Tottenham considering move to sign “nightmare” player in swap with Rodon

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a swap deal which could see them sign a new forward whilst sending Joe Rodon in the opposite direction, according to reports.

Latest on Joe Rodon's future

Over the summer, Rodon joined Leeds United on a season-long loan and it’s fair to say that he’s been a regular feature of their squad this season having made 12 starts out of the 16 Championship games so far (WhoScored – Rodon stats), although there is no option to buy in the agreement that the two parties reached.

However, Ben Davies recently admitted that the defender is loving life at his new home, so he could try to leave for good by making his move permanent next summer, and Ange Postecoglou could receive a player from the second tier in return.

The Elland Road outfit’s left-winger Wilfried Gnonto was a player who chiefs were keeping an eye on during the last transfer window, and whilst a deal failed to come to fruition before the deadline, they might have the opportunity to take a second bite of the cherry.

The Italy international previously handed in a transfer request and was refusing to play for Daniel Farke amid links to rivals Everton in the Premier League, so with an exit looking likely next year, the 20-year-old could be on his way to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs considering move for Wilfried Gnonto

According to reports (via CaughtOffside), Tottenham are contemplating a swoop for Gnonto next year. The Lilywhites are keen to strike a deal for the attacker who is believed to want out in January, and it's claimed that the hierarchy could look to finalise a move with Leeds that would see them secure the permanent services of Rodon, something which they would surely be tempted to look at.

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Gnonto is a real "nightmare" to play against

Whilst Tottenham may not appreciate Gnonto’s recent behaviour off the pitch, there’s no doubt that he is capable of performing to a high standard on it having clocked up 10 goal involvements, five goals and the same number of assists, in 39 senior appearances since putting pen to paper at Leeds (Transfermarkt – Gnonto stats).

The Verbania native, who is sponsored by Puma, also currently ranks in the 99th percentile for progressive carries so he appears to love to hold onto the ball and push his team as high up the pitch as possible (FBRef – Gnonto stats), an attribute that could suit Postecoglou’s style of play in terms of pressing the opposition's backline.

Farke’s £20k-per-week earner (Leeds salaries), is even a versatile operator having been deployed in seven different positions over the grass since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and even three roles in the midfield, making him a useful option to have in the building.

With Rodon not receiving game time at Spurs, Daniel Levy and Johan Lange sanctioning his sale could be the right decision to make, and if they can recruit Gnonto, who is a “nightmare” for defenders, in return, as hailed by football scout Jacek Kulig, it may well be a smart coup.

West Ham now given real Timo Werner encouragement after making contact

West Ham have been given a spot of encouragement after making first contact to sign a Champions League-winning striker for manager David Moyes.

Steidten chasing new striker in January

As widely reported, the east Londoners could be set for a busy January window as technical director Tim Steidten and the board work on targets for next month.

"Zero expectation" star stays at club as Moyes looks to seal West Ham deal

He’s been in red hot form this season.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 13, 2023

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, speaking to CaughtOffside earlier this week, shared his expectation that West Ham will be active when the winter transfer market opens for business.

“I expect West Ham to be busy in January as they’re looking at opportunities around, though it’s still too early to say anything about specific names. The owners and directors are working on it," said Romano.

Another very reliable source, club insider ExWHUemployee, claimed last month that a striker is chief among West Ham's top January priorities. The Irons, as highlighted by Michail Antonio's recent injury, are desperately short of options in that position with both Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus used as makeshift options this season.

Jarrod Bowen

2023 signing Danny Ings appears out of favour at the London Stadium right now, and as things stand, the former Southampton striker looks set to go down as yet another failed forward transfer for West Ham. The club also failed to replace Gianluca Scamacca in the summer, who is now scoring consistently for new club Atalanta in Serie A.

All of this makes bringing in a new number nine absolutely imperative for Moyes, especially as the Scotsman looks to ease pressure on his precarious position at West Ham.

West Ham given Werner hope after "first contacts"

One forward option who's been repeatedly linked lately is RB Leipzig ace Timo Werner, who won the Champions League with former club Chelsea in 2021.

Werner has found life difficult since returning to Leipzig from Stamford Bridge, though, with a host of Premier League clubs looking to take advantage. Specifically, the Germany international is being courted by Man United, Crystal Palace, Fulham and West Ham. That is according to Fussball Transfers, who also say West Ham have made "first contacts" for Werner.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The 27-year-old, as Moyes' side make an approach, is now "thinking about a change of air" mid-season in what will be viewed as a real bit of encouragement from West Ham's perspective. Little else is added beyond that, but there is a belief are now "dealing with personnel" – which presumably means the player's representatives.

While his spell at Chelsea was largely one to forget, Werner was praised by former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell as an attacker who gets into "unbelievable positions" (Football Insider).

"Werner is a very good player," said Campbell on Werner during his Chelsea stay. “The problem is, I think he needs a change. He needs to get out of that spotlight. He needs to go somewhere else. It may all turnaround and click for him once he does that. The spotlight at Chelsea might be too much for him.

“He gets into unbelievable positions. His movement and speed are a constant threat."

Newcastle and Howe want to sign "exceptional" star in January at all costs

Newcastle United want to complete the signing of an "exceptional" player at all costs during the January transfer window, according to a new update.

Newcastle want Tonali replacement

It has been a very taxing start to the season for Eddie Howe, who has had a lot to deal with during a campaign when his side were seemingly going to kick on further. Instead, Newcastle have suffered some desperately bad luck in the injury department, with so many important players missing for chunks of action, depleting them hugely, as was shown in the 2-0 defeat away to Bournemouth in their last Premier League outing.

On top of all the injuries, the Magpies have also had to go through the misery of having new signing Sandro Tonali suspended for 10 months for betting offences, bringing an end to his season before it had barely got underway. Such is the Italian's influence in the middle of the park, attention has swiftly turned to finding a replacement, with a new signing in January feeling vital.

Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a move to Newcastle a number of times, as he continues to struggle for game time at Manchester City, and the likes of Ruben Neves and N'Golo Kante have also been seen as targets for the Magpies, with the pair both now playing in the Saudi Pro League.

Newcastle desperate to sign Phillips

According to a new update from Tutto Juve, Newcastle want to sign Phillips at all costs in January, seeing him as their primary midfield target to make up for the loss of Tonali.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The report does state that the asking price "could be an issue as Newcastle United find themselves having to deal with FFP restrictions", adding that "Dan Ashworth and the Newcastle board most likely have not budgeted a central midfielder for the next transfer window", while Juventus are also providing stiff competition. It is also claimed that City aren't keen on losing a huge amount of money in the deal, considering they signed Phillips for big money last year, with a six-month loan with no option to buy looking unlikely.

Phillips still looks like a brilliant option for Newcastle in January, although it clearly isn't going to be easy to bring him in on their own terms, given City's current stance. The fact that he has the same agent as Nick Pope could help, though.

The 27-year-old will surely be desperate for a move away from the Etihad midway through the season, especially with Euro 2024 around the corner next summer, and St James' Park could be perfect for him, allowing him more regular starts in the second half of the season.

City manager Pep Guardiola has called Phillips "exceptional" in the past, showing that he clearly values the midfielder, despite picking others in front of him at the moment, and he has proven himself at the top level for a sustained period now, shining so much for England at Euro 2020.

Of all the options Newcastle are looking at to replace Tonali, Phillips seems to be considered the best following this update, and if a deal of some kind can be struck, he could be an inspired signing, whether that's on a short or long-term basis.

Man Utd plotting off-field deal to bring rival’s key man to Old Trafford

As Sir Jim Ratcliffe's arrival at Manchester United edges ever closer, those at Old Trafford will be anticipating several changes, whether that be the structure of the club or the players involved, with the potential for some ruthless decisions to be made. The Red Devils will hope that this is finally a turning point in their history after a disastrous era since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

On the pitch, Erik ten Hag's side have struggled at times this season, with their results in the Champions League likely resulting in an early exit. Meanwhile, in the Premier League, they sit sixth and three points adrift of the top four following their latest defeat at home to Bournemouth. Ratcliffe will aim to turn United's fortunes around – and one potential appointment would go a long way in achieving that.

Man Utd transfer news

United have suffered without much of a transfer structure over the years, with Old Trafford witnessing some failures to forget under a number of different managers. The latest of those flops has been Jadon Sancho, who is currently frozen out at the club after a falling-out with Ten Hag. Antony's stats show that he hasn't been much better either, with just eight goals in 59 appearances. It's clear that the Red Devils need a sporting director, and Ratcliffe could get one of the most impressive in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag may have found a solution to his goalscoring problem…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 8, 2023

According to 90min, Manchester United are interested in Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth. Ashworth has a long-standing friendship with Sir Dave Brailsford, who is reportedly playing a significant part in the process of Ratcliffe's arrival and is leading an inquiry into the club's operations to identify various improvements. Ashworth initially earned plaudits for his work at Brighton & Hove Albion, before taking up his current role at Newcastle, where he has continued to impress in the Premier League.

"Highly qualified" Ashworth would transform Man Utd

In desperate need of a sporting director, United would arguably be getting one of the best options in the Premier League with Ashworth, though it remains to be seen whether he would swap St James' Park for Old Trafford. Ashworth recently played down suggestions that he could make a move, saying (via 90min): "I'm really happy, [Newcastle] is a brilliant city, club and project. I'm thoroughly engaged in throwing myself into all of those things and really enjoying the challenge."

One man who has been impressed with the sporting director's work is Gary Neville, who posted on X in early November (formerly Twitter): "On my way up to the gantry last night, I bumped into Dan Ashworth. He transformed the FA’s structure, set Brighton up for this incredible period of success and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle. He’s competent, highly qualified and knows what he’s doing. Will work with his coach, recruitment team and other departments coherently and calmly.

"In the last two matches, Manchester United have played two clubs [Newcastle and Man City] that have installed proper football departments to support the team on the pitch and off it. The complete opposite of United. We haven’t got a sporting director! I used to travel up to Newcastle and feel sorry for their great fans when the energy and enthusiasm had been sapped from them under Mike Ashley.

"It was painful to see. Last night we saw the Theatre of Dreams turn into the Theatre of Nothing. Every single United fan bored and flat. On the pitch, the players in shock, the performances woeful and a manager struggling in front of our eyes. We’ve seen it before, we know how it ends and we’ve had enough."

Relief for Sri Lanka as Mendis cleared of serious injury

An X-ray has shown no breaks or fractures in the finger on which Mendis had been struck on Thursday

Andrew McGlashan in Hobart17-Jan-2019An X-ray has cleared Kusal Mendis of any serious injury, after he had taken a fierce blow while fielding at short leg on the first day of the tour game against the Cricket Australia XI, in Hobart.*A powerful sweep from Jake Doran hit Mendis during the middle session of the day-night match and having been in considerable pain, he quickly left the field for treatment. He spent the rest of the day icing the injury to his right ring finger, but has now been shown to have sustained no breaks or fractures.”We took him for an X-ray in the morning and it showed that he was fine,” team manager Jeryl Woutersz said on Friday. “We’re not sure if he will bat yet, because the finger is quite sore. But he’s okay.”The news will be a relief to Sri Lanka, for whom Mendis is a vital top-order batsman, especially in the absence of Angelo Mathews. Mendis comes into the series on the back of impressive form against New Zealand where he made an unbeaten 141 in the first Test and 67 in the second. Last year, he was the second-highest scorer in Tests with 1023 runs at 46.50.ALSO READ: ‘I knew if I scored a century against Australia I’d have a big future’The team is still waiting for confirmation on the extent of the injury to fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep, however. Pradeep had left the field after two overs on Thursday, with a suspected hamstring strain. Woutersz said Pradeep would undergo a scan sometime on Friday before the team made any further decisions on his further participation in the tour. Pradeep has had severe problems with injuries – and especially his hamstrings – over the years.Overall, Sri Lanka had had a mixed first day in the field in Hobart, reducing the CA XI to 5 for 98 before an unbroken stand of 218 between Kurtis Patterson and Doran became the dominant feature. Keeping the four players in Australia’s Test squad to 40 runs between them was a major plus, but head coach Chandika Hathurusingha was far less impressed with a familiar problem rearing its head in the shape of 12 no-balls – eight delivered by Kasun Rajitha.”It’s a big concern,” he said. “We need to get that right because it’s happened to us again. The spinners also bowled no-balls in the England series and we got wickets off no-balls. We need to get it right soon.”It’s about being aware of the line right in front of you basically. I think they are trying a bit too hard when the ball gets softer to get the ball through. It’s a mental thing so they need to adjust knowing they have to stay back.”The softness of the ball Hathurusingha referred to was part of a larger concern he had about the durability of the pink ball as the day wore on, but he hoped the Gabba pitch and outfield may aid its longevity during the first Test, starting January 24. Sri Lanka couldn’t keep hold of the run-rate later in the day either, with their spinners conceding more than five an over.”We got a lot of information about the pink ball as well because we are playing with it after a long time. The last time was in Barbados with a Dukes ball and this ball is different, it got softer very quickly. I thought our guys bowled really well at the start then we need to find how to be in the game when it gets softer.”*12.40pm, January 18: This story was updated with news of Mendis’ x-ray results and the latest on Nuwan Pradeep

PCB hands out new women's contracts after settlement of dues

The PCB has awarded central contracts to 17 women cricketers for the first half of 2019. In a press release, the Pakistan board said the new contracts were handed out after “the settlement of all outstanding payments from the July-December 2018 contract period”.In 2018, the women cricketers contracted with the PCB faced issues with regards to payments and drawing up of new contracts as the board went through a change of leadership. ESPNcricinfo understands these contracts were in the works since then, and have now been formally signed off on. These contracts will run till June 30, 2019.Umaima Sohail, the 21-year-old batsman who has played one ODI and seven T20Is in October and November, was the only new player to be handed a contract. From among the 20 previously contracted, the PCB said that four players – Fareeha Mehmood, Ghulam Fatima, Maham Tariq and Rameen Shamim – lost their contracts, and that came down to performance. The committee that decided on the contracts list included Haroon Rashid, director of cricket operations at the PCB, Jalaluddin, chairman of selectors, Mark Coles, women’s head coach, and Asmavia Iqbal, a member of the selection committee.”I know the four players who have not been awarded contracts will be disappointed, but the new contracts are related to performances,” Haroon Rashid said. “The new contracts are more competitive and further incentivise the top-performing players. This is part of the PCB’s strategy to encourage and promote women’s cricket. The PCB will continue to invest in women’s cricket as we aspire to be one of the top and consistent performing sides.”Contracted players
