Sandro Tonali: Newcastle could sign "elite" £74m replacement

Newcastle United are likely to continue to strengthen their thriving squad in 2024 after rising to prominence under Eddie Howe's leadership over the past two years.

Currently impressing in the Champions League after a fourth-placed Premier League finish last year, the Magpies are among Europe's most opulent outfits following the PIF club takeover.

And while great strides have been made, St. James' Park has been rocked by revelations surrounding summer signing Sandro Tonali, who might be facing a lengthy suspension.

Because of this, plans for defensive reinforcements might need to be shelved in the short term, with the emphasis focussed on enhancing the midfield.

Who are Newcastle interested in signing?

United added some eye-catching new faces to the mix in the summer, but didn't touch the central defence despite much discussion regarding the matter.

perr-schuurs-sven-botman-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

That's hardly to say that the backline needed major surgery, Newcastle had just enjoyed their best Premier League season in two decades, let's not forget, and did so with the joint-best defence of the campaign, conceding 33 goals alongside champions Manchester City.

But names such as Goncalo Inacio and Joachim Andersen were regularly touted, and will likely enter transfer circulation once again as the winter transfer window looms closer.

That being said, it does indeed appear to be the bolstering of the midfield that is taking precedence, with a host of names reportedly being considered by Howe and technical director Dan Ashworth.

Arsenal's Emile Smith Rowe could join the Toon having last started in the Premier League in the 2021/22 season, while Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips is reportedly assessing his options having failed to make his mark since joining from Leeds United for £45m in 2022.

And whether Newcastle opt for an industrious option in light of the Tonali news or whether some fresh flair is injected, the options are wide-ranging for this burgeoning squad.

As such, Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz is attracting the club's attention, with Spanish outlet Sport – via Sport Witness – claiming that the Magpies are set to battle Manchester City for the German's signature.

His services would not come cheap, with United required to shatter their transfer record for the 20-year-old, who is valued at around €85m (£74m).

While not like-for-like, Wirtz would be a worthy replacement for Tonali, should his breach of betting laws prove to shackle him to the sidelines for an extended period.

Is Sandro Tonali facing a suspension?

Tonali signed for Newcastle from Italian side AC Milan in the summer for roughly £55m, having won the 2021/22 Serie A title and since earned praise from Howe for his "magnificent" level of performance.

Scoring on his debut against Aston Villa was a fantastic feat but probably not what he hopes to be the apotheosis of his career at St. James' Park, but now embroiled in a betting scandal, it could be some time before he is clear to fully grow into his skin.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney was banned from all football-related activity for eight months in May after admitting to 232 breaches, with his suspension culminating on January 16, 2024.

As per Sky Sports, 'Tonali is likely to face a lesser, but still lengthy ban for his help with the investigation – and for admitting his guilt.'

While he is free to train and play until a verdict is reached, which will not be immediately forthcoming; regardless, the chances of avoiding suspension are infinitesimal and Howe will now need to accelerate the urgency of a new midfield signing.

Wirtz is not a No.6 or even really a No.8, but Tonali is capable of playing both deep and higher in the midfield, and Wirtz could be the perfect signing to complement the current industrious crop.

How good is Florian Wirtz?

Noted for his "phenomenal" composure and precocity by Jonathan Tah, Wirtz has already demonstrated his steely mentality after recovering from a lengthy ACL injury and posting four goals and eight assists from only 19 starts.

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.

This season, he has already bagged three goals and four assists from ten games, primarily playing in an offensive and central midfield placement.

Such a presence would be perfect for Newcastle, acting as a conduit between the thirds and threading together the squad with rapier-sharp precision and technical prowess.

The £42k-per-week machine ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 1% for passes attempted, the top 4% for progressive passes and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

Such “elite” creative capacity – as has been claimed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – puts him in good stead to blossom into one of the finest playmakers in the game (if he isn't already), and would likely place him above the likes of James Maddison, who was pursued by Newcastle in the summer.

Having signed for Tottenham Hotspur from Leicester City for £40m in June, the creative midfielder has already chalked up two goals and five assists in the top flight, winning August's Premier League Player of the Month.

james-maddison-tottenham-hotspur-newcastle-united-transfer-atletico-madrid-kieran-trippier

And while Maddison, aged 26, ranks among the top 1% of positional peers for assists and shot-creating actions and the top 6% for progressive passes per 90, Wirtz is young and talented enough to eclipse his level in six years, or maybe sooner.

Prodigy. Generational talent. Turns of phrase that perhaps are a bit hackneyed at this stage and are attributed to too many rising prospects.

But Wirtz is undoubtedly a bona fide revelation for Bayer Leverkusen and there are few players to boast a ceiling so high. Should he reach his potential having made the move to Tyneside, the dynamo has the skills to become one of the club's greatest playmakers.

Fabrizio Romano says "expensive player" would "love" to join Man Utd

Manchester United are eyeing a move to sign an "expensive player" who would now "love to join", according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd transfer news – defender

The Red Devils were busy in the summer and made a number of new signings, splashing the cash on three big-money moves for Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

However, the club didn’t invest heavily in a new marquee centre-back and Harry Maguire ended up remaining at Old Trafford, leaving the England international to rival the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans for a starting spot.

With the January window fast approaching, though, a new defender was reportedly Man Utd's top transfer priority in 2024. The likes of Jean-Clair Todibo and Goncalo Inacio have been linked, although recent Man Utd transfer reports claimed moves for the top targets were off the table due to limited Old Trafford resources.

In a new Jean-Clair Todibo transfer update, though, Romano, relayed by United in Focus, said that the centre-back would still “love” to make a move to Old Trafford and remains a player of interest to those at the club.

“Todibo is a player in the list of Manchester United already since June, July, they had very positive conversations on player side.

“From what I’m hearing still now, the ideas not changed, Todibo would love to join Manchester United. He’s really attracted by the opportunity to play in the Premier League. He’s an expensive player. He remains a player appreciated by United’s scouring department… not the only one.”

Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo.

Jean-Clair Todibo profiled

Todibo is an out-and-out centre-back who appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high valuation of €30m. The France international began on the books with Toulouse but made the switch to Barcelona in 2019. (Jean-Clair Todibo profile – Transfermarkt)

However, the defender struggled to make an impact at the Nou Camp and was sent out on loan to Schalke, Benfica and Nice before making a move permanent in 2021.

Since then, the player has made more than 100 appearances for his current employers, featuring heavily in the last two seasons and also making his international debut back in September. (Jean-Clair Todibo stats – Transfermarkt)

German legend Lothar Matthaus has also hailed Todibo in the past, previously saying:

"Todibo is the best centre back I’ve seen in a long time.”

United haven’t had much luck at the back this season with injuries to the likes of Varane and Martinez, so looking at a move for Todibo appears to make sense, and with the player seemingly keen, it could be one to watch heading into the New Year.

Pep identifies £62m star as top Man City target in key area; contact made

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has now identified a £62m star as his top summer target in a key position, and contact has already been made to discuss a deal, according to a report.

Man City planning summer rebuild

Man City spent big in the January transfer window, with the likes of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez arriving at the Etihad Stadium, but Guardiola may feel some more additions are needed if his side are to bridge the gap to Liverpool.

The Reds took a huge step towards winning the Premier League title with a 2-0 victory on Sunday, opening up an 11-point gap on Arsenal, and they now find themselves 20 points clear of City, indicating a summer rebuild is needed at the Etihad Stadium.

There could be a changing of the guard, with Kevin De Bruyne close to agreeing a move to San Diego FC, while Kyle Walker is in line to join AC Milan on a permanent basis, and there has also been speculation about Ederson’s future.

According to a report from Foot Mercato, Guardiola has now identified their top target to replace Ederson, namely FC Porto’s Diogo Costa, with bringing in a new goalkeeper deemed to be a priority.

Costa is City’s first-choice target for the summer, and all the indications point towards him making a move to England this summer, having been sounded out by several top clubs from the Premier League.

The reigning Premier League champions are seemingly among the main potential suitors, having already made contact to discuss a deal.

Costa could be Europe's "most hidden secret"

The Portugal international, who has a release clause of €75m (£62m), starred for his national side at Euro 2024, saving three penalties in a penalty shootout victory against Slovenia in the round of 16, and he received high praise for his performance from teammate Diogo Dalot.

“I think Portugal’s secret is Diogo Costa. Diogo Costa is the most hidden secret in European football and today he showed up.

“Today I think he reached a completely different level. The one-on-one situation was incredible. Then he had the focus to make three consecutive saves. We have to be very proud of him.”

Portugal'sDiogoCosta

There are also signs the 25-year-old could be a good fit in a Guardiola system, given his willingness to get on the ball, ranking in the 95th percentile for touches per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

As such, it is promising news that Man City have set out to sign Costa in the summer, but it would of course be sad to see Ederson move on, given the influential role the Brazilian has played in City’s era of dominance.

Liverpool: Klopp once wanted to sign £62m star, now he’s struggling at Everton

There is little, if any, doubt that Jurgen Klopp has been a sensational manager for Liverpool since he arrived on Merseyside during the 2015/16 campaign.

The German head coach has won the Premier League, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup, and the League Cup once each over the last eight years.

He has brought plenty of success to the club, including their first Premier League title, and deserves plenty of praise for the way he has got the team competing at the top of the game again.

Whilst the ex-Borussia Dortmund tactician has not been blessed with an unlimited transfer budget throughout his time in England so far, Klopp has been able to make a number of big-money signings to bolster his squad.

However, one lavish addition that the German boss will be thankful he did not go through with was the potential signing of Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal in the summer of 2022.

Were Liverpool interested in Arnaut Danjuma?

Liverpool were keen on the Netherlands international that year as the player himself revealed that he had been told that Klopp and the Reds were tracking his performances for the Spanish side during the 2021/22 campaign.

The Daily Mail reported that Manchester United had been scouting the forward ahead of the summer transfer window in 2022 and claimed that the player had a release clause of £62m, which was included in his contract that was due to expire in 2026.

Their article claimed that Danjuma had earned comparisons to Paris Saint-Germain winger Kylian Mbappe due to his pace and direct play as a right-footed player who predominantly plays off the left side.

Former Villarreal forward Arnaut Danjuma.

Klopp's interest in the attacker came after his stunning displays for Villarreal throughout the 2021/22 season, as he showcased his ability as a big threat at the top end of the pitch.

Danjuma, who had been signed from Championship side Bournemouth in 2021, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.97 across 23 LaLiga outings that term.

He started 17 of those matches and contributed with an impressive ten goals and three assists from a wide position, which is an average of one goal involvement every 1.31 games.

The Dutch wizard, who ex-Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips hailed as a "nightmare" for defenders, also proved his worth at Champions League level with six goals and one assist in ten starts for the Spanish outfit, which suggested that he was able to consistently deliver quality at the very top level.

This means that he ended the season with 16 goals and four assists in 27 starts across those two competitions and this shows that Danjuma was a constant threat for Villarreal in the final third with his ability to score and assist goals on a regular basis.

Who did Liverpool sign instead of Danjuma?

Liverpool and Klopp ultimately opted against a move for the ex-Cherries star and swooped to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica to improve the attacking options at the club.

The Uruguay international enjoyed a respectable first season at Anfield as he plundered 15 goals and four assists in 42 matches for the club in all competitions, which included nine goals and three assists in 19 Premier League starts.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez.

Nunez had a fair case to be frustrated with his teammates for his low assist tally as the 24-year-old attacker created 11 'big chances' for his fellow attackers, only to be rewarded with three assists.

His form for the Reds last term came after he racked up an outstanding 34 goals and four assists in 41 matches in all competitions for Benfica throughout the 2021/22 campaign.

Whilst Nunez was unable to replicate his ridiculous scoring rate for the Portuguese side after his move to England, the former Almeria ace was still able to score and create goals at a respectable rate.

What happened to Danjuma?

Whereas, Danjuma's 2021/22 form fell off a cliff as the former Bournemouth man struggled during the first half of the following season with Villarreal.

He scored two goals and failed to provide a single assist, along with zero 'big chances' created, in ten LaLiga matches, and that led to a loan move to Tottenham Hotspur for the second half of the campaign.

The 26-year-old scored one goal and only created one chance, which had an xG of 0.06, in nine Premier League outings for Spurs at the start of this year.

Former Spurs forward Arnaut Danjuma.

His dreadful form for Villarreal and Tottenham throughout the 2022/23 season, which included three goals and zero assists in 19 league matches, resulted in another loan move for the current campaign.

Everton completed the season-long loan signing of the Dutch international during the recent summer transfer window and the left winger has struggled since his move to the Toffees.

How much is Danjuma worth now?

At the time of writing (09/10/2023), FootballTransfers has placed his Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at €10.8m (£9.3m) and this is a staggering fall from the £62m release clause that he had at the time of Liverpool's interest in his services.

Danjuma has not been able to recapture his immense form in the 2021/22 campaign and has not hit the ground running at Goodison Park this season.

The 26-year-old flop has scored two goals and failed to provide a single assist in nine appearances in all competitions for the Toffees so far, which includes one goal in seven Premier League outings.

Everton forward Arnaut Danjuma.

He has averaged a dismal Sofascore rating of 6.69, which is the 14th-highest score within their squad, and created zero 'big chances' in those seven league games.

Danjuma was an unused substitute for their recent 3-0 win over Bournemouth and this illustrates just how poorly the last 12 months or so have gone for the attacker.

The former Villarreal star has gone from being linked with a move to Liverpool and being compared to Mbappe to sitting on the bench for 90 minutes for Everton, who are 16th in the Premier League table.

Therefore, Klopp and Liverpool avoided a big blunder by opting to go with Nunez ahead of Danjuma one year ago as the Uruguay international, despite not being as prolific as his Benfica days, has offered far more to the Reds than the Netherlands international has for Everton, or Spurs last season.

Siraj, Iyer, Bawne shine as rain holds sway

India A have clinched the two-match series 1-0 after a well-fought second unofficial Test ended in a wet draw

The Report by Sreshth Shah in Alur13-Aug-20181:28

‘Captaincy gets the best out of me’ – Iyer

Only 58 overs were possible on the final day, but with seven wickets falling it was yet another day dominated by the bowlers. With the post-tea rain not subsiding, India A captain Shreyas Iyer and South Africa A’s stand-in captain Dane Piedt shook hands two hours before scheduled stumps, and shared the honours of the well-fought second unofficial Test in Alur. India won the series 1-0, riding on the tight victory in Bengaluru last week, where the hosts won the game with only seven deliveries remaining on the last day.The standout performances on Monday were all from the hosts. In the morning, Mohammed Siraj’s double-wicket blow bowled South Africa out for 319, after they had added only 25 to their overnight score. Then Iyer and Ankit Bawne scored classy half-centuries in the afternoon to rescue India following three early wickets. Siraj finished with figures of 4 for 72 while it was Bawne’s second half-century of the match.Hanuma Vihari, who made 148 in the first innings, could not repeat that performance in the second, trapped lbw off Duanne Olivier for zero. Olivier had also removed Prithvi Shaw in the third over, his leg stump flattened by a full delivery. Olivier was the standout among the South Africa bowlers, capping off his 6 for 63 in the first innings with figures of 2 for 24 in the second.India, starting their second innings with a slender lead, were rocked early with Olivier’s wickets, which left them reeling at 14 for 2. Mayank Agarwal – who scored a duck in the first innings – then combined with Iyer in a 40-run partnership before Agarwal’s stumps were cleaned up by offspinner Senuran Muthusamy. Then Iyer built another partnership with No. 5 Bawne, the pair adding 94 in 117 deliveries. Srikar Bharat then made a patient, unbeaten 18 alongside Bawne, and when tea was called, India were 207 ahead. India opted to bat on after the break, but the rain came down as soon as they made their way to the middle, and soon after that the game was called off. After the match, Iyer said India had no intention of declaring, for two reasons: first, that they knew the weather forecast wasn’t promising and second, their 1-0 series lead.”We were not going for victory,” Iyer said. “Yesterday itself we knew it wasn’t going to be a full day. Yes, I was contemplating which bowler to give certain situations, but we chose not to go for it because of the early wickets lost.”In this situation, it didn’t demand us to take risk, because we were 1-0 up. The pressure was on them, and they weren’t showing any glimpse of going for the win, so we decided to play it easy and bat the whole day.”India A’s next four-day contest will be against Australia A in Visakhapatnam, and before that will play a one-day quadrangular tournament also involving India B, South Africa A and Australia A in Vijayawada next week.

Nasir Jamshed banned for ten years on corruption charges

Pakistan batsman Nasir Jamshed has been banned for ten years after an independent anti-corruption tribunal found him guilty of five of the seven breaches of the PCB’s anti-corruption code he had been charged on.In a short verdict, the three-man tribunal ruled on Friday that apart from suspension from playing any level of cricket, a player found to be in breach of the anti-corruption code should also be ineligible from holding any management roles in Pakistan cricket for life. This is the second punishment for Jamshed in the last two years. In December 2017, Jamshed was banned for a year by the PCB after an anti-corruption tribunal found him guilty of non-cooperation in the 2017 PSL spot-fixing case. Jamshed had been the third player to come under the PCB’s radar when they had begun investigations into corruption in early 2017 and had been arrested in the UK in February 2017.Jamshed’s one-year ban only ended earlier this year, in April, following which PCB charged him with seven violations of their anti-corruption code. Jamshed responded by rejecting the charges levelled against him, pushing the PCB to form a tribunal headed by retired judge Justice Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan, and including former cricketer Aaqib Javed and Supreme Court advocate Shahzaib Masood as members.Jamshed, according to the PCB, was the “linchpin” connecting several corruption cases. Considered a central figure in the corruption scandal, Jamshed faced charges of approaching and soliciting other players for fixing. The verdict today finally wrapped up the saga that arose from the spot-fixing scandal in the PSL in 2017.In separate proceedings, the National Crime Agency (NCA) in England is also involved in investigations emanating from the allegations of the spot-fixing case. Early in the case, the NCA had arrested – and subsequently released – Jamshed. However NCA reportedly hasn’t yet reached a conclusion in their investigation yet. The PCB, during proceedings, heard from an NCA official on Skype as one of the witnesses, but the agency didn’t offer any evidence against the player. At least one part of the evidence against Jamshed was a collection of WhatsApp voice recordings allegedly between Jamshed and others also implicated in the case; these recordings were also leaked to the media. The PCB prosecution, however, mainly acted on the testimonials in which they treated Jamshed as the axis who was enticing players into the fixing web.”PSL 2017’s fixing trial has concluded,” the PCB lawyer Tafazzul Rizvi said after the verdict. “There are a few cases you really don’t rejoice after winning; instead you feel sad about it because it ends with another career destroyed. It’s painful to see a player who didn’t have his conduct right and didn’t fulfil his responsibilities according the anti-corruption code of conduct. Our stance from the first day was he was the linchpin and he is the one who recruited players.”Our point was proved and accepted by the tribunal, and they found him guilty on multiple charges. Even if he returns after rehabilitation, he is not allowed to be engage in any cricket management role and will be kept him away from cricket. We also suggested his name be added in a list of persons mentioned in anti-corruption lectures who are to be avoided by the players. So this all ends here.”Jamshed’s lawyer, Hasan Warraich, did not appear in front of the tribunal on Friday, and wasn’t available to speak to the media afterwards. It is not yet clear whether Jamshed intends to appeal the verdict. His wife, Samara Afzal, put out a statement on Twitter, bemoaning many “failings of the case”. She said she would accept Jamshed’s guilt if it was ruled as such in a British court of law, but if he was exonerated, she would “drag the PCB through every court in the UK if necessary to get justice”.Jamshed is the sixth Pakistan player to be punished in the wake of the PSL spot-fixing case in 2017, and received the heaviest punishment. Previously, Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Irfan and Shahzaib Hasan were all fined and banned on separate charges. Jamshed last played for Pakistan at the 2015 World Cup.
