There has been a lot of talk about how Tottenham Hotspur supposedly messed up when they allowed Troy Parrott to leave the club after his international heroics.

The Ireland international scored five goals in two games for his country during the current international break, which included a last-gasp goal to qualify for the World Cup play-offs.

Parrott struck twice in a 2-0 win over Portugal, in a game that Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in, before netting an extraordinary hat-trick against Hungary in their second match.

Given his goal output and the importance of those goals to Ireland, the 23-year-old centre-forward has been a hot topic in football in the last week or so.

That has made some question Tottenham’s decision to sell him to AZ Alkmaar for a reported fee of £7m in the summer of 2024, after he came up through the youth ranks in North London.

Former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood recently said said: “I’ve got a big question for anyone who decided to let Troy Parrott go. I’m not sure he had a fair opportunity to prove himself, he’s had to go to AZ to do that.”

Why Spurs should not be blamed for selling Troy Parrott

Whilst Sherwood may be right that he did not get much of an opportunity at Spurs, with four first-team appearances, the Lilywhites should not be blamed for cashing in on him last year.

After a return of 31 goals in 38 games for Spurs at U18, Youth League, and U21 level, per Transfermarkt, the Irish marksman was given a chance to showcase his quality over a series of loans.

Unfortunately, Parrott largely struggled in his domestic loans in League One and the Championship before enjoying a strong spell with Excelsior in the Netherlands, which led to his £7m move to AZ Alkmaar.

As you can see in the table above, the Spurs youngster did not offer much of a regular goal threat in his two spells at Championship level with Millwall and Preston.

That is why it is hard to blame Tottenham, who aim to compete at the top end of the Premier League and in Europe, for cashing in on Parrott, as he had not shown much potential in English football at senior level.

The Irishman, as shown in the graphic above, then went on to hit a career-high 20 goals in all competitions in his first season with AZ Alkmaar, and currently has 13 goals in 14 matches, per Transfermarkt.

Whilst his form for club and country in the present day makes it look like Tottenham were wrong to cash in on him, they made a decision that did make sense on the evidence that they had available to them at the time.

Of course, you can still argue that it was a mistake, as he only played four matches for the first-team, but it is one that those in power in North London in the present day can use as a learning experience moving forward.

With this in mind, current first-team manager Thomas Frank, who was not at the club when Parrott was sold, should use the Irishman’s situation as a reference point when dealing with a star who is currently struggling out on loan.

Spurs youngster Jamie Donley is struggling to get a game on loan with Stoke City in the Championship, but he could be the next Troy Parrott in the making.

Why Spurs need to keep their faith with Jamie Donley

Donley has been earning rave reviews from many in recent years, including from reporter Charlie Eccleshare.

Speaking on a podcast for The Athletic in early 2024, he said: “He’s not a pure striker, he’s a nine and a half, some have compared him to Harry Kane, and someone I spoke to the other day compared him to Julian Alvarez.”

Since then, however, Donley has not really kicked on. In a bid to help him to do just that, the Lilywhites sent the 20-year-old talent on loan to Stoke for the 2025/26 campaign in the hope that he would improve and gain valuable experience in the second tier, as they did when they sent Parrott to Millwall and Preston.

However, the Northern Irish attacking midfielder has only played four times in the Championship, all off the bench, and has been an unused substitute on eight occasions in the league, per Transfermarkt.

The Spurs loanee, who assisted a goal on his debut against Derby, has also failed to make the matchday squad for their last three league matches, which suggests that he is not in Mark Robins’ plans.

Despite his lack of game time at club level with the Potters, Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill has kept faith in the playmaker, as he played against Slovakia and Luxembourg during the international break.

Donley scored from the penalty spot against Luxembourg on Monday night and was described as the “best player on the pitch” by the Northern Ireland manager after the game.

Along with his international performances, Spurs should also keep faith in the 20-year-old attacker because of his form on loan at Leyton Orient in the 2024/25 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Donley was an exceptional performer at League One level last season with Leyton Orient, ranking in the top percentile of his positional peers as a creative force in the number ten position.

These statistics, his form for Northern Ireland, and his return of 37 goals and 30 assists in 90 matches for Spurs at U18 and U21 level, per Transfermarkt, suggest that he has far more potential than his stint at Stoke suggests.

This is why Tottenham should not give up on Donley because of his struggles out on loan this season, as he has not been given a single start in the Championship and could still have a future in North London if given a chance at Spurs or at another club on loan.

Parrott struggled out on loan in the Championship and was sold to go on to greater things. Tottenham can learn from that by providing Donley with the chances that the Ireland hero did not get.

It has recently been revealed that Niclas Fullkrug is heading for the exit door this winter, having struggled to find the back of the net consistently since arriving from Borussia Dortmund, scoring just three goals in 28 appearances for West Ham.

Callum Wilson has been the man leading the line as of late, and the Englishman has impressed, bagging a brace in the 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth, but there are also question marks over his long-term future at the London Stadium.

Given that Wilson is set to turn 34 in February, and his contract expires at the end of the season, it would be a shrewd move to bring in a younger striker, and the Hammers are desperate to sign at least one new centre-forward in the upcoming window.

That is according to a report from Hammers News, which states West Ham have failed with an opening bid of £20m for Al-Hilal striker Marcos Leonardo, with the Saudi Pro League side adamant they won’t sanction a departure.

However, the Irons may return to the negotiating table with another offer, such is their determination to get a deal done, with Nuno personally a big fan of the Brazilian, who was linked with a move to Nottingham Forest during the manager’s time in charge there.

Nuno has made bringing in a new striker the number one priority for the January transfer window, and if the Hammers were able to get a deal for the 22-year-old done, they would be signing a player in red-hot form.

A menacing powerplay

The first over delivered by Wellington Masakadza set the tone for the innings. He conceded 19 to Gurbaz’s bat. First, Gurbaz bent low, rolled the wrists, and paddled one fine for four. The next ball, Gurbaz stepped down the track to launch it straight back over the sightscreen and into the trees. When Masakadza corrected his line, Gurbaz stayed deep and carved him past point for another boundary, before pre-empting a straighter one and paddling again past short fine leg.From there, every bowler faced the same problem. The next phase was about control without risk. Raza turned to himself and bowled with discipline (4-0-20-0). But from the other end, the runs kept coming. Burl, in particular, was taken for 30 runs in the 14th over. Gurbaz started with a paddle over fine leg, followed by a drive drilled straight back past the bowler. When Burl went wide, Gurbaz stepped out and sent it sailing over long-off; the next, he picked up and deposited over cow corner. The fifth ball was sliced through extra-cover, and the last was lifted flat over long-on.At 155 for 0 after 15 overs, Afghanistan had broken the game. Zimbabwe needed something special and it came from Raza himself – sprinting back from extra cover to grab a running, diving catch off Ngarava’s slower ball. Gurbaz, the dismissed man, made 92 off 48 and hit eight fours and five sixes. Ibrahim, whose fifty had arrived in a quieter fashion, was next to go, beaten by Evans’ slower delivery and bowled for 60. Raza, Bennett spark hope

Zimbabwe’s reply started poorly. Dion Myers’ lazy run-out and Brendan Taylor’s chip to mid-on inside the powerplay left them at 19 for 2, but then came the counterattack. Raza and Bennett turned the evening into a contest again.Raza was characteristically dismissive of length. He pulled anything short, carving Fazalhaq Farooqi over square leg and slicing Fareed Ahmad through cover point. Bennett played some audacious shots too — a ramp over fine leg off Fareed and a checked drive past mid-off. Raza’s fifty arrived in 28 balls but his innings ended in a fluke when a sweep shot off Mohammad Nabi rolled off his glove, then his pad and onto the stumps. Bennett carried on for 47 before mistiming to mid-off. At that point, Zimbabwe were 126 for 4 in 12.5 overs.

Fareed, Ahmadzai take Afghanistan home

That could have been the end, but Tashinga Musekiwa and Burl kept the chase alive. Burl’s three sixes rekindled belief, while Musekiwa’s shots through mid-off and midwicket kept Zimbabwe within touching distance. Even after Burl’s exit for 37 off 15 balls, there was hope.With three overs to go, Zimbabwe needed 39, but Fareed’s double strike in the 18th over — bowling Clive Madande and having Evans brilliantly caught by Gurbaz — broke the chase once and for all. Farooqi conceded only 10 in the 19th, leaving Abdollah Ahmadzai with 18 to defend off the final over.Ahmadzai’s first ball was a yorker, his second uprooted Maposa with an inswinger that tailed late, and off the last ball, Ngarava’s flick hung in the air at square leg. Olympiacos pushed Real Madrid to the brink in a chaotic seven-goal Champions League thriller in Piraeus, but Kylian Mbappe’s four-goal performance proved decisive. Jose Luis Mendilibar praised his team’s fight, admitting Madrid “gave us a lifeline” late on, while offering a tactical breakdown of why Mbappe and Vinicius Junior are so devastating for Los Blancos.

Their star striker Mbappe was the difference-maker, scoring all four goals as Los Blancos twice surrendered two-goal leads before hanging on in the final minutes in Piraeus.

  The hosts struck first through Chiquinho after a slick combination with Daniel Podence and Ayoub El Kaabi. Madrid initially struggled to gain control, but Mbappe flipped the game on its head with a devastating seven-minute hat-trick, scoring in the 22nd, 24th and 29th minutes. A brilliant ball over the top from Vinícius sparked the comeback, followed by a textbook header from Arda Guler’s cross, and then a composed finish from Eduardo Camavinga’s through ball.

  Olympiacos refused to fold. Mehdi Taremi and El Kaabi struck in the second half, dragging the Greek side back within touching distance and setting up a frenetic finale. But Madrid held firm for their first win in four games, with Mbappe becoming the first Real Madrid player ever to score four goals in a major European away match and extending his record for most away hat-tricks in Champions League history.

  After the final whistle, Olympiacos manager Mendilibar described the match as “crazy,” emphasising the emotional swings throughout the night.

  Speaking to after the game, Mendilibar gave an honest and detailed assessment of a match he believed could have gone either way. His first reaction summed up the unpredictability: "Crazy, it's true, so many things happened, too many. We started very well, they turned the game around in two minutes, they were close to making it 1-4 which would have killed us. They gave us a lifeline and we finished the match pinning Madrid back and creating chances to equalize."

  The Olympiacos boss insisted his players deserved credit for refusing to collapse despite being repeatedly punished by Madrid’s world-class attackers. He admitted the quality gap was visible in certain moments, saying: "Look, it seemed like we were dead and they scored goals on us very quickly with very little effort. That's when you realize you're up against the best players in the world and that there are differences with your own team."

  Even with Madrid threatening to run away with the result, Mendilibar maintained belief that his team could fight back. Asked about his satisfaction with the performance, he replied: "Anything could have happened. The result is what matters; we did what we could and we never gave up. That's the most important thing for us."

  Madrid going strong in Champions League

  The result places Real Madrid in a strong position in the Champions League, they now sit fifth in the table and three points behind leaders Arsenal. With 22 goals already this season and nine in Europe, Mbappe continues to be the defining figure of Madrid’s campaign. At 326 feet, it was the shortest home run of his career thus far, just barely sailing over the 318-foot fence in Yankee Stadium. After the game, Judge joked that he was resorting to drastic measures to try to help the ball get over the fence.

"That one I'm kind of blowing out right there," Judge said. "You're hoping it sneaks over, but just trying to put a good swing on a pitch out of the zone. Yeah, we'll take them all, they all count the same."

When told it was the shortest home run of his career, Judge smiled and feigned disappointment.

"Like I said, we'll take it," Judge continued with a laugh. "It counts the same as the longest one I've hit…"

For the record, the longest home run of Judge's career was a titanic, 496-foot shot against the Toronto Blue Jays in September of 2017. But the Yankees captain is right. Tuesday's homer counts the same as the rest of his dingers, even the one he hit last week against the Seattle Mariners, a no-doubter that even the outfielders didn't bother to pursue.
