Suryakumar 'makes everyone else look so much worse,' says awestruck Maxwell

“He’s playing some of the most ridiculous shots I’ve ever seen and he’s doing it stupidly consistently,” the Australia batter says

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Nov-2022Suryakumar Yadav has been wowing everyone – colleagues, experts, fans – with his incredible 360-degree hitting in T20 cricket. Glenn Maxwell is the latest to talk about being awestruck by Suryakumar’s batting, saying, “No-one we’ve got is close to that; no-one anyone else has got is close to that”.Not averse to playing a few unorthodox shots himself, Maxwell said that the consistency with which Suryakumar has been able to hit some of his most audacious shots was “ridiculous”, and much else.Related

Suryakumar Yadav defies reality to play anime cricket

“Suryakumar Yadav is doing it in such a bizarre, ungainly way where he’s hitting the middle of the bat by just like stepping across, deciding to sweep somebody who’s bowling 145 (kph) from off the wicket on the other side,” Maxwell said on . “And then just putting his head down walking down chewing some gum, glove tap, bat tap, sort of a bit of a swagger and off he goes again and does it again.”Suryakumar, the No. 1 batter in the ICC T20I player rankings, most recently hit 111 not out in 51 balls to give India a big win over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui. The extent of his domination, and the damage he caused, could be gauged from the numbers the rest of the India batting unit put up: 69 runs in 69 balls. Virat Kohli called it a “video game innings”, while Suryakumar himself admitted to being amazed at some of the strokes he hit.

Calling the innings “extraordinary”, Maxwell, who is recuperating after breaking his leg in a “freak accident”, said that it sometimes got frustrating for him to watch Suryakumar bat as he was “so much better than everyone else”.”I saw the [Mount Maunganui T20I] scorecard from the first innings. I screenshot it and sent it straight to Finchy [Aaron Finch] and I said, ‘What is going on here?’ This bloke is batting on a different planet. I said, ‘Look at everyone else’s scores and look at this bloke that’s 111 off 50! What is going on?’.” Maxwell said. “So, the next day, I watched the full replay on [an app] and watched the whole innings. It is just extraordinary.”He’s playing some of the most ridiculous shots I’ve ever seen and he’s doing it stupidly consistently. It’s just actually a bit hard to watch because it just makes everyone else look so much worse for not being able to do that.”

“He plays the field so well and his wrists and hand speed is so quick that he is able to make a last minute adjustment, a last second adjustment to make sure that he can get the ball into a gap”Glenn Maxwell

Suryakumar has been in exceptional form in T20Is in 2022. He is the highest run-getter with 1164 runs in 31 games this year, averaging 46.56 and striking at 187.43. He also had a terrific T20 World Cup, where he notched up 239 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 189.68, often giving India the impetus at the end.And a lot of it has come from finding different angles on the field and doing it consistently.”He plays the field so well and his wrists and hand speed is so quick that he is able to make a last minute adjustment, a last second adjustment to make sure that he can get the ball into a gap,” Maxwell said. “The way he plays spin, the way he hits it over cover, he reverses really well, he sweeps strong, and he is still able to hit the ball strong down the ground. To have that ability to hit the ball around the ground but so powerfully all over the place. He’s just so good.”

    WHAT HAPPENED

With the game deadlocked and both sides pushing for a goal, Portland Timbers star Antony Alves produced a moment of magic to beat his man. Receiving the ball with his back to goal just outside the penalty area, he executed a brilliant flick that lifted the ball perfectly into the path of onrushing David Da Costa. The former Lens star timed his run perfectly, met the ball with a powerful first-time volley that rocketed past the Galaxy goalkeeper. The game eventually ended up in a 4-2 win for the Timbers despite a late two-goal flurry from the LA Galaxy.

Rangers hit the jackpot selling star who Gerrard described as "world-class"

How are Rangers able to make a success of this season?

On Sunday, Philippe Clement saved his job, for now, as the Gers battled to a 3-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle; Václav Černý on target in Gorgie, while Jamie McCart scored not one but two unfortunate own goals.

In terms of the Premiership table, this result is immaterial, given that Celtic remain 13 points clear at the top, but it was also a crucial victory for the Light Blues, to life morale if nothing else, considering they’d been ignominiously dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Queen’s Park a week earlier.

So, as Rangers fans rage against their side’s current predicament, we look back at better times at Ibrox, highlighting one of the most profitable sales in the club’s 153-year history.

Steven Gerrard's time at Rangers

When Steven Gerrard arrived at Rangers, the club were a total mess, having gone through three managers the previous season, finishing third in the Premiership.

Meantime, they had been dumped out of Europa League qualifying by Luxembourgish side Progrès Niederkorn, a defeat Lawrence Ostlere of the Guardian labelled ‘humiliating’, while Scott Lewis of the National believes it to be the worst result in the club’s entire history.

This is pertinent because the Europa League is where Gerrard was able to make immediate progress upon his arrival in Glasgow.

During his first season, the Light Blues came through four rounds of qualifying to get into the Europa League group phase, before reaching the competition’s round of 16 during both of the next two campaigns, enjoying noteworthy victories over Midtjylland, Legia Warsaw, Feyenoord, Porto, Braga, Galatasaray and others.

During that third season, Gerrard also led Rangers to their 55th league title, ending Celtic’s streak at nine-in-a-row, going through the entire Premiership campaign undefeated, winning 32 of 38 fixtures, thereby ending up a whopping 25 points clear, the club’s first unbeaten top-flight campaign since 1898/99.

He departed for Aston Villa soon after, but this remains Rangers’ only league title since 2011, hence why Mark Pirie of the Daily Record has reported that Gerrard could return to Ibrox, having departed Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq last month.

Regardless of who has been manager, as noted by David Irvine of the National, Rangers do not make enough profit from player sales, bringing in less than £3m this season, compared to the £56m raised by fierce rivals Celtic.

rangers-ryan-kent-champions-league-leeds-transfer

Many of Gerrard’s stalwarts, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to name the two most high-profile, have been allowed to leave for free, while Connor Goldson (£2.5m), Borna Barišić (free) and Joe Aribo (£6m) have all departed for pittance.

However, Rangers’ second-most expensive sale of all time did come as a result of the Gerrard era, and Rangers will be delighted they cashed in when they did.

Rangers academy graduate struggling down south

The title-winning season of 2020/21 was very much a breakthrough year for right-back Nathan Patterson, celebrating his 19th birthday mid-way through the campaign.

He made 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring his first-ever senior goal during the 9-5 aggregate Europa League victory over Royal Antwerp.

Gerrard labelled the youngster’s work on the ball as “world-class”, while later adding the teenager “became a man tonight”, following a 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague in the Czech Republic.

Meantime, former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thompson was delighted by Patterson’s ‘remarkable rise’, while Jordan Campbell of the Athletic described him as one of Scottish football’s ‘brightest’ young talents.

So, despite having only made just 27 senior appearances for Rangers, totalling a mere 1,554 minutes, Everton paid £11m plus £5m in add-ons for his services in January 2022, although this move has not worked out.

Nathan Patterson of Everton

His time on Merseyside has been blighted by persistent injuries, suffering long-term ankle, hamstring and thigh injuries, most recently starting a Premier League match all the way back on 5 April last year.

As the table outlines, despite the fact he wasn’t starting every week, Patterson was available for the vast majority of last season, before requiring hamstring surgery in April, which saw him sit out the European Championships in Germany.

He made his long-awaited comeback at Old Trafford in December, but is once again sidelined, simply unable to stay fit for any extended period of time.

This has seen the 23-year-old’s Transfermarkt value drop to £12m, underlining that Rangers were certainly right to cash in when they did.

Exclusive: Farke told to utilise £90k-p/w Leeds player who wants to leave

Former Leeds United man Jermaine Pennant believes Daniel Farke should reintroduce a player who wants to leave the club to the squad next season, as he has Premier League quality.

Leeds on course for promotion

Leeds boosted their Championship promotion chances significantly with a dramatic 2-1 victory against Sunderland in their last match, with Pascal Struijk striking late to put his side seven points clear of third-place Burnley.

With 13 games left to play, the Whites are in a very strong position to return to the Premier League at the second time of asking, and Pennant has told Football FanCast he fancies his former side’s chances of going all the way.

“I can’t see a massive crash, I can’t see a massive dip in form. With the Championship, there’s so many games, but I think Leeds are in a comfortable place. Will they win the league? That’s a question to be asked, but for automatic promotion, I think they’re looking odds on.”

Leeds now considering signing £5m Sunderland star and "interesting" striker

Leeds are beginning to put plans in place for next season and are keen on adding more firepower to their forward line.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 19, 2025

After suffering relegation from the Premier League in 2023, the West Yorkshire outfit were forced to loan out Rasmus Kristensen and Jack Harrison to top-tier clubs.

When asked whether Farke should bring any of the players currently out on loan back into the fold next season, the former Leeds man said: “I think Jack Harrison. We’ve seen teams come into the Premier League and not invest in Premier League players who can do the job. The Championship and the Premier League is such a drastic difference.

“So a player like Harrison who’s been in the Premier League and is in and out but knows all about it, I think they need to keep players like that and bring him back in.”

Harrison keen to stay at Everton

The £90k-per-week winger has received regular game time at Everton this season, and during the January transfer window it was reported he wanted to earn a permanent deal with the Toffees, rather than returning to Elland Road.

Of course, that stance could change if Leeds are promoted to the Premier League this season, but the 28-year-old may also still be keen on being a part of the David Moyes rebuild, having played a key role since the Scot returned to Goodison Park.

Everton's Carlos Alcaraz celebrates scoring their second goal with Everton'sJackHarrison

Although Harrison has been impressive in the top flight in the past, amassing five goals and seven assists for the Whites in the 2022-23 campaign, this season has not been his best, with the Everton loanee still yet to record a goal contribution in any competition.

As such, it’s not the end of the world if a return to Elland Road isn’t on the cards this summer, and Farke may perhaps focus more on bringing in Manor Solomon on a permanent deal, with Pennant also particularly impressed by the Israel star.

Big Doucoure upgrade: Everton close in on signing "fearless" star for Moyes

The January transfer window is set to slam shut on Monday of next week and this means that Everton do not have much time left to make signings to bolster their squad.

David Moyes was brought in for a second spell at Goodison Park earlier this month, replacing Sean Dyche in the dugout, and is yet to make his first addition.

Everton manager DavidMoyes on the touchline before the match

The Scottish manager has made a strong start to life back on Merseyside, though, with wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion in his first three matches.

Everton are in the market to add more quality to the group, despite the impressive results of late, and Southampton full-back Kyle Walker-Peters is one star who is reportedly on their radar.

The Toffees have also been linked with an interest in Brighton & Hove Albion youngster Evan Ferguson to add to their options at the top end of the pitch.

Brighton’s Ireland international is not the only attack-minded player on Everton’s list of targets, however, as the club are reportedly closing in on a deal for a new forward who could replace Abdoulaye Doucoure in the number 10 role…

Abdoulaye Doucoure's form this season

The Mali international has been a regular starter for the Toffees this season, with 19 starts in 20 Premier League appearances, but has failed to offer much in the way of quality at the top end of the pitch.

Doucoure has played more matches as an attacking midfielder than in any other role this term, yet the midfield dud is currently on zero goals, zero ‘big chances’ created, and zero assists in the top-flight.

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure

The former Watford man, who did score seven goals in 32 matches last season in the Premier League, has simply not offered enough in the final third to make himself an influential figure for Everton.

Only Southampton (16) have scored fewer goals than the Toffees (19) in the division this season and that suggests that they need more quality from the players in the attacking areas of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Doucoure has directly contributed to more goals for the opposition (one) than he has for his own team (zero) and has struggled with the physicality of matches, losing the majority of his duels.

This is why Everton should be in the market to find a player with the ability to offer more in the final third as a second striker behind a starting number nine.

Everton closing in on Doucoure upgrade

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, the Toffees are one step away from signing Hamza Igamane on a permanent deal from Scottish giants Rangers.

The report claims that the Premier League side are looking to finalise a deal for the Morocco U23 international before the January transfer window slams shut at the start of next week.

It states that they have identified the former FAR Rabat star as the ideal replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who suffered a hamstring injury against Brighton last time out, and are now moving in to wrap up a transfer for the Ibrox sensation.

Tuttosport adds that Everton are also willing to part ways with Portuguese centre-forward Beto, and that Serie A side Torino are willing to offer £15m to bring him back to Italy.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk reported earlier this week that it would take a fee of £25m or more to sign Igamane from Rangers this month, because the Scottish Premiership outfit are reluctant to part ways with the forward midway through the season.

Transfer Focus

Tuttosport does not reveal how much the Toffees would pay for the striker, despite them closing in on a move, but recouping £15m for Beto could go some way to funding a deal for the Gers ace.

Whilst the report indicates that he could arrive at Goodison Park as a replacement for Calvert-Lewin in the centre-forward position, Igamane could be best suited to taking Doucoure’s place in the number ten or second striker role.

Why Hamza Igamane is way better than Abdoulaye Doucoure

Igamane has played the majority of the matches in his career as a centre-forward but he has also played as an attacking midfielder and as a wide player, which means that he is no stranger to operating behind a striker.

The 22-year-old dynamo was described as “fearless” and like “Morgan Rogers”, who plays as a second striker for Aston Villa, by analyst Ben Mattinson, which speaks to his suitability to play in a deeper position.

He may not have the physicality, given that the Moroccan ace has lost 65% of his duels in the Premiership, to lead the line as the sole striker in a Premier League team.

However, his performances for Rangers in the Premiership and the Europa League this season suggest that he does have the technical ability to come in and offer far more than Doucoure as an attacking threat in a number ten or second striker role.

Igamane is a dynamic, powerful, runner with the technical quality to make an impact at the top end of the pitch as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

As you can see in the table above, the Rangers superstar has racked up 13 goals and six ‘big chances’ created in just 16 starts in the Premiership and the Europa League combined.

These statistics show that he has been a consistent and reliable presence for Philippe Clement in the final third. whereas, Doucoure has offered next to nothing in the Premier League as an attacker.

Therefore, Igamane would come in as a way better option than the Mali international in the second half of the season, even if he could only translate half of his form for Rangers over to the Premier League, which is why the Gers man could be an excellent signing for Moyes.

However, at the time of writing, Postecoglou still remains without star striker Dominic Solanke, alongside centre-back trio Radu Dragusin, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero due to injury.

“It does make a massive difference,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s returning players from injury. “Getting guys like Vic and Madders contributing straight away, you can see the quality they have and the presence they have.

“As you said I can put guys on and for guys like Brennan and Wilson, Vic, Madders to a certain extent, it might take them one or two games to get up to speed, but the fact we have them available, yeah, it’s an enormous boost for us.

James Maddison celebrates for Tottenham

“It was an important game for us and an important week. We needed to put in a performance today to get us the result and I think we did that. That coupled with the fact that we’ve got some significant players back, and they got through the game.

“They got through unscathed and really contributed, it was important for us. It signals a little bit of an opportunity for us to push on from here.”

In the background, Levy, Lange and the Lilywhites recruitment team will be mindful of making sure they’re less likely to be plunged into a player-selection crisis next season.

Tottenham make offer to Lille midfielder Angel Gomes

According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Lille midfielder Angel Gomes is a summer target for the club.

The England international is out of contract at the end of 2024/2025 and available as a free agent, piquing interest from north London. It is believed that Tottenham have already made a transfer offer to Gomes after holding talks, following failed negotiations with his teammate at Lille, Jonathan David.

Spurs are seriously pushing for the midfield technician, with a return to the Premier League described as possible, while David appears most likely to head to Barcelona despite some discussions with Postecoglou’s side.

However, that being said, Man United are still in the picture, and Gomes’ former club could well tempt him with a return to Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old has impressed over the last two seasons for Lille, earning a call-up to the Three Lions squad in that time, with former interim boss Lee Carsley describing Gomes as a “very skilful” player.

Sidra Ameen breaks Pakistan batting records to sink Ireland in first ODI

Pakistan continued their dominating show at home in the ICC Women’s Championship by notching up their third win in four games of the latest cycle. Centuries from Sidra Ameen and Muneeba Ali and a record opening stand from them saw Pakistan beat Ireland in the first women’s ODI in Lahore. The win follows their 2-1 win over Sri Lanka in June earlier this year.Ameen hit an unbeaten 176 – the highest individual score by a Pakistan batter in ODIs – after Muneeba was dismissed on 107 and the pair added 221 for the opening wicket, the highest for Pakistan. On a day records tumbled, Pakistan also notched up their first total in excess of 300 in a women’s ODI by finishing on 335 for 3. In reply, only captain Laura Delany managed a half-century for Ireland as the tourists fell short by 128 in what is their first-ever match in Pakistan.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Opting to bat in sunny conditions at the Gaddafi Stadium, where the pitch was flat, Ameen and Muneeba got off to a breezy start with the latter hogging more of the strike. Seamer Arlene Kelly’s third over, where she hit a couple of fours, got Ameen truly going. She then hit three fours in legspinner Cara Murray’s second over – beating mid-off on either side off successive deliveries before using the sweep to exploit the vacant deep backward square leg region.A 15-run over by offspinner Rachel Delaney saw both openers cross the half-century mark. Soon, left-arm spinner Leah Paul couldn’t find her footing and was carted for 33 off her two overs, with Muneeba hitting a couple of humongous sixes. There were no signs of slowing down and soon, Muneeba would wrist Murray to the on side to bring up her maiden ODI century off 108 balls. A couple of overs later, it was Ameen’s time to celebrate as she brought up her third ton in the format – all in this calendar year. But in the interim, Muneeba had mistimed her heave to mid-on to end what was only Pakistan’s second hundred-plus opening stand – following the 158 the pair had made against Sri Lanka.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Aliya Riaz, promoted to No. 3, could not have the desired result as she crawled to a 27-ball 29, not getting the measure of the surface. But Ameen made up for it and carried her bat through to what is the highest individual score by a Pakistan batter in the format.Returning from an ankle injury that saw her miss out of the Women’s Asia Cup, fast bowler Fatima Sana then kept Ireland in a leash and had wickets of Paul and Eimear Richardson to show. Left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu and offspinner Nida Dar then continued to apply the squeeze. The 69-run fourth-wicket partnership between Delany and Orla Prendergast was the only resistance Ireland could put up. Delany played some crisp strokes and also used the delicate dabs during her stay in the middle. However, the 336-run target was always a mountain too far.

Jaskaran Malhotra has scored just one half-century in 11 ODIs•Peter Della Penna

Just over a year after creating history as the fourth man to hit six sixes in an over in international cricket, batter Jaskaran Malhotra has been dropped from USA’s 14-member ODI squad for the four-match tour of Namibia later this month.Malhotra set numerous records with his 173 not out against Papua New Guinea in Oman in September 2021. But he has struggled to replicate those exploits since then, scoring just one half-century in 11 ODIs. That came in September against PNG when he made 53 off 44 balls as the match ended in a tie. His last significant contribution came against Scotland at Aberdeen in August when he made 36 not out off 25 balls, including 15 runs off the final over bowled by Safyaan Sharif, to help USA chase down a target of 250 in a dramatic two-wicket win.Called up in his place as one of five changes in the squad is former Pakistan U-19 batter Shayan Jahangir, who played as part of a representative side captained by Sami Aslam on a tour of England in 2013. Jahangir migrated to Texas in 2017 and was spotted in the club cricket scene by the then-owner of the Barbados Tridents (now Royals) franchise, leading to him being drafted in the CPL. He appeared in one match in 2020. He has since been playing for the Lone Star Athletics in the Minor League Cricket T20 competition. Jahangir finished 10th overall – but first among USA-eligible players – in 2022 with 507 runs at an average of 42.25 and a strike rate of 134.48 with four half-centuries.Among the other changes, the teenage batting duo of Rahul Jariwala and Saiteja Mukkamalla have been dropped along with fast bowler Kyle Philip and legspinner Yasir Mohammad. Sushant Modani, who missed the September tour to PNG due to visa issues, has been recalled along with Ian Holland who was unavailable in September due to his county commitments at Hampshire.Along with Jahangir, the other player who could possibly debut for USA is batter Saideep Ganesh. The 21-year-old had represented the Karnataka U-16 side in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in December 2016. Ganesh scored 402 runs at an average of 30.92 and a strike rate of 136.27 with three half-centuries and a best of 56 for the East Bay Blazers in the 2022 MiLC.Offspinner Usman Rafiq, who last represented USA in February 2018, has also been recalled. Rafiq finished sixth overall with 23 wickets as captain of Houston Hurricanes in the 2022 MiLC.USA’s first ODI on the tour is on November 20 against the hosts. They play two games against PNG before finishing the last ODI against Namibia on November 26. The tour completes USA’s full 36-match slate as part of Cricket World Cup League Two, the Associate qualifying competition on the pathway to the 2023 ODI World Cup.USA is currently third on the seven-team table with 29 points from 32 matches. The top three teams automatically advance to the 10-team World Cup Qualifier.USA squad: Monank Patel (capt & wk), Ian Holland, Saideep Ganesh, Shayan Jahangir, Aaron Jones, Nosthush Kenjige, Sushant Modani, Saurabh Netravalkar, Nisarg Patel, Usman Rafiq, Gajanand Singh, Jessy Singh, Cameron Stevenson, Steven Taylor.

Wolves eyeing another "creative" Besiktas ace alongside Oxlade-Chamberlain

As they look to end the January transfer window with a flourish, Wolverhampton Wanderers have now reportedly set their sights on signing another Besiktas star following recent links to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Wolves transfer news

Those in the Midlands are still seeking further reinforcements before Monday’s deadline with Kevin Danso the main name threatening to steal the headlines. Having already reportedly agreed personal terms with the central defender, Wolves are still thrashing out a suitable deal with RC Lens as they look to boost their backline once again this month.

Danso’s not the only one on their radar, however. Recent reports have indicated that those at Molineux have joined the race to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain from Besiktas in a late January swoop. Racing alongside a number of Premier League sides to sign the midfielder who is keen on a return to English football, Wolves could secure an excellent coup.

Sat inside the relegation zone by a point, Vitor Pereira’s side could certainly do with the added experience that Oxlade-Chamberlain would provide, but he may not be the only Besiktas ace to arrive before the end of the window.

According to journalist Luis Pinto Coelho as relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves are now eyeing a move to sign Rafa Silva from Besiktas alongside Oxlade-Chamberlain this month.

The 31-year-old forward, who can also play on both wings, would certainly suit the Portuguese theme which often takes place at Molineux and would instantly provide cover for the injured Jorgen Strand-Larsen, who was forced off with a hamstring knock against Arsenal last time out.

With just four days remaining until the transfer window slams shut, however, Wolves will have to move fast if they want to secure their target. Given recent links to Danso, Oxlade-Chamberlain and now Silva, it may well be a hectic few days for those in the Midlands.

"Creative" Silva could replace Cunha

In the short-term, signing Silva could drag Wolves to Premier League safety such is his experience on the biggest stages around European football. By the time next season arrives, meanwhile, even at 31 years old he could become the natural replacement for Matheus Cunha should the Brazilian decide to depart amid growing interest.

Described as “creative” by journalist Zach Lowy during his Benfica days, Silva is almost as experienced as it gets and could yet follow in the footsteps of several compatriots by starring at Wolves in the near future.

Having missed out on Manu Silva earlier in the window too, Wolves would certainly be making up for their failure by turning towards the Besiktas star in the coming days.

Of course, there is also a reality in which the Midlands club manage to keep hold of Cunha and potentially form quite the partnership between their star man and Silva, which could fire them to Premier League safety.

Wolves are certainly a side to watch in the coming days, as they attempt to close their deal to sign Danso and chase further reinforcements for Pereira.
