Manchester City eyeing "super" Spurs star in repeat of Kyle Walker transfer

Last season, Manchester City sold Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Premier League competitors Arsenal and very nearly lived to regret it. Jesus scored 11 top-flight goals and provided seven assists for the Gunners, while Oleksandr Zinchenko was also a key contributor to Mikel Arteta's side, starting 26 league games (Transfermarkt).

Arsenal proved to be City's closest challengers for the title, ultimately finishing five points adrift as Pep Guardiola just about denied his former players glory. Now, another former City man is shining at a Premier League rival, and Guardiola seems intent on getting him back.

City plot Pedro Porro reunion

Unlike Jesus and Zinchenko, Pedro Porro didn't leave City directly for another English club, instead stopping at Sporting after an £7.6m transfer in 2022. It was from there he moved on to Spurs, initially on loan in January before a permanent £34.4m transfer in the summer (Transfermarkt).

koki-machida-pedro-porro-tottenham-opinion

Now, according to Tottenham Hotspur News, City are interested in signing Porro during the summer transfer window as a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker. Walker, of course, was also signed from Spurs back in 2017, but now Guardiola is planning for life without the Englishman.

There's a feeling that Porro would find it "terribly hard" to turn down a move to the Etihad owing to the strong Spanish link between himself and Guardiola. It should be stressed, though, that the same outlet previously reported that Real Madrid and Barcelona are also keen, so City may face some mighty competition.

Porro return would be sensational

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has raved about the "super" performances of his defender (Spurs Play), while Lilywhites columnist John Wenham says he's been "really impressed" with the 22-year-old in his first full season at the club, arguing that "he's been right up there in terms of right-backs" in the Premier League (Tottenham Hotspur News).

Sure enough, Porro ranks fifth in the division for assists (six) and sixth for expected assisted goals (5.3), so he deserves to be up there. He's creating high quality chances, and his teammates are finishing them (FBRef).

But it's not just about what he offers going forward – Porro also boasts strong defensive fundamentals. He sits second in the league for dribblers tackled (38), showing that he can hold his own in one-vs-one duels, and he leads the division outright in blocks (43), which speaks to smart positioning and a desire to lay his body on the line.

By the sounds of it, he'd relish another shot at playing for City, and the contract negotiations could be especially smooth because the club already have a prior relationship with his agent CAA Base Ltd, who also represent young English defender Rico Lewis (Transfermarkt).

This would be a pretty sensational transfer, with City potentially capturing a player who's started 19 out of 20 games for their direct Premier League rivals (Transfermarkt). Just a point separates the two sides in the table right now, although the reigning champions have played a game fewer, and so this would feel like a devastating blow for Spurs. Ironically, they haven't lost a major player to a fellow 'big six' club since Walker made the move to Manchester six and a half years ago, but that could change this summer.

Levy blows Chelsea away as Spurs move into pole position for £25m Nusa deal

Tottenham Hotspur have already added two new faces to their playing squad during the January transfer window and are now reportedly closing in on a third – but with a twistr.

Tottenham blow Chelsea away in £25m Nusa chase

The Lilywhites are set to win the race to sign Club Brugge forward Antonio Nusa ahead of their rivals, although he would not be available to Ange Postecoglou until the 2024/25 campaign. According to Football Insider, Daniel Levy has blown Premier League rivals Chelsea, as well as Fulham, away with a swoop for the talented teenager.

The report claims that Spurs are working hard to seal a £25m deal for the 18-year-old wizard and are now in 'pole position' to secure an early agreement before the window slams shut at the start of February, rather than waiting until the summer.

It states that Tottenham have stolen a march on Chelsea and Fulham as they have offered to send Nusa back to Brugge on loan for the remainder of this season, which is similar to the tactic they used with Destiny Udogie when they signed him from Udinese.

The Italy international remained with the Italian side on loan before linking up with his new teammates last summer, and the 21-year-old dnamo has hit the ground running as a regular starter for Postecoglou this term.

That proposal is said to have convinced Nusa as he is keen to remain with his current club until the summer, which this offer from Spurs would allow him to do. Football Insider add that the club are prioritising the signings of players under the age of 24 as they look to bolster the squad with young talent.

Nusa's potential is off the charts

The 18-year-old wizard is a promising gem who could arrive as a long-term project rather than a player to make an immediate impact on the pitch when he joins in the summer, should this deal go through.

He has plenty of time left to develop and improve over the years to come, with his 19th birthday not until April of this year, and Postecoglou could look to bed him in slowly in the hope that the talented dynamo eventually develops into a regular first-team starter.

As articulated by Sky Sports producer Dougie Critchley, Nusa could continue to grow whilst playing consistent minutes for Brugge in Belgium during the second half of the campaign. The left winger, who U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed has "ankle breaking" agility, caught the eye with his impressive displays during the first half of the season with three goals, two assists, and five 'big chances' created in 15 appearances and six Pro League starts.

He also made a few appearances for Norway during their European Championship qualifying campaign and produced three assists across three outings, despite being a starter in just one of those matches.

The Brugge starlet has shown plenty of promise with his contributions at the top end of the pitch for club and country and Spurs fans may keep a watchful eye on his performances between now and the rest of the season if Levy wins the race to land him ahead of next season.

Report: Man Utd quietly show interest in "monster" Barca star for Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag's centre-back ranks at Manchester United have been anything but settled this season. A big part of the problem is that Lisandro Martinez, the 2022 Fans' Footballer of the Year at Old Trafford, has been sidelined since mid-September because of a foot injury, only finally returning this weekend.

Ten Hag has since had to mix and match to find his best partnership, while juggling more injuries too. Harry Maguire has started nine Premier League games, and won the competition's Player of the Month award in November, but he's currently missing with a groin problem. It's also worth remembering that his manager was prepared to sell him last summer as United agreed a £30m fee with West Ham, only for the player to turn down the move.

Elsewhere, Raphael Varane has been available for all but three games, but been left on the bench eight times when fit, Victor Lindelof has missed the last five through injury and 36-year-old free signing Jonny Evans has been called upon to start nine league matches. Before the turn of the year, Ten Hag had used ten different pairings at the heart of defence. It's no surprise that it appears to be an area of focus in the transfer market in 2024.

United among Premier League quartet eyeing Araujo

According to HITC Football, Manchester United have expressed an interest in Barcelona's Ronald Araujo, quietly making it clear through third-party intermediaries that they would be keen to sign him if he becomes available. Their Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle are all thought to have done the same.

Barcelona defenderRonald Araujo.

Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have been at the forefront of the race and have actively tried to land Araujo this month, but Barcelona have told the Bavarians and all of the Uruguayan's other suitors that he's not for sale either in this window or the summer. Instead, their focus is on tying him down to a new contract ahead of the expiry of his current deal in two and a half years.

Araujo's speed catches the eye

A big part of Araujo's appeal is his physicality. Football podcaster Raj Chohan has called him an "athletic monster" and dubbed his recovery pace a "cheat code", and that assessment is supported by the figures. Only Raphinha recorded a higher top speed among all Barcelona players in the Champions League group stages, and Araujo ranked inside the top ten defenders overall.

This running power no doubt helps the 24-year-old when he moves upfield. When compared to positional peers in Europe's big five leagues and continental competition over the past year, he ranks in the 87th percentile for progressive carries, and the 93rd for successful take-ons per 90 minutes.

He'd been a dream signing for United or any of Europe's top clubs, but unfortunately, this one looks likely to remain the realm of fantasy. Speaking this week, Araujo explicitly mentioned the Red Devils as he refuted any notion that he was looking to leave.

"Rumours of all kinds appear in all transfer windows," he said. "It’s a normal thing. Every transfer window we have stories about me, they also said about Man United last summer. The only thing I can say is that I am focused on the team and also on this club. I’m comfortable here and I always try to give everything for this shirt."

£30m midfielder told to join Ange after news Spurs will do anything for him

A £30m midfielder has been told to pack his bags and join Tottenham after a recent claim they will "do everything possible" to sign him for manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs keen on signing new midfielder

Reports over the last month have suggested that Postecoglou wants to bring in a new midfielder at Spurs, and one who can provide that extra bit of dynamism/creativity.

While the Lilywhites head coach said new signings are unlikely this month as things stand, late twists may still be on the cards as we approach February 1, with Postecoglou refusing to completely rule out more transfer business (via Dan Kilpatrick).

Reliable media sources like Jacob Steinberg of The Times have also mooted potential late moves for the likes of Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, as the north Londoners apparently consider a late for the Englishman who's starring under Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.

Atalanta star Ederson has been linked with a move to Spurs as well, but it appears Postecoglou will have current midfield ace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to choose from a little while longer. The Dane's lawyer, Lars Helgreen, publicly confirmed his wish to remain in north London.

"Despite the rumours and noise, the player has always kept focus on helping the team, coaches and Tottenham," he told Sky in Germany (via The Evening Standard). "The player never asked to leave now. He’s very ambitious for Tottenham and for Denmark and continues to keep improving himself, like he did all of his career. He’s a strong character and player.

"His only focus is Tottenham to finish the season well and to help as much as possible."

Despite Hojbjerg's desire to stay, Steinberg's aforementioned report suggests that Spurs are still weighing up new midfielders, and one man who's been linked recently is Fenerbache star Sebastian Szymanski.

Sebastian Szymanski.

The Pole has bagged an incredible nine goals and eight assists in the Turkish Super Lig this season, and a report by newspaper Aksam claimed Spurs will "do everything possible" to sign Szymanski with Postecoglou personally very keen.

Szymanski told to pack his bags and join Tottenham

Following this report of serious interest, Szymanski has now been told to join Tottenham and pack his bags by former agent Kamil Kosowski. Speaking to Przeglad Sportowy (via Sport Witness), Kosowski is quoted saying that when a club like Spurs come calling, you just "pack up an go" and there is "no better time" than the present to do so.

He appears to be garnering quite a reputation as Poland's potential next star, and he would be quite the asset at Tottenham. Called "superb" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Aksam state he is valued at around £30 million.

Michael Hogan, Marnus Labuschagne fire Glamorgan to top of Division Two

Gloucestershire collapse inside a session and a half to allow Glamorgan to steal points at Bristol

ECB Reporters Network26-Jun-2019Michael Hogan claimed match figures of 7 for 73 as Glamorgan moved to the top of the Specsavers Championship Division Two table with a four-wicket victory over Gloucestershire at Bristol. Hogan added figures of 4 for 22 to his three first-innings wickets to help bowl out the home side for 161 from an overnight 41 for 2.Gloucestershire lost their last five wickets for just 16 runs after lunch, Graham Wagg taking two of them. James Bracey and Benny Howell each made 33, but a target of 188 from 49 overs made the visitors clear favourites. So it proved, Marnus Labuschagne continuing his prolific season with 82 and Billy Root contributing 31 as Glamorgan reached 188 for 6 with 6.5 overs to spare. They took 20 points to Gloucestershire’s six and overtake Lancashire at the summit of Division Two by a single point, having played one more game.A draw looked the most likely outcome when the hosts led by 67 at the start of play. But soon both overnight batsmen were out as Hogan had Gareth Roderick caught at second slip for 20 and Bracey’s innings was ended when he was lbw to a full delivery from Dan Douthwaite. Jack Taylor made 16 before becoming another leg-before victim, this time for David Lloyd, who then spilled a straightforward catch at first slip to give Howell a life off Marchant de Lange with the score 129 for 5.Gloucestershire were only 157 ahead at lunch and it looked a potentially costly error. Howell, who had also survived a tougher chance to Nic Selman at second slip, was unbeaten on 27 at the interval. But Lloyd soon atoned. With the total on 145 and the lead 171, he produced a sharp catch to his left to dismiss Ryan Higgins for 6 and give Hogan his third wicket.Soon it was 149 for 7 as Hogan bowled Howell. David Payne was caught behind trying to withdraw the bat from a delivery by Wagg, who then had Josh Shaw caught at point off a loose shot.Joined by last man Matt Taylor, Graeme van Buuren went on the attack and edged a catch behind the ball after pulling de Lange for four. Gloucestershire’s tail had offered little resistance and, with the sun breaking through, Glamorgan set about their second innings in some of the best batting conditions of the match.Selman fell cheaply, caught by Jack Taylor at point, cutting at a short ball from Payne. But Labuschagne and Charlie Hemphrey calmed any nerves in the visiting dressing room by adding 50 before tea.Glamorgan still needed another 132 off 36 overs. In the final session Hemphrey was brilliantly caught by Chris Dent, diving forward at cover, off Shaw, without adding to his score of 15. But Labuschagne moved confidently to his second half-century of the match off 61 balls, with seven fours, before Lloyd was bowled by Matt Taylor off an under edge for 8 with the score on 85.Not afraid to dance down the wicket to the seamers, Labuschagne showed why he is comfortably the leading run-maker in the Championship this season.Root, dropped at mid-off by Matt Taylor off van Buuren, was mortified to lift Shaw straight to cover and when Labuschagne was caught behind off the tireless Payne, 35 were still required.Douthwaite fell to Shaw near the end, but the experienced Wagg calmly saw Glamorgan home. It was Gloucestershire’s first defeat in the competition since August last year, a run of 11 games unbeaten.

Injury blow as Celtic contract talks with 21 year-old are not going well

A significant update has emerged regarding the future of one Celtic player, with contract talks not believed to be going well at the moment.

Celtic transfer news

The winter window has closed and the Hoops will already be looking at which players could arrive at the club during the summer transfer window, as Brendan Rodgers ensures he doesn't rest on his laurels. In fact, one player who could arrive before that point is former Newcastle United and Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle, with the 34-year-old linked with a move to Parkhead in recent days. He is now a free agent after his departure from Stoke City on deadline day, meaning he is free to join whoever he wants.

While new signings are to be expected later this year, there is also the very real threat that some key players leave Celtic this summer, not least Matt O'Riley. A new update has suggested that the Hoops will accept a £25m offer for their star midfielder, should it arrive at the end of the season.

Now, another report has suggested that one more Celtic player could be out of the door once the current campaign reaches its conclusion, albeit for different reasons to O'Riley.

Montgomery set to leave Celtic after injury blow

A new report from Football Insider's Wayne Veysey has claimed that Adam Montgomery looks increasingly likely to leave Celtic this year, with contract talks not moving in a positive direction, having returned injured from a loan spell at Motherwell.

Celtic defender Adam Montgomery.

"Adam Montgomery is set to leave Celtic at the end of the season and has likely played his last match for the club, sources have told Football Insider… he is yet to agree to an extension despite holding contract talks with the club.

"Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that is it looking “increasingly likely” that the Hoops will let him leave the club for free after a devastating injury blow."

Montgomery's injury setback at Motherwell was a cruel blow for him, as he looks to kick on in his career, and it does now make complete sense for him to leave Celtic in the summer. The 21-year-old will be out of contract in the summer of 2025, and considering Rodgers doesn't see him as an important part of his plans, allowing him to leave for a small fee, rather than on a free transfer when his expiry date arrives.

Sky Sports reporter shares £25m transfer news on "wonderful" Celtic player

Will he be on the move this summer?

ByHenry Jackson Feb 4, 2024

It seems pointless to suddenly offer Montgomery a long-term deal when he has only made 20 appearances for Celtic over a number of years. He is at an age now when he will want to enjoy regular football at a permanent new club, rather than being loaned out constantly, having already spent spells at Aberdeen, St Johnstone and Fleetwood Town, as well as Motherwell.

Leus du Plooy, Anuj Dal hammer home advantage for Derbyshire

Middlesex are facing an uphill struggle to save the Division Two match at Derby after a record-breaking day for Derbyshire’s batsmen.Leus du Plooy scored 118 and Anuj Dal 92 as the home side took their first innings to 557 for 6 before declaring. The visitors slipped to 65 for 2 before Nick Gubbins and skipper Dawid Malan added 67 in 22 overs but Luis Reece removed Gubbins to leave Middlesex on 135 for 3, 422 runs behind.Middlesex’s hopes of pegging Derbyshire back by taking early wickets quickly evaporated as du Plooy and Dal accumulated steadily to secure maximum batting points to take the county past its previous highest score against the visitors of 414.The patience du Plooy had shown throughout his innings was rewarded when he reached his maiden first-class century in English cricket, a milestone he celebrated by skipping down the pitch to drive Steve Finn for six.It needed a fine diving catch by Nathan Sowter who clung on to a firm cut off George Scott at point to end his innings but that was Middlesex’s only success of another chastening session in the field.Derbyshire continued to pile on the runs after lunch and the declaration only came after Dal lifted Toby Roland-Jones to third man where Finn dived forward to take a good catch. It was the first time in Derbyshire’s history that five players had passed 90 in the same innings but it was now a question of whether their bowlers could get more out of a pitch which had shown some signs of uneven bounce.Sam Robson survived a hard chance to third slip in the third over before Stevie Eskinazi was rapped on the glove by a ball from Ravi Rampaul that spat from a good length but the openers were making good progress until both fell to loose strokes.Eskinazi reached for a drive at Reece and was well caught by Matt Critchley in the covers and Derbyshire were gifted another wicket after tea when Robson obligingly guided Tony Palladino into the hands of first slip. Robson’s dismayed reaction said everything about his dismissal which left his side a long way from the follow-on target of 408.A lot now rested on Malan and Gubbins who played with discipline and restraint although Malan cashed in on a wayward Logan van Beek over by driving and cutting the fast bowler for four boundaries. They looked like surviving to the close but Reece returned at the Racecourse End to trap Gubbins on the crease for 37 and put Derbyshire firmly in control.

Former Real Madrid and Tottenham star Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33, bringing an end to a glittering career. A few months later, Wrexham co-owner McElhenney tried to lure the winger out of retirement by joining the Welsh outfit. While that proved unsuccessful, the Hollywood owner has not given up on recruiting the ex-Los Angeles FC man.

He told The Athletic: “Gareth Bale is still technically available! I made the plea last year and I’m just going to tell Gareth that the offer is still on the table. We’ll let him play golf whenever he wants. Just as long he comes training and we’ll figure out how to get him in the team.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bale is, arguably, one of the greatest players of his generation. He won a host of La Liga titles, Champions League trophies, and more, and played at the highest level in the sport. However, it seems the 34-year-old is happily retired and it will take something very special to get him back playing again.
