  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , tensions are reportedly rising behind the scenes at Dortmund after Campbell’s transfer request was denied by the club. Head coach Kovac had advised the 19-year-old winger to seek a move due to limited playing time, especially with Dortmund’s reserve team now relegated to the fourth-tier Regionalliga. Campbell, who reportedly agreed to a five-year contract with Stuttgart, was seen as too good to play in the fourth division. Kovac didn’t view him as a key part of the senior squad either, making a transfer seem like the logical step, particularly with the 2026 World Cup in sight.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite Kovac’s backing, Dortmund’s board has blocked the move. The club reportedly demanded €8 million for Campbell, while Stuttgart only offered €4m. The Bundesliga club is facing injuries and a lack of depth on the flanks following Jamie Gittens' exit and Julien Duranville’s shoulder surgery, which led Dortmund to reconsider letting him go.

Internally, Dortmund did not plan on a permanent sale of the U.S. youth international, who is under contract until 2028. If a transfer were to happen, it would most likely include a buy-back clause.

  • DID YOU KNOW

Campbell played 75 minutes last season across all competitions. The 19-year-old made four Bundesliga appearances, one short cameo in the Champions League, and played one match in the DFB-Pokal. He also travelled with them for the Club World Cup but didn't get a minute on the pitch.

Unless Stuttgart meet Dortmund’s asking price or Campbell puts his foot down, the teenager is set to stay. If the young winger does manage to force a move, the Bundesliga club is expected to include a buy-back clause in the deal.

Issy Wong, the England fast bowler, has joined Western Storm on loan for the Charlotte Edwards Cup after she was left out of the Central Sparks team for their first two matches of their T20 campaign.Wong, who turned 22 last week, played for England as recently as September and featured for Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League in March. But after a quiet start to the season in the 50-over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, she was not selected by the Sparks for their opening T20 fixtures and has pursued a move away. The ECB – who are Wong’s primary employer, as a centrally-contracted player – have approved her loan move to ensure she will be playing competitive cricket. Storm said in a statement: “The ECB have sanctioned the move to ensure fast bowler Wong is able to maximise her playing time over the coming weeks.”Wong played all three formats for England in the 2022 summer at the age of 20 and was one of the stars of the inaugural season of the WPL, taking 15 wickets to help Mumbai Indians to the title – including a hat-trick in the eliminator. But she has struggled for consistency since and has lost her place in England’s squads. This season, she has taken three wickets at 56.33 in five Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy fixtures and has also featured for an ECB Development XI against the touring Pakistan squad. She was a surprise omission from the Sparks’ T20 side, though they have won their opening two fixtures.Wong is likely to play a more prominent role for a Storm side who have lost their opening two matches and are currently without Lauren Filer, who is on England duty. She will also target more opportunities with the bat, having spent most of this season batting at No. 8 in 50-over cricket.

Cox hundred, Critchley 99* complete Essex pursuit of victory

Jordan Cox led Essex to one of the more unlikely successful run-chases with a swashbuckling century as Warwickshire were beaten by four wickets at Chelmsford.Cox, who hit 112 from 192 balls, was joined in a record fifth-wicket partnership against Warwickshire of 176 in 54 overs with Matt Critchley that took EsseX within sight of their 330-run target. Critchley, however, was left stranded on 99 not out from 184 balls when Simon Harmer pulled the winning boundary off Che Simmons 15 minutes before the scheduled lunch interval on day four.Essex’s third win of the season kept them close on the heels of Surrey at the top of the Vitality County Championship. Warwickshire were left to rue what might have been. The match had swung every which way during the first three days with both sides in the ascendancy at various times. Warwickshire had recovered from 104 for 6 to gain a first-innings lead of 235, but declined to enforce the follow-on. When they were dismissed for 94 second time around, that decision came under the microscope. It left Essex needing 330 to win in more than five sessions.Critchley reached his third half-century of the season with a smart drive that eluded a diving extra cover and raced away for his sixth boundary. Cox also kept the scoreboard ticking along in the pre-new-ball overs and pulled Rob Yates for four.Che Simmons claimed five wickets on his first-class debut•Andrew Miller/ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Essex scored 21 from the six overs before the new-ball was taken, still requiring 85 runs to win. Critchley was not fazed and smote a full-toss straight back past Michael Rae for another boundary, and then hooked the same bowler to take the partnership to 150 from 50 overs.Cox reached his second century for Essex with his 14th four, clipped though midwicket, and then celebrated by lofting Yates over long-on for six. But he did not last much longer, flicking Che Simmons’s first ball off his legs to Jacob Bethell on the deep square-leg boundary to depart after 192 balls. It reignited the intensity that had been lacking in Warwickshire’s play for the first 75 minutes.Suddenly Rae was digging the ball in short and Michael Pepper was ducking under a couple of deliveries. Pepper then decided to advance down the wicket, stepped towards leg, was out-thought by the bowler and ended up playing on.Simon Harmer brought up the 300 by hooking the New Zealander for four, and Critchley top-edged Rae for six over fine leg and then drive through the covers for four to take Essex within a dozen of the target.

Babar: 'Haris Rauf is positive about his involvement in 2024 T20 World Cup'

Pakistan captain also explained that their top order being packed was a key cause of Mohammad Haris’ exclusion

Danyal Rasool06-May-2024It can feel like Pakistan captain Babar Azam always says the same things, but perhaps he always gets asked the same questions, too. Ahead of Pakistan’s departure for Ireland and the UK, Pakistan’s last preparatory pit stop before the T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean, Babar sat down for a press conference, and was fielded familiar questions on Pakistan’s chances, their squad selection, and of course, Pakistan’s top order.”What happened in the past is in the past,” Babar began, before recognising the question about his team’s trophy chances has been asked multiple times before, and returned to tread familiar ground. “Our aim was always to bring the trophy home, and we’re doubly confident and believe we can bring the trophy home. I’ll always believe in my players as captain, and we’ll give our best at the World Cup.”One of the prominent themes around the conference regarded two players named Haris at the top and tail of a Pakistan line-up: more specifically, the inclusion of one and the absence of the other. Haris Rauf has, in the last six months, been openly criticised by then-chief selector Wahab Riaz as “hurting Pakistan cricket” when he pulled out of Pakistan’s Australia tour, going on to have his central contract ripped up, before being injured during the PSL and having his central contract reinstated once more. Having nursed his way to fitness, he is back in the Pakistan side.Related

Imad Wasim: Nobody remembers semi-finalists and finalists. People remember the champions

Gillespie appointed Pakistan men's Test coach, Kirsten named white-ball coach

Hasan Ali recalled for T20Is against Ireland and England; Haris Rauf, Agha Salman also back

“Haris Rauf’s fitness is much improved; I wasn’t expecting him to recover so fast,” Babar said. “He’s positive about his involvement in the tournament and very driven to succeed. There’s pressure on him because there’s been a lot of talk about him, but I think he’ll come back strong. When you come back from a rest, mentally, physically, you can create quite an impact.”Mohammad Haris, meanwhile, continues to be frozen out. His most famous achievements in an international shirt came at the last T20 World Cup, when he invigorated a sagging Pakistan World Cup campaign, and was one of the key architects of Pakistan’s unexpected surge to the final. He has had a more difficult time since, dropped inexplicably for Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand at the start of this year. An indifferent PSL didn’t help, and as things stand, he isn’t in Pakistan’s plans.Babar, who plays alongside Haris for Peshawar Zalmi, acknowledged that Haris may not have got the opportunities following that World Cup he might have expected.”He didn’t get a full opportunity after that World Cup but he belongs in the top order. In the top order, we already have [Mohammad] Rizwan, Fakhar [Zaman], Saim [Ayub] and myself. He got an opportunity in the PSL, but the way he wanted to execute, he couldn’t. That doesn’t make him a bad player because it happens to every player at some point. We then discussed where we would play him. If we’d kept him in the side he’d have been forced to play in the lower-middle order. And then we went with the best possible collective combination.”Perhaps the most contentious pick of Pakistan’s squad was the recall of Hasan Ali, who last played a T20I in 2022, to the T20I side for Pakistan’s games in Ireland and England. That Pakistan dropped Zaman Khan from that 18-member squad equally raised eyebrows, even if Zaman hasn’t necessarily hit his best form over the last few months.Hasan Ali last played a T20I in 2022•Randy Brooks/AFP via Getty ImagesBabar implied it was possible – likely, even – that Hasan wouldn’t make the World Cup squad, as things stood, attributing his return to experience.”With Hasan, the selectors have also clarified that he’s there as backup. He’s not guaranteed to be in the 15. He’s here because he has T20 experience and experience in general. Zaman Khan is among the best bowlers but he’s a new-ball bowler. We already have 3-4 bowlers with the new ball. No one’s here on one person’s recommendation; there are seven selectors and everyone gave their opinion before a decision was made.”Some will argue the Pakistan captain’s characterisation of Zaman as slightly ahistorical. Zaman is, for Lahore Qalandars at any rate, one of the death bowlers they turn to most frequently, bowling in tandem with Haris Rauf during the final four overs of games. Despite bowling more overs in the Powerplay and middle overs, he has taken most wickets at the death in the format, and has been praised for his ability to execute yorkers and slower deliveries. It was no coincidence his captain Shaheen Afridi turned to Zaman for the final over in the 2023 PSL final, where he held his nerve to help Lahore Qalandars eke out a one-run victory. There were the usual pointed probes around Babar’s own place in the top order, and whether more dynamic players couldn’t be pushed higher up at his or Rizwan’s expense. While acknowledging Saim Ayub was “the sort of player who can score 80 runs in 5 overs”, Babar defended his own track record up top, once again repeating that Pakistan score in excess of 50 almost every time in the Powerplay.Saim Ayub and Babar Azam opened for Pakistan in their home T20I series against New Zealand•PCBWhether that is enough positivity is another matter, but Babar was clear that team goals and not individual preferences would be the deciding factor for selection, and that the newly-appointed white-ball coach Gary Kirsten, has been looped in and is working towards the same goal.”We’re not playing any personal games. We’ll do whatever’s best for the team. It’s not to do with individual players’ personal preferences. Whatever’s the best batting or bowling line-up for the team is the one we’ll go with. We’re in touch with Gary, and he has a lot of experience with coaching. From what I’ve said to him he understands what our line-up is and how we’re playing.”The time for rotation is now a bit late because the World Cup is upon us. The matches we’ve got left, we’ll try to give a run out to the players and combination we want to have for the World Cup.”Everyone should have hope. We try to stay true to that hope. Because cricket is the one thing that puts everyone on the same page. It’s always on the back of my mind that everyone in Pakistan is on the same page. Our responsibility is to give our best of course and remain positive.”And with that, Babar was back to treading familiar ground. Over the next couple of months, he will hope he can also scale unchartered territory.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Following Inter Miami’s 3-1 win over Pumas at Chase Stadium  –  a result that secured their spot in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals – head coach Javier Mascherano took a moment to highlight the leadership, commitment, and work ethic of star striker Luis Suarez. The Urugyan legend has come under criticism for his lack of scoring this season, but he continues to lead the way for Miami with MLS assists at 10. The 38-year-old ended a nine-game scoring drought across all competitions in Wednesday's win and also added two assists in a standout performance.

“He’s always thinking about the team. Even when he doesn’t have the ball, he works to reorganize. That kind of humility is rare in players who’ve been at the very top. I’m really happy for him,” said Mascherano.

Mascherano shared similar sentiments toward veterans Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Their strong performances were even more valuable given the absence of Lionel Messi, who missed the match due to injury.

“They’re always looking to help the team – and help me,” Mascherano said. “I had the chance to play alongside them, and they’re incredibly smart. They understand what we need. Today, we asked Busquets to shift into a back three, and he did it instantly. You don’t even need to look at the bench when you can make tactical adjustments with the players on the field.”

With the win over Pumas, reached eight points and currently sit atop the MLS group standings, officially securing their spot in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.

    WHAT JAVIER MASCHERANO SAID

As for Rodrigo De Paul, who netted his first goal for the club just a week after coming to South Florida, Mascherano was impressed by his quick impact and attitude.

“Rodrigo’s equalizer came at a great time – it gave us a sense of calm going into halftime," Mascherano said. "We were clearly the better team in the second half. To play three matches in seven days, coming straight from vacation, with that level of effort and energy – it says a lot. He’s already making a big difference for us.”

Toby Albert, Nick Gubbins centuries put Hampshire in complete control over Surrey

Toby Albert grabbed his chance to score a maiden Vitality County Championship century and Nick Gubbins plundered his first as a father as Hampshire took complete control over Surrey.Homegrown batter Albert took advantage of Ali Orr’s back problems to grind out a ton on his sixth first-class appearance as he and Gubbins knocked up Hampshire’s highest second-wicket stand against Surrey. After the 201-run partnership had ended, Gubbins raised his bat on his second century of the campaign in his first innings since daughter Ottilie was born two weeks ago.James Vince, Ben Brown and Liam Dawson also grabbed half-centuries as Hampshire piled on 495 for 4 to boast a huge 368-run lead over the champions.Albert had ended last season opening the batting with Fletcha Middleton, but his unsteady performances saw him lose his place when Orr was signed from Sussex in the winter.A couple of multi-day fifties had kept the pressure on Orr and Middleton, but the incumbents’ centuries meant there was no place for Albert. He had begun last week pumping the Royal Air Force for an outrageous 86 off 31 balls before taking apart Sussex’s Second XI with 51 off 33 balls, as he prepared for the Vitality Blast. But back spasms for Orr meant he was given a fresh chance in the Championship side, and gave head coach Adi Birrell a massive future selection headache.Albert, the son of two Olympic equestrians, had ground out 34 in 139 balls on the first evening to make sure Hampshire didn’t follow Surrey’s 127 collapse – during which he and Middleton scored Hampshire’s first fifty opening stand of the season. He and Gubbins trotted through into a lead within half an hour on a more proactive second morning, with their fifties coming in 173 and 109 deliveries.Albert was completely chanceless in his century, which came in 280 deliveries, despite a strong Surrey attack bowling accurately, but ineffectually. He top-edged to fine-leg on 114 to end his impressive innings and a record alliance against Surrey – beating the 180 Roy Marshall and Henry Horton put on at the Oval in 1961.Gubbins had started his season in good form, with 50, 69 not out, 119 and 45 the shining lights in his six innings. But he had missed the second innings versus Durham and the victory over Nottinghamshire when on paternity leave.Ottilie got her first taste of Utilita Bowl on the first evening, as she posed with a padded-up Gubbins at the end of the day – which was posted on his Instagram Story with the caption “introducing Ottie to the bowl.”Her late-night feeds haven’t impacted Gubbins’ batting, with the left-hander as assured as ever for his 18th first-class century.Once that milestone was hit the target for Hampshire was bonus points, which Vince’s aggressive approach was perfect for. He secured a second batting point with 40 in 37 balls, before heading to fifty in 49, as Hampshire cantered.Ben Foakes remained off the field due to back spasms throughout the day, with Jamie Smith taking the gloves. And he ended Vince’s onslaught on 52 when the home skipper was strangled down the leg side by Dan Worrall, with Gubbins previously well caught at gully off the Australian-born quick.Brown and Dawson reached their half-centuries at a gallop during an unbroken 157-run partnership – with the former unbeaten on 99 overnight.
