430 Shubman Gill’s runs in the Edgbaston Test against England – the second-highest aggregate in a Test behind Graham Gooch’s 456 against India in 1990.2 Gill is the second batter to make two 150-plus scores in a Test, after Allan Border who scored 150* and 153 against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980.Gill is one of nine batters with a century and a double-century in a Test. Among Indians, only Gavaskar had done the double before Gill.2 Indian captains with hundreds in both innings of a Test before Gill. Gavaskar scored 107 and 182 not out against West Indies at Eden Gardens in 1978, and Virat Kohli scored 115 and 141 against Australia in Adelaide in 2014.Gill is also the second Indian with hundreds in both innings of a Test in England, after Rishabh Pant, who did it in the previous Test at Headingley.1014 India’s total runs at Edgbaston – their highest aggregate in a Test, beating the 916 against Australia at the SCG in 2004. It’s the fourth-highest aggregate overall and the sixth time a team has scored more than 1000 in a Test.1 Gill and Ravindra Jadeja are the first Indian pair with a hundred and double-hundred partnership in the same Test. They are also one of nine Indian pairs with two century partnerships in a men’s Test match.4 Number of century partnerships for India in the Edgbaston Test and all of them involved Gill. He is the first Indian and only the fifth batter to be part of four century stands in a Test. The others are: Hanif Mohammad (vs West Indies in 1958), Graham Gooch (vs India in 1990), Mark Taylor (vs Pakistan in 1998) and Joe Root (vs Pakistan in 2016).585 Gill’s runs in the first two Tests of the tour of England – the second-highest aggregate in the first two matches of a series, behind Graeme Smith’s 621 in England in 2003. Gill also has the highest tally in the first two Tests as captain, bettering Kohli, who scored 449 runs.24 Rishabh Pant’s sixes in Tests in England – the most by a visiting batter in a country. He went past Ben Stokes, who has hit 21 sixes in South Africa.

Kwena Maphaka is the youngest player to represent South Africa but that doesn’t mean he has the least to say. Quite the opposite, in fact, which he showed when he also became the youngest bowler from a Full Member country to take a four-wicket haul in a T20I, against Australia in Darwin.Australia were off to a flying start at 71 for 4 in the powerplay when Maphaka was brought on and the left-arm quick responded with the wicket of Mitchell Owen. The danger man, Tim David, had scored 18 off the first seven balls he had faced, including two sixes, and wanted to take Maphaka on. The first ball David faced from Maphaka was short and slow and he pulled it for one. The second was shorter, strayed down leg and was called wide. And the third was better directed, at David’s chest. He could only splice it to point and at the height it came, David thought Maphaka needed to bowl it again.”He went to the umpire and he was asking about it,” Maphaka said the day after the match, which South Africa lost. He also revealed that he was having none of David’s complaints. “I just told him to let the umpires deal with umpiring the game and he must focus on batting.”Related

David took those words to heart. He went on to score 83 runs off 52 balls, including 13 off 11 balls from Maphaka but he was the only batter to send the 19-year-old to the boundary. Maphaka’s four overs cost only 20 runs, he was the most economical bowler of the match and David was among the batters he dismissed in a career-best haul. After what he called “a few bad performances in Zimbabwe,” where Maphaka picked up three wickets for 92 runs in 10.5 overs, he showed he belongs at this level.”It feels really good, coming off a few bad performances in Zimbabwe and just building up, playing some more professional and competitive cricket in the past few months, it feels really good to put in a good performance for the team and make history while doing it,” he said.Maphaka opened the bowling in the second match South Africa played in the Zimbabwe tri-series last month and bowled two overs in the powerplay that cost 19 runs. He was used at first change in two matches after that, including the final, and both times also bowled in the powerplay. It was really just a tactical ploy in terms of getting wickets through the middle rather than protecting me as a player.”With Australia going as hard as they could upfront, South Africa needed someone to slow them down. Maphaka and left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy provided that. In the four overs after the powerplay, they gave away only 17 runs and took two wickets between them, which left Australia 88 for 6 at the halfway stage.”When a team is coming out all guns blazing, there’s a few more opportunities to take wickets so it’s about being smart and understanding what you have to do when you’re faced with those situations,” Maphaka said. “Sometimes you go to a yorker, a bumper or a slower ball. It’s all about reading the game and understanding what you need to do at that moment and keeping your plans as simple as possible, really.”

All of those variations were on display as Maphaka was also given the job of bowling the penultimate over, where he took two wickets and mixed up his lengths well. He had David caught off a full delivery and dismissed Adam Zampa with a short ball and backed his skills to limit Australia to 178 at the end.”It’s not about trying to over-complicate things or make it seem like it’s a game of 20,000 deliveries,” he said. “Just go to your best ball at a particular moment in time and back your plans. Belief is a massive part in performance, and I think I might have been a little bit short on belief in Zimbabwe, so that’s probably one of the big takeaways from that series.”Before the Zimbabwe series, Maphaka had played five T20Is, two ODIs and a Test for South Africa, all before he had turned 19. Though his returns had been relatively modest, he would have had no doubt that South Africa see him as a key player in their future. Already, he has learnt how to manage that expectation.”The most important part is just really accepting the fact that you’re going to have bad days, you’re going to have good days, and it’s just sticking to your game plan and sticking to whatever you do best. I’m not going to be the best player in the world overnight, and I understand that,” Maphaka said. “It’s all about growing as a player day by day, and just keeping focused on the grind and what I have to do to make myself better on a daily basis.”He has also learnt not to shy away from speaking about his aims to fulfil every ounce of his potential. “I’ve always been pretty confident and a real competitor,” he said. “I never like losing. “We had done a lot of work before the auction about how we would go about in the field of play, which players we have to target, what style of play we should target with RCB,” Rangarajan told ESPNcricinfo.”We took so much time in prepping for the auction; which are the players we like, what is our style. More or less what we wanted and, if I am being very honest, the one or two players who we thought we might not get, we got them as well.”RCB, the 2024 WPL champions, had one of the best auctions among the five teams, assembling a squad with several multi-skilled players. Of the players they picked, Nadine de Klerk, Pooja Vastrakar and Arundhati Reddy are three solid pace-bowling allrounders, whike in Radha Yadav, Grace Harris and Prema Rawat, they have decent spin-bowling allrounders.”We had already picked our XI maybe by the second accelerated [round],” Rangarajan said. “And we had even gone to playing XII. After a point, we had so much money that it gave us an opportunity to pick a team where we could change our bowling combination to play a few other overseas [players].”You know, that’s what all-rounders do. So, that was a very clear plan for us: to pick the best bowling unit available.”2:06

Price: I am a little nervous about RCB middle order

An interesting selection from RCB was in the form of Vastrakar, who went for INR 85 lakh. The 26-year-old hasn’t played any competitive cricket since October 2024 due to injury, and is currently rehabbing at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. While there have been conflicting reports about her availability, Rangarajan said that she should be ready next month.”Look, if Pooja is fit, what she does on the field, we shouldn’t even waste time talking about that. She’s a three-skill player,” Rangarajan said. “The BCCI has communicated to us that Pooja will be ready next month. That’s the first thing. The second thing is, if we are buying her, we must have done some work behind the scenes. Like, what is she bowling? How fit will she be? When will she be fit?”She is in the very good hands of the CoE. She is already going through her rehab process and is very close to bowling at 100%. As soon as she comes out of the CoE, she will be handed over to RCB and we will get her ready for the WPL. A fit Pooja Vastrakar changes a lot of things for RCB as far as combinations are concerned.”While RCB have plenty of all-round options, there is a concern about a reliable frontline Indian batter missing in the squad apart from Mandhana. There is Gautami Naik, but she hasn’t played in the WPL before, while Dayalan Hemalatha has had mixed results in the tournament. Rangarajan, however, isn’t concerned.”It’s all a matter of perception,” he said. “I don’t necessarily think that it’s a weakness for us. If we had a frontline batter, then we’re going to be sitting here and saying, ‘are we concerned that we don’t have a couple of all-rounders?’ So, you could see it both ways. We may not have enough front-line Indian batting options. But I think we have good enough all-rounders to fill in those spots.”Malolan Rangarajan earmarked Prema Rawat as one to watch out for•BCCIAmong the Indian batting options, Naik had a terrific Maharashtra Premier League, where she finished with 173 runs in six innings, while opening the batting with Mandhana for Ratnagiri Jets. She is also a handy offspinner and, according to Rangarajan, a gun fielder.”Gautami, I think she was called for trials only by us,” he said. “As far as her skill is concerned, she’s a tall, lanky individual with long levers. She’s come for a couple of our trials and we’ve seen her ability to hit the ball cleanly, has power. And again, importantly, one of the key things we were looking for in the auction was trying to recruit good fielders. So, she was one of the players who ticked that box and also can bowl an over or two.”I think she’s a very exciting talent. She can open the innings or bat in the middle order.”Another player that has impressed Rangarajan is legspinner Rawat, for whom RCB exercised the RTM and picked up for INR 20 lakh. Rawat had fetched INR 1.20 crore in the 2025 auction, and while she did not have the best of seasons, managing just one wicket in three outings, she has since played for India A with decent returns.”Prema is someone we identified last year and we were very, very sure of the talent,” Rangarajan said. “She is trending in the right direction. A lot of talent there but more importantly, for someone like Prema, who had come for trials prior to us picking her last year, one thing was very evident was her character.”She is a character who isn’t too flustered or phased by the situation or the gravitas of the WPL or the RCB dressing room. We really like that. She is supremely talented, can bowl legspin with good revs at a very good speed. I’d say that along with Arundhati Reddy and Radha, she is among the best fielders in the country.”I think it is a matter of time before she becomes a capped cricketer. If I had to take a punt, I would say that she could well play this Sri Lanka series [next month] as well. I won’t be surprised.”

“We are playing WPL in January ’26 and the next WPL in January ’27. So, in a way, we have two WPLs in one year. We are going to play in D.Y. [Patil] and Vadodara, but we can’t just think about that and take a team. Who knows, next year, we play in three to four grounds. So, for all the conditions, we had to build a team.”

WPL 2026 will be played in two venues – DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai and Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. While Rangarajan said that the current RCB squad has been picked keeping in mind the conditions in these two venues, they have also looked at building a squad for the future.”We are playing at the DY Patil Stadium, where there is some help for the pacers, so we need a pace bowler. If the wicket starts to turn, then we need spinners for that,” he said. “Plus, you also have to keep an eye out on what’s coming post-season also. You just can’t pick a team for one season alone.”We are playing WPL in January ’26 and the next WPL in January ’27. So, in a way, we have two WPLs in one year. We are going to play in D.Y. [Patil] and Vadodara, but we can’t just think about that and take a team. Who knows, next year, we play in three to four grounds. So, for all the conditions, we had to build a team.”And whatever our picks are, it’s not like they are very old. They are all young and very exciting players. And also, experienced. One manager who has previously hailed Swansea City supporters is open to the idea of replacing Alan Sheehan in south Wales.

Swansea City managerial latest

The search for a new permanent Swans manager is underway after parting ways with Sheehan on Tuesday following a poor start to the Championship campaign.

A club statement on Tuesday read: “In the wake of a disappointing run, it is felt results and performances do not meet the standards expected at this stage of the season, and we have had to take this difficult decision.

“The process to appoint a new head coach is already under way. We will update supporters on this process once it has been concluded.”

CEO Tom Gorringe and head of recruitment Adam Worth are leading the search for Sheehan’s successor, with Hammarby manager Kim Hellberg the favourite to come in during the international break.

Talks have been held with the 37-year-old who at this stage appears to be one of the frontrunners after initial discussions.

Swedish coach Hellberg isn’t the only name, though, with former managers Russell Martin and Brendan Rodgers out of work at this moment in time, as well as former Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick.

Russell Martin open to Swansea City return

According to the BBC, Martin is open to the idea of returning to Swansea, more than two years on after leaving for Southampton.

The outlet states that Martin ‘remains a popular figure among players and staff at Swansea’, however, a move back to south Wales for the available manager ‘is unlikely’ despite still having ‘many admirers within the club’.

The Swansea owners are the ones who are seemingly against a return for Martin, who was sacked from Rangers earlier this season following a disastrous short tenure at Ibrox.

The 39-year-old did take Southampton to the Premier League in his first season in charge before being sacked in the top flight by the Saints. Martin has actually taken charge of more games for Swansea than any other club in his managerial career and clearly has a soft spot for Jacks supporters.

Following a draw at Huddersfield during his time in charge, Martin was full of praise for the Swansea supporters.

A well-known figure within English cricket is being investigated by police over allegations of spiking the drinks of two women and sexually assaulting one of them.The reported on Friday that the man, in his 40s, was questioned under caution by Scotland Yard in June after a complaint at a pub in south-west London, in the SW6 area which covers Fulham and Parsons Green. The ECB declined to comment on the allegations.”We are currently investigating allegations of spiking and sexual assault against two women that took place on Thursday, 22 May at a pub in the SW6 area,” the Metropolitan Police told ESPNcricinfo in a statement.”Two women are believed to have been spiked with one also allegedly sexually assaulted. A man in his 40s was interviewed under caution on Thursday, 5 June. Enquiries remain ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage.”Chris Haward, the managing director of the Cricket Regulator – the independent body responsible for handling disciplinary cases within English cricket – said last month: “Removing sexual misconduct from the game is a priority.”The Regulator has twice charged individuals following instances of sexual misconduct in the last year.A coach was suspended for up to nine months in August after being dismissed by his county for “sexualised and inappropriate” pictures to junior female members of staff. Last November, another coach was suspended for up to six months for “inappropriate sexual behaviour” on a county pre-season tour.

Leeds United are now racing to sign FC Midtjylland striker Franculino Dju, but it could take a huge offer to get a deal over the line.

Leeds strengthened their forward line considerably during the summer transfer window, but Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have so far flattered to deceive, having scored just three Premier League goals between them after 11 matches.

Some of Calvert-Lewin’s performances have been particularly concerning, with the former Everton man now on a six-game goal drought, losing his place in the starting line-up after registering an xG of just 0.03 in the 3-0 drubbing at Brighton & Hove Albion.

There is a case to be made that Daniel Farke’s side are not playing to the Englishman’s strengths, with Ross McCormack saying:

“The team has got to be built around him. Your full-backs and your wingers have got to put crosses into the box, and I don’t feel Leeds United do that enough.”

However, a return of just one goal in ten matches across all competitions is still way below par, and the Whites have now set their sights on a new striker ahead of the January transfer window.

Leeds join race to sign Franculino Dju

According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, in a report for Leeds United News, Leeds have now joined the race for Midtjylland striker Franculino, but they will have to pay a club-record fee to get a deal over the line.

Bailey said: “He’s got a lot of teams looking at him. West Ham like him a lot, they looked at him in the summer. Midtjylland have put a £40m price tag on him.

“Teams will possibly try to soften that by putting in lesser offers. He’s got an awful lot of interest; I’m told over 20 clubs across Europe like him. Leeds have looked at him, he’s on their radar, they’ve watched him.”

With Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin underperforming, it is no surprise the Whites want to bring in some additional attacking firepower, and the 21-year-old is off to a flying start to the campaign, amassing 19 goals in 26 matches in all competitions.

The Guinea-Bissau international has now earned the chance to prove himself at a higher level, having been a consistent goalscorer for the Danish side for quite some time, picking up a total of 52 goals and 13 assists in 99 outings.

Having been prolific in front of goal, the centre-forward was also lauded as “unstoppable” by scout Jacek Kulig earlier this season.

With some tricky fixtures on the horizon, Leeds may need someone to come in and save their season in January, and it would certainly be worth taking a gamble on Franculino, although the huge asking price could be a stumbling block.

But he fell to a ball in Harmer’s first over of the day that spun past his outstretched leg and bowled him between bat and pad after a partnership with Goldsworthy worth 98 in 20 overs.Another bowling change prefaced another wicket when Leach nibbled at one from Bennett to provide substitute wicketkeeper Simon Fernandes with a fourth catch. Gregory swept Harmer for six during a brief appearance but attempted a repeat next ball and top-edged to short fine leg.Goldsworthy made it to three-figures just in time, pushing a quick single off Harmer, but departed two balls later when he swung Bennett to deep square leg.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has got much to sit on over the November international break, having been thrashed 3-0 at Manchester City last weekend.

That one stung. It condemned Liverpool to their fifth defeat in six Premier League matches, and it undid the positivity built across two recent wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid, clean sheets kept on both evenings.

It was not just the scoreline but the manner of the loss that is so concerning for the Reds, whose title defence is as flaky as could be possible.

In a similar way, it is not Arsenal’s eight-point advantage at the top of the table that is so worrying, but the fact that Slot’s side are so shorn of tactical understanding and confidence within the system.

Changes are needed, even after a summer of record-breaking change in the transfer market.

The changes Slot needs to make at Liverpool

It’s telling that after significant summer spending, Liverpool are still alarmingly thin at the back. Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending injury after joining from Parma for £27m in August has hardly helped, but the failure to land Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has been underlined in its bungled nature.

Even if Leoni had avoided such a setback, it likely wouldn’t have been enough to make up for the dismal form of Ibrahima Konate, who is out of contract next summer and playing so erratically that many fans have lost the desire to fight online for the defender as Real Madrid continue to circle.

While it’s true that those in central midfield have failed to produce levels of physicality and verve that are needed to balance and combine with a central defence, Konate has done anything but help himself with such shoddy displays, with Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley labelling the Frenchman “a serious, serious problem”.

Liverpool’s issues run deeper, though. There’s a case to be made that Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak are all ‘better’ players than Luis Diaz, who was sold to Bayern Munich for about £66m in the summer.

However, Lucho has been a cut above all three, and Slot needs to recraft his team and establish a new offensive sharpness and get the best from these big-money recruits who all arrived with such a weight of expectation.

It will come as no surprise that Liverpool are believed to be gearing up for a winter of bustle in the January transfer market, and Spanish sources even claim the Anfield side could part with upward of £200m to fix the faults in the Slot machine.

The dream XI Slot could build at Liverpool

Sporting director Richard Hughes was heralded after the summer transfer window, having overseen a spending spree that journalist Henry Winter described as “probably be the greatest transfer window by a club ever”, albeit a point made before the market’s closure and with the assumption that Guehi would sign too.

However, if Liverpool mean to sign the Three Lions star, they will do so on a free contract next summer, perhaps in a one-in, one-out situation that will see Konate leave.

With that in mind, FSG may look to complete a marquee move for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni. Earlier this month, reports from Spain suggest the Reds are looking to complete a deal for the Italian, who is valued at €100m (£87m).

Regarded for his “world-class” technical ability by commentator Matteo Bonetti, Bastoni’s ball-playing tendencies would ostensibly pave over the error-strewn struggles of Konate.

But Liverpool’s problems are wider, and there’s a sense that the midfield needs an addition, especially with Alexis Mac Allister so badly out of sorts.

Though this latest rumour might be viewed as something of a pipe dream, there have been murmurs nonetheless of Merseyside interest in Paris Saint-Germain superstar Vitinha, who pipped Mohamed Salah to third place in the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Vitinha, 25, would certainly not come cheap after orchestrating PSG’s glittering 2024/25 campaign, and it’s reported that a £114m offer might be needed to bring him over to the Premier League.

We cannot deny the Argentina star has been well below his best this season, and Liverpool could do with more press resistance and control in the middle of the park.

Vitinha would solve these issues, hailed by Portugal manager Roberto Martinez as “the best midfielder in the world” for his performances in Paris.

The vast difference in form between the respective midfielders is staggering, and while Vitinha isn’t a midfielder who gets all that stuck in defensively, his accuracy in the duel and energy in closing down and recovering balls emphasise the quality he would add to Liverpool’s engine room.

Perhaps such an acquisition would rekindle Liverpool’s attacking fire. After all, with the likes of Isak and Ekitike competing for a berth at number nine, Wirtz and Salah and the rest surrounding them, there is every reason for Slot to find a solution and bring this club back to the fore.

Whether Liverpool would actually succeed in pulling off two audacious winter deals is another question, but there’s no question that Hughes is prowling across the market and looking to find ways to revive this struggling side.

With Vitinha and Bastoni restoring balance to the defence and midfield, we might still see another spectacular season.
