Australia chase series win in Adelaide, India fight to stay alive

There is no rain forecast for match-day in Adelaide and the conditions are expected to be batting-friendly

Renshaw not sweating about Ashes selection

Big picture – Subplots add to the intrigueThis Australian international summer – hyped as possibly the biggest cricket season ever – started with a whimper after persistent drizzle in Perth ensured the first ODI was rather forgettable. But Australia did dominate a game that lasted less than 50 overs and they can clinch the three-game series with victory in Adelaide. While the series-opener will be erased from the memory of the fans who endured the constant rain delays – a further frustration was that it hardly rained during some breaks – there were some notable takeaways for both teams.Perhaps most pleasing for Australia was the new-ball performance from quicks Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc as they tore through India’s top order before the damp weather set in. Hazlewood, particularly, relished the extra bounce and pace on a ground that will host the first Ashes Test in a month.Related

'I hide' – Renshaw blocks out Ashes speculation

With Pat Cummins set to miss the Ashes opener, Hazlewood’s importance has grown and he looked in good physical condition in the first ODI having struggled with injuries in recent years. While the Ashes hovers over basically everything in Australia right now, winning this series is important for Australia as they look to build consistency in 50-over cricket after a patchy run.ODI debutants Matthew Renshaw and Mitchell Owen performed well as did fringe players Matt Kuhnemann and Josh Philippe in a welcome sign for the team’s depth amid a transition ahead of the 2027 World Cup.Josh Hazlewood starred with two key wickets in the opening ODI•Getty ImagesIndia, however, had very little to take out of the first ODI apart from a late cameo from debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy and an impressive new-ball spell from left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh.Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma struggled in their returns, while Shubman Gill had a rare recent failure on his ODI captaincy debut. India were rusty in their 50-over return since the Champions Trophy and it was a particularly tight turnaround for those who played in the Delhi Test against West Indies, which only finished on October 14.India will surely present a much more formidable challenge in Adelaide and they will need to if they are to force a series-decider. Like in Perth, the sellout crowd in Adelaide should be mostly filled with blue shirts to again underline India’s heft in the sport.Form guideAustralia WWLLL
India LWWWWIn the spotlight: Matthew Short and Rohit SharmaWhile those in the Ashes frame are hogging the spotlight, Matthew Short has gone under the radar given he is not part of those discussions. But Short has for some time been on the fringes of Australia’s white-ball teams, pegged back by inconsistencies and, more recently, injuries. Unlike Renshaw and Philippe, Short did not make the most of his opportunity in the first ODI, making just 8 off 17 and falling tamely to left-arm spinner Axar Patel. Short is likely to be retained at his favoured Adelaide Oval, where he has long dominated for Adelaide Strikers in the BBL. He will need to perform well with competition starting to heat up amid a transition of the batting order.Rohit Sharma succumbed under the early onslaught in Perth, nicking Hazlewood to second slip on 8. In his return to the field since the IPL, he scratched around, but did show off his trim physique with hard running between the wickets. Rohit has been working tirelessly in the Adelaide nets as he hopes to turn back the clock and alleviate some pressure amid doubts over whether he can make it to the next World Cup.3:07

Team news: Alex Carey and Zampa returnRegulars Alex Carey and Adam Zampa will return, likely at the expense of Philippe and Kuhnemann. Carey missed the opener due to Sheffield Shield duties and he will take the gloves with first-choice white-ball wicketkeeper Josh Inglis still on the sidelines with a calf injury. Zampa was unavailable in Perth owing to paternity reasons and he will squeeze out Kuhnemann, who had a rare opportunity in the XI and did well bowling in the death.Australia (possible): 1 Mitchell Marsh (capt), 2 Travis Head, 3 Matthew Short, 4 Alex Carey (wk), 5 Matthew Renshaw, 6 Cooper Connolly, 7 Mitchell Owen, 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Nathan Ellis, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Adam ZampaIndia are likely to stick with the same batting order, but question marks hover over the makeup of their attack. Left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav was unlucky to miss out in Perth although Axar and Washington Sundar – both preferred for their all-round abilities – bowled quite well, taking two of the three wickets to fall. Spinners are normally under the gun at the smaller Adelaide Oval making it an intriguing dilemma for India’s hierarchy. Prasidh Krishna’s ability to swing the new ball might get him the nod over Harshit Rana, who struggled in Perth.India (possible): 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 KL Rahul (wk), 6 Axar Patel, 7 Washington Sundar/Kuldeep Yadav, 8 Nitish Kumar Reddy, 9 Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Mohammed SirajWashington Sundar was preferred over Kuldeep Yadav in the opening ODI•PTI Pitch and conditionsThere has been rain in Adelaide in the lead-up, with the SACA ground staff using UV lights to dry the wicket ahead of the match. In a relief, no rain is forecast on Thursday, although conditions are expected to be overcast and cool. The Adelaide Oval is renowned as a batting paradise because of the shorter boundaries square of the wicket.Stats and triviaKohli needs 54 runs to move past Kumar Sangakkara and into second place on the ODI runs list. Travis Head needs 50 to reach 3000 ODI runs. Starc is five wickets away from joining Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Shane Warne as the only Australians to take 250 ODI wickets. Australia have not beaten India in an ODI in Adelaide since January 2008. India completed successful chases in the past two matches between the teams in 2011 and 2019. Southampton manager timeline confirmed as Gary O'Neil emerges as "strong contender"

Gary O’Neil is a “strong contender” for the current managerial vacancy at Southampton with a recent update sharing the latest timeline on getting a new boss through the door.

After becoming the first team in Premier League history to be relegated with as many as seven games remaining last season, Southampton hoped for a swift return to the top flight. In the summer, Will Still, who carved out a reputation for himself with Reims and Lens in Ligue 1, moved to St Mary’s.

Despite an influx of summer signings, Still struggled to make things click with the Saints, winning just two out of 13 Championship games. Following three successive defeats, Still was dismissed from his position, with under-21s coach Tonda Eckert taking interim charge of the club.

Eckert, who guided Southampton to a 2-1 win away at Queens Park Rangers, will remain in charge of the team until Southampton make a permanent appointment. Now, it would appear that the Saints could be closing in on Still’s replacement.

O'Neil to take over at Southampton?

According to Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath, O’Neil is very much in contention for the Southampton job, with “admirers at St Mary’s after his work at Bournemouth and Wolves”.

O’Neil received his first experience of senior management with Bournemouth, succeeding Scott Parker and keeping the Cherries in the top flight before being replaced by Andoni Iraola.

O’Neil’s next job was with Wolves, after the 42-year-old replaced Julen Lopetegui as the 2023/24 season began. Though he guided the club to a comfortable mid-table finish, the Englishman struggled for form in the opening chunk of the following campaign, which led to his sacking.

Wolves, who themselves are seeking a new manager following Vitor Pereira’s dismissal, were linked with bringing O’Neil back to the club, only for the manager to pull himself out of the running.

O’Neil, who shares the same agent as Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, tends to favour a 3-4-2-1 formation, which he found success with during his early days at Wolves. Such a set-up, in theory, would work well with Southampton and their current crop of players.

McGrath also reported that it is “still early in the process for Southampton” and their search for a new manager. Given his status as a free agent, O’Neil would be available immediately, which may further bolster his chances of getting the job.

Whoever takes over at Southampton will be expected to take the club towards the play-offs. Whether that person ends up being O’Neil, ultimately, remains to be seen.

Thomas Frank dealt Tottenham injury worry as star picks up knock before Arsenal

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has been dealt another injury worry ahead of his side’s looming North London derby clash with Arsenal this weekend.

Spurs travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to face their table-topping rivals in what promises to be a pivotal encounter, but Frank faces a mounting injury crisis that threatens to derail his side’s chances.

While it is still early doors, The Lilywhites appear to be pushing for a top-four place, and are currently sitting fifth with five wins, three draws, and three losses from 11 Premier League matches. Their form has been inconsistent, especially in a creative sense, with two wins, two draws, and two losses in their last six fixtures, with Frank still yet to get the best out of his squad on a consistent enough basis.

The injury situation ahead of the derby is particularly concerning. Frank confirmed that Cristian Romero should be available after being substituted late on against Man United due to fatigue, with the Dane stating he was “just done physically” after recently returning from injury.

Even more positively, Frank expressed real belief that Mohammed Kudus will be available, saying he is “very confident” despite missing recent matches against FC Copenhagen and Man United with a minor knock. Kudus even elected to stay in London and not represent Ghana in friendlies against Japan and South Korea to focus on his recovery.

However, they still face significant absences elsewhere.

James Maddison’s ACL injury may rule him out until summer 2026, while Dejan Kulusevski and Yves Bissouma continue rehabilitation from knee and ankle problems respectively. Radu Dragusin took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly over the international break as he continues his recovery from an ACL injury, so it’s very unlikely he’ll be fit enough to take part, and there are numerous other concerns.

Injury-plagued striker Dominic Solanke is also ‘unlikely’ to feature this weekend, according to reports, as he carries on battling an ankle problem after minor surgery.

Excluding their Carabao Cup win at the Emirates in 2018, Tottenham have won away to Arsenal just twice since the Premier League’s inception, with their last one in the top flight coming 14 years ago.

Tottenham’s torrid record against Arsenal on enemy turf makes for pretty grim reading as a Spurs supporter, so Frank will be hoping to have as many key players fit for the derby as possible.

Tottenham dealt another injury worry as Pape Sarr picks up 'knock'

On international duty, midfielder Pape Sarr dealt Frank another worry after he was taken off in Senegal’s 2-0 defeat to Brazil at the Emirates.

Initially, Senegal boss Pape Thiaw predicted that it wasn’t a ‘big deal’, but he’s since provided another update.

Thiaw has confirmed that Sarr did not travel with the squad to Turkey for their friendly against Kenya, instead remaining in the English capital. The manager explains that Sarr has in fact picked up a ‘knock’, which prompted them to leave him in London to undergo treatment at N17.

The midfielder’s potential absence this weekend would represent another significant blow for Frank, who already faces being without numerous key players for the derby. Sarr has already played 16 matches for Tottenham this season, bagging two goals and two assists in the top flight whilst establishing himself as a regular in Frank’s setup.

The timing of the injury is far from ideal for Spurs, and it remains unclear whether the 23-year-old will be fit in time for their clash against the Gunners.

Tottenham’s medical team will now assess the extent of the knock, with Frank hoping for positive news as he prepares his depleted squad for one of the season’s most important fixtures.

"Bad news" – Insider shares Ollie Scarles update as West Ham dealt "another injury blow"

West Ham defender Oliver Scarles was hauled off in their 2-1 loss to Leeds United with what looked to be a serious injury, and insider ExWHUemployee has now shared how long he’ll be out for.

The Hammers are second-bottom in the Premier League and have conceded more goals than any other side in the division thus far.

In his last two games, under-pressure new boss Nuno Espirito Santo has gone with a centre-back pairing of Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo, with both men struggling to deal with opposition attacks.

West Ham have precious few alternatives to Kilman and Todibo, with Konstantinos Mavropanos sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Leeds 2-1 West Ham

The Greek international, who had been selected for nearly every game since West Ham’s only victory of the campaign at Nottingham Forest, faces up to six weeks out after picking up a hamstring injury at home to Brentford (GiveMeSport).

The last thing Nuno needs is another defensive injury, but according to insider Ex, Scarles has joined Mavropanos on the sidelines with the extent of his injury revealed.

The academy graduate was deployed at full-back against Brentford and started again away to Leeds, but was forced off in the opening 20 minutes after fracturing his collarbone.

West Ham have since confirmed that the 19-year-old has undergone successful surgery on the problem, with Performance Director Richard Collinge estimating he could return in December.

However, while this is the official line from the club, insider Ex believes that Scarles could be out for even longer.

West Ham dealt Scarles blow with real return timeline revealed

Writing via his West Ham Way Patreon, Ex states that Scarles actually faces as long as three months on the sidelines — meaning the teenager might not be back in action until 2026.

The England Under-20 international seriously impressed at youth level for West Ham before breaking into the first-team — even bagging three goals and 14 assists in 50 appearances for the Under-18s.

The attack-minded full-back also notched 13 goal contributions (six goals, seven assists) for the Under-21s, with Scarles since making 19 senior cameos in total for the east Londoners.

He was clearly starting to impress Nuno too, after being given the starting nod in each of West Ham’s last two Premier League games, so this layoff will be a major blow to him personally.

It was Julen Lopetegui who handed Scarles his Premier League debut last season, with Graham Potter then using the youngster on a pretty regular basis towards the end of 2024/2025.

With Mavropanos out injured too, it represents a golden opportunity for summer signing Igor Julio to battle his way into the starting eleven.

"World-class" FA Cup-winning manager now shock Nottingham Forest candidate

A “world-class” manager has now emerged as a shock candidate to replace Ange Postecoglou as Nottingham Forest manager, following the Australian’s dismissal on Saturday.

Forest set out to appoint new manager following Ange exit

Ange only lasted a little over a month as Forest manager, which has sparked debate over whether he was given enough time, having replaced Nuno Espirito Santo at the beginning of September, before going on to implement a more attacking style.

Former defender John Curtis has since claimed it was the wrong decision to appoint the former Tottenham Hotspur boss in the first place, with Nuno enjoying a successful 2024-25 campaign, overseeing the Tricky Trees’ return to Europe.

With Ange gone, Evangelos Marinakis is now tasked with bringing in a replacement, and it could make sense to bring in a more pragmatic manager, given that the attacking philosophy didn’t produce the desired results.

The Aussie failed to win any of his eight matches in charge, which leaves the Europa League side in a precarious position, falling into the Premier League relegation zone after the 3-0 defeat at home against Chelsea on Saturday.

As such, getting the next appointment will be crucial for Marinakis, and it has now been revealed that Sean Dyche, who has a track record of guiding teams to safety, is in advanced talks about taking over as manager.

According to a report from Football Insider, however, there is an alternative option on the shortlist, with Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers emerging as a ‘shock’ new candidate for the Nottingham Forest job.

Rodgers is set to be sounded out by Forest about a move to the City Ground, with the Celtic boss out of contract at the end of the season, and the Scottish club have thus far failed to make any progress in talks about an extension.

Dyche remains the frontrunner for the job, but former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini and Fulham manager Marco Silva are also in contention.

"World-class" Rodgers could be savvy appointment for Forest

The 52-year-old is vastly experienced in the Premier League, taking charge of 204 matches as Leicester City manager, during which time he led the Foxes to victory in the 2020-21 FA Cup final, with Gabriel Agbonlahor lauding him as “world-class”.

The Northern Irishman, who won the FA Cup with Leicester, has since gone on to have another very impressive stint with Celtic, winning the Scottish Premiership and League Cup last season, meaning he has now lifted 13 trophies across a successful managerial career.

Dyche would perhaps be the safer option, having developed a reputation as a manager capable of leading relegation-threatened sides to safety, but Rodgers could be a more exciting long-term appointment, given his track record of winning trophies.

Roston Chase appointed West Indies' Test captain

His first assignment in the longest format will be the three-Test home series against Australia, which begins on his home ground in Bridgetown on June 25. Kraigg Brathwaite resigns as West Indies Test captain

CWI said that Chase had been appointed from a shortlist of six after a “detailed assessment process that included psychometric testing to evaluate leadership style, behaviour, and overall suitability for the role”. The other candidates interviewed were John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, and Warrican.Shai Hope, West Indies captain in the white-ball formats, asked not to be considered in order to focus on his existing leadership roles.”This selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken,” CWI president, Kishore Shallow, said. “I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket.”West Indies head coach, Daren Sammy, said: “I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him–we’re building something special.”The 33-year-old Chase takes over from Kraigg Brathwaite, who resigned in March after 39 matches in charge of the Test team. West Indies won 10 of those Tests, lost 22 and drew seven. At the time of Brathwaite’s resignation, CWI had handed Hope – already West Indies’ ODI captain – the T20I reins, but had held back on naming a new Test captain, announcing that they would do so “in the coming weeks”.

Brathwaite’s tenure was notable for a young West Indies team beginning to find ways of winning in different conditions with a growing pool of fast and spin bowlers. Notable performances included a 1-0 home series win over England in 2022, the Gabba Test win of January 2024, and a 1-1 draw in Pakistan in Brathwaite’s last series in charge, in January 2025.Chase has scored 2265 runs at an average of 26.33, with five hundreds, and taken 85 wickets with his offspin at 46.00. One of his first tasks as captain will be to repair his batting numbers, which have fallen steadily following a promising start. He made a century in just his second Test, to help save the Jamaica Test against India in 2016, and scored two more over his first 10 Tests, across which he averaged 48.53. Since then, however, his numbers have declined significantly.CWI announced Chase’s appointment via X, formerly Twitter, and said it had been “unanimously approved by the CWI Board of Directors” during a meeting on Friday.

Chelsea flop is now in danger of becoming just another Mudryk

It wasn’t a vintage performance, but Chelsea managed to get the job done and pick up all three points against Benfica on Tuesday night.

José Mourinho was denied a fairytale return to Stamford Bridge as Enzo Maresca’s side ran out 1-0 winners and picked up their first points in the Champions League this season.

There were some impressive showings from the likes of Pedro Neto, who was a constant threat out wide, and even Robert Sanchez, who made several saves to keep his side in the game early on.

However, there were also some underwhelming ones, especially from one recent signing who is starting to show shades of Mykhailo Mudryk.

Mudryk's Chelsea nightmare

Back in January 2023, the Chelsea fan base was ecstatic at the £89m signing of Mudryk from Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

After all, here was a player London rivals Arsenal were seemingly desperate to sign, and they’d just managed to nab him from right under their noses.

Moreover, in the winger’s first game for the club, when he came off the bench at Anfield, he looked electric, constantly beating his opposite number for pace and with brilliant close control.

In fact, it was such an impressive debut from the young dynamo that Gary Neville claimed that he “wouldn’t like to play against him!”

However, that short cameo against the Reds was as good as it got for the 24-year-old that season, as he ended the campaign with just two assists to his name in 17 appearances for the Blues, and with fans and pundits alike questioning his ability.

Things didn’t get much better for the international ace the following season, as in 41 appearances, he scored seven goals and provided four assists, which isn’t anywhere near good enough for someone who cost as much as he did.

Then, in October of last season, as if he wasn’t getting enough stick, Maresca told the press that he was a “slow” learner, which only lends credence to Jason Cundy’s claim that he “doesn’t have football IQ.”

Unfortunately, things somehow got even worse for the player and the club as he was provisionally suspended after failing a drugs test in December, and was then charged by the FA in June, which could see him handed a four-year ban.

In all, Mudryk has to go down as one of Chelsea’s worst-ever signings, and while there isn’t anybody else in the squad facing quite the same magnitude of issue he is, there is someone who is looking as ineffective on the pitch.

The Chelsea player who could be another Mudryk

So, while there are a few players who are flattering to deceive at Chelsea this season, only one can be compared to Mudryk.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Unfortunately for him, that player is Jamie Gittens, who arrived at the club from Borussia Dortmund for around £48m this summer.

Now, it should be said that, as he is still young and showed glimpses of real brilliance here and there last season, there is every chance he could come good and flourish in West London.

However, as things stand, and most Blues fans will attest, he has looked miles off the pace this season.

For example, the Englishman has made six appearances so far, three of which have been starts, and he’s yet to score or assist a goal.

Moreover, it’s not as if he’s been up against world-class opposition every game, as he started against Lincoln City last week and was so bad that he failed to have even one shot on target against the League One side.

It was more of the same when he came on against Benfica on Tuesday, as even though he had over 30 minutes to make some sort of impact against the Portuguese side, he looked as lost as he has in every other game.

It’s the way in which he loses the ball, makes the wrong decisions and generally brings attacks to an end that makes it impossible to ignore the Mudryk comparisons.

On top of that, the displays have been so subpar that the fans already seem to be losing patience, with one content creator describing him as “shockingly bad.”

While it sounds harsh, that’s not really an overreaction to his display against Jose’s side, as he failed in two of three dribbles, misplaced 100% of his crosses, lost 50% of his duels, lost the ball with every other touch and completed just three passes in total.

Ultimately, Gittens might still come good for Chelsea, but at the moment, he looks more likely to be another Mudryk-esque winger.

Sultana, Moni fifties help Bangladesh register their highest successful ODI chase

Bangladesh completed their highest successful chase in ODIs and surged to the top of the women’s World Cup Qualifier points table with a two-wicket victory over Ireland. Chasing 236, Ritu Moni’s career-best unbeaten 67 off 61 balls helped Bangladesh recover from 94 for 5 and then 186 for 8 to win the match with eight balls to spare.Moni and No.10 batter Nahida Akter shared an unbroken 54-run stand off just 34 balls, the highest for Bangladesh for the ninth wicket in ODIs and left Ireland all but out of contention for the qualifiers. Bangladesh are now on four points along with Pakistan and Scotland, and ahead on net run-rate while Ireland are fifth and winless. They have lost all three of the matches they’ve played so far.Ireland will be gutted after they gave their best account of themselves with the bat, crossed 200 for the first time in the tournament and had Bangladesh on the ropes early on. Orla Prendergast’s double strike in her first spell dismissed Farghana Hoque for a duck and Ishma Tanjim stunningly caught at first slip for 2. Bangladesh were 2 for 2 in the fifth over and stumbling.Sharmin Akhter and the ever-reliable Nigar Sultana, fresh off a first century in the format against Thailand, steadied things with a 52-run third wicket stand but they were separated when Laura Delany hit Sharmin on the front pad and had her lbw. Sobhana Mostary only scored 7 but Bangladesh looked down and out in the 26th over when Sultana was caught behind off Jane Macquire after completing her sixth ODI half-century. Moni, new to the crease, was on just 4 at the time and had already been dropped once, on 0.Ireland, who put down six catches against West Indies, would be left to regret their fielding blunders as Moni went on to punish them. She put on 45 with Fahima Khatun, who was bowled by Ava Canning for 28. When Jannatul Ferdus and Rabeya Khan were dismissed in the space of 16 deliveries, Bangladesh’s fate appeared sealed but Moni never gave up.She was strong on either side square of the wicket and down the ground and kept her composure, even with a required run-rate of more than seven an over in the dying phases. Moni reached fifty in the 48th over, off the 56th ball she faced, and she should have been out. She swiped Arlene Kelly to Macquire at square leg but hit the ball hard and flat and Macguire parried the ball over her head.Nigar Sultana scored 51 to guide her team in the 236-chase•BCB

The drama was not over as Moni received treatment for what seemed to be a cramp of the calf muscle, with Bangladesh 14 runs away from victory from 14 balls. She resumed batting with renewed focus, hit the next ball for four and got the equation down to nine runs needed off the last 12 balls. Moni sealed the win with a six to leave Ireland wondering what more they could do to get a win in this tournament. They recovered from the early run-out of Sarah Forbes as Gaby Lewis and Amy Hunter put on 50 for the second wicket. Ferdus, who took five wickets in her third ODI against Thailand, was at it again and caught Lewis off a leading edge off her own bowling. Hunter was run out when she tried to push for two after hitting the ball into the leg side but Mostary ran from deep mid-wicket to gather the ball and fired in a strong throw to Sultana. Hunter was short of her ground.Prendergast and Delany put on 72 runs for the fourth wicket and the latter went on to a fourth ODI half-century but then Ireland fell away. They lost 4 for 41 and legspinner Rabeya picked up 3 for 39. Still, Bangladesh needed to score more runs than they’ve ever done before to win an ODI. Their previous highest successful chase was 211 at the same ground six years ago. Nahida was batting at the end on that occasion too.Sarah Bryce top-scored for Scotland•ICC/Getty Images

Scotland defeat Thailand in low-scoring match

In the earlier match, Scotland notched up a second win in the campaign by defending 206 against Thailand in a low-scoring match at the LCCA.Scotland were once again held together by captain Kathryn Bryce, who scored her second successive half-century, and the sixth of her ODI career. She is now the competition’s top run-scorer. Bryce was supported by Ailsa Lister’s run-a-ball 38, and the pair shared in a 67-run fourth-wicket stand which was the most profitable of the innings. Despite a lower order collapse that saw Scotland go from 141 for 4 to 206 all out, Megan McColl combined with the lower order for her first ODI fifty.Thailand’s spinners were responsible for Scotland losing six for 65 as left-arm spinner Thipatcha Putthawong and offspinner Onnicha Kamchomphu claimed six wickets between them. The delivery of the innings belonged to legspinner Suleeporn Laomi who bowled Katherine Fraser with a ball that pitched on middle and leg and straightened to take out middle stump.Thailand had a decent start to the chase with a first-wicket stand of 41 but lost both openers in the same over. Rachel Slater had Nattaya Boochatham trapped lbw and then bowled Chanida Sutthiruang with a ball that tailed in from legstump and beat her flick. In her next over, Slater’s full length was too good for Nannapat Koncharoenkai and beat her expansive drive to hit middle and leg stump and leave Thailand reeling on 46 for 36.From there, it was all spin and Natthakan Chantham, who held up her end while Abtaha Maqsood and Fraser plucked wickets at the other end. None of the Thai batters from No. 5 down got into double figures but Chantham, playing in her 11th ODI, brought up 500 runs in the format and reached a sixth half-century.She was strong on the sweep and excellent with her feet but in the dying stages of the innings advanced on Maqsood and was bowled. Maqsood finished with figures of 3 for 26 from six overs and Fraser, who ended the game when Kamchomphu was caught at extra cover, picked up 3 for 28.Scotland are level with Pakistan and Bangladesh on points but have played one more game and have a negative run rate. Chelsea submit £43m bid for defender who's "as good as Van Dijk and Saliba"

Chelsea have now received a response after submitting a £43m offer for a defender who’s “as good as Van Dijk and Saliba”, according to a report.

Blues looking to strengthen at centre-back

Although his side were unable to pick up all three points against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Enzo Maresca will be pleased that his side managed to keep a clean sheet, with the centre-back partnership of Josh Acheampong and Trevoh Chalobah holding firm.

The duo made a combined 17 defensive actions to keep Palace at bay, with both players also showcasing their ability in possession of the ball, averaging pass-completion rates of over 90%.

However, there may be some doubts over whether the Blues’ defence is good enough to mount a serious Premier League title challenge, with Acheampong still only 19-years-old, while Chalobah remains relatively inexperienced at the top level.

Their own Eze: £61m superstar now "only wants" to sign for Chelsea

The incredible international could be an Eze-like signing for Chelsea and Enzo Maresca.

With Levi Colwill also sidelined for the foreseeable future due to an ACL injury, it would make sense to get another centre-back through the door, and an offer has been made for a Serie A defender.

That is according to a report from Gazzetta, which states Chelsea have tabled a €50m (£43m) bid for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, which was ‘politely declined’ by the Italian.

The Blues are not the only Premier League club to have expressed an interest in Bastoni, with Newcastle United also coming forward over a potential deal, but the defender remains focused on Inter’s upcoming campaign.

That said, another approach from one of the interested English clubs isn’t ruled out, suggesting that a deal could still be possible later in the window.

Bastoni could be on Van Dijk and Saliba's level

The 26-year-old is held in very high regard by presenter and analyst Nieve Petruzziello, who claimed he was “as good as Van Dijk and Saliba” last season.

The Italy international is also extremely comfortable in possession of the ball, as showcased by his passing and dribbling ability, which has regularly been on display over the course of the past year.

The Inter star’s passing ability, coupled with the fact he is used to playing in a back three, could make him an ideal addition to Maresca’s squad, given that the Chelsea boss often implements a three-at-the-back system.

As such, it is disappointing the Blues’ opening offer was rejected, but a move later in the window has not been ruled out, and it could be worth submitting an improved bid for the centre-back.
