Newcastle looking to "snatch" €30m box-to-box maestro this summer

Newcastle United are interested in signing a box-to-box midfielder hailed for having "good technique" this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies continue to be linked with plenty of players ahead of the summer, even though the January transfer window only recently came to a close.

Newcastle are reportedly at the front of the queue to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana at the end of the season, with £60m potentially enough to get their man. Meanwhile, youngster Amario Cozier-Duberry has also emerged as a target, being seen as a possible replacement for Miguel Almiron.

In terms of the futures of current Magpies players, Emil Krafth is now expected to sign a new deal at St James' Park, which is seen as a twist after looking like he could move on when his current deal expires this summer.

Newcastle want Ederson

According to Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are still pushing to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson this summer, and "will do everything" they can to snap him up.

In Calciomercato's report, it is claimed that the Magpies plan to "snatch" him away from his current club, seeing him as a great option to come in and bolster the options at Eddie Howe's disposal.

Ederson could be a brilliant signing by Newcastle this summer, ticking so many boxes when it comes to what they are looking for in new signings. At 24, he is still a young player whose peak could still be a number of years away, and he has been praised by former manager Tiago Nunes, who has said of him:

"He is a box-to-box player with the energy to keep going back and forth all the time. My first impressions were of a player with a lot of strength, a lot of physical ability, a player who was a powerful striker on the ball, with good technique. Basically, someone with characteristics that are difficult to find, especially in Brazilian football."

Meanwhile, South American football expert Tim Vickery has described the Brazilian as a "well-built central midfielder" who is "strong on the ball", adding that he also has a "strong personality".

Valued at €30m (£25.6m), Ederson isn't out of contract at Atalanta until the summer of 2026, so he is unlikely to be available on the cheap, but given his long-term potential and quality in the middle of the park, he could be worth every penny, being viewed as a younger alternative to Joelinton.

He certainly looks to be a primary target for Newcastle, given how strong their interest seems in this latest update, and if Bruno Guimaraes moves on this summer, he could be a seamless replacement.

Leeds have made recent bid to sign "important player" who Farke knows well

Leeds United have reportedly made a recent offer to sign a new player who Daniel Farke knows well.

Leeds’ form in 2024

The Whites have been unbeatable so far this year, winning all eight of their Championship games in 2024. The most recent victory came at Plymouth Argyle, which took the club back into second place having played a game more than Southampton and Ipswich Town.

Farke praised his side after the win at Home Park, saying:

“It was perhaps not our best performance of the season. The schedule is relentless. It was important to add another clean sheet, a really good [defensive] performance. We started really well in the game. "But then also, there were one or two periods of the game where we had to stay strong and didn't allow them to have chances.

"Definitely a deserved win but hard fought. I'm pretty proud, especially with the clean sheet today. The first side to win here since October.”

Leeds, Farke and the 49ers Enterprises will hopefully be preparing for a season back in the Premier League over the summer, and it looks as if the German has his eyes on a player he signed for Norwich City.

Leeds make £6m offer for new winger

According to Turkish outlet Takvim in the last 48 hours, Leeds United have ‘recently made an official offer’ in the region of €7m (£6m) to sign Besiktas winger Milot Rashica. It doesn’t say when the bid was made, either in January or since the window has shut with a view to a summer deal.

Milot Rashica.

Besiktas have turned down the bid, though, with their management saying: "We are aiming for the championship in the new season. Rashica is an important player who can lead us to this goal."

As mentioned, Rashica has previous experience of working under Farke, making 12 appearances under the now-Leeds boss at Carrow Road in 2021/22 before he was sacked. Farke previously hailed the winger, saying:

“Milot Rashica was excellent in our first games but he had a difficult pre-season and unbelievable workload during the international break.

“On Wednesday night he played for Kosovo in Spain and had to work a lot playing against the ball for ninety minutes and then travel back to England and then travelling the three-and-a-half hours to London. He was a bit tired and needed to have a break.”

As we know, Leeds already have a number of talented wingers in Yorkshire, such as Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto and Dan James, so should one of the three depart, perhaps Rashica could be viewed as a replacement.

Rashica, after leaving England, has played for Galatasaray and Besiktas, contributing to more than 20 goals in 56 appearances. The 27-year-old is under contract until 2027, though, so Leeds may need to up their bid considerably over the coming months if they want him at Elland Road this summer.

Aston Villa make contact over “insane” player who could replace Zaniolo

Jhon Duran stayed at Aston Villa during the January transfer window, but his future at Villa Park remains uncertain. Early in the window, it emerged that both Milan clubs were in talks over signing Duran on loan until the end of the season amid Unai Emery's concerns over his attitude on the training ground.

Then, as we crept closer to the deadline, it was revealed that Chelsea had held discussions over a move for the Colombian, aware that Emery isn't the "biggest fan" of the 2023 signing.

Elsewhere, Villa are set to part with Nicolo Zaniolo at the end of the season despite agreeing to a conditional obligation to buy when they signed him on loan from Galatasaray last summer. The club have been disappointed with his performances, and the Italian is preparing to leave this summer.

Like Duran, Zaniolo has appeared as a centre-forward this season, while also featuring as a second striker, and the exit of one or both players could force Villa into the market for a replacement to provide cover and competition for Ollie Watkins.

Villa in David race

According to Football Transfers, Aston Villa are one of the Premier League clubs to have made contact with Lille to register their interest in Jonathan David, alongside Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle. Brentford manager Thomas Frank is described as a big admirer too.

Lille are demanding €50m (around £43m) for David, who's "desperate" to play in the Premier League. It's worth noting that his contract is due to expire in 18 months' time, which could put the Ligue 1 club under pressue to sell him this summer.

"Insane" David would be Champions League-level signing

Having joined Lille from Gent in 2020, David has gone on to either score or assist 86 goals in 166 appearances for the club, including 68 in 133 in the league. In the club's entire history, only Andre Strappe (82) has scored more than David's 71, and he was playing in the mid-20th century. No wonder, then, that European football writer Antonio Mango has called his output "absolutely insane".

The 2022/23 season was David's best to date as he struck 26 times in 40 games, including 24 in Ligue 1. As you can see in the table below, only Kylian Mbappe and Alexandre Lacazette scored more in the French top-flight, and only five players across the big five leagues posted a higher tally.

David will do well to match those figures this season, with 13 under his belt so far, but there's no doubt that this would be a Champions League-level signing for a side that is desperate to return to Europe's premier club competition.

Palestrinas: CBF confirma Palmeiras x Ferroviária no Allianz Parque

First approach: Liverpool make initial contact to sign £60m Man City target

Through to the the Carabao Cup final, where they will play Chelsea at Wembley once again, and top of the Premier League, it would be fair to reach the verdict that Liverpool's summer rebuild went better than ever in the middle of the park. But reports now suggest that they could yet seek the icing on the cake in the form of a Manchester City target in the summer.

Liverpool seeking more midfield reinforcements

With under a week left until the January window slams shut, it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp will welcome fresh faces or not. In no position to panic, the Reds will likely continue to evaluate their options and wait for the perfect moment to strike. If that perfect moment doesn't come, however, those at Anfield seem unlikely to buy for the sake of buying.

That hasn't stopped the transfer rumours from circling of course. Reports have linked Liverpool with the likes of Piero Hincapie and Federico Redondo, having supposedly made contact in pursuit of both players. Alas, with such little time remaining in the window, any deal would have to develop quickly if the Reds were to welcome reinforcements. Instead, it seems as though their attention is firmly fixed on the summer transfer window.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

According to Bolavip, Liverpool have made an approach for Alan Varela to enquire over the costs of a summer move. The Porto midfielder has a release clause of €70m (£60m) and has attracted the interest of the Reds, alongside Premier League rivals Manchester City.

At 22-years-old, it looks increasingly likely that the Argentine defensive midfielder will have the world at his feet in months to come. As Liverpool and City do battle on the pitch in competition to win the Premier League title, the Reds could get one over on their rivals in the transfer market.

"Wonderful" Varela can unleash Mac Allister

Whilst Mac Allister has gradually grown into his defensive midfield role at Liverpool, it's still not his natural position. The former Brighton & Hove Albion man operates better in the number eight role ahead of the defensive midfielder. After the Reds missed out on Moises Caicedo this summer, however, he was thrown into the deeper role in what has limited his attacking output.

If Liverpool want to solve that problem and unlock Mac Allister's best traits in the process, then signing Varela could be the key. The 22-year-old has risen to stardom at Porto and could now be ready for England's top flight. Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig certainly believes that the midfielder is a talented player…

When the summer transfer window arrives, it will certainly be interesting to see who wins the race for Varela, as Liverpool and Manchester City carry their rivalry from the pitch to the transfer market.

James Anderson ruled out of Ireland Test with calf injury

James Anderson has been ruled out of the one-off Test against Ireland at Lord’s, starting tomorrow, and is a significant doubt for England’s Ashes opener at Edgbaston in just over a week’s time, after failing to recover from a torn calf muscle.Anderson has not bowled competitively for almost three weeks, after sustaining a minor tear to his right calf while playing for Lancashire against Durham at Sedburgh on July 2.Although England had been optimistic about his recovery – with the national selector, Ed Smith, even intimating that he might play with a limited workload during the Ireland match – he did not bowl during England’s training session on Monday, and was missing from the official team photo on Tuesday morning. His absence opens the way for Warwickshire’s Olly Stone to make his England debut, despite having played just two first-class matches this summer after sustaining a stress fracture of the back ahead of the tour of the Caribbean in February. Somerset’s Lewis Gregory is also in line for a first Test call-up, as part of a four-prong pace attack also featuring Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes.Longer term, however, the injury is a significant concern for England, with the Ashes looming on August 1. They are already set to start the series without Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, both of whom sustained side strains during England’s victorious World Cup campaign, and the absence of Anderson, their all-time leading Test wicket-taker, would be a major blow.Even though he will be turning 37 on the eve of the Ashes, Anderson remains England’s pre-eminent strike force in English conditions. He claimed 33 wickets in seven Tests in the 2018 home summer, including 24 at 18.12 in England’s 4-1 series win against India, and needs another 25 to become the first fast bowler in history to reach 600 in Tests. He was also England’s outstanding bowler in their most recent Ashes campaign in Australia, claiming 17 wickets at 27.82, including a five-wicket haul in the second Test in Adelaide.England’s captain, Joe Root, however, played down the significance of Anderson’s absence.”Jimmy probably would have been able to get through this Test match but we’re just making sure that he’s absolutely ready. We thought the last thing we want is him carrying a niggle going into a series so we tried to be sensible about it and give him as much time to be 100 percent going into that series – a five-match series. So we’re very confident that he’ll be fit [for Edgbaston].”

Byju's to be India's sponsor from September 2019

The learning app takes over from mobile phones manufacturer Oppo and their contract will run through to March 2022

In a surprise development, OPPO, the Chinese mobile manufacturing company that paid a record sum in 2017 to secure the sponsorship rights of the Indian cricket team, has bailed out of their contract nearly three years before it ends. On Thursday, the BCCI said OPPO was being replaced by Byju’s, a learning app, which will now be the Indian team’s sponsor till March 2022.As part of the deal, the Byju’s logo will be on the shirts of the Indian players, both men and women, in all three formats starting with the series against South Africa in September.OPPO had originally paid INR 1079 crore (approx USD 162 million) for their five-year deal, which was double the base price of INR 538 crore (approx USD 81 million) set by BCCI in 2017. As per the deal OPPO would pay INR 4.61 crore (approx USD 693,000) per match for bilateral series and INR 1.51 crore (approx USD 227,000) per match for ICC sponsored tournaments.ESPNcricinfo understands OPPO has opted to assign the remainder of the sponsorship to Byju’s, which is allowed under the terms of the original contract. However, Byju’s would need to pay the BCCI an additional 5% over the balance amount as re-assignment fee.According to a board official, if it were to put out a tender to sell the sponsorship rights for the truncated period of 19 months, it might have received a smaller bid since the market is currently “soft”. With Byju’s picking up the contract from OPPO, the official said BCCI had actually managed to generate a profit.Byju Raveendran, Byju’s founder and chief executive officer, said the deal would have a positive impact for his company. “We are proud to be the Indian Cricket Team sponsor. Cricket is the heartbeat of all Indians and we are thrilled to be an integral part of our much loved team,” Raveendran said in a media release issued by BCCI. “As a learning company, BYJU’S has always recognised the critical role that sport plays in a child’s development. Just as cricket inspires a billion budding dreams across India, we too as a learning company hope to inspire the love of learning in every child’s heart.”

Alan Nixon: "Magnificent" 4-2-3-1 manager is now keen on Sunderland job

Sunderland are still searching for a new manager after the sacking of Michael Beale, and a "magnificent" boss is believed to be keen on taking the job.

Sunderland manager latest

The Black Cats relieved Beale of his duties last week, following a poor run of form that saw his side slipping down the Championship table. Since then, Mike Dodds has been in interim charge at Sunderland, but things didn't start under him, with another defeat coming their way against Swansea City at the Stadium of Light.

That has highlighted the need to find a long-term replacement for Beale as soon as possible, and a number of potential candidates have emerged in recent days. Paul Heckingbottom is one player who is reportedly in the mix to be Sunderland's next boss, having most recently managed Sheffield United last year, prior to losing his job at Bramall Lane. Marek Papszun is more of a left-field option who has emerged, with the 49-year-old currently without a club.

Reims ace Will Still is also a name who isn't going away, having been mooted as a managerial target for the Black Cats in the past, with his future in France up in the air.

Alex Neil keen on Sunderland job

According to reliable reporter Alan Nixon on Patreon [via Football League World, former boss Alex Neil is interested in becoming Sunderland's next manager, having been in charge at the Stadium of Light in the past in what is an eye-catching update.

Stoke City's former manager Alex Neil.

The Scot's most recent job was at Stoke City, where he managed between 2022 and 2023, while his stint with the Black Cats was a short one in 2022, lasting just 24 matches. He guided them to the Championship in that time, however, sealing promotion from League One after a playoff final win over Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.

Neil certainly represents an interesting option for Sunderland, and the fact that he already knows the club well means he could be a safer appointment than others.

He also generally adopts a 4-2-3-1 formation as his go-to system, which is similar to Beale, so the squad could find it easy enough to adapt to the change. Meanwhile, Peter Reid waxed lyrical over him during his time as manager, saying:

"I thought they were tremendous. They were solid at the back. I think Alex Neil has done a magnificent job, I thought Pritchard played well, Roberts played really well, but in general he’s just made them hard to beat and they always keep going and that typified it at Wembley."

Ultimately, the decision rests with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and those high up at Sunderland, but if they have faith in Neil having unfinished business and returning, it is a decision that needs to be trusted.

Sunderland could take huge risk on 3-5-2 coach who's unbeaten v Black Cats

ByKelan Sarson Feb 22, 2024

Someone like Still could arguably represent a more exciting appointment, considering he is only 31 years of age, bringing fresh ideas and long-term potential with him to the club, but Neil has been there and done it, having more experience, making this one to monitor.
