premier League-proven star, who could cost just £30m after a somewhat inauspicious spell in the German Bundesliga, and given the Toon have secured a top-four finish this year, the allure factor has returned to St. James' Park and Mane may well be enticed.

And recently, in cryptic fashion, the 31-year-old left a tantalising message to play on the Magpies' minds when questioned on his future while on international duty, saying "never say never" when asked about a possible move to Newcastle.

Should Newcastle sign Sadio Mane?

Considering the current state of play on Tyneside, there is every possibility that world-class stars such as Mane would be attracted to the possibility of moving to the club to take on a central role in Eddie Howe's project.

Candidly, Newcastle look destined for the very top after the lucrative takeover in 2021, and with the manner in which the outfit have worked across the park, diligent decisions and tactical brilliance from a footballing standpoint allude to a prosperous future at the forefront of the game.

Mane would bring instantaneous success and striking potency of a calibre that perhaps no other United ace could quite match; Callum Wilson is a prolific striker; Alexander Isak is dynamic, but Mane offers the whole gamut and has left a trail of devastation in his wake across the duration of his career.

The £363k-per-week gem scored 111 goals for Liverpool from 263 outings, also assisting 48 times, and captivated fans with his displays, leaving former boss Jurgen Klopp hailing him as "world-class" and as a "machine".

Typically found on the offensive left flank, the 95-cap AFCON champion's arrival at St. James' Park would surely spell danger for Anthony Gordon, who has not quite found his feet since completing a £45m transfer from Everton this January.

The 22-year-old scored against Chelsea on the final day of the Premier League season to finally break his duck after 16 appearances and has indeed offered glimpses of high-class promise for Howe's outfit, but given his positional preference aligns with Mane's, it could prove detrimental to his development.

European competition will at least provide greater opportunity for players to impress at Newcastle, but with such a superlative acquisition, Gordon will surely have to play with impeccable style to ensure that his manager keeps the faith.

If he doesn't, then a player of Mane's calibre would no doubt easily displace him.

Arsenal: Gunners Make Offer To Sign Zidane-Esque Star

Arsenal have made a “proposal” to sign Chelsea forward Kai Havertz this summer, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Who could join Arsenal this summer?

After missing out on their first Premier League title in nearly 20 years, with Man City’s treble-winners beating them to the league, it’s time to prepare for the 2023/2024 season.

To go again and mount another challenge, Arsenal will need to strengthen in key areas of the pitch, with sporting director Edu confirming long ago that plans have already been well underway.

“Our planning has already been done.” said Edu to ESPN in April (via 90min).

“It has already reached the owners. Now, we’re taking things step by step. We’re focused on how we will finish the season, but we’ve put in the planning and I’m very excited.”

West Ham star Declan Rice, who is on the way out of his current club this window, is a firm transfer target for the Gunners with Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Man City captain Ilkay Gundogan also being eyed up for the midfield areas.

Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Arsenal could set their sights on additions at full-back, leading to interest in City defender Joao Cancelo, Galatasary star Sacha Boey and Real Valladolid ace Ivan Fresneda.

Following William Saliba’s season-ending back injury, there have also been suggestions that the north Londoners could target a centre back signing too.

However, according to reliable journalist Ornstein, it appears a brand new target in Havertz has come right to the forefront these past 24 hours.

kai-havertz-chelsea-arsenal-transfer-gossip-robin-van-persie-arteta-edu

Arsenal’s pursuit of the Germany international has apparently ramped up “in recent days” and a “proposal” has been made by Arteta’s side after contact with both the player and Chelsea.

Who is Kai Havertz?

Called “exceptional” by members of the media, Havertz has been likened to both former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil, for his brilliant left foot, and even Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane.

Lothar Matthaus, speaking to Kicker (via The Mirror), claims the forward has shades of France’s footballing icon.

“I compare him to Zinedine Zidane in terms of skills, technique and overview, and anticipating a situation,” said Matthaus.

“Zidane didn’t seem quick, but he was when he hit the ball. Havertz can do that too.”

Liverpool Keeping Tabs On "Class" £1m Kelleher Replacement

Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler ahead of a potential move to the Premier League, according to reports.

Who is Ron-Robert Zieler?

Zieler first arrived at the Heinz von Heiden-Arena from Stuttgart back in 2019 but most of the early years of his career were spent in England, having carried out spells at Manchester United, Northampton and Leicester City, as per Transfermarkt, so he’s no stranger to the style of football in the UK.

The German will be out of contract at the end of next season meaning that the upcoming window will present Stefan Leitl with his final opportunity to cash in should he not want to risk losing him for free in 12 months time, and Jurgen Klopp has already registered his interest.

Football Insider reported in May that the Reds have contacted the 34-year-old’s representatives to discover what it would take to complete a deal, with journalist David Lynch claiming that his homegrown status is “part of the appeal”, and they must have liked the information that they gathered on him because it seems they are considering a swoop in the coming weeks.

Are Liverpool signing Zieler?

According to German outlet BILD (via TEAMtalk), Liverpool are "chasing" Zieler, with the goalkeeper "high" on FSG's summer wishlist. Sporting director Jorg Schmadtke was the person who signed him at Hannover and it's stated that the chief has "told" the Merseyside outfit that he can "secure the deal" to bring him to Anfield. The Reds haven't yet "officially bid", but a seven-figure offer being tabled could be "too good to ignore", with £1m the price tag being mentioned by the outlet.

Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler.

Should FSG pay the £1m for Zieler?

Liverpool will be aware that Kelleher could be set to leave over the summer in a bid to find regular game time elsewhere so a replacement will be needed should he depart, and considering the calibre of goalkeeper Zieler is, £1m would be an absolute bargain.

The Sports360 client, who’s previously been lauded a “class” shot-stopper by Germany’s former international manager Joachim Low, kept eight clean sheets in 34 Bundesliga appearances last season and was recognised for his individual efforts by picking up three man-of-the-match awards.

The 2014 World Cup winner, who stands at 6 foot 2, could also bring excellent leadership qualities to the squad because he is the captain of his side so would be commanding and be able to organise his team from between the sticks, so whilst he’d only be a back-up rather than a number one, it would absolutely be worth splashing the cash to get him in the building.

Spurs Could Land Eriksen Heir In £40m Gem

There has been an update regarding Tottenham Hotspur's apparent interest in Southampton talisman, James Ward-Prowse…

What's the latest on Ward-Prowse to Tottenham?

According to Football Insider, the Lilywhites – as well as rivals West Ham United – are believed to be the frontrunners in the battle to land the England international, with the Premier League pair said to be 'pushing hardest' to get a deal over the line.

The piece adds that Spurs, in particular, have been keeping tabs on the 28-year-old over an extended period of time, with the north Londoners now having the perfect chance to pounce following the Saints' recent relegation.

If Ange Postecoglou and co are to make a move for the 11-cap playmaker, previous reports earlier this month suggested that it could require a fee of around £40m, with three years still left to run on the player's existing deal.

Should Tottenham sign Ward-Prowse?

A deal for Ward-Prowse could potentially allow Tottenham to finally fill the creative, midfield void that was left behind by Christian Eriksen following his departure for Inter Milan back in 2020, with journalist Dean Jones having stated last summer that the club "haven't replaced Eriksen's profile and creativity".

Club legend Glenn Hoddle has also spoken of the need to replace the experienced Dane after stating his desire to see Daniel Levy recruit 'a player who can pick passes', before going on to name Ward-Prowse – who he described as a 'major asset' – as a possible candidate for that vacancy.

Christian Eriksen for Spurs

While filling the shoes of a player who racked up 90 goals and 69 assists for Spurs in 305 games would not be easy, the Saints star also possesses the quality to make a telling impact in the final third, having registered 53 assists and 55 goals in 409 games across all fronts for the south coast side.

Lauded by teammate Jan Bednarek for having the "best delivery in the league", Ward-Prowse also mirrors Eriksen due to his set-piece quality as he has scored 17 Premier League free-kicks to date, with the current Manchester United man – who has scored eight top-flight free-kicks – also having "very, very good set-piece delivery, both from corners and direct free kicks", according to Brentford boss, Thomas Frank.

The introduction of an Eriksen-like figure could also potentially benefit Tottenham's free-scoring talisman, Harry Kane, with talkSPORT pundit Darren Ambrose claiming earlier this year that Ward-Prowse could help his compatriot to score "an extra ten goals a season", due to his devastating delivery.

While there have been claims that Kane could be on his way out of the club this summer – amid links to both Manchester United and Real Madrid – Ambrose even went as far as to suggest that if "you sign James Ward-Prowse, Harry Kane stays."

Whether that proves true or not, it would certainly be a benefit for both Kane – and for new boss Postecoglou – if Spurs could find an heir to Eriksen this summer…
