Man City fans slam this EA snub

Manchester City fans are livid after some of their players were snubbed by EA when they revealed their FIFA 21 Team of the Season.

It has been a fabulous season for the Citizens so far. They are currently ten points clear at the top of the Premier League (Sky Sports), have already lifted the League Cup and have one foot in the Champions League final after beating Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their semi-final.

Some of Pep Guardiola’s men have had fantastic seasons, and Ederson, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin de Bruyne were all selected. However, there were some surprising omissions, such as John Stones and Phil Foden, who have both arguably had their best seasons to date at the Etihad Stadium.

The news of EA’s decision was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the City supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the Man City fans had to say below

West Ham gifted possible Nketiah boost

Taking to Twitter, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has shared news on Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah in what could be a boost for West Ham United.

The Lowdown: West Ham eyeing Nketiah…

The Gunners forward has been on West Ham and manager David Moyes’ radar since the summer window, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming they were one of a host of clubs eyeing his signature.

That interest has followed through into the winter months, it seems, as a report from TRANSFERmarketWEB detailed just last week.

According to the outlet’s information, West Ham are still very much in the running and made a recent inquiry, but they’re not alone with Leeds United, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach and Crystal Palace linked as well.

They claim Arsenal may end up selling him permanently in January if Nketiah doesn’t sign a new deal, which expires in 2022, and Sheth has now brought the latest on his precarious contract situation at the Emirates.

The Latest: Nketiah ‘increasingly likely’ to leave…

As per Sheth, the 22-year-old is now ‘increasingly likely’ to leave north London amid West Ham’s reported interest with talks over fresh terms so far failing.

“Talks over new contract for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah so far failed to find a resolution,” he said on Twitter.

“Increasingly likely Nketiah will not stay beyond summer. Nketiah can sign pre-contract with foreign club in January.

“He wants regular football. Arteta wants him to stay.”

The Verdict: Time to pounce?

An England Under-21 international with plenty of sell-on value and humungous potential, we believe the winter window presents West Ham an opportunity to take full advantage of these stalled new deal talks.

Arsenal will have to contemplate offloading him mid-season or risk losing him for nothing on a pre-contract, something Gunners transfer chief and technical director Edu may want to avoid.

Nketiah’s valued at around £10.8 million by Transfermarkt, an arguably affordable fee from West Ham’s perspective, and Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky’s new found investment will hopefully mean Moyes gets backing in the transfer market to finally sign a much-needed back up striker (Evening Standard).

Lauded as a ‘clinical’ forward by former teammate Charlie Gilmour (onlinegooner.com), this notion is backed by his prolific record for the Three Lions juniors.

Indeed, Nketiah’s phenomenal England U21’s record of 16 goals in just 17 caps more than highlights the fact he knows where to find the net.

Homegrown, and with Arsenal in a fairly weak negotiating position given the player’s contract situation, West Ham could seal a shrewd alternative to Michail Antonio with a winter swoop.

Romagnoli has Tottenham proposal tabled

According to Calciomercato, there has been an update on the future of AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli and it involves Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Conte eyeing Serie A swoops…

One of the recurring themes of new manager Antonio Conte’s time at Spurs so far is the repeated links to some of Italian football’s biggest names.

Indeed, Calciomercato recently claimed that the 52-year-old could target as many as six Serie A players in Federico Chiesa, Matthijs de Ligt, Stefan de Vrij, Marcelo Brozovic, Vlahovic and Romagnoli.

Another San Siro star in Franck Kessie has also been repeatedly linked with Tottenham as both Rudy Galetti and La Gazzetta (via Get Italian Football News) drop suggestions of a very advanced move.

The topic of this report is Romagnoli, however, as Calciomercato bring news on Spurs’ pursuit of the player after TuttoJuve24 claimed Conte is ‘ready’ to take him ‘immediately’.

The Latest: Romagnoli has ‘proposal’ from Tottenham…

As well as the majority of Tottenham’s targets being from Serie A, a number of them could also leave for free in the summer of 2022. Indeed, the likes of Brozovic, Kessie and Romagnoli all currently have deals which expire at the end of this season and are free to negotiate pre-contract terms with other clubs in January.

According to Calciomercato, the Milan defender has ‘many proposals’ on the table, including from Juventus and Spurs as both clubs endanger the Rossoneri’s chances of agreeing fresh terms with their captain.

The Verdict: Astute option?

If Tottenham can secure an agreement to sign Romagnoli for free next summer, or even for a cut-price fee in January, we believe he could be an astute purchase to partner Cristian Romero.

The 26-year-old, who would come with a longer shelf life than fellow centre-back targets like De Vrij, stands out as a composed and assured figure in central defence.

So far this season, Romagnoli has averaged a higher pass accuracy than any Tottenham defender, with teammate Fikayo Tomori also labelling him a ‘great champion’ alongside teammate Simon Kjaer (Corriere dello Sport via milannews.it).

With the player earning a reported £106,000 per week, Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici wouldn’t exactly have to break the bank with Romangnoli’s salary demands either, given that a fee around that amount should be more than attainable.

The 6 foot 2 powerhouse may well bolster Conte’s backline as he aims to bring glory back to N17.

Southampton handed Moi Elyounoussi boost

With just three wins, seven draws and five defeats under their belt, it’s safe to say that Southampton have had a rather mixed season in the Premier League so far.

One man who has played a big part in their campaign so far is Mohamed Elyounoussi, who has scored four goals and provided two assists in 13 appearances across all competitions.

After spending a couple of years on loan at Celtic, where he racked up 24 goals and 17 assists in 67 appearances, the winger has been a regular figure for Ralph Hasenhuttl this season.

Back in October, it was reported that fellow Premier League clubs Arsenal and Leicester City were interested in signing the Norwegian, who has been described in the past by Tom English as a “dangerous” player.

However, it seems as though the south coast club have been handed a boost regarding his future, which will surely have a lot of fans buzzing. Elyounoussi has revealed in recent days that he and his family are comfortable living in Southampton at the moment and that it’s where they “belong.”

This should be a big relief to the club and any Southampton fans who may have been concerned about a potential exit being on the cards for the 27-year-old, who is currently earning £59k-per-week according to Salary Sport.

Taking into account how Southampton have a track record of selling players to fellow Premier League clubs in recent years – such as Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, Matt Targett and Danny Ings to Aston Villa and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Tottenham Hotspur among others – it seems unlikely that fans would have been open to seeing their club flogging yet another one of their assets to a top-flight rival.

Moving forward, if Elyounoussi can add some more goals and assists to his tally for the season in the Premier League, he could finally prove himself to Hasenhuttl after spending such a long time in Scotland with Celtic.

If that is the case, however, there’s every possibility that other clubs could then have an interest in signing Elyounoussi and could make it difficult for Southampton to keep hold of him, especially if a club which can offer him European football and higher wages were to come in for him.

With that in mind and his current contract at St Mary’s set to expire in the summer of 2023, it could be worth the hierarchy at Southampton offering him a new deal before this one runs out.

Celtic: Are they missing Craig Gordon?

Very few club figures have been able to get away with Celtic’s diabolical season. Neil Lennon has already paid the price while it’s perhaps driven Peter Lawwell to retirement too.

The boardroom figure will depart Parkhead in the summer and with it, he will leave behind a number of mistakes; one of which was ensuring that Lennon stayed for so long.

On the chalkboard

Celtic are on the verge of losing their grasp on the SPFL title to their biggest rivals and there are a number of reasons why.

On the field of play, the primary reason has been their defence. Individual errors have plagued their backline with the Bhoys conceding many more goals than Rangers in the league. They also shipped a haul of 19 strikes in just six Europa League outings.

It has been a dismal campaign for a host of defenders, no less than the likes of Shane Duffy whose loan spell from Brighton has not gone according to plan. The Irishman has been littered with mistakes but so have the goalkeepers.

Vasilis Barkas was branded “awful” by Frank McAvennie for some of his mistakes, claiming the club’s recruitment needed to be looked at as a result. He cost £4.5m in the summer but has been shocking on a number of occasions. He conceded four against AC Milan and was especially poor for the opener, somehow letting a free-kick find the net on his side of the goal.

Scott Bain has arguably been no better. The stopper was another to have a horror show in Europe. When Celtic were battered and bruised by Sparta Prague in the Czech Republic, it was Bain who was at fault.

He let the ball roll across his six-yard box for the second goal and then for the fourth and final strike, the goalkeeper came racing out and failed to clear.

Youngster Conor Hazard has also had his difficulties. He was the hero in the Scottish Cup final back in December by saving a succession of penalties in the shoot-out. His performance in normal time, however, was shocking. He was bullied from a corner for Hearts’ second and then for their third, he came out and failed to punch; an action that led to a simple concession.

A solution?

It’s been difficult to find a solution between the sticks. Of course, losing Fraser Forster at the start of the term was a huge blow. Following his loan spell, he headed back to Southampton.

Though, they also lost another stopper in Craig Gordon. The 38-year-old was offered a new deal but would have to have taken a significant pay cut in order to stay in Glasgow.

Instead, he moved to Edinburgh to play for Hearts. He was second fiddle last season but was unquestionably better than all three of Celtic’s current options between the sticks. He has proven Peter Lawwell wrong in the last few months, demonstrating why he should have been offered far greater terms to stay.

You only need to look at words from Steven Naismith for evidence. Speaking earlier this season, the Hearts forward noted: “I said when we got him that he would be the best signing we’ve made by a country mile, just for his pure quality.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-hunt-stories-wagner-marsch-martinez-lennon-news” title=”The last stories on Celtic’s hunt for a new manager!”]

Naismith added: “He’s worth eight points a season on his own. He’s won us this semi-final – with having him in the goal we’re in the final. He played a bigger part than anybody else.”

Gordon exudes confidence and has made Hearts a better side. He has won games on his own for the Jam Tarts, something Celtic could have unquestionably benefited from this season.

After all, their goalkeeper’s have lost the Hoops a number of matches in 2020/21 alone.

West Ham’s Champions League chances quashed

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, ex-Bradford City man Dean Windass has played down West Ham’s chances of finishing in the top four.

Despite losing narrowly at Manchester City on Saturday, David Moyes’ still find themselves sitting 4th, one point clear of Chelsea and a further point ahead of Liverpool, who beat Windass’ former side Sheffield United on Sunday evening.

The Hammers face the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester City in the coming weeks, but David Moyes’ team have continued to defy the odds in recent matches – with their defeat at the Etihad Stadium just their second in the Premier League since Christmas.

Only the top-three have won more Premier League matches than West Ham this season, but Windass doesn’t believe the East Londoners can keep churning out results.

Asked whether the Hammers can sustain their current form, Windass told FFC exclusively:

“No. West Ham, another football club, you know, the new stadium. It was a great place to play at Upton Park and a great atmosphere. I’ve never been to the new stadium, but obviously played at the old one and you know, some atmosphere.

“The problem you’ve got is obviously if you don’t get the Champions League, then how do you enhance Champions League footballers to go to West Ham? They’ve had a remarkable season, and anything they get now, even if they don’t get in the Champions League, they’re pulling up trees. Can they sustain this? I’m not sure.”

There’s no two ways about it, West Ham have been outstanding this season, but Windass might well be right with his prediction.

With Chelsea having turned a corner under Thomas Tuchel and the likes of Spurs, Everton and Liverpool still in the mix for the top four, it would be some achievement if Moyes’ side were to maintain their current place in the table.

Chelsea: Tuchel update on Christensen

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has offered an update on the fitness of defender Andreas Christensen, following Wednesday’s shambolic 4-2 defeat to Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

What’s the word?

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Tuchel revealed that the Denmark international had been withdrawn at half-time against the Gunners due to injury, despite suggestion that the change had been a tactical substitution.

The 26-year-old centre-back set the wheels in motion for what was to be a bruising night for the Blues, with his tame backpass allowing Eddie Nketiah to net his first Premier League goal of the season.

Having not resurfaced for the second half, it was believed that the £31.5m-rated man had been dragged off by his manager for that error, although the former Paris Saint-Germain moved to quash that speculation, while also blaming the pitch for the player’s early error: “He said he cannot continue, so I think he had some problems. I don’t take a player out because he makes one mistake.

“To say the pitch is difficult to play here it maybe sounds like an excuse, but it is a very, very difficult pitch that we have here. It’s not in our favour.

“The ball bounces very awkwardly in front of Andreas when he wants to play this ball. But still, we had the same mistake against Real Madrid that cost us the next round of the Champions League, and this one cost us the next match. I can’t remember when we got two goals like this.”

A Blessing in Disguise

While his manager may be attempting to dig him out of a hole by targeting the home turf, there is no denying that it was a costly error from the 55-cap international, with that early blunder setting the tone for what would be a dismal defensive display all-around.

Although Christensen has since come out and taken responsibility for his high profile mistake, it will do little to appease his doubters, namely talkSPORT pundit Dean Saunders, who suggested that the £80k-per-week man is “not good enough” in the wake of the defeat.

That view was echoed by club legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who admitted that both the Dane and a handful of his teammates, simply weren’t up to scratch: “Lukaku, Christensen, Sarr and Alonso were just not good enough for a Chelsea team who should be challenging for the Champions League or Premier League.”

That may appear a rather brutal assessment, although in truth, should his injury complaint cause him to miss this weekend’s game against West Ham United, it could well prove to be something of a blessing in disguise, with the more experienced Thiago Silva likely to be a welcome addition to the side in his absence.

While not the worst performer among Tuchel’s squad this season – he currently ranks 15th for average match rating – the 6 foot 2 giant has not set the world alight either, with the player ranking in just the top 70% for tackles made among central defenders in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year, as well as ranking in just the top 44% for clearances made, as per FBref.

There are also those of a Chelsea persuasion who are simply keen to see the back of the one-time Borussia Monchengladbach loanee, amid reports that he has agreed a deal to join Barcelona this summer on a free transfer.

While the fact that the west London outfit are currently unable to offer new deals may have been a factor in that decision, supporters will no doubt be angered by the player seemingly jumping ship, particularly after he suggested last year that he was in it for the “long-run” at the club.

As they prepare for the visit of the Hammers on Sunday, his name not being mentioned on the teamsheet may prove something of a boost rather than a notable blow.

Alexander-Arnold benched, Kelleher starts: Predicted Liverpool XI to face Fulham

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Sunday and could go back top of the Premier League with a win against Fulham, depending on Tottenham Hotspur’s result against Crystal Palace earlier in the day.

A much-changed Reds side scraped a 1-1 draw against FC Midtjylland in midweek, so it seems likely that Jurgen Klopp will make plenty of changes for the trip to Craven Cottage on Sunday.

The Merseyside club have lost just once in the Premier League so far this season, so will be confident of picking up three points against a Fulham side battling relegation.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects Klopp to line his side up against Fulham, with eight changes from the side that started in Denmark…

Despite Alisson returning to training this week, the Reds might be better served keeping faith in Caoimhin Kelleher in goal, in the hope that the Brazilian is definitely fit to face Tottenham Hotspur in the top-of-the-table clash next Wednesday.

After captaining the side in midweek, Trent Alexander-Arnold drops to the bench in place of Neco Williams, as he has only just returned from injury so should be rested ahead of the game against Spurs.

The right-back was described as “out of this world” by Gary Neville earlier this year but he can still make an impact from the bench if required, rather than being risked from the start.

Joel Matip returns alongside Fabinho, as Liverpool’s youngsters struggled in the second half on Wednesday after the Brazilian was replaced, so hopefully, they will look more solid on Sunday, whilst Andy Robertson returns at left-back in place of Konstantinos Tsimikas.

In midfield, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain makes his first start of the season after recovering from injury, alongside mainstays Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijanldum.

Finally, there are two changes in attack as Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino come back in, as Klopp has suggested in his pre-match conference that Diogo Jota picked up a knock in midweek, so he’s another that should be rested if possible.

This is a must-win game for the Reds if they want to keep the pressure at the top of the table but considering the importance of next week’s game at Anfield against Tottenham, Klopp must rest players where he can against Fulham, in the hope that his players can still deliver three points.

And, in other news… LFC should cash in on “unplayable winger” in January who’s robbed Michael Edwards dry

Gerrard should axe Ianis Hagi for Old Firm

Rangers take on their Old Firm rivals at Ibrox on Sunday and Steven Gerrard should axe Ianis Hagi for the game, as the Romania international has been far from his best in recent weeks.

Although the 22-year-old has enjoyed a solid campaign overall, contributing six goals and nine assists in 29 Premiership appearances, resulting in a 6.93 average WhoScored rating, his recent performances have been nowhere near that level.

Hagi’s last goal for Rangers came in the 3-0 win against St Mirren in early March, and he has failed to contribute a goal or assist in the league since then, whilst he also struggled in the cup defeat against St Johnstone last time out before his 68th-minute withdrawal.

Indeed, as per WhoScored ratings, he hasn’t exceeded a 7/10 since the aforementioned St Mirren clash, even registering a lowly 5.95 in the recent win over Hibernian.

He is also competing with Joe Aribo on the right wing, with the Nigeria international having shown that he is capable of playing there or in central midfield at a high level this season, as his average WhoScored rating of 7.40/10 in the Premiership ranks him as the joint-second best player in Gerrard’s squad so far this campaign.

The former Charlton Athletic man was also instrumental in Rangers’ most recent win against Celtic in the Scottish Cup, as he embarrassed Diego Laxalt down the right-hand side before sending in a dangerous cross for Jonjoe Kenny to turn into his own net, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him start out wide again at Ibrox on Sunday.

Hagi, meanwhile, has regularly been left on the bench against the Hoops in the past, making just two appearances against them in his career thus far, in which he has failed to contribute a goal or an assist, so perhaps Gerrard feels that the physicality of the fixture doesn’t suit the former Genk man.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Although the manager dubbed the 22-year-old an “outstanding talent” last season after his starring performance against Braga at Ibrox, it seems as if he doesn’t trust him to be as impressive in Old Firm derbies. Given that Hagi has been pretty poor in recent weeks, Gerrard should axe him from his starting line-up on Sunday.

Obafemi has to prove himself for Saints

After returning from injury recently, Southampton striker Michael Obafemi seemingly has an ideal opportunity to prove himself to Ralph Hasenhuttl in the final few games of the Premier League season.

The Republic of Ireland U’21 international was close to joining Swansea City on loan in the January transfer window after barely featuring in the first half of the season, before an injury problem meant that the deal was called off and that he would stay at Staplewood to recover.

However, the 20-year-old has now made a full recovery and should be in contention to feature in some of Southampton’s final five Premier League fixtures which, barring an unlikely series of results from Fulham and West Brom, will have very little bearing on the Saints’ season.

Hasenhuhttl’s side look to be safe from relegation despite an awful run of form in 2021, which suggests that some of the younger players in the squad could be given opportunities to impress over the coming weeks.

Obafemi has made just two substitute appearances for the Saints this season and has seemingly fallen behind the likes of Nathan Tella and Dan N’Lundulu in the pecking order, despite having plenty of experience in the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/southampton-saints-ralph-hasenhuttl-martin-semmens-st-marys” title=”Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more”]

In total, the 20-year-old forward has made 35 appearances for the senior side at Southampton, in which he has contributed five goals and four assists, yet it seems that Hasenhuttl is not convinced by his professionalism, which might explain his lack of appearances earlier in the season.

However, now that he has returned from injury at a time where Danny Ings is currently sidelined, it seems as if he has been handed a golden chance to prove that he has the quality to play in the Premier League, and these next few games could end up defining his Southampton career.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431″]

After all, Obafemi has just one year left on his deal, and if he fails to impress in the next few weeks, he could end up departing St Mary’s ahead of next season, either on loan or permanently, which would be a shame as he has shown a lot of promise at times, notably when he became Southampton’s youngest ever scorer in the Premier League back in 2018.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl handed huge boost over £5m Saints beast dubbed “one of the best” by Guardiola
